Enterprise Community Partners

Enterprise Community Partners is a national nonprofit that exists to make a good home possible for the millions of families without one. Home is where life happens, where plans are made, and futures begin. It is the foundation for dignity, health, education, wealth, and community. National Housing Innovation Grant Competition

Home is foundational. It’s where we plant roots, raise and care for our families, and build community bonds. Yet in every corner of the country, millions of people of all ages and backgrounds need a home they can afford.

Wells Fargo is meeting this moment with a powerful grant opportunity. Together with Enterprise, Wells Fargo has launched the third iteration of the Housing Affordability Breakthrough Challenge. The 2026 cycle of the housing innovation competition will identify and propel proven, ready-to-scale solutions that transform current practices and increase housing choice and access.

Eligible applicants will compete for five individual grants of $2 million to advance their innovation and drive meaningful, systems-level change in the housing and adjacent industries. Winners will gain access to mentorship and coaching from industry leaders and experts and join a powerful network of Breakthrough Challenge innovators.

Focus Areas

This third cycle of the Housing Affordability Breakthrough Challenge aims to meet the nation’s affordable housing challenges across all types of communities: Native, rural, suburban, tribal, and urban.

Proposals must encompass one or more of three focus areas:

• Design and Construction
• Finance
• Service Delivery and Programs

Applicants will be asked to show how their proof of concept or pilot program has achieved clear outcomes and success, and provide a clear pathway to expanding the innovation’s reach and impact

Round 1: Criteria and Scoring

Your innovation must meet the criteria below to advance to the official scoring stage.

Type of Community

Innovations can serve all types of communities:

• Rural
• Urban
• Suburban
• Tribal

Location

Priority scoring will be given to applications from entities that are based in – or whose innovations are designed for – one or more of these 28 states, plus D.C.:

Affordability

Innovations must serve residents at these income levels:

• Rental: 80% AMI or below
• Homeownership: 120% AMI or below
• Workforce housing: 120% AMI or below

The Venable Foundation, a corporate funder, provides grants averaging $10,000 to nonprofits focused on human services, legal support, education, workforce development, youth impact, health, environment, and arts. Funding is targeted at organizations in specific regions, including Washington, DC, Baltimore, New York City, Los Angeles, San Francisco, Chicago, Miami, and Denver, reinforcing equitable opportunities for economically disadvantaged individuals.

The Wellspring Foundation of Southwest Virginia offers the HOPE Grant, aimed at supporting nonprofit organizations and governmental entities in enhancing community health and wellbeing. With funding up to $50,000, the grant focuses on projects that address poverty, health challenges, and opportunity disparities in Washington, Grayson, Russell, and Smyth counties. The Foundation emphasizes collaborative partnerships and measurable outcomes, with two funding cycles each year, providing a vital resource for transformative community initiatives.

The Morris & Gwendolyn Cafritz Foundation focuses on improving the lives of underserved individuals in the DC area through grants in five key areas: Arts and Humanities, Community Services, Education, Environment, and Health & Wellness. The Foundation supports organizations that demonstrate cultural competence and systemic change, aiming for self-sufficiency and holistic well-being for all community members. Grants emphasize access to resources and equitable opportunities to foster meaningful community engagement.

The Philip L. Graham Fund Grant focuses on enhancing the Washington, D.C. metropolitan area through substantial annual grants to 501(c)(3) public charities. It supports diverse initiatives in health, education, arts, and community development, prioritizing innovative, one-time projects. Eligible organizations must serve local residents and align with the Fund's giving priorities. Notably, the Fund awarded $4.1 million in 2017 to 138 organizations, with a strong emphasis on health and education, reflecting its commitment to community enrichment.

The Community Grants for Economic Stability aim to foster self-sufficiency in southeastern Virginia by providing funding for programs that help individuals overcome barriers to success. Since 1950, the Hampton Roads Community Foundation has supported initiatives focused on ending homelessness, enhancing workforce readiness, and promoting financial literacy. These grants are available to 501(c)(3) nonprofit organizations that serve residents in South Hampton Roads, ensuring economic stability and improved quality of life for vulnerable populations.

The SCF Community Grants support initiatives that enhance the quality of life in Shenandoah County, Virginia. Focusing on arts, civic affairs, environment, education, health, and social welfare, the Shenandoah Community Foundation welcomes proposals from 501(c)(3) organizations. These grants aim to strengthen community engagement and address local needs, fostering collaboration and innovative solutions for diverse challenges faced by residents.

The Wild East Action Fund aims to enhance community resilience and conservation efforts within the Appalachian Trail landscape. It supports projects that address climate change impacts and foster recovery through community-driven initiatives. Eligible organizations can apply for grants ranging from $5,000 to $400,000, focusing on land protection, conservation planning, and community support. Special consideration is given to projects addressing the immediate recovery from Hurricane Helene, promoting sustainable practices and strengthening community bonds.

The Norfolk Southern Grant aims to support nonprofits in the Hampton Roads community, distributing $1 million each year for five years. It focuses on critical areas such as education, community enrichment, and sustainability, encouraging organizations to address issues like food insecurity, homelessness, and workforce development. Eligible nonprofits must be 501(c)(3) organizations in good standing, operational since at least January 1, 2023, and serving the South Hampton Roads area. This grant fosters impactful community initiatives.

The Semi-Annual Competitive Grant from the Robert G III and Maude Morgan Cabell Foundation supports capital projects for tax-exempt organizations in Virginia. Established in 1957, the foundation emphasizes strategic grants that inspire community engagement and leverage donor generosity. Eligible nonprofits, particularly in the Richmond area, can apply for matching funds to enhance cultural arts, education, and social services. The foundation's goal is to address philanthropic needs while fostering long-term community development.

The Mary Morton Parsons Foundation supports Virginia-based nonprofits focusing on capital projects across various sectors, including arts, education, and conservation. Founded in 1988, it has awarded approximately $73 million to enhance community life and foster civic engagement. Eligible organizations must be 501(c)(3) exempt and not have received funding in the past five years. Applications are accepted online with specific deadlines for the Spring and Fall cycles.

The Richard & Caroline T. Gwathmey Memorial Trust Grants support Virginia nonprofits focusing on critical areas such as basic services, workforce sustainability, and environmental preservation by March 1, as well as arts, culture, and education by September 1. Established in 1981, the Trust prioritizes geographically diverse projects and encourages funding applications from established organizations with clear outcomes and additional funding sources.

Virginia Natural Gas is committed to supporting organizations that assist transitioning military personnel and disabled veterans through its Military and Veterans Grant. This initiative reflects the company's dedication to community service and employee involvement, aiming to make a significant impact in the lives of those who have served. Eligible organizations must be 501(c)(3) tax-exempt entities and operate within the service area of Virginia Natural Gas, ensuring that assistance reaches those in need.

The Amazon Rappahannock Region Community Fund, managed by The Community Foundation of the Rappahannock River Region, will distribute $300,000 in grants to nonprofit organizations in Stafford, Spotsylvania, Caroline, and Louisa Counties. The IMPACT Grant by the Wellspring Foundation supports organizations in Virginia's Washington, Grayson, Russell, and Smyth counties. It provides funding for projects exceeding $50,000, emphasizing partnerships to enhance community health and well-being.
