Hearts for Hanah Scholarship Fund

The Hearts for Hanah Scholarship Fund was originally established to celebrate the life of Hanah Rae Friel, who underwent an intensive cancer treatment program including chemotherapy, radiation, blood transfusions, tumor resections, and stem-cell transplants. After thirty-seven days in the hospital and two years of battling Stage IV neuroblastoma, a rare childhood cancer, Hanah was declared cancer free.

Today, Hanah continues to pursue an education toward a bachelor’s degree in social work, hoping to work with either foster kids or pediatric oncology patients as a Child Life Specialist. The Hearts for Hanah scholarship fund provide scholarships for students who have the same desire to give back to their community and help young children, just as Hanah dreams.

Goldsmith Family Endowment Fund

The Goldsmith Family Endowment Fund provides scholarships to students who are graduates of East Aurora High School or West Aurora High School.

This fund, which was created in 2001, became an endowment in 2012.

The Goldsmith family has lived in Aurora for more than 100 years.

Zalmon Goldsmith, a long-time Aurora attorney, and Anne Goldsmith, his wife, were involved in numerous community activities throughout their lives.

Mr. Goldsmith served as a member and chairman of the board of Mercy Hospital and of the Heartland Blood Centers. He was also on the board of Sunnymere.

Mrs. Goldsmith was one of the founders of the Paramount Arts Centre Endowment and also served on the boards of the United Way and the Community Foundation of the Fox River Valley, among others.

Mr. and Mrs. Goldsmith’s son Bruce has practiced law in Aurora for more than thirty years. Bruce’s wife Margot, a freelance editor, has served on the Aurora Public Library Board of Directors.

George & Elaine Hettrich Scholarship Endowment Fund

Scholarships from this fund are awarded to students graduating from high schools located in Oswego School District 308.

These scholarships support students pursuing a bachelor’s degree in nursing and also students studying in a field of their own choosing.

George Hettrich was a lifetime resident and farmer in Oswego Township. After graduating from Oswego High School, he attended Northwestern University and the Chicago Board of Trade Grain and Marketing Program. Mr. Hettrich was elected and served in several Oswego Township and Kendall County offices. He passed away on December 29, 2022.

Elaine Hettrich is a graduate of Oswego High School. She received her R.N. from Copley Hospital School of Nursing and a bachelor of arts degree from Aurora University. She was employed by Copley Hospital and later served twenty-five years as a nurse for the Oswego School District until her retirement in 1994. Mrs. Hettrich is a member of several professional organizations and P.E.O. Chapter BT in Aurora.

Gary and Mary Hauge Scholarship Fund

Gary and Mary grew up in families of modest means, where value and affordability were important considerations. Their own educational paths began at Joliet Junior College before they went on to graduate from Northern Illinois University, and the strong foundation they received there played an important role in their careers.

To extend similar opportunities to others, Gary and Mary established this fund to support first-generation students in the area who are attending Waubonsee Community College.

The Special Needs Grant, provided by Coast Guard Mutual Assistance (CGMA), offers financial support to Active Duty members facing increased financial demands due to dependents in the Coast Guard Special Needs Program. Eligible members can receive up to $3,000 every 60 months for various services and resources tailored for special needs, including adaptive equipment and membership fees for relevant organizations. This grant aims to enhance the quality of life for families with exceptional needs.

Erin K. Harrison Memorial Scholarship Fund

The Erin K. Harrison Memorial Scholarship Fund provides annual awards to Aurora residents who are graduating from East Aurora or West Aurora High School or to students who are GED graduates.

These scholarships are reserved for students pursuing a career in the field of counseling, education, nursing, psychology, or social work.

Erin Harrison (1985-2004) was born in Park Ridge, Illinois. She grew up in Aurora, Illinois and attended Hall Elementary School, Jefferson Middle School and West Aurora High School.

At the time of her passing, Erin was a senior at West High where she played the clarinet in the school’s various bands. She also worked at the SciTech Museum and was active in the youth group at New England Congregational Church.

