Best Grants for Teachers Continuing Education in Michigan

The Saginaw Community Foundation (SCF) is a tax-exempt charitable organization created by and for the people of Saginaw County. Unlike a private foundation, SCF’s assets come from any number of individuals, corporations, foundations and organizations interested in improving the quality of life in our community. These gifts range in size and purpose, depending upon the interests of individual donors. Some funds are given for specific charitable purposes; others are unrestricted so they may be used to meet the changing needs of our community.

Steven Kyle Kowalewski Memorial Scholarship

The Steven Kyle Kowalewski Memorial Scholarship was established in 2015 to honor the memory of a young man with a desire to know Jesus Christ and serve in the ministry. Steven had a servant’s heart and a gentle spirit. Steven was a gifted writer who was quick to listen and slow to speak. He used those qualities to encourage others. It is the hope of the Kowalewski family that this scholarship will help prepare those students with a calling to see lives changed through the good news of Jesus Christ.

The next funding cycle will open with a request for proposals in late 2026 for the 2027 program year, promoting innovative research and capacity-building efforts within the fisheries sector.

Background

The Access grant program provides funding to increase access to the Great Lakes for shore-based angling and tribal fishing. The request for proposals (RFP) is planned for release every other year in the summer on even number years (e.g., 2022, 2024, 2026, etc.). Funding is limited to sites within the state of Michigan and geographic priority will be given to sites within the Lake Michigan basin, although the GLFT will consider projects throughout the state.

Funding Priorities

The Trust’s priorities for the Access grant category are:

• Capital improvement and renovation of existing access sites, previously funded by the GLFT or other funding sources, that have exceeded or are nearing the end of their planned lifecycle.
• Development of new high-value sites that fill a gap in access. Eligible sites may be located on the Great Lakes or on tributaries below the lowermost barriers.

The Strategic Alliance Matching Grant - Division II offers financial support to enhance ethnic minority and gender representation in mid- to senior-level athletics administration roles across NCAA Division II institutions. The Kelly Carman Memorial Scholarship supports full-time junior, senior, or graduate students at Western Michigan University College of Education and Human Development, particularly those pursuing early childhood or elementary education. Notably, the foundation excludes support for individuals, political groups, and projects typically financed by governments, ensuring its resources benefit the wider community.

Saginaw Community Foundation – Collaborative Scholarship

The Saginaw Community Foundation (SCF) established the SCF Collaborative Scholarships in 2006 as a collaboration of tributes to individuals and organizations. This 2007 scholarship is made possible, in-part by the generosity of our donors and in memory/tribute of the following: Rev. Dr. Roosevelt Austin, Sr., Dorothy and Robert Blue, Shamonica Brown, Zoetta Davis, C.K. Eddy Memorial Fund, Joseph M. Godard, Kanika Goodman, Michael Jeffers Memorial Fund, Parker Thomas Miller, Burris and Kathie Smith, and Carman “Cart” Washburn.

The Mandy's Promise Scholarship, created by Robert and Patricia Schmidt, supports students pursuing veterinary medicine at public colleges in Michigan. Named after their beloved beagle, Mandy, this scholarship aims to nurture future veterinarians and technicians who will care for animals. Eligible applicants are those with financial need, who have attended a Michigan high school, and are enrolled in a veterinary program. This scholarship reflects the donors' commitment to animal welfare and education.

Paul and Deanna Virciglio Scholarship

Paul Virciglio, along with his wife, Deanna, has established the Paul & Deanna Virciglio Education Fund, which will be used to award scholarships to students pursuing graduate studies in math or science.

“I noted the dramatic structural changes taking place in the business world as we prepared for the new information society. There’s a demand for higher-skilled employees, which places an emphasis on education, especially in math and science,” said Paul Virciglio.

Michigan students pursuing undergraduate or graduate studies in law-related fields can receive scholarship support for continuing education through the Saginaw County Lawyers’ Auxiliary Scholarship. Grants from Saginaw Community Foundation help Saginaw County residents attending Michigan colleges or universities in areas like paralegal studies, legal assisting, court reporting, or criminal justice, with part- or full-time enrollment and a minimum 2.5 GPA.

The Mary Thompson Foundation, established in 1979, provides essential funding and support to nonprofit organizations that aid the elderly, particularly in Michigan. Originating from the historic Mary Thompson Home for Old Ladies, the foundation continues its legacy by granting resources for medical care, entertainment, and companionship for seniors. The American Honda Foundation provides programmatic support to nonprofit organizations and schools in the U.S., empowering impactful initiatives aligned with community needs. Funding opportunities are available through Honda corporate and Honda USA Foundation, focusing on projects that enhance education and community welfare. Eligible organizations must have nonprofit status or be recognized educational institutions. The application process opens each fall, with funding decisions announced the following spring, ensuring alignment with Honda's commitment to social responsibility.

Michigan student-athletes pursuing undergraduate study can receive scholarship support for college through the Saginaw County Sports Hall of Fame Scholarship. Saginaw Community Foundation offers this award to high school seniors or college students from Saginaw County with at least a 3.0 GPA who have lettered in a varsity sport and attend a Michigan college or university.

The Anna Paulina Foundation, established in 1961, is dedicated to supporting public charities in Michigan, particularly in the Flint area.
