Search Through Sustainability Grants in Delaware

About the Fund

The Fund for Delaware Collaboration (the “Collaboration Fund”) supports formal sustained collaborations between and among nonprofit organizations in the state of Delaware. These collaborations can range from voluntary back-office consolidations to programmatic joint ventures, to mergers and acquisitions. The Fund seeks to have a catalytic impact on the capacity, effectiveness, and financial health of the Delaware nonprofit sector.

Three Types of Grant Awards

The Collaboration Fund makes grants to nonprofits to identify and engage experienced technical assistance providers who can support the exploration or implementation of a sustained collaboration.

The Fund will support collaboration projects involving nonprofits serving Delaware and Delawareans, regardless of whether they have headquarters in the state.

Up to $5,000

To assess readiness or begin the process of alignment

The Hearst Foundation: Culture Grant aims to support outstanding nonprofits that enhance cultural engagement and artistic talent in the U.S. With a focus on programs that reach young people, the grant prioritizes organizations that create lasting impacts in the arts and sciences. The Foundation allocates 25% of its funding to cultural initiatives, favoring established organizations with a history of significant results. Eligible nonprofits must encourage inclusivity and sustainability in their programs.

The Kenny Family Foundation Grant offers micro-grants to local 501(c)(3) non-profit organizations in New Castle County, Delaware. The foundation supports a variety of community initiatives, providing assistance through ShopRite gift cards, typically averaging $100. Organizations must submit a formal request along with IRS documentation to be considered. Since its inception in 2008, the foundation has been dedicated to improving the quality of life and promoting social welfare in the region.

The Michael & Susan Dell Foundation provides grants to organizations focused on improving the lives of children in urban poverty in the U.S., India, and South Africa. They prioritize projects in education, health, and family economic stability. Grants typically do not exceed 25% of a project's budget or 10% of an organization's annual expenses. The foundation seeks to partner with organizations already making an impact, ensuring funding supports impactful social enterprises.

The Sidney Stern Memorial Trust Grant supports charitable, scientific, medical, and educational organizations that are 501(c)(3) certified. This private funder emphasizes impactful service to diverse populations without discrimination. Grants must be utilized within the United States and cannot be awarded to individuals, political candidates, or lobbying efforts. The Trust is dedicated to enhancing the general welfare through soundly-managed initiatives that contribute significantly to community needs.

The Chichester DuPont Foundation provides grants focused on environmental, educational, healthcare, and social service initiatives, emphasizing support for underprivileged children in Delaware. Organizations are encouraged to develop relationships with trustees to enhance funding success. Grants typically cover one year, with potential for multi-year funding in special interest areas. Nonprofit organizations exempt under Section 501(c)(3) are eligible, while individuals and for-profit entities are not. The foundation seeks innovative proposals and capital improvements to drive positive change.

The Henry A. Jordan, M.D., Preservation Excellence Fund supports innovative projects in the Mid-Atlantic region, offering up to $5,000 to organizations committed to protecting cultural and natural resources. Established in 1996, this fund promotes collaboration among various stakeholders, facilitates policy development, and enhances public engagement in preservation issues. Eligible activities include planning and education efforts, requiring applicants to match grant funds and adhere to specific conditions to ensure effective use of resources for community sustainability.

The Dairy Processor Innovation Grant, offered by the Northeast Dairy Business Innovation Center, is designed to support dairy processors in enhancing their long-term business viability. With grants ranging from $75,000 to $250,000, this program encourages investments in sourcing, product development, and sustainable practices. Available to applicants across Northeast states, it aims to help processors appeal to consumers who prioritize local, environmentally friendly products. The total funding available is $1,000,000, with a two-step application process.

The Delaware Division of Small Business offers the EDGE Grant to support small businesses in Delaware, providing a competitive funding opportunity with a $3 to $1 match. The Foundation prioritizes innovative proposals focused on prevention and sustainable health improvements, particularly for children and adults. Grants typically do not exceed $50,000 and cover direct program expenses. Eligible applicants include public entities and 501(c)(3) organizations.

The Gender Justice Organizing Fund Grant supports initiatives led by women, girls, trans, gender nonconforming, and LGBTQI+ individuals to achieve gender justice. Organizations must prioritize community organizing and demonstrate an understanding of systemic oppression. Grants from the Bread & Roses Community Fund are crucial for groups that lack traditional funding due to their commitment to amplifying marginalized voices. The fund emphasizes long-term strategies that foster sustainable social change in the Philadelphia area.

The Joseph Robert Foundation Grant provides essential funding for non-profit organizations focused on the arts, animal welfare, and environmental protection. Based in Pennsylvania, the foundation prioritizes smaller local organizations in the mid-Atlantic region, offering grants typically under $10,000. It encourages innovative projects and supports first-time grant seekers, prioritizing those with limited resources. Organizations can apply for general operating support or specific project funding to further their missions and impact their communities.