Always adventurous and charming, Erin possessed a rare and special gift in relating to children. She had planned to further her talents by pursuing a degree in elementary education at Northern Illinois University.

This fund was created by a local citizen to support scholarships for young men who have earned the rank of Eagle Scout from the Boy Scouts of America.

Eligible students must have attended a high school in the Foundation’s service area.

This scholarship was established to honor those who have achieved the Eagle Scout Award and to encourage the progress of younger students aspiring to earn this prestigious scouting award.

The Creative Economy Fund offers vital support to digital creators and entertainment professionals affected by the LA Wildfires. Catering to individuals in film, music, and performing arts, this fund provides assistance for those who have experienced home loss or damage. Eligible applicants include direct creators, employees of talent agencies, and other creative professionals, ensuring a broad reach within the entertainment community. With a focus on personalized resources and guidance, the fund aims to foster resilience in a challenging industry.

Dickes Family Scholarship Permanent Endowment Fund

This fund was established upon receipt of a bequest from the estate of Herman A. Dickes.

Mr. Dickes (1905-2000) was born in Aurora and graduated from East Aurora High School.

Prior to his retirement, he had been employed by the Burlington Railroad.

His wife May Dickes (1907-1989) was born in Chicago. She was an enthusiastic volunteer for numerous community projects and served as the first chairperson of the Mercy Ball.

Mr. and Mrs. Dickes were involved in many youth activities and charitable organizations in Aurora.

Holy Angels Catholic Church, Mercy Center, Knights of Columbus, Boy Scouts, Girl Scouts and the Elks Club were a few of the many special places which felt their love.

In keeping with their belief in the importance and accessibility of education for all youth, the couple established an endowed scholarship for students with financial need who are graduating from a high school located within the City of Aurora or from Marmion Academy.

Colonel Sidney Ginsberg Scholarship Endowment Fund

This fund was established upon receipt of a bequest from the estate of Colonel Sidney Ginsberg.

The fund supports scholarships for students graduating from East Aurora or West Aurora High School for attendance at a state-supported college or university located in Illinois.

Colonel Ginsberg (1899-1951) served in the United States Army following his graduation from West Point Academy.

After World War II, he returned to Aurora to manage the Ginsberg Store which was founded by his father Isaac Ginsberg.

In his bequest, Colonel Ginsberg included the following words. “The citizens of Aurora have been extremely good to me and to my business operations. The monies spent in my store (Ginsberg Store) by such citizens enable me to establish a trust and I hope by this method to repay them in some small manner.”

Colonel Ginsberg’s bequest was the first to be received by the Foundation. Created in 1953, Mr. Ginsberg’s fund was established as an endowment in 1989.

Carl E. & Marilyn J. Hess Memorial Scholarship Endowment Fund

The Carl E. & Marilyn J. Hess Memorial Scholarship Endowment Fund provides scholarships to graduates of Aurora Central, Marmion Academy, and Rosary High School. Carl Hess (1927-2014) was born in Aurora. He was a graduate of St. Nicholas Grade School and Marmion Military Academy. Mr. Hess served in the United States Navy at the end of World War II and during the Korean War. After retiring from the plastering trade, he enjoyed refinishing furniture. In addition, Mr. Hess played softball in Aurora for many years. Marilyn Hess (1930-2020) also was born in Aurora. She was a graduate of Sacred Heart Grade School and East Aurora High School. Mrs. Hess was a homemaker and an artist. Mr. and Mrs. Hess were married for sixty-one years.

Brian Farnham Memorial Scholarship Endowment Fund

This fund, created in 1995 to honor the life of Brian Farnham, was established as an endowment in 2005.

Brian Farnham (1977-1993) attended Our Lady of Good Counsel School until the eighth grade.

He participated in Cub Scouts at the school and was an avid basketball and football player.

He then attended Newark High School and represented the school at a downstate academic contest as a member of the JET’s Team.

He was named an All-American Scholar and was admitted into membership in the Who’s Who of American High School Scholars.

Brian died on June 5, 1993 in an automobile accident.

