The Community Foundation of the Dan River Region is an independent, public charity established in September 1996 by a steering committee of local civic leaders to gather permanent funds to support our area.

The Foundation’s service area now includes Danville, Pittsylvania and Halifax counties in Virginia as well as Caswell County, NC.

Scholarship Information

Currently, The Community Foundation administers 75 separate endowed scholarship funds. Established by individuals or organizations, these funds help area students achieve their academic and career-oriented goals.

Scholarships through the Community Foundation support individuals of all ages who reside within the Dan River Region – Danville, VA; Pittsylvania and Halifax counties, VA; and Caswell County, NC. In 2025, we awarded more than $370,000 to 152 students.

First Responder-Hero Education Scholarship

Open applications for Danville, Pittsylvania, and Caswell County graduates whose parents are armed forces members or veterans, law enforcement officers, or fulltime or volunteer firefighters, with a preference for graduates whose parents were killed or wounded while performing their duties.

The Alice Haynie Dameron Scholarship, established in 2004, supports high school graduates from Northumberland County, Virginia, with financial need. Preference is given to students affiliated with specific churches in the area. This scholarship aims to foster academic achievement and community service, helping students pursue higher education at accredited institutions. Funded by The Community Foundation for a Greater Richmond, it reflects a commitment to enhancing educational opportunities and empowering local youth.

The Anne B. Taliaferro Scholarship, established by a former Henrico County educator, supports graduating high school seniors from First Baptist Church in Richmond or those from the Richmond area attending Averett University. The scholarship aims to assist students who demonstrate academic commitment and community involvement, facilitating their pursuit of higher education. The Lutheran Church of Our Redeemer Scholarship, established in 2005 by the Lutheran Church of Our Redeemer in Petersburg, Virginia, supports graduating seniors who are communing members of the Church and plan to pursue higher education. In 2024, eligibility expanded to include students from nearby Lutheran churches. This scholarship aims to encourage academic achievement and commitment to worship among local youth, fostering community engagement and educational advancement.

The Virginia Randolph Scholarship, established in 1963, honors the legacy of a pioneering educator in Henrico County. Managed by The Community Foundation for a Greater Richmond, this scholarship supports graduating high school seniors who demonstrate academic promise, community service, and financial need. It ensures a lasting tribute to Virginia Randolph’s commitment to education and helps empower the next generation of leaders in the region. Eligible students can receive tuition assistance for higher education pursuits.

The Northern Virginia First Responders Scholarship Fund, managed by the Community Foundation for Northern Virginia, supports first responders and their dependents by providing financial assistance for higher education. Eligible applicants include active volunteer first responders and their families from specific counties and cities in Northern Virginia. The scholarship prioritizes high school seniors with a minimum GPA of 3.5 and those demonstrating financial need, resilience, and commitment to community service.

The O'Reilly Automotive Foundation Grant focuses on enhancing community welfare through philanthropic initiatives that support economic stability, workforce development, health services, and disaster relief. Established in 2020, the Foundation seeks to empower underrepresented individuals and organizations in the U.S. by addressing vital community needs. It particularly aims to provide assistance to nonprofits that foster positive change and improve quality of life for those in need, ensuring a lasting impact in local communities.
