Best Capacity Building Grants for Nonprofits

The Rhode Island Foundation's RIF Capacity Building Grants program supports 501(c)(3) nonprofits in Rhode Island. Grants provide funding and technical assistance for strategic planning, business development, and operational improvements to enhance community impact. Building Bright Futures

Building Bright Futures (BBF) works to improve the well-being of young children and families in Vermont. The BBF Network includes 12 Regional Councils, seven Strategic Plan Committees, and the State Advisory Council.

The State Advisory Council advises the Governor and Legislature on the well-being of children in the prenatal period through age 8 and their families. BBF maintains Vermont’s Early Childhood Strategic Plan, a shared vision and roadmap to ensure that every young child in Vermont has the resources, opportunities, and support to thrive.

 Vermont Early Childhood Fund

The Vermont Early Childhood Fund is a Building Bright Futures (BBF) program. VECF grants support creative solutions that will improve the well-being of children from the prenatal period to age 8, their families, and the Vermont communities where they live. These grants are open to nonprofits, businesses, municipalities, and schools.

These are not reimbursement-based grants; grantees will receive the full grant award at the start of the grant period.

Supporting Young Children and Families

VECF is focused on strengthening systems that support Vermont’s young children and families. This funding will prioritize one-time investments that expand capacity, improve infrastructure, and increase reach. The grant round is made possible through a combination of philanthropic support and the Building Bright Futures License Plate fund.

Equity Commitment

BBF envisions a future where every family in Vermont feels welcome, supported, and safe. We prioritize funding programs that address barriers faced by communities most impacted by economic insecurity and that advance equity, belonging, and justice. • Reducing barriers to Child and Adult Care Food Program (CACFP) participation
• Improving dignity and accessibility within food distribution systems

Transportation

• Expanding transportation pilots and regional solutions
• Strengthening low-barrier transportation assistance programs
• Increasing access to micro-transit, flex-route, and on-demand models
• Supporting transportation solutions for families experiencing homelessness, immigrants, and migrant farmworker families

These funding priorities are aligned with Goal 1 of Vermont’s Early Childhood Strategic Plan: All Children and Families Have Their Basic Needs Met.

Ameren Illinois Grants aim to enhance community quality of life through funding in areas like arts, civic engagement, environmental preservation, health services, and youth education. Organizations within the Ameren Illinois service area are eligible, provided they are tax-exempt and do not discriminate unlawfully. Applications are accepted year-round, but those submitted after December 1 may be reviewed the following year. This initiative supports diverse community enrichment and resource provision for vulnerable populations.

The Cemala Foundation Grant focuses on enhancing the quality of life in Greensboro by supporting strategic investments in community projects. With an emphasis on early childhood development, transformational spaces, and workforce training, the foundation aims to build a thriving community. Organizations promoting Continuous Quality Improvement are encouraged to apply for funding. This grant is vital for initiatives that address the evolving needs of Greensboro residents and foster sustainable growth.

The Illinois Criminal Justice Information Authority is offering the Victims of Crime Act (VOCA) Transitional Housing Program Grant, providing $2,830,905 in funding for transitional housing services for victims of crimes. This initiative focuses on individuals affected by domestic violence, human trafficking, and more, ensuring they receive necessary support. Applicants must detail housing models, budget for personnel costs, and outline distinct roles for landlords and service providers, including a mandatory case manager for each program.

The Kings County Conservation Futures Grant provides essential funding for the Land Conservation Initiative, aimed at preserving vital natural and urban green spaces. This grant supports projects like parks, community gardens, and habitat restoration, particularly in underserved areas. Eligible recipients include local governments and qualified nonprofits. The initiative seeks to enhance community access to open spaces, ensuring that all residents can benefit from nature and recreational opportunities.

Watersheds United Vermont 

Watersheds United Vermont (WUV) is a state-wide network of local groups dedicated to the health of their home watersheds.

WUV's mission is to empower community-based watershed groups in all parts of the state to protect and restore Vermont’s waters.

Watershed Groups are broadly defined as a community-based organization working with individuals and communities in their local watersheds to protect and improve water quality, habitat, and flood resilience and to build social and ecological connections with Vermont’s waters. Watershed organizations work with all watershed constituents and do not represent a specific constituency or interest group. 

Enhancement Project Development Grant (EPDG)

Overview

Watersheds United Vermont (WUV) is administering funding under the Enhancement Project Development Grant (EPDG) program, which will support the project development of priority water quality enhancement projects from July 2026 through June 2028. WUV seeks proposals for the development of new enhancement projects and for the development efforts needed between the design and implementation phases of enhancement projects.