This fund provides scholarships to students entering “people-oriented” vocations such as the social sciences, health science, medicine, engineering, music and theology.

The Guy Marshall Scholarship Fund, established in 2008 by the advisors of the Cecil G. Marshall Fund, aims to support students from Hawaii pursuing their undergraduate education in the continental U.S. This scholarship emphasizes financial need and requires a minimum GPA of 3.0. Eligible applicants must be high school seniors or entering freshmen from Hawaii and intend to maintain support throughout their four years of study.

The Green Space Grant Program in Rhode Island offers matching funds for the acquisition and development of outdoor recreational lands and facilities. It is available to municipal agencies and recognized Native American tribes, providing up to 50% matching funds, capped at $400,000. The George & Augusta Rapozo Kama'aina Scholarship Fund, established by Wayne J. Rapozo in 2008, supports students from Kauai and Niihau who maintain a minimum GPA of 2.0. Eligible applicants must demonstrate financial need and have strong community ties. Preference is given to previous recipients who continue to meet these criteria. This scholarship fosters educational opportunities for local youth, ensuring they can pursue their academic and vocational goals.

The Christina Chiu AAPI Writers Fellowship, established in 2022 by the Virginia Center for the Creative Arts (VCCA), aims to support AAPI writers by providing a free two-week residency at Mt. San Angelo. This residency includes a private bedroom, studio space, and meals in a diverse community of artists. VCCA encourages applications from emerging and established writers across various disciplines, fostering creativity and collaboration within the arts.

The Clifford D. Blankenship Memorial Scholarship provides financial support to Montana high school graduates pursuing a degree in Civil Engineering at Montana State University. This scholarship aims to encourage students with a minimum cumulative GPA of 2.5, facilitating their access to higher education. The program underscores MSU's commitment to transforming lives through education and fostering the next generation of engineers. Limited scholarships are available for incoming students, reflecting the university's dedication to academic excellence.

The Clyde and Helen Erskine Fund for Excellence in Agriculture Scholarship at Montana State University offers support to students pursuing degrees in Land Resources and Environmental Sciences or Plant Sciences and Plant Pathology. • Graduating high school senior from any Palm Beach County high school, must be a Palm Beach county resident
• For use at a two or four year college or university
• Demonstrate financial need
• Must have maintained a C average or better while in high school

About the Fund

The Palm Beach County Estate Planning Council is a multi-disciplined organization that supports the team concept of estate planning. We admit membership attorneys, trust officers, accountants, insurance, wealth and financial planners and planned giving professionals, as well as allied professionals.

Annual Scholarship Available

Each year the Palm Beach County Estate Planning Council awards a total of $10,000 in $2,500 scholarships each to Four (4) deserving students from Palm Beach County.

Mickey Mandelblatt Memorial Scholarship Fund

About the Fund

Mickey Mandelblatt lived a life defined by compassion, achievement and an unwavering commitment to helping others. Born March 16, 1946, in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, Mickey grew up in a close-knit family with his two sisters, Carole and Nancy. After graduating from Germantown High School in 1963, he attended Penn State University, earning a bachelor’s degree in accounting before launching a successful career.

Mickey began his professional journey at Price Waterhouse, where he rose to the position of senior manager and earned his CPA certification. In 1978, he joined Pantry Pride, one of the nation’s largest supermarket chains, and was soon asked to relocate to Fort Lauderdale to help lead the company’s turnaround. His leadership was instrumental in Pantry Pride’s historic emergence from Chapter 11 bankruptcy, and he was named chief financial officer in 1983. Following the sale of Pantry Pride in 1986, Mickey pursued a career in money management.

While his professional accomplishments were impressive, Mickey’s true passion was his family and community. Married for 26 years to his wife, Charlotte, he was a devoted father to their three children: Eric, Ali and Kasey. Friends and family remember him as a man whose mission was to enrich the lives of those around him — a mission he fulfilled with unmatched generosity and heart.

To honor Mickey’s legacy and continue his work, his family established the Mickey Mandelblatt Scholarship Fund at the Community Foundation for Palm Beach and Martin Counties.
