Search Through Biology Grants in California

The Desert Conservation Program, administered by the California Wildlife Conservation Board, aims to protect and restore the Mojave and Colorado Deserts, which are vital for biodiversity and cultural heritage. This initiative, established through the California Desert Conservation Act, focuses on land acquisition, restoration, and enhancing public access while also addressing climate resilience and improving air and water quality. The Land Acquisition Program, administered by the California Wildlife Conservation Board, facilitates the purchase of real property for wildlife conservation. Following a fair market value appraisal, acquisitions occur on a willing seller basis, with evaluations conducted by the California Department of Fish and Wildlife. The San Joaquin River Conservancy, established in 1992, aims to preserve the river's biodiversity and cultural resources while enhancing recreational and educational opportunities. This initiative spans approximately 5,900 acres along a 22-mile stretch of the river, facilitating land acquisition and habitat restoration through the Wildlife Conservation Board. The program supports public agencies, nonprofit organizations, and tribal entities in activities such as property acquisition and habitat enhancement to ensure sustainable access and conservation of the region's natural assets.

The Ocean Acidification, Hypoxia, and Harmful Algal Bloom Solicitation aims to enhance scientific understanding of critical water quality issues affecting California's coastal ecosystems. It provides funding for two tracks: understanding the biological impacts of ocean acidification and hypoxia, and researching harmful algal blooms for early warning and ecosystem resilience. This initiative is part of California Climate Investments, addressing growing environmental threats to coastal communities.

The mission of the California Institute for Regenerative Medicine (CIRM) is to accelerate world class science to deliver transformative regenerative medicine treatments in an equitable manner to a diverse California and world. In support of this mission, CIRM’s governing board approved a structured, data-driven Strategic Allocation Framework (SAF) in 2024 to prioritize resources and maximize the impact of CIRM’s funding.

Designed in response to this framework, CIRM’s new Discovery Programs include complementary funding opportunities that support research at different scales and levels of maturity, emphasizing multidisciplinary innovation, knowledge sharing and leveraging synergies across CIRM-funded programs. These new funding opportunities support comprehensive, discovery research across a diverse range of diseases and bottlenecks to accelerate the development of potential therapeutics and biomarkers in regenerative medicine.

DISC4 Awards

Supporting Multidisciplinary, Collaborative Research

DISC4 supports expansive, cross-disciplinary and integrated studies led by collaborative teams applying a range of technologies and approaches to accelerate foundational insights in disease biology. 

Expected Outcomes

Funded projects are expected to achieve one or more of the following outcomes:

• Discovering novel mechanistic insights or advance our understanding of human diseases;
• Extending understanding of disease mechanisms to all affected human populations;
• Identification and validation of novel therapeutic strategies, targets, and/or biomarker(s).

Focus Area (Fiscal Year 2026/2027): Immune-Tissue Interplay in Disease, Homeostasis, and Repair

CIRM is seeking multidisciplinary proposals focused on elucidating the molecular and cellular mechanisms by which the human immune system interacts with and influences tissues, particularly in the context of pathology, injury or regeneration. While priority will be given to proposals aligned with this focus area, proposals outside this area may be considered if they represent a compelling opportunity to advance DISC4 program goals.

The Biologically Integrated Farming Systems Program aims to promote innovative, plant-based farming systems that minimize chemical pesticide usage in California. This initiative emphasizes environmentally friendly practices and supports growers in transitioning to safer pest management techniques. Key project priorities include exploring alternatives to high-risk pesticides and enhancing agricultural sustainability. With a funding pool of $1 million, the program seeks projects that demonstrate effective pest management strategies while safeguarding human health and the environment.

The Marisla Foundation's Environmental Grant Program focuses on promoting biological diversity and sustainable ecosystem management. Established in 1986, it supports 501(c)(3) organizations and governmental entities in addressing environmental health issues caused by toxic chemicals. The program also encourages international projects through donor-advised fund partners. However, it does not fund individuals or political activities and limits applications from any one organization to one per year, with indirect costs capped at 15%.

The Environmental Grant Program by the Marisla Foundation focuses on marine resources conservation, emphasizing the protection of biodiversity in regions like California, Northwest Mexico, Hawaii, and the Western Pacific. Established in 1986, the foundation supports tax-exempt organizations and encourages sustainable ecosystem management. Grants are not available to individuals or for political activities. The program aims to foster international projects through donor-advised funds, reinforcing its commitment to environmental health.

The Weeden Foundation Grant supports biodiversity conservation initiatives worldwide. It prioritizes projects that protect endangered species, restore habitats, and promote sustainable practices. The foundation funds 501(c)(3) organizations or their international equivalents, focusing on areas such as bird conservation, marine wildlife protection, and systemic support for environmental policies. Applicants must submit a Letter of Inquiry four weeks before the application deadline, and the foundation does not fund multi-year grants or projects outside its focus areas.

