What We Fund
The Dunham Foundation is committed to providing positive, multi-generational support to all individuals and families in our service area.
We believe that this support lays the groundwork for successful generations to come and builds an infrastructure for a community where all can thrive. The Dunham Foundation invests in the following three areas:
Dunham Foundation Capacity Building Grant
The Dunham Foundation offers Capacity Building Grants to help local nonprofits strengthen their resource development and build effective fundraising strategies that advance their mission. These grants support the hiring of grant writing consultants on a contractual basis or investing in organizational tools that help improve partnership development and cultivate more effective donor relationships. By investing in your organization’s infrastructure, we help you create sustainable funding streams that support your long-term impact in the community.
This fund provides support through two categories: The Grant Writer Resource Fund and the Community Relations Fund. One application serves both funding opportunities.
Grant Writer Resource Fund
We recognize that many nonprofits have staff who juggle multiple responsibilities, including grant writing. This task may not be their area of expertise; however, it is necessary for the organization to remain financially healthy. The Dunham Foundation has created an opportunity for nonprofits that do not have a grant writer on staff to apply for funds – up to $5,000 – that support a contractual grant writer.
Community Relations Fund
The Dunham Foundation also established the Community Relations Fund to strengthen the relationship-building and outreach efforts essential for long-term sustainability. This fund will equip nonprofit leaders with resources to deepen community engagement, improve partnership development, and cultivate donor relationships.
Examples of relationship-building tools could include projects such as:
Nonprofit Animal Shelter Grants
Flexible funding for any nonprofit animal shelter serving Greater New Haven.
The Community Foundation's animal shelter grants are made possible by The Lillian and Henry A. Konopacke Fund. The fund was created in 2013 by the bequest of New Haven native and North Haven resident Henry Konopacke, who worked as a machinist at the Winchester Repeating Arms Factory. Other funds contributing to Animal Shelter grants include the Baxter Fund, Judith Corchard Fund and Diva Fund.
Purpose
The Fund’s intent is to assist nonprofit animal shelters in the Greater New Haven area in performing the services for which they have been established.
Available Grant types

General Operating Support gives nonprofits flexibility to direct their spending where it is needed most and allows greater focus on achieving an organization’s mission.
Multi-Year Regional Civic Health Program Grants
Program support is for organizations based outside Greater New Haven and/or the Valley with a mission dedicated to advocacy, civic engagement, community organizing and journalism. Organizations must have had active programming for 2 years and a budget last fiscal year of >$250,000.

The mission of eligible organizations must focus on civic health, including advocacy, community organizing, civic engagement, and journalism. Fort Dodge Community Foundation and United Way
The Fort Dodge Community Foundation is a unique philanthropic organization. In July 2007, United Way of Greater Fort Dodge and the Community Foundation of Fort Dodge and North Central Iowa merged into one philanthropic organization. Both organizations shared a common mission – to advance the common good and improve the quality of life of people in our community and region through charitable giving. Merging the two organizations provided the opportunity to leverage resources and reduce duplication in philanthropy. This collaborative model is the first of its kind in the nation and offers our community and region a “one-stop-shop,” for community-based charitable giving. The new organization, the Fort Dodge Community Foundation and United Way is certified by the National Council on Foundations and United Way Worldwide.

Funders may also focus their grants on early childhood education programs and teacher training in their respective communities. Many grants require applicants to be 501(c)(3) organizations and may prioritize initiatives serving low-income families and children with special needs.
Grants in preschools typically have the highest concentration of deadlines in Q1, with 29.7% of grant deadlines falling in this period. Funders also seek to enhance school readiness and learning environments, support working families, support young children's development, and improve access to quality early learning programs. There are more than 6,000 grants available and an impressive $2.95 billion in funding available for preschools and early childhood education.
Funding for preschools grants varies widely, with award amounts ranging from a minimum of $0 to a maximum of $188,250,000. Based on Instrumentl’s data, the median grant amount for this category is $32,500, while the average grant awarded is $631,791. Understanding these funding trends can help nonprofits set realistic expectations when applying.
Of the $2.95 billion available in funding, nearly half come from private funders like the Cooke Foundation, the National Education Association Staff Organization, the James C. Stewart Charitable Foundation, and the Bell Charitable Foundation. Some of the key federal grants are from the U.S. Department of Health & Human Services, the U.S. Department of Justice, and the U.S. Department of Labor. There are also quite a bit of state-level organizations that are offering funding for Preschool grants like the Tennessee Department of Agriculture and the New York State Office of Mental Health.
A carefully planned approach is needed in order to successfully win grants for preschools. To improve grant success, nonprofits should concentrate on all of these key areas:
