Borealis Philanthropy is a philanthropic social justice intermediary that works to resource grassroots leaders and social justice movements for transformative change. We help funders expand their reach and strengthen their impact through donor collaboratives that support a variety of issues, communities, and movements. Borealis is home to nine donor collaboratives, including the Disability Inclusion Fund and Disability x Tech.

The DIF x Tech initiative, supported by the Ford Foundation’s Technology & Society Program and the MacArthur Foundation’s Technology in the Public Interest, invites proposals that are working to bring about transformational change at the intersections of disability, justice, and technology

About the Disability Inclusion Fund and DIF x Tech

The Disability Inclusion Fund (DIF) supports U.S.-based groups run by and for people with disabilities to lead transformational change. The Fund is supported by donors including the Presidents’ Council on Disability Inclusion in Philanthropy, which is comprised of foundation presidents who are committed to disability inclusion as part of improving diversity, equity, and inclusion within philanthropy.

Part of the efforts of disability rights and justice includes the ways disability and technology are working towards shared goals in our movements. This newly launched initiative is housed at the Disability Inclusion Fund (DIF) and supported by Ford Foundation’s Technology & Society Program and the MacArthur Foundation’s Technology in the Public Interest. 

DIF x Tech Fund Values

All Disability x Tech award decisions will align with the DIF guiding values. The DIF guiding values are:

• Participation: Movement funding accountable to the disability rights movement. Those impacted by injustice/exclusion should be involved in strategies to advance justice/inclusion.
• Intersectionality: Acknowledging that disabled people have multiple and intersecting social and political identities that can influence their ability to have access and inclusion including race, gender identity, class, sexual orientation.
• Radical inclusion: Deeply committed to removing barriers and ensuring access so that those most affected by intersecting identities can participate, valuing lived experience.
• Leadership of those most impacted by ableism: Emphasis is given to organizations led by people subject to systemic bias and impacted by underrepresentation, particularly disabled people of color, queer, gender nonconforming and women with disabilities.
• Cross-movement solidarity: Intentional focus on collaboration and bridge- building amongst disability justice activists and across movements.
• Sustainability: Resources and tools that support the growth of grassroots disabled-led organizations, and expand operational capacities for ongoing movement building.

• Partnerships between disability-focused engineering design labs and maker spaces within schools, centers for independent living, or local nonprofit organizations.
• Permissible Policy Work:
  • We may support nonpartisan policy education and advocacy related to disability and technology. Any lobbying must remain within applicable 501(c)(3) limits and Borealis grant restrictions.

The PCA J.P. Gleason Research Fellowship Program, offered by the Portland Cement Association, supports graduate students in engineering and physical sciences. The program aims to enhance public understanding of cement and concrete uses while addressing urgent sustainability challenges. Each fellowship provides a $35,000 grant to cover educational expenses, fostering research that optimizes cement manufacturing and promotes environmental sustainability, particularly in the context of climate change.

The NCMA Education and Research Foundation Grant aims to support the concrete masonry and hardscape industry through research and educational initiatives. With over $2 million invested, the Foundation invites proposals from qualified professionals, emphasizing national and regional benefits. Eligible projects should focus on workforce development, educational opportunities for students, and collaborative efforts with other organizations. Notably, certain entities, such as those involved in political campaigns or proprietary projects, are ineligible for funding.

The John and Marlene Heslip Architecture Student Scholarship Program supports full-time undergraduate and graduate architecture students at accredited institutions in the U.S. and Canada. With a focus on innovative design using manufactured concrete masonry and hardscape products, the program awards a $5,000 scholarship each academic year. The scholarship aims to advance the education of future architects while fostering a commitment to excellence and diversity in the field.

The Paul and Helen Lenchuk Engineering Student Scholarship Program, established by the NCMA Education and Research Foundation, aims to support full-time graduate students in engineering fields across the U.S. and Canada. With a focus on innovative uses of concrete masonry, this program awards a non-renewable $5,000 scholarship annually. Eligible candidates must maintain a minimum 3.0 GPA and demonstrate proficiency in English, ensuring a commitment to advancing the concrete masonry and hardscape industry.

The Illinois Community Canopy Grant, offered by Trees Forever, supports disadvantaged communities in enhancing their tree canopy through tree planting projects. Grants range from $3,000 to $15,000 for first-time applicants, with eligibility for up to $20,000 for milestones like establishing a tree board. The program emphasizes volunteer involvement and requires a diverse selection of tree species to promote long-term forest health. This initiative aims to fortify community forests and prepare for environmental challenges.

