The School Action Fund (SAF) aims to enhance access to quality education by supporting districts in implementing whole-school strategies. This initiative focuses on addressing community needs and tackling chronic underperformance, ultimately striving to ensure that more students can attend A/B-rated campuses. The upcoming 2026-2027 SAF grant will specifically assist Restart Action grantees in achieving Resource Campus designation, paving the way for improved educational opportunities within their communities.

The NYSCA Arts Bring Change (ABC) Grants support local cultural organizations and artists who collaborate with public schools to provide K-12 students with engaging artistic experiences. Funded by the New York State Council on the Arts, this program emphasizes art exploration and requires projects to include hands-on learning sessions. Applicants must demonstrate a partnership with schools and meet specific eligibility criteria, ensuring impactful and meaningful artistic education for students.

The SHAPE America: Mentor of the Year Award recognizes an exemplary role model committed to fostering student engagement in professional activities. Candidates must have a minimum of three years of membership in SHAPE America and serve as full-time faculty at a higher education institution. This award emphasizes mentorship through professional behavior, involvement in student projects, and providing academic guidance, ensuring that students are well-prepared for their future careers.

Our Story

The IBMA Foundation was created by the International Bluegrass Music Association in 2007 with a bequest from the Richard Barnhart estate. Mr. Barnhart was a musician from northern Virginia who loved bluegrass and wanted to support educational programs for children. Since the beginning, our goal has been to support bluegrass-music-related educational, literary, artistic and historic preservation activities.

In our early years we produced Discover Bluegrass, an educational video that has been used in thousands of classrooms and libraries around the world. We have hosted dozens of teacher workshops and artist trainings. We created a bluegrass lesson plan competition and provided a network for leaders of after-school bluegrass programs.

Our project grants, which now total $25,000 a year, support bluegrass-related initiatives throughout the world. We also fund Bluegrass in the Schools Mini-grants ($7,000/year) which help schools to hire bluegrass bands for school programs. The Rosenberg Bluegrass Scholar Award recognizes excellence in academic research. Six college scholarships are granted for students working in various areas of the bluegrass music industry. The Arnold Shultz Fund supports increased participation of people of color in bluegrass music with grants that total $30,000/ year. Fletcher Bright Memorial Grants for Young Musicians (age 18 and younger) help young people go to bluegrass music camps and workshops, take lessons, and purchase educational materials. 

Bill Breen Bluegrass Youth Education Fund

The Bill Breen Bluegrass Youth Education Fund was initially financed by friend and colleague, Susie Stephenson. The fund is an option for donors who want to help young people experience and learn to play bluegrass music. Instead of funding a specific scholarship or grant, the Breen Fund will be used by the IBMA Foundation where needed most, in a variety of ways that benefit individuals age 21 and younger. Based in Chicago, Illinois, Bill was an Associate Professor and Professor of Finance at the Kellogg Graduate School of Management at Northwestern University from 1971-2002, going on to serve as Chairman of the Finance Department and Head of Doctoral Studies for the Kellogg School. In addition to playing the banjo, Bill was an avid sailor and fly fisherman, and he never met a dog he didn’t like. His friends and family say it’s fitting that a man so passionate about the banjo, bluegrass music, and education is memorialize with a bluegrass youth education fund.

The Georgia Outdoor Learning Demonstration (GOLD) Grant aims to enhance outdoor learning for Georgia's PK-12 public school students. Funded by the Georgia Department of Education and the Environmental Education Alliance, this initiative offers grants ranging from $500 to $5000. A minimum of 18 grants will be awarded to support professional development for educators, improve schoolyards, provide supplies for outdoor learning, and facilitate field trips, ensuring engaging, high-quality educational experiences.

The Callahan Foundation Grant supports non-profit organizations in Northeast Ohio that demonstrate exceptional leadership and create valuable community contributions. Established in 1968, the foundation prioritizes funding for arts, education, and social services, focusing on projects that enhance access to higher education and healthcare for disadvantaged populations. Organizations can apply for capital projects, operational support, and leadership development funding, fostering sustainable growth and innovation within the region.

The Kahlert Foundation Utah Grant supports nonprofit organizations in Salt Lake, Summit, and Utah Counties, focusing on Health Care, Education, Youth Programs, Veterans, and Human Services. With a commitment to improve access to quality health care and education, the Foundation allocates significant funding to enhance community well-being. Their grants target various initiatives including medical care, educational programs, and youth development, aiming to empower individuals and strengthen local communities. This holistic approach fosters a brighter future for Utah residents.

The Weld Trust's Flagship Grants support significant community projects in health and education for nonprofits and schools in Weld County. Grants typically exceed $750,000 and require additional funding sources, covering 15-35% of project costs. Eligible applicants must be tax-exempt organizations or operate under a tax-exempt nonprofit. These grants aim to foster partnerships that address fundamental issues and deliver measurable outcomes, particularly in rural areas where resources are limited.

The Weld Trust offers Cycle Grants to nonprofits, schools, and government entities serving Weld County residents. They accept Letters of Inquiry three times a year for various initiatives including access to resources, childhood literacy, and food security. Eligible organizations can receive up to two grants per cycle and six per year, with funding available for indirect costs up to 15%. This initiative aims to foster health and education within the community.

The Suncoast Credit Union Foundation Grant Program aims to enhance the education, health, and emotional well-being of children within the community. Funded entirely by the Suncoast Credit Union, it supports local initiatives through a unique program where every debit or credit card purchase contributes to the foundation. Since its establishment in 1990, it has allocated over $53 million in funding and scholarships, emphasizing measurable results and compliance with anti-discrimination laws for eligible organizations.

The Artists and Culture Bearers in the Schools grant by the Southeastern Minnesota Arts Council aims to enhance the arts curriculum in K-12 non-religious schools by providing students opportunities to collaborate directly with artists and culture bearers during school hours. This initiative not only supports artistic growth but also fosters a deeper appreciation for cultural expression within the community. Grant amounts range from $2,000 to $4,000, and applications are accepted until funding is exhausted.

The OneAmerica Financial Community grant supports 501(c)(3) organizations focused on education, workforce development, safety, wellness, and community vibrancy. With a commitment to making a difference, OneAmerica aims to transform lives through strategic philanthropy. Their initiatives include disaster relief, arts support, and civic engagement, fostering resilient communities. By investing in meaningful change, they build a foundation for shared success across the country, ensuring that community needs are met and future generations thrive.

The Watershed Education Scholarship, offered by the North Bay Watershed Association (NBWA), provides financial support for students of all ages who reside or work within the NBWA boundary. This scholarship aims to fund educational endeavors in environmental sciences, engineering, or water industry certifications. With awards up to $1,000 announced annually, the NBWA encourages projects that promote stewardship and benefit the entire North Bay watershed community.

The National Girls and Women in Sports (NAGWS) Legacy Award, established by SHAPE America, honors exemplary contributions to increasing opportunities for women in sports. This annual award recognizes current SHAPE America members who submit impactful proposals related to women's sports, with a monetary prize of $1000. The award will be presented at the National Convention & Exposition, with a special deadline of November 1st. Nominations can include various initiatives aimed at empowering women in sports.

The Measurement and Evaluation Lifetime Achievement Award recognizes a distinguished SHAPE America professional who has significantly impacted measurement and evaluation in health and physical education. This prestigious award highlights the importance of scholarly achievement and the influence of national standards in enhancing educational practices. It aims to honor those who have dedicated their careers to improving the quality of health and physical education, ultimately promoting healthier lifestyles for students across the nation.
