MassDevelopment

MassDevelopment is the Commonwealth of Massachusetts' development finance agency and land bank. Brownfields Redevelopment Fund

Finances the environmental assessment and remediation of brownfield sites. Eligible applicants include community development corporations, nonprofit organizations, EDICs, and municipalities and their agencies for publicly owned sites with an identified developer. Applicants have a redevelopment project that will commence site work and construction within a short period of time; have a demonstrated immediate funding gap in the development budget; and provide a substantial public benefit to the community they are in by eliminating blight, through the creation of employment or housing opportunities. 

Eligible Projects

Projects eligible for funding through the Rolling Round program include the assessment and/or remediation of environmental contamination when necessary to redevelop vacant, abandoned, or underutilized properties. Above-ground contamination will be considered on a case-by-case basis and may not be used to remediate a building in advance of demolition. Funds may, however, be used for limited demolition to advance additional required environmental testing or assessment.

Environmental Site Assessment Projects

Up to $250,000 is available for environmental site assessment with an eligible scope submitted by a Massachusetts Licensed Site Professional in good standing.

The Mattina R. Proctor Foundation supports vital projects in education, healthcare, the arts, and environmental stewardship, primarily in Maine and Massachusetts. Established in memory of philanthropist Mattina R. Proctor, the foundation aims to fund initiatives that demonstrate a specific need, particularly in music, trades education, public health, and land conservation. The M.S.P.A. Grant, offered by the Massachusetts Society for Promoting Agriculture, provides financial support to projects that enhance agriculture in Massachusetts. With grants ranging from $500 to $25,000, the Society focuses on initiatives that are economically and environmentally sound, promote knowledge of farming, and stimulate research in new areas. Founded in 1792, the Society has a long-standing commitment to advancing agricultural practices and supporting farmers in the region.

The OSI Northeast Resilient Landscapes Initiative Fund supports conservation projects in New England, the mid-Atlantic, and Central Appalachians aimed at preserving biodiversity amidst climate change. This fund provides grants and loans to nonprofits for acquiring climate-resilient lands, enhancing ecological connectivity. Projects must meet specific criteria regarding landscape resilience and stewardship to be eligible. By focusing on high-priority areas, the initiative ensures effective use of resources to safeguard vital habitats and species.

The WHOI Sea Grant Program offers General Program Development Funds ranging from $1,000 to $5,000 annually to support small research projects, educational initiatives, and outreach efforts. These funds aim to enhance strategic goals, with a preference for projects that align with WHOI Sea Grant’s focus areas such as coastal ecosystems and sustainable fisheries. Applicants must be affiliated with a Massachusetts institution and are encouraged to discuss their project ideas with the Research Coordinator prior to application.

The John W. Alden Trust Grant supports organizations in Eastern Massachusetts that provide care and services to children and youth (ages 0-24) with disabilities or those at risk due to social factors. The Washington Trust Charitable Foundation offers grants to 501(c)(3) organizations in Rhode Island, Massachusetts, and southeastern Connecticut. A cornerstone of this partnership has been the development of a streamlined "Gap" Energy Grant funding model that has helped municipal water utilities reduce their energy usage, operating costs, and improve the environment. This grant program “fills the funding gap” by leveraging incentives from energy utilities and other funding sources to jump-start energy efficiency and clean energy generation projects.

The Resilient and Connected Appalachians Grant Program, offered by The Nature Conservancy, provides up to $100,000 for projects that acquire land and easements throughout the Appalachian region. This program emphasizes equitable conservation, aiming to support historically marginalized communities and enhance access to nature while addressing climate change impacts. Projects must demonstrate community engagement and align with the program's goals to protect vital habitats and foster resilience in the face of environmental challenges.

The Berkshire Environmental Endowment Fund Grant, established by the Berkshire Taconic Community Foundation, supports nonprofit organizations and public agencies in Berkshire County to enhance water quality and address related land issues. Since its inception in 2000, this fund has become a vital resource for preserving the region's unique and diverse natural environment, benefiting the local community and ensuring sustainable practices for future generations.

The Commonwealth Hydropower Grant aims to enhance energy output from small hydropower facilities in Massachusetts, promoting modernization and environmental sustainability. With a funding pool of $300,000, the program supports feasibility studies and construction projects that improve energy efficiency or capacity. Cell Signaling Technology’s Environmental Grants support initiatives aimed at ecosystem protection, wildlife research, and environmental education. Priority is given to action-oriented projects with at least 70% of funding allocated to those directly impacting the environment. Applications are accepted annually until May 1st, with a focus on organizations in Massachusetts, particularly the North Shore of Boston. Non-profit status is required, and discriminatory projects will not be funded.

The Community Clean Air Grant Program, initiated by the City of Boston's Air Pollution Control Commission, seeks proposals from nonprofit organizations for projects that reduce urban air pollution.
