Great Lakes tribal governments and their designees working on aquatic invasive species management in or near the basin can apply for US Fish and Wildlife Service grants of US $20,000 - US $100,000. Funding supports developing or implementing Tribal Aquatic Invasive Species Management Plans, including outreach, inspections, enforcement, and control efforts in eligible areas such as Itasca County, Minnesota.

Grants from Boreal Waters Community Foundation help organizations advance opportunity, resilience, and belonging through collaborative, community-led projects, systems and policy change, and long-term capacity building rather than short-term direct services alone.

The Minnesota Forest Legacy Grant Program aims to protect the state's forests by providing economic incentives to landowners, promoting sustainable forest management through conservation easements. This initiative, supported by federal and state funds, ensures that forests remain intact, offering vital benefits such as wildlife habitats, clean water, and recreational opportunities. It encourages landowners to maintain forested areas while retaining ownership, thus balancing development and conservation for the benefit of all Minnesotans.

Greater Minnesota Housing Infrastructure Grant Program

Grant funds can be used to cover up to 50% of capital costs of physical public infrastructure necessary to support a qualifying housing development. This may include sewers, water supply systems, utility extensions, streets and more, necessary to support single-family, multifamily, homeownership and rental housing development.

Grants are generally limited to:

• $40,000 per lot for one to four units
• $180,000 per lot for multifamily housing (five or more units/building)
• $60,000 per manufactured housing lot
• No more than $500,000 to any grantee or project over a two year period.

Applicants’ matching funds may include in-kind contributions, such as donation of land.

County fair boards and similar agricultural organizations in Itasca County, Minnesota can seek funding to renovate, update, or construct agricultural buildings and livestock facilities on county fairgrounds. The next funding cycle will open with a request for proposals in late 2026 for the 2027 program year, promoting innovative research and capacity-building efforts within the fisheries sector.

Greater Minnesota Public Infrastructure

The Greater Minnesota Business Development Infrastructure Grant Program helps stimulate new economic development, create new jobs and retains existing jobs through investments in public infrastructure.

It provides grants to cities of up to 50% of the capital costs of the public infrastructure necessary to expand or retain jobs in the area, increase the tax base, or expand or create new economic development.

Award Amounts

Applicants wills be awarded 50% of eligible, capital costs for eligible projects, pending availability of funds. Applicants may receive no more than $2,000,000 in two years for one or more projects. If after five years the project has not proceeded in a timely manner and is unlikely to be completed, the grant will be cancelled and grant money awarded to the city must be returned.

The Rural Family Medicine Residency Grant Program, authorized by Minnesota Statute Sec. 144.1912, aims to support family medicine residency programs located outside the 7-county metropolitan area. The program provides funding to cover training costs for eligible residents, with approximately $1,000,000 available this cycle. Each new residency position may receive up to $400,000 in funding for a maximum of three years, promoting the training of family physicians in underserved communities.