The EPDG program is part of WUV’s larger Enhancement Development, Design and Implementation Block Grant (EDDIBG) through the Vermont Department of Environmental Conservation’s (VT DEC) Clean Water Initiative Program (CWIP). WUV has separated out the Project Development portion of this grant as the work completed under project development is significantly different from the work completed under design and implementation.

No match is required under this program. Please note that this funding can be used as match/leverage for other funding sources.

Cambia Health Foundation seeks to improve health care through focused investments in the health care workforce. They aim to expand, diversify, and train professionals to address behavioral health provider shortages. By enhancing both paid and unpaid workforce sectors, Cambia fosters wellness, reduces stigma, and promotes collaborative care models. Their commitment to health equity reflects in their strategic areas of investment, ensuring everyone has the opportunity for better health outcomes.

Les Passees Grants Program, established by Les Passees, Inc., a dedicated women's volunteer organization, aims to enhance the lives of children and families in Memphis. With over a century of service, this program facilitates funding up to $75,000 for eligible 501c3 tax-exempt organizations. The grants support community initiatives aligned with their mission, ensuring a positive impact on families in need. Organizations must comply with specific eligibility criteria, including submitting follow-up reports for previous grants.

The Scaife Family Foundation Grant has been supporting vulnerable community members for nearly 40 years, providing over $180 million in donations to non-profits. The Foundation aims to match organizations with aligned goals, focusing on women and children, addiction prevention, and animal welfare. It offers grants for general operating and program support, prioritizing impactful programs that address societal issues. Notably, the Foundation considers proposals that foster healthy relationships and promote treatment for addiction, enhancing the welfare of both humans and animals.

The U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) is providing funding for research aimed at enhancing rangeland drought forecasts, crucial for effective land management. This project will develop comprehensive ecological drought forecasts and deliver them to resource managers, focusing on restoration efforts in the western U.S. By creating real-time weather data-driven forecasts, the initiative aims to improve decision-making for ecological restoration, wildfire risk management, and sustainable resource development, ultimately supporting the resilience of western dryland ecosystems.

The Community Forest and Open Space Conservation Program, offered by the USDA Forest Service, aims to support Indian Tribes, local governments, and qualified non-profits in acquiring private forest lands to establish community forests. This competitive grant program focuses on protecting forestland from non-forest uses while enhancing public access and community benefits such as recreation and education. Applications are due by October 13, 2026, requiring coordination with State Foresters or Tribal officials.

The Consumers Energy Foundation Grant aims to assist Michigan communities by funding innovative projects that enhance people's lives, protect the environment, and promote economic prosperity. Eligible applicants must align their initiatives with the foundation's focus areas, which include reducing poverty, environmental preservation, and economic development. Notably, the foundation primarily supports tax-exempt organizations based in Michigan, while also considering projects that significantly benefit the state. Applicants are encouraged to review eligibility criteria and grant standards before applying.

The Habitat Conservation Grants program by Wildlife Habitat Canada focuses on supporting vital conservation, restoration, and enhancement projects aimed at protecting wetlands and migratory game birds. With an investment of approximately $150 million, this initiative relies on non-federal matching funds to enhance the ecological integrity of Canadian habitats. Eligible projects include wetland restoration, vegetation planting, and invasive species removal, contributing significantly to the preservation of wildlife and their habitats.

The Canadian Wildlife Habitat Conservation Stamp Program, administered by Wildlife Habitat Canada, funds vital conservation projects across Canada. By leveraging funds from stamp sales and ensuring a matching funds component, WHC supports initiatives aligned with the North American Waterfowl Management Plan. Eligible projects must demonstrate a 1:1 funding match and focus on enhancing habitats for migratory game birds. This program has allocated approximately $150 million to conservation efforts, underscoring its significance in preserving Canada's wildlife.

The Conservation Networking Grant by Wildlife Habitat Canada aims to enhance wetland education and promote hunter recruitment initiatives. It focuses on increasing participation in waterfowl hunting while fostering a commitment to habitat conservation. Eligible projects must demonstrate sustainability and community engagement, aligning with the North American Waterfowl Management Plan. This grant prioritizes actions that support the conservation efforts of local communities and other migratory game birds, ensuring long-term impacts on wildlife habitats.

