Marshfield Area Community Foundation, Inc. is a public, 501-C-3 charity. There are 30 community foundations in Wisconsin and more than 750 in the nation. The purpose of all community foundations is to accumulate charitable dollars that impact a specific geographic region in areas such as education, the arts, economic development, recreation, environmental protection, health care, and social services. They may be relatively small, as we are (assets of $14 million), or very large, as is the Greater Milwaukee Foundation (assets over $400 million).

Most people are familiar with private foundations, established by individuals, families, or corporations. Typically, in order to establish a private foundation, one has to have considerable wealth. You could say Community Foundations are much more democratic. We are, in a sense, an umbrella foundation containing many small foundations. We call those small foundations “funds.”

Marc & Undine Cross Memorial Scholarship (2025)

The Inja & Kwang Choi, MD Family Scholarship, awarded by the Erie Community Foundation, supports deserving seniors from local high schools who aspire to pursue careers in medicine or engineering. The CFBV Annual Community Grants, offered by the Community Foundation of the Brazos Valley, support charitable nonprofit organizations across seven regions. Applications are accepted year-round, with a review by the Grants Committee in October. Awards are announced during the Foundation’s Annual Philanthropy/Day of Giving Celebration in November/December. Eligible organizations must have I.R.S. 501(c)(3) tax-exempt status, while funding cannot be used for administrative expenses or ongoing program costs.

They actively engage with local communities through job creation and support for various programs, including law enforcement and non-profit organizations. SA Recycling also contributes to community well-being via service and monetary donations, striving to enhance the quality of life for employees and their families.

The Perry J. Gehring Diversity Student Travel Award recognizes outstanding undergraduate and graduate students from underrepresented racial and ethnic groups who are presenting at the Society of Toxicology Annual Meeting. Awardees, selected from participants in the SOT Undergraduate Diversity Program, receive a plaque and a travel stipend to support their attendance. This initiative honors Perry J. Gehring's legacy in promoting diversity in toxicology and encouraging students from diverse backgrounds to pursue careers in biomedical sciences.

The Tennant Foundation offers equipment donations to eligible 501(c)(3) nonprofit organizations in the U.S. that promote a cleaner, safer, and healthier world. Donations focus on organizations that are charitable, educational, scientific, or literary. However, certain groups such as political or religious organizations, social clubs, and private foundations are ineligible. The foundation also considers the impact of donations on its partners and distributors before making decisions.

The Community Foundation of Wabash County offers a wide variety of post-secondary education scholarships to traditional, non-traditional, and graduate students. With nearly 70 different scholarship endowments created through the generosity of our donors, many students are eligible to apply.  

Wabash Baking Powder Company Scholarship

The Wabash Baking Powder Company Scholarship was established to preserve the company legacy as a flourishing enterprise and was once the largest private brand baking powder factory in the world, producing not only baking powder, but a variety of flavoring extracts, gelatin extracts, powdered skim milk, and cocoa for over 200 companies. The Wabash Baking Powder Company was located on the northwest corner of South Wabash Street and Water Street. The building was directly on the Wabash & Erie Canal and was believed to have originally been a warehouse for the import and export of Canal goods and merchandise.

The National Fellowship Program, offered by the Jefferson Scholars Foundation, invites Ph.D. candidates across various disciplines to apply. The program emphasizes the importance of scholarly leadership and aims to foster intellectual collaboration. Eligible candidates must be nearing completion of their dissertation or have a detailed two-year plan. The Richard “Rick” Roy Washburn Memorial Scholarship Fund supports students pursuing construction careers within 75 miles of specific Minnesota high schools. Named after a dedicated Ulland Brothers Inc. employee, this scholarship offers $1,000 annually for up to two years, promoting education in fields like Diesel Mechanics and Civil Engineering. Eligible applicants must maintain a 2.8 GPA and demonstrate community involvement, ensuring they are well-rounded candidates for this financial assistance.

