Program Description

Tau Grants are intended to strengthen the health and well-being of communities across our six-county region. These grants specifically support small nonprofit organizations that expand access to healthcare services or promote economic mobility. We are especially interested in organizations that both serve and are led by people from historically marginalized communities, including BIPOC (Black, Indigenous, and People of Color), LGBTQ+ individuals, people with disabilities, and immigrants. Tau Grants provide unrestricted general operating support to help these organizations thrive.

General operating grants strengthen the organization’s overall mission and goals and further its charitable purpose. The focus is not on specific projects or programs. Examples include strategic planning, technology upgrades, audits, and infrastructure costs such as utilities, rent, and personnel.

Economic mobility is the ability of individuals to improve themselves and their families' economic condition.

Examples may include organizations focused on:

The Loye and Alden Miller Research Award, presented by the American Ornithological Society, recognizes lifetime achievements in ornithological research. The DFO Research, Education, and Conservation Grant supports projects focused on birds and their habitats, prioritizing initiatives in the Denver area and Colorado's Front Range. Established in 1994, the fund encourages research, education, and conservation efforts with grants typically under $2,000. Recent funded projects include studies on owl habitats and educational programs for young birders. The fund aims to advance knowledge and appreciation of avian species through targeted financial support.

The AISES Indian Motorcycle Academic Scholarship offers $5,000 annually to support Native students pursuing degrees in STEM fields. Biogen General Grants

Funding to support a project or program that does not fit any of the other defined grant categories.

The Horton PhD Research Grant supports up to three Ph.D. students annually in hydrology and related fields, funded by the Robert E. Horton Fund. It provides a maximum of $10,000 for research and travel, along with $500 for U.S. and Canadian applicants participating in AGU's annual meeting. Eligible students must be active AGU members, enrolled for the award's duration, and meet all application requirements. This grant promotes excellence in hydrological sciences.

The Purple Martin Conservation Association offers the PMCA Research and Conservation Grant to support research on Purple Martins. This grant aims to promote conservation efforts and may cover expenses such as travel and supplies, though it does not fund salaries or overhead. Eligible applicants include students and professionals engaged in Purple Martin research, with a focus on projects that enhance the species' habitat and well-being.

Patagonia’s Corporate Grant supports grassroots organizations focused on bold, direct-action campaigns that address the root causes of environmental issues. The program emphasizes equity, inclusivity, and long-term change, targeting communities affected by environmental exploitation. Grants are awarded to innovative groups within the US and Canada, fostering civic engagement and measurable objectives. Patagonia prioritizes funding for initiatives that confront systemic bias and promote environmental justice, ensuring that diverse voices are represented in the environmental movement.

The Friends of Reservoirs: Mossback Grant offers three grants of $1,000 in Mossback products to eligible members of Friends of Reservoirs organizations.
