Best Health Care Grants in North Carolina

The Amcor Community Support Grants Program, administered by the Amcor Cares Foundation, provides funding for projects that benefit local communities. The Smiles for Kids Grant Program, funded by the Delta Dental Foundation, supports nonprofit organizations in North Carolina by providing grants focused on children's oral health education initiatives, particularly in underserved areas. Since 2010, over $510,000 has been awarded, benefiting more than 330,000 children and their families. Grants are capped at $5,000 and are limited to one proposal per organization annually, ensuring targeted support for meritorious programs.

Purpose

The purpose of the Early Childhood Education and Development Fund is to ensure that every child in Buncombe County has an equal opportunity to thrive during their first 2,000 days, including access to quality early childhood education. The Fund was established in response to a well-documented local shortage of quality early childhood education programs, barriers that families face in accessing existing programs, including affordability, and a well-documented shortage of qualified teachers and staff in classrooms and centers.

Funding

Grants may be awarded up to the total amount of $4,054,185, the anticipated budget for the Early Childhood Education and Development Fund for FY2027 (subject to budget adoption). On October 30, 2018, the Board of Commissioners for Buncombe County voted to create the Early Childhood Education and Development fund for the purpose of annually investing $3.6 million beginning in the FY2020 budget with an annual increase of 2% in future years. 

Funding is earmarked to support early care and education for children birth through kindergarten. This includes the following categories:

• infants/toddlers – ages six (6) weeks to three (3) years old
• preschoolers – ages three (3) to five (5) years old
• pre-kindergarteners (pre-k) – 4 year old rising kindergarteners (4 years old by August 31st)

State Designated Rural Health Centers Support Grant

Purpose: These grant funds, supported through the North Carolina General Assembly, allow ORH to partner with local communities to provide funding to improve their ability to serve underserved populations who would otherwise be unable to access needed primary care services due to geographic, economic, or other barriers. State Designated Rural Health Centers have become an integral part of the health care safety net for North Carolina’s rural and underserved residents.

The Health Foundation's Challenge Grants aim to enhance health and well-being in Wilkes County, North Carolina, by promoting community-driven solutions that tackle health equity and social determinants of health. These grants support organizations in developing sustainable fundraising programs to meet identified healthcare needs. Eligible applicants include non-profits and governmental entities, while funding is not available for religiously affiliated services. The program encourages innovative approaches to health improvement in the local community.

The Cherokee and Clay County Trust Grant, established in 1973 by W.J. “Dub” Martin, aims to enhance the well-being of residents in Cherokee and Clay Counties, North Carolina. With an average grant size of $1,000 to $5,000 and approximately 15 grants awarded annually, the trust focuses on areas such as education, health, arts, and human services. It prioritizes organizations that assist young people, support churches, and provide essential services to those in need.

Funding caps are set at $700,000 for construction and $300,000 for non-construction projects, with special considerations for distressed counties and workforce development initiatives.

The AmeriHealth Caritas Foundation Grant aims to prevent and mitigate adverse childhood experiences (ACEs) to promote healthier outcomes for children. With a focus on empowering families, healing behaviors, and access to healthcare, the foundation supports nonprofit organizations that provide comprehensive care and resources. Grants range from $100,000 to $250,000, totaling up to $1.945 million for project-specific initiatives. Eligible organizations must be 501(c)(3) nonprofits operating in states where AmeriHealth Caritas Medicaid markets exist.

National Housing Innovation Grant Competition

Home is foundational. It’s where we plant roots, raise and care for our families, and build community bonds. Yet in every corner of the country, millions of people of all ages and backgrounds need a home they can afford.

Wells Fargo is meeting this moment with a powerful grant opportunity. Together with Enterprise, Wells Fargo has launched the third iteration of the Housing Affordability Breakthrough Challenge. The 2026 cycle of the housing innovation competition will identify and propel proven, ready-to-scale solutions that transform current practices and increase housing choice and access.

Eligible applicants will compete for five individual grants of $2 million to advance their innovation and drive meaningful, systems-level change in the housing and adjacent industries. Winners will gain access to mentorship and coaching from industry leaders and experts and join a powerful network of Breakthrough Challenge innovators.

Focus Areas

This third cycle of the Housing Affordability Breakthrough Challenge aims to meet the nation’s affordable housing challenges across all types of communities: Native, rural, suburban, tribal, and urban.

The Universal Leaf Foundation Grants support 501(c)(3) nonprofit organizations primarily in areas where Universal Leaf Tobacco Company operates. Focus areas include education for at-risk individuals, higher education, civic/community arts, and environmental initiatives. The Foundation emphasizes good corporate citizenship and community engagement through financial support and employee volunteerism. Organizations must operate within designated geographic areas and cannot be involved in political advocacy or restrict services based on demographics. Grants aim to enhance community well-being and educational opportunities.

The RHI Legacy Foundation Grant aims to enhance health and wellness in Rutherford County, NC, through funding community-focused programs. It prioritizes initiatives addressing chronic diseases, healthy eating, and active living, ensuring measurable impacts on the local population. Eligible organizations must be 501(c)(3) non-profits and demonstrate alignment with the Foundation's mission. The grant supports sustainable projects that improve overall community health and quality of life.

Funding Opportunity:

Partnerships Supporting Parent/Caregiver Mental Health & Well-being

Across North Carolina, parents and caregivers of young children (prenatal to age five) are experiencing high levels of stress, isolation, and difficulty accessing support. One in three parents report feeling lonely, and more than a quarter report having no one to turn to for support.

Blue Cross and Blue Shield of North Carolina Foundation (Blue Cross NC Foundation) recognizes that caregiver mental health and well-being are foundational to the healthy development and long-term health and well-being outcomes of young children.

While a range of mental health and well-being services exist, these supports are often fragmented and difficult to navigate. At the same time, caregivers vary in the types of support they trust and use, underscoring the need for approaches that are connected, community-rooted, and responsive to family preferences.

We see an opportunity to strengthen and better connect existing supports to improve caregiver well-being, increase social connection, and build stronger pathways to mental health care. By working upstream with families during a critical developmental period, we can promote good mental health and resilience, set the next generation up for success, and prevent the crisis we are seeing in today’s youth.

The N.C. Dental Society Foundation announces the Dental Public Health Award, offering $1,500 to deserving organizations at the Fall 2023 Education Conference. Eligible nominees include tax-exempt nonprofits or government agencies committed to improving oral health outcomes, access to dental services, and public education on preventative practices. Self-nominations are encouraged. Note that past recipients from 2022 must wait until 2024 to apply.

The Innovative Approaches 2.0 initiative by the North Carolina Department of Health and Human Services aims to enhance community systems of care for children and youth with special health care needs (CYSHCN). It focuses on family-driven systems change in areas like health care transition, emergency preparedness, and community accessibility. Grants of $132,400 will be awarded to five entities working across multiple counties to implement sustainable improvements that address the needs of CYSHCN and their families.