Competitive Community Grant- Health & Human Services- Spring Cycle

We will support organizations that work to improve the following outcomes in our communities:

• Food security

• Access to health care

• Healthy neighborhood living conditions
• Senior services

Through direct service, policy advocacy, and/or collaboration efforts, priority strategies will address:

• Affordable housing and shelter for homeless, rent-burdened, and at-risk populations, including eviction prevention
• Access to affordable and high-quality food, including food banks, pantries, and community centers that distribute food and promote healthy eating and work to address “food deserts”
• Efforts to address safety for vulnerable populations, including domestic violence and child abuse prevention, bullying prevention in schools, safety issues specific to immigrant populations, low wage workers and communities of color
• Access to health care, including programs providing un- and under-insured populations with culturally appropriate and equitable access to quality health and wellness programs services. Priority will be given to efforts applying social determinants of health lens to the work
• Mental health services, including school-based services, treatment, prevention, and rehabilitation programs targeting marginalized communities, and groups working on cultural and generational trauma
• Building healthy communities, including built environment and infrastructure, environmental quality (toxins and air/water quality), affordable and reliable transportation, and parks and recreation
• Providing services targeted at senior well-being, including memory care, depression, audiology, dementia, exercise, home care, hospice, and medication guidance.
• Systems change, including public policy, civic engagement, community organizing or public information to improve health and wellbeing of local residents

Grant Sizes

We offer $5,000, $10,000, $15,000, or $20,000 general operating support depending on your annual budget:

• Organizations with an annual budget up to $50,000 may apply for a $5,000 grant;
• Organizations with an annual budget between $50,001 - $150,000 may apply for a $10,000 grant;
• Organizations with an annual budget between $150,001 - $500,000 may apply for a $15,000 grant; and
• Organizations with an annual budget of $500,001 or more may apply for a $20,000 grant.

The Emerging Artist Grant, offered by the Guild of Carillonneurs in North America, supports the next generation of carillonneurs by providing financial assistance for education and professional development. Eligible applicants can receive up to $750 or $2,000 depending on their qualifications, which may be used for tuition, travel, and equipment. This initiative aims to foster talent in the carillon community, ensuring a vibrant future for this unique musical art form.

The Wish Book Grant, initiated by the San Jose Mercury News, supports local nonprofits in the Bay Area by providing funding through a holiday fundraising campaign. Each year, approximately 20 grantees are selected based on their impactful initiatives that address community needs, including homelessness, food insecurity, and systemic racism. Since its inception, the program has raised over $12 million, connecting readers with opportunities to support meaningful causes during the holiday season.

The Drought Emergency: Protecting Salmon program by the California Department of Fish and Wildlife aims to support restoration and protection projects that enhance salmon resilience against drought and climate change. This funding opportunity offers up to $10 million for projects in the Scott and Shasta River watersheds, emphasizing collaboration with local tribes and landowners. Eligible projects will focus on improving riparian and aquatic habitats, reconnecting historical floodplains, and enhancing ecological functions.

NAFC Open Grant/Product Donation Applications

The National Association of Free and Charitable Clinics (NAFC) is the only nonprofit 501c(3) organization whose mission is solely focused on the issues and needs of the medically underserved throughout the nation and the more than 1,400 Free and Charitable Clinics that serve them. The NAFC has earned the Platinum Seal of Transparency from GuideStar and a 4-Star rating from Charity Navigator. Founded in 2001 and headquartered near Washington, D.C., the NAFC is working to ensure that the medically underserved have access to affordable quality healthcare and strives to be a national voice promoting quality healthcare for all. Food as Medicine Initiative

The Food as Medicine Initiative, supported by the McKesson Foundation and administered by the NAFC, aims to address food insecurity as a critical driver of health outcomes for uninsured and medically underserved patients. Research continues to demonstrate the strong connection between food insecurity and poor health, including increased risk of chronic conditions such as diabetes, hypertension, obesity, and certain cancers. Through this initiative, NAFC will provide $20,000 grants to member free and charitable clinics to implement or expand food insecurity screening and patient-centered interventions that improve access to healthy food and nutrition education as measured by the US Household Food Security Module or Hunger Vital Signs and patient education focused on food as medicine for eligible patients in order to increase the percentage of patients with improved food security scores within one year of project implementation.

The Appalachian Landscapes Project Capital Grant, offered by the Open Space Institute, supports vital conservation initiatives aimed at preserving biodiversity and enhancing landscape connectivity. Established in 1974, the OSI has protected over 2.5 million acres in the Eastern US and Canada, focusing on land that ensures clean drinking water and wildlife habitats. This grant is specifically for projects within the Appalachian Landscapes Project service area, promoting sustainable community benefits.

Reducing barriers that limit economic opportunity for working Texans

Texas Mutual seeks to invest in initiatives that stabilize working households so Texans can obtain and sustain employment and participate in economic opportunities. We’re looking for organizations aligned with one of the following focus areas:

• Championing working parents by expanding access to quality early childhood education (ages 0-5) or out-of-school time care for children so that parents can obtain and retain stable employment.
• Prioritizing workforce wellness by ensuring working Texans are physically healthy through increased access to primary care.
• Enabling workforce advancement by facilitating access to essential basic needs so that working Texans can obtain or retain stable employment, building a foundation for long-term economic mobility.

Requests should not exceed 10% of the organization’s current operating budget. Only one Texas Mutual community grant may be awarded per organization per calendar year.