The California Wildlands Grassroots Fund Grant supports grassroots activists working to preserve California's wildlands and natural habitats. With a maximum award of $10,000, the fund prioritizes projects focused on conservation, environmental advocacy, and community engagement. Eligible applicants include nonprofits and fiscally sponsored individuals with annual incomes of $200,000 or less. The grant aims to empower communities, particularly in rural areas, to advocate for wildlands protection and biodiversity conservation.

The Tri-Counties Blood Bank Fund Grants, established by the Santa Barbara Foundation, support nonprofit organizations in Santa Barbara County. With nearly $5 million in restricted funds, grants are available for Indigent Care, Education, and Scholarships related to blood services. Eligible organizations must be 501(c)(3) certified, while federal and state-operated hospitals are ineligible. The grant period is up to one year, requiring a final report within 13 months of award. This initiative enhances community health through education and support.

The Pew Biomedical Scholars Program offers significant funding of $300,000 over four years to support early-career researchers in biomedical sciences. The program encourages innovative and impactful research that contributes to human health, requiring nomination from one of the 212 participating institutions. Candidates must hold a doctorate, run an independent lab as an assistant professor, and demonstrate exceptional promise. The Foundation for Sustainability and Innovation Grant aims to support projects that promote environmental restoration, preservation, and education, with a focus on sustainable resource use and community development. This grant encourages innovative approaches that connect urban and rural settings, enhance biodiversity, and foster creativity in addressing societal challenges. Eligible applicants include IRS-designated non-profits that align with the foundation's vision. The foundation also supports small presses and periodicals that creatively address sustainability issues.

The Cytokinetics Communications Grant Program provides five grants of $20,000 each annually to patient advocacy organizations focused on hypertrophic cardiomyopathy (HCM) and heart failure. This initiative aims to enhance communication and outreach efforts, helping organizations expand their community engagement and awareness. By supporting crucial marketing initiatives, Cytokinetics fosters improved resources for advocacy groups, ensuring they can effectively address the needs of patients facing muscle performance challenges.

The W. M. Keck Foundation's Research Grant Program funds innovative medical research and engineering projects that challenge existing paradigms and explore new territories. Eligible applicants include research universities and independent institutes. Grants support groundbreaking technologies and methodologies, with emphasis on high-risk projects that could lead to transformative impacts. However, funding excludes general operating expenses and grants to individuals. The Foundation awards grants biannually, with an emphasis on interdisciplinary approaches.

The Howie Wier Memorial Conservation Grant, offered by the Anza-Borrego Foundation, supports graduate students in ecology and conservation biology. Grants of up to $2,500 are available for field studies in the Colorado Desert and Peninsular Range, honoring Howie Wier's legacy as a passionate naturalist. Proposals are assessed for scholarly merit and project feasibility, ensuring contributions to the region's conservation efforts for future generations.

The Loye and Alden Miller Research Award, presented by the American Ornithological Society, recognizes lifetime achievements in ornithological research. It honors the legacy of Loye Holmes Miller and his son Alden Holmes Miller, who significantly contributed to the field and mentored numerous students. This prestigious award aims to uphold high ethical standards in ornithology and is open to current AOS members, promoting a diverse and supportive community in bird conservation.

The Merit Award for Pain and Symptom Management offers a unique opportunity for eligible trainees and students to showcase their research at the ASCO Annual Meeting. Recipients receive $1,000, complimentary registration, and access to exclusive hotel blocks. Special Merit Awards recognize outstanding first authors with top abstracts, providing additional honors. This initiative encourages innovative research in cancer management, emphasizing the importance of addressing pain and symptoms in patient care.

The Bradley Stuart Beller Endowed Merit Award offers $2,000 to the top-ranking First Author of an abstract submitted to the ASCO Meeting. Recipients gain the opportunity to present their work, receive complimentary registration, and access reserved hotel blocks. Eligibility includes being the First Author, enrolled in a relevant training program, and providing a letter of confirmation from a program director. Special Merit Awards are also available for outstanding abstracts.

The Marion B. Sewer Distinguished Scholarship for Undergraduates provides $2,000 to support students pursuing biochemistry and molecular biology, especially those from diverse backgrounds. Eligible applicants must be U.S. citizens or residents, enrolled full-time in accredited institutions, and members of ASBMB. This scholarship aims to enhance diversity in the biomedical workforce and encourage ongoing engagement in scientific activities. Applications are open to all qualified candidates, with a focus on underrepresented groups.

The Klamath Basin Forests and Watersheds Restoration RFP aims to enhance critical fish habitats in the Klamath River Basin following the historic removal of four dams. With up to $11,553,000 in funding from the National Fish and Wildlife Foundation, this initiative seeks to restore populations of native fish species and improve habitat conditions. The program will support various conservation projects, ensuring the ecological integrity of this vital ecosystem is preserved for future generations.