The Paul Lawson Memorial Aviation Scholarship is dedicated to supporting deserving students aged 15-25 from Maryland and West Virginia who are pursuing aviation lessons. Established in memory of Paul Lawson, this scholarship aims to empower young individuals to achieve their dreams in aviation. Offered by the Community Foundation of Washington County MD, it reflects the commitment of local families and organizations to enhance educational opportunities in the community.

John J. Murphy Family Scholarship

Named in honor of John J. "Jack" Murphy, Olean native and former CEO and Chairman of Dresser Industries, this scholarship was established initially through a grant from the Communities Foundation of Texas and is continued with donations from generous donors. Selection criteria includes scholastic achievement, school and community participation, demonstrated leadership potential and financial need.

The Equity in Mathematics Grants (6-12), funded by the National Council of Teachers of Mathematics, aim to enhance the achievement of historically underrepresented student groups in mathematics. Grants support innovative classroom materials and lessons, focusing on effective teaching strategies as per NCTM policy. Eligible applicants include classroom teachers and small groups of educators. Proposals should outline their plan for improving student outcomes while detailing the anticipated impact on underachieving students' performance.

Funded by The Mellon Foundation, these grants foster innovative methodologies and resource sharing across disciplines. By promoting inclusivity in digital humanities, the program empowers scholars to engage with under-studied materials and develop sustainable practices, ensuring broader access to digital tools and expertise for impactful research initiatives.

This funding opportunity aims to bolster the cancer surveillance workforce through educational initiatives. By enhancing collaborations with cancer partners and developing tools for improved data quality, this program will expand the capacity of registrars. Efforts will focus on recruitment and retention, ultimately ensuring compliance with Public Law 102-515. Strengthening the cancer registrar workforce will lead to timely and accurate cancer data submission, supporting public health objectives.

The Radiation Oncology Institute (ROI) Innovation Awards, offered by the American Society for Radiation Oncology, aim to accelerate innovative ideas in radiation therapy. Currently accepting applications for the 2026 awards, the program focuses on optimizing the combination of radiation therapy and immunotherapy to enhance cancer treatment outcomes. By supporting practical research, ROI strives to transform clinical practices and improve patient care in the fight against cancer.

The George H. and Lucille E. Buterbaugh Scholarship Fund, established by the Buterbaughs in 1993, provides financial support to high school seniors from Salisbury, CT, pursuing higher education. This fund honors George and Lucille's commitment to their community, where they lived for over thirty years. The Berkshire Taconic Community Foundation, a private entity, manages the fund, ensuring that local students have the opportunity to achieve their educational goals and enhance their quality of life.

The William J. Newton Memorial Scholarship Fund, managed by the Berkshire Taconic Community Foundation, honors Bill J. Newton's legacy by supporting Berkshire County residents pursuing post-secondary training in trade and industrial fields. Established in 2006, this fund aims to enhance economic mobility and quality of life through education in vocational programs. With a commitment to community impact and innovation, it seeks to empower local individuals to achieve their career aspirations and contribute positively to their communities.

The Stinn & Oebser Scholarship, offered by the St. Croix Valley Foundation, supports students from Pierce Counties (Wisconsin) and the Harlan Community School District (Iowa) pursuing trade schools, colleges, or universities. Eligible applicants are high school seniors with a minimum GPA of 3.0. Selection is based on financial need, work experience, and extracurricular involvement. This scholarship aims to empower local students to achieve their educational goals and contribute positively to their communities.

The Teddy Lee Drumm Memorial Scholarship Fund, established by Ted and Buena Drumm in memory of their son, supports Sharon residents pursuing post-secondary education. It aims to assist motivated students whose financial needs will be significantly impacted by the award. Managed by the Berkshire Taconic Community Foundation, the fund embodies its mission of strengthening communities through philanthropy, ensuring local youth have opportunities for academic success and economic mobility.
