The Environmental Justice Thriving Communities Grantmaking Program, led by The Minneapolis Foundation, supports community-based nonprofits in the Great Lakes region. With a focus on underserved communities, grants will total $40 million over three years, aiming to enhance environmental health, education, and resilience. The program prioritizes applications from federally recognized tribes and organizations with limited budgets, fostering inclusive community engagement and sustainable development. Eligible projects include environmental assessments, public health initiatives, and job training.

The Fred and Barbara Erb Family Foundation supports arts and culture initiatives in Southeast Michigan, with a focus on strengthening jazz culture and mentorship traditions. They provide funding for professional development opportunities for artists and promote audience engagement through music education. Since its inception, it has invested over $180 million in environmental, cultural, and educational initiatives. As it transitions to spend down its assets by 2034, the Foundation aims to make bold, impactful investments that address urgent community needs and promote sustainable development.

The Fred and Barbara Erb Family Foundation is dedicated to fostering sustainable business growth in Southeast Michigan. With a commitment to environmental stewardship, the Foundation supports initiatives that leverage funding to create favorable conditions for small businesses. By promoting networking and resource sharing, and diversifying industries, they aim to enhance regional resilience. Since 2008, over $180 million has been awarded to initiatives aligned with their mission, with plans to spend down all assets by 2034 to facilitate impactful investments.

The Grand Rapids Community Foundation's Fund for Community Good supports projects that promote equity and justice across various sectors, including education, health, and economic prosperity. Transportation Alternatives Program (TAP)

The Transportation Alternatives Program (TAP) is a competitive grant program for projects such as bike paths, pedestrian and bicycle safety improvements, and preservation of historic transportation facilities that enhance Michigan’s intermodal transportation system and provide safe alternative transportation options. These investments support place-based economic development by offering transportation choices, promoting walkability, and improving quality of life. The program uses federal transportation funds designated by Congress for these types of activities.

Approximately $43 million is available annually:

Greater Milan Area Community Foundation

The Greater Milan Area Community Foundation (GMACF) was born in 2005 from a powerful vision shared by three dedicated residents – Isabelle Schultz, Donald Harkness, and Millard Phillips. Their mission: To improve the cultural, economic, educational and environmental quality of life in the Milan, Michigan area. 

As a geographic affiliate of the Community Foundation of Monroe County, GMACF combines local leadership with proven charitable infrastructure, ensuring Milan-area residents have direct access to grants, scholarships, and funding opportunities focused exclusively on this community’s unique needs and aspirations.

Greater Milan Area Community Foundation Grants

The Greater Milan Area Community Foundation supports projects that strengthen the cultural, economic, educational, and environmental quality of life in the Milan area. Grants are available for initiatives that respond to local needs, build community connections, and benefit residents of the Greater Milan Area.

The Joyce Foundation's Environment Grants focus on addressing critical environmental challenges in the Great Lakes region, such as climate change and water safety. The foundation prioritizes equitable, carbon-free energy solutions and clean water access for all communities. The Michigan Clean Diesel Grant Program, managed by the Michigan Department of Environment, Great Lakes, and Energy (EGLE), aims to reduce diesel emissions by funding projects that replace outdated vehicles and equipment with electric alternatives. Eligible applicants include both public and private entities, with a total funding pool of $1,152,965. Individual grants range from $25,000 to $500,000, supporting initiatives that promote environmental sustainability and align with Michigan's decarbonization goals.

Bell's Brewery Small Grassroots Grants support projects focusing on water stewardship across the Great Lakes watershed.