The Illinois Community Canopy Grant Program offers funding for tree inventory and management plans to disadvantaged communities. With up to $25,000 available, this program aims to enhance urban canopies and promote sustainable management practices. Communities can engage certified professionals to complete their inventories, ensuring data accuracy for future tree planting initiatives. Priority is given to those without a complete digital inventory or with outdated data. This initiative supports environmental stewardship and community development.

The Illinois Community Canopy: Tree Removal Grant Program, funded by Trees Forever, aims to assist communities in managing their tree canopies by providing grants for the removal of dead, dying, or damaged trees. This initiative is crucial for safety and environmental health, especially in areas affected by the Emerald Ash Borer and natural disasters. Eligible communities can also apply for tree planting grants to replace the removed trees, fostering a sustainable urban ecosystem.

The Dr. Mark K. Setter Leadership in Periodontology and Dental Implantology Award honors the legacy of Dr. Mark Setter, a distinguished figure in periodontology. Established by the AAP Foundation, this annual $10,000 award recognizes a full-time periodontal resident who exemplifies exceptional leadership qualities in promoting periodontology and dental implantology. The recipient is selected based on their impact on peers and the community, underscoring the importance of mentorship and the advancement of the field.

The Charles W. Finley Visiting Scholar Education Grants, established by the American Academy of Periodontology Foundation, honor Dr. Finley's legacy by providing $2,000 grants to accredited U.S. periodontal programs. These funds support honoraria, travel, and seminars featuring prominent speakers in periodontology, requiring matching funds from the institutions. The grant also mandates a formal presentation to the entire dental school, fostering educational opportunities for students and faculty alike.

The AAP Foundation Fellowship offers financial support for the Institute for Teaching and Learning in the Health Professions, covering full tuition for its Program for Dental School Faculty. This $3,500 fellowship is designed for periodontists pursuing teaching roles, providing essential skills in academic environments. The program includes comprehensive training, interactive learning methods, and mentorship, enabling participants to successfully transition into educational positions and develop their careers as dental educators.

The Kramer Scholar Award for Excellence, funded by the American Academy of Periodontology, offers a $10,000 scholarship to outstanding third-year students enrolled in accredited U.S. periodontal graduate programs. Selection is based on academic achievement, personal integrity, leadership, and community involvement. Finalists must present their application research at the AAP Annual Meeting. This prestigious award aims to encourage excellence in periodontics through support and recognition of dedicated students.

The AAP Teaching Fellowships, funded by a $1 million commitment from the American Academy of Periodontology, aim to support early-career periodontal educators by providing $25,000 in debt relief. These fellowships are available to qualified faculty within their first three years of full-time teaching at U.S. periodontal training institutions. Each Teaching Fellow receives $5,000 annually for five years, contingent upon continued teaching. Interviews for finalists will occur during the AAP Annual Meeting at their own expense.

The Dr. Colin Richman and Family Perio.-Ortho. Interface Award fosters innovative research at the intersection of orthodontics and periodontology, addressing critical issues such as alveolar bone deficiencies and airway management. Annually, $20,000-$40,000 will be awarded to support clinical or basic science research aimed at enhancing patient outcomes through collaborative treatments. This grant aims to complement existing institutional support rather than replace it, ensuring that groundbreaking research in this field continues to thrive.

The CDBG Economic Development Program, managed by the Illinois Department of Commerce and Economic Opportunity, provides grants to local governments to support private businesses that create or retain jobs for low-to-moderate income workers. Grants can be used for public infrastructure improvements and are awarded based on project feasibility and need, with a ceiling of $1,000,000 per award, ensuring economic growth in eligible communities.

The AMA Foundation's Physicians of Tomorrow Scholarship offers four $10,000 awards for medical students pursuing sleep medicine in 2025. Eligible applicants must be entering their final year, demonstrate financial need, and express interest in sleep medicine in their personal statement. This scholarship aims to support students dedicated to excellence in medical education and the advancement of sleep medicine as a vital field in healthcare.

Established in 1943, the foundation prioritizes health equity through strategic partnerships aimed at reducing cancer burdens, preparing healthcare professionals, and enhancing crisis response efforts. Eligible applicants include national and local nonprofits targeting specific regions in the U.S. and Canada. The foundation emphasizes projects that align with its mission and demonstrate significant community impact.

The Young Investigators Research Forum offers a unique opportunity for early career sleep scientists to enhance their research skills. Funded by the AASM Foundation, this program provides travel scholarships for participants to attend the 2025 forum in Bethesda, MD. Participants will engage with senior investigators, learn about funding mechanisms, and refine their research proposals. This forum is designed to build a supportive network, fostering collaborations and mentorship in the field of sleep and circadian research.