The ASHRAE Region III Setty Family Foundation Scholarship supports undergraduate students pursuing engineering degrees in HVAC&R fields. Applicants must maintain a GPA of 3.0 or be in the top 30% of their class. Eligible institutions include those hosting an ASHRAE student branch or accredited engineering programs. This scholarship promotes academic excellence and sustainable practices in the built environment, aligning with ASHRAE's mission to advance technology and human well-being.

Eligible applicants must maintain a minimum GPA of 3.0. The Steven K. Dentel AEESP Award for Global Outreach recognizes faculty excellence in environmental engineering outreach. This annual award honors individuals who significantly contribute to global community health through education, research, and mentorship. Recipients receive a $500 cash award and a plaque. Nominations from students are welcomed, and past nominations can be modified within three years. This award aims to highlight sustained leadership and service in the environmental engineering field.

About Northeast SARE

The Northeast Sustainable Agriculture Research and Education (SARE) Program offers grants and education to farmers, educators, service providers, researchers and others to address key issues affecting the sustainability of agriculture throughout our region.

The program serves Connecticut, Delaware, Massachusetts, Maryland, Maine, New Hampshire, New Jersey, New York, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island, Vermont, West Virginia, and Washington, D.C. The program is administered by Northeast SARE's host institution, the University of Vermont.

Farming Community Grant Program

The Northeast SARE Farming Community Grant applies social science research and education projects that strengthen farming and food systems at the community level.

These projects explore innovative approaches to improving the health and sustainability of agricultural communities in the Northeast. This program supports projects that are grounded in community partnerships and informed by the lived experiences of farmers. It encourages collaboration among farmers, service providers, researchers, and nonprofit organizations to co-create solutions that are responsive to local needs and scalable across the region.

This program encourages innovative solutions to challenges in farming and food systems in the Northeast USA, including but not limited to the areas of: Marketing and business; Crop production; Raising livestock; Aquaculture; Economic and social sustainability; Ecological knowledge; Projects related to climate and/or bioenergy work that provide direct or indirect benefits to farmers,ranchers, and private foresters; and more.

Technical Assistance Program

Applicants and grantees of the Farming Community Grant Program are eligible for Technical Assistance (TA) provided by Northeast SARE’s Technical Assistance Providers.

Funding: This grant is reimbursement based; you must spend money to receive the grant funds.

The DE Urban and Community Forestry Grant Program aims to enhance Delaware's urban tree canopy through quality tree planting and management projects. It encourages sustainable forestry practices, improves stormwater management, and promotes diversity and inclusion in urban forestry efforts. By funding tree planting and management initiatives, this program seeks to improve air quality and foster community involvement in stewardship of urban forest resources.

The Dunkirk Community Funds: Dr. H. L. Shroyer Christian Love Scholarship, established in 1970, provides scholarships to high school graduates from Jay County and nearby areas who exemplify Christ’s love in their daily lives. The scholarship aims to support students who demonstrate strong moral character and faith through an essay on the significance of Christ’s love. This fund was transferred to the Portland Foundation in 2023, enhancing its mission to foster community growth and opportunity.

The Delaware Division of the Arts provides General Operating Support Grants to nonprofit organizations focused on the promotion and teaching of the arts. Eligible organizations must be based in Delaware, have a stable board, and demonstrate a history of community service. Grants support annual operating expenses, allowing for year-round arts participation. A staggered three-year application cycle ensures ongoing support while minimizing the application burden. These grants foster artistic growth and community engagement in Delaware.

The Chesapeake Bay Green Streets, Green Jobs, Green Towns (G3) Grant Program, funded by the EPA and Chesapeake Bay Trust, supports innovative green infrastructure projects enhancing community livability. With funding opportunities ranging from conceptual plans to full project implementation, this program aims to reduce stormwater runoff, improve urban green spaces, and boost local water health within the Chesapeake Bay watershed. Eligible locations include parts of Delaware, Maryland, Pennsylvania, and Virginia, as well as New York.

The Delaware Watershed Conservation Fund, initiated in 2018, aims to enhance ecosystems in the Delaware River watershed through grants supporting habitat restoration and water quality improvement. With $72.1 million awarded to 239 projects, it has significantly impacted over 26 miles of riparian habitat and 77 miles of stream habitat, along with conserving 1,176 acres of wetlands. This initiative, funded by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, also emphasizes outdoor recreation and community vitality in the region.

The Pennsylvania Heartland Unit Scholarship offers a $2,000 award to students actively engaged in horticulture or related fields. Eligible candidates include full-time undergraduates entering their sophomore, junior, or senior years, as well as graduate students enrolled in pertinent programs. Applicants must reside in Southeast Pennsylvania, encompassing counties such as Berks, Bucks, Chester, and others. This scholarship encourages students to deepen their understanding of horticulture and contribute to their communities.

The Rural Library-Based Health Access Grant by the Delaware Division of Public Health aims to enhance community health services through libraries. This initiative focuses on providing essential resources such as telehealth technology, private consultation spaces, and health education. By fostering access to health navigation and enrollment assistance, the program seeks to improve overall health outcomes and ensure sustainable support for Delaware's communities.
