Child Care Assistance Program (CCAP)

Child care can take up a big part of a family’s monthly budget. Income-eligible families who are working, going to school or in job training may be able to get help through the New Jersey Child Care Assistance Program (CCAP), which is run by the New Jersey Department of Human Services (DHS), Division of Family Development (DFD).

Assistance for Homeless Families

Experiencing homelessness and needing child care services is a challenge. We make it easier for you to receive help paying for child care even if you don’t have all of the required documents. If you lack a fixed and adequate nighttime residence, you would meet the definition of homeless.

Specifically that means living in:

• Shared housing due to loss of housing, economic hardship, or a similar reason;
• Motels, hotels, or campgrounds because you don’t have alternative accommodations;
• Emergency or transitional shelters;
• Locations not designed or intended for human sleeping, such as park benches; or
• Cars, parks, public spaces, bus or train stations, or abandoned buildings.

HOME-ARP Program Fact Sheet: Rental Housing

Overview:

A PJ may use HOME-ARP funds to acquire, construct and rehabilitate rental housing for occupancy by individuals and families that meet one of the Qualifying Populations defined in CPD Notice: Requirements for the Use of Funds in the HOME-American Rescue Plan Program (“the Notice”). HOME-ARP rental housing may include single family or multifamily housing, transitional or permanent housing, group homes, single room occupancy (SRO) units, and manufactured housing.

To promote the development of financially viable housing, PJs may pay the entire amount of eligible costs associated with HOME-ARP rental units, are encouraged to work with local PHAs and state or local agencies to obtain project-based rental assistance and may provide ongoing operating cost assistance or capitalize a project operating cost assistance reserve to address operating deficits of HOME-ARP units occupied by qualifying households. To promote inclusion of HOME-ARP units in mixed-income housing, up to 30 percent of the units a PJ funds with its HOME-ARP grant may be restricted for occupancy by households that are low-income.

Organizations eligible for grants must be 501(c)(3) compliant and serve specific communities in New Jersey and New York.

The George A. Ohl, Jr. Trust Grant supports nonprofit organizations in New Jersey that focus on community welfare. Established by George A. Ohl, Jr. through a testamentary bequest, the foundation aims to enhance the well-being of state residents. Grants typically range from $2,000 to $20,000, with around 25 grants awarded annually. The foundation prioritizes programs that assist the poor, improve living conditions, and provide care for vulnerable populations.

The FJ Brotherton Charitable Trust Grant aims to support charitable organizations, focusing on arts, education, and social services primarily in the northeastern United States. Established in 2024, the Trust continues the legacy of the Fred J. Brotherton Charitable Foundation. Their funding is directed towards impactful programs that align with their mission, while avoiding causes that do not meet their criteria for economic mobility.

The Fair Housing Initiatives Program (FHIP), established by Congress in 1988, aims to fund organizations to combat discriminatory housing practices. The Education and Outreach Initiative (EOI) educates stakeholders about their rights under fair housing laws. Key components include the National Media Campaign, which promotes fair housing awareness nationally, and local programs that support community-based outreach. HUD oversees the process, ensuring compliance and monitoring of funded initiatives to enhance fair housing practices.

The Amboy Foundation Grant provides funding to tax-exempt organizations under Section 501(c)(3) of the Internal Revenue Code.