The Strategic Research Grant for Sleep Health Disparities Research, offered by the AASM Foundation, aims to address significant gaps in knowledge related to sleep disorders among disadvantaged populations in the U.S. This initiative focuses on enhancing screening, diagnosis, and treatment effectiveness, while promoting innovative interventions tailored to culturally diverse groups. The grant supports impactful research that seeks to mitigate sleep health disparities, ultimately improving health outcomes for racial/ethnic minorities, socioeconomically disadvantaged individuals, and other underserved communities.

The Wilhelm Family Foundation Grants aim to enhance access to artistic resources by funding diverse nonprofit arts organizations. Prioritizing projects that engage with environmental and climate issues, the foundation seeks to support creative expression and collaboration in underserved communities. Emphasizing equality and sustainability, it fosters artistic practices that empower individuals and promote cultural dialogue. Grants are typically awarded to small organizations, focusing on community engagement and longevity in the arts sector.

The BRAIN Initiative seeks innovative proposals for preclinical proof of concept studies on novel recording and modulation technologies aimed at diagnosing and treating central nervous system (CNS) disorders. This initiative supports diverse, multidisciplinary teams to enhance our understanding of the human CNS and prepare technologies for first-in-human studies. Applications are due by 5:00 PM local time, with optional Letters of Intent encouraged 60 days prior to the proposal deadline.

The BRAIN Initiative invites applications for clinical studies aimed at advancing devices for recording and modulation in the human central nervous system. This funding opportunity focuses on small clinical trials that provide vital data for device development, particularly for treatments of central nervous system disorders. Investigators are encouraged to explore both non-significant and significant risk studies to enhance understanding of device functionality and design, ultimately contributing to improved clinical outcomes.

The Illinois Civil Money Penalty Reinvestment Plan aims to enhance the quality of care and life for nursing home residents through grants funded by civil monetary penalties from non-compliant nursing homes. Starting in 2022, the Illinois Department of Public Health will administer these grants, focusing on projects that support resident care improvement, cultural change, and staff training, while ensuring compliance with federal regulations.

The BRAIN Initiative aims to foster innovation in the development of next-generation devices for recording and modulating the human central nervous system. This funding opportunity encourages clinical studies and translational research to create advanced therapeutic and diagnostic devices for neurological disorders. Applicants are advised to submit Letters of Intent 60 days before the proposal deadline. This initiative emphasizes milestones and collaboration with NIH staff throughout the project.

Restore, Reinvest, and Renew (R3) ProgramDescription

Restore, Reinvest, and Renew (R3) Program A. Program Description The Restore, Reinvest and Renew (R3) Program was established by the Cannabis Regulation and Tax Act to make a significant portion of cannabis revenues available to communities that have been most impacted by the inequities created and perpetuated by harmful policies established during the war on drugs era. 

In SFY23, ICJIA was awarded a state appropriation of $75 million to administer the R3 program. A total of $30 million of this appropriation is available to eligible community organizations providing services in the areas of violence prevention, youth development, economic development, reentry, and civil legal aid.

Purpose

The Restore, Reinvest and Renew (R3) program targets significant portion of cannabis revenues to communities that have been ravaged by violence and have been disproportionately impacted by historical economic disinvestment.

• To address systemic disparities, aggressive approaches and targeted resources to support local design and control of community-based responses to these outcomes are required. To carry out this intent, the Restore, Reinvest, and Renew (R3) Program serves to:
• Directly address the impact of economic disinvestment, violence, and the historical overuse of criminal justice responses to community and individual needs by providing resources to support local design and control of community-based responses to these impacts
• Substantially reduce both the total amount of gun violence and concentrated poverty in this state
• Protect communities from gun violence through targeted investments and intervention programs, including economic growth and improving family violence prevention, community trauma treatment rates, gun injury victim services, and public health prevention activities
• Promote employment infrastructure and capacity building related to the social determinants of health in the eligible community areas

Program funds will be used to reduce gun violence through intervention and prevention, improve re-entry and diversion services for people involved with the criminal justice system, provide access to legal representation and advice, encourage investment and economic growth, enhance youth development, and support programs that improve the social determinants of health

The Active Fund Grant, offered by the Kelly Brush Foundation, supports individuals with paralysis from spinal cord injuries in acquiring adaptive sports equipment. This initiative aims to foster active lifestyles and inclusivity through sports. First-time applicants are prioritized for the Fall 2025 cycle, with grants averaging around $3,500, though they can vary.
