Search Through James City County Grants for Nonprofits in Virginia

The Community Foundation of the Rappahannock River Region

The Community Foundation is a devoted advocate for the vitality and well-being of the Rappahannock River Region. We are a 501(c)(3) nonprofit that manages and distributes charitable giving in the counties of Stafford, Spotsylvania, King George, and Caroline, and the City of Fredericksburg.

Scholarships

One of The Community Foundation’s strategies for preserving and growing the quality of life in our region is supporting higher education for area students. Generous individuals and families, companies and organizations establish endowed scholarship funds and the proceeds from these funds benefit deserving students. Donors work with foundation staff to determine appropriate criteria for each fund. The Community Foundation currently administers more than fifty scholarship funds.

The Randy and Tina Harris Family Scholarship Fund

The Randy and Tina Harris Family Scholarship Fund is responsive to workforce readiness needs. This scholarship will be available on a rolling basis, students may apply at any time. Randy, a member of the Board of Governors at The Community Foundation starting in June 2022, owned two businesses in the area until 2021, Ultimate Subaru and Ultimate Buick GMC. As an active businessperson, philanthropist and retiree, he seeks to give back to the community he calls home. Tina and Randy have been friends to the foundation through leadership and participation, also contributing to the Virginia Education Improvement Scholarships Tax Credits and through the Randy and Tina Harris Family Charitable Fund.

While it is common for students to go to college after high school, earning a college degree isn’t the only option after high school, nor is it the right option for everyone.

The trades are vital, though often underappreciated, career fields that are essential for the functioning of society. Skilled trades are the backbone of our society and can be lucrative, stable career opportunities. In areas like construction, manufacturing, technology and medicine there are trades where people are able to make significant contributions to our world.

African Americans are very underrepresented in these fields. To ensure the brightest future possible, it’s crucial for African Americans interested in the trades to have the financial resources necessary to further their education.

Randy’s father, James Harris, had a successful career as a machinist and welder. He demonstrated that a college degree was not a necessity for a successful career. This scholarship was created for those African American students like James Harris, who are inspired to develop their talents in trades or taking non-traditional paths to further their education.

About the Williamsburg Health Foundation 

The Williamsburg Health Foundation (WHF) is an independent private foundation dedicated to improving the health and well-being of those who live in Greater Williamsburg.

The Foundation is focused on strengthening the healthcare safety-net for uninsured and underinsured individuals and supports programs and activities that target behavioral and social risk factors that influence health throughout the life span.

WHF awards grants to nonprofit organizations as well as local and state government agencies that serve residents in our service area of the City of Williamsburg, James City County, and York County.

Grantmaking

With the goal of enhancing health in Greater Williamsburg, WHF is interested in evidence-based, promising, or previously successful approaches, and new ideas. WHF welcomes proposals from eligible entities that prioritize positive outcomes for populations with low incomes and target one or more of these underlying factors affecting lifelong health and well-being:

• Access to care: Availability, affordability, and quality of health-related services.
• Economic Advancement: Financial literacy and capability to access essential resources.
• Healthy Living: A way of living that lowers the risk of being seriously ill. 

Grant Priorities

As the Foundation’s funds are finite and the good work of nonprofit organizations and others is limitless, we have established the funding priorities outlined in the grantmaking guidelines. Priority consideration is given to proposals which:

• Align with the Foundation’s vision, mission, overarching goal, and strategies.
• Impact the health of economically disadvantaged individuals, including those who are uninsured and underinsured.
• Demonstrate collaboration, defined as aligning work among partners.

Unsolicited Grants/Proposals

The Foundation accepts unsolicited proposals through three grant cycles annually. 

Applying for an Unsolicited Grant requires the submission of WHF’s online grant application. WHF has two separate Unsolicited Grant applications: 1) project/program proposals and 2) capital project proposals.

Both applications require organizations to identify the need, target population, strategy for addressing the need, and alignment of the proposed request with WHF’s strategic plan and funding strategies.

Capital Project Proposals

Support of projects related to the construction, expansion, renovation of buildings and the acquisition of land. (Please note, capital grants are considered during the third grant cycle of the year, and the ability to support such projects varies by year. Even when capital project requests are strategically aligned, the ability to fund capital requests of this type may be limited by the grants budget and programmatic requests that year.) 

While the capital project application does not require submission of the WHF Program Budget Packet, the application itself requires budgetary information specific to the capital project.

The Hall Family Scholarship Fund

The Hall Family Scholarship was established by Barry and Jeannette Hall to assist high school students at Falls Church High School and James Monroe High School with their college education.

Barry was born in Washington, D.C. and grew up in Falls Church and Jeannette was born in Fredericksburg and has always lived in the area. Barry taught Physical Education and coached at Quantico High School and Stonewall Jackson in Manassas for thirty-seven years. Jeannette taught Physical Education in public schools for two years and then forty-one at Quantico High/Middle School. Jeannette’s Mother, Elsie Marie Allison, was an English and Latin Teacher and Guidance Counselor at James Monroe High School. Barry graduated from Shepherd University where he was inducted into the Athletic Hall of Fame in 2007 and Jeannette graduated from Mary Washington. Both have a master’s degree in education from the University of Virginia.

The Lee Wingate Pappandreou Drama Award

The Lee Wingate Pappandreou Award was established in honor of Mrs. Lee Wingate Pappandreou, an outstanding and dedicated drama teacher at James Monroe High School. This award, established by her husband, is given to the single drama student who best exemplifies the dedication to, professionalism towards, and talent in theater arts that Mrs. Pappandreou dedicated herself to instilling in her students.

The award is available on a one-time basis to local graduating high school seniors only.

The Martha S. Daltan Scholarship Fund

The Martha S. Daltan Scholarship Fund was established by Martha’s husband, Gerry, and children, Ashley and Michael.
