Patient Travel Grant Program

A mesothelioma diagnosis and treatment often require the patient and their family to incur numerous expenses as part of their treatment. Travel to treatment, alone, can cause a significant financial burden on the patient, which might even cause the patient to not seek treatment away from home, even it’s their best option. To ensure that all patients have the ability to seek specialized help and treatments, the Mesothelioma Applied Research Foundation administers its Travel Grant Program.

The Meso Foundation’s Patient Travel Grant Program, founded by Mary and Bob Cosentino, provides travel grants to patients and one caregiver traveling for an initial consult and/or for clinical trial treatments.

• The type of eligible travel must fall into at least one of these two categories:
  • One trip for one initial consultation with a mesothelioma specialist.
  • Multiple trips to participate in an interventional clinical trial (found on clinicaltrials.gov).

Bret A. Rosenthal Patient Assistance Fund

Patients diagnosed with cancer at a younger age often face greater financial burdens. This is a time in a patient’s life when they are raising a family, starting a career, or have not accumulated savings. For patients 49 and under, the Foundation administers the Bret A. Rosenthal Patient Assistance Fund grant program. This program is made possible by the generosity of the Rosenthal family.

Maternal Health Grant Program

Florida Blue Foundation is funding approximately $3 million for this grant program, offering four year grants. The total funding request for the grant period should fall within the range of $300,000 to $400,000, with an approximate annual allocation of $75,000 to $100,000.

The NIH Director's Transformative Research Award encourages innovative research that challenges conventional ideas. This award supports bold scientists and teams aiming to create groundbreaking technologies and new clinical approaches, ultimately transforming scientific paradigms. As part of the NIH Common Fund's High-Risk, High-Reward Research Program, it seeks to fund high-impact projects that have the potential to significantly advance science and technology.

The Emergency Department Alternatives to Opioids Program aims to implement practices that offer alternatives to opioid treatments in hospitals. This initiative focuses on reducing the harmful consequences of opioid use for pain management, promoting safer treatment options, and minimizing the risk of opioid misuse and overdose. Specifically, it targets healthcare organizations to enhance their pain care strategies, ultimately contributing to better patient safety and health outcomes.

The GLS Campus Suicide Prevention program aims to enhance behavioral health services for college students, addressing critical issues such as suicide, depression, and substance use disorders. By fostering a culture of help-seeking and reducing stigma, this initiative ensures that at-risk students receive timely intervention and support. The program represents a vital investment in the mental well-being of students, promoting a healthier campus environment through evidence-based strategies and comprehensive public health approaches.

The State Pilot Program for Treatment for Pregnant and Postpartum Women aims to enhance the state's capacity to deliver integrated and evidence-based services for substance use disorders and maternal mental health. The initiative focuses on supporting pregnant and postpartum women and their families, ensuring they receive comprehensive care tailored to their unique needs. Funded by the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration, this program is a vital step toward improving health outcomes for vulnerable populations.

The Assisted Outpatient Treatment (AOT) program aims to support adults with serious mental illness (SMI) by facilitating community-based treatment. Funded by the US HHS's Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA), the initiative encourages collaboration with civil courts and community partners. Recipients will implement AOT to ensure that eligible individuals receive necessary support, thereby enhancing their mental health outcomes and promoting recovery.

The Building Communities of Recovery program aims to enhance access to long-term recovery support for individuals facing substance use disorders and co-occurring mental health issues. By empowering organizations to mobilize community resources, this initiative fosters a collaborative environment that promotes sustained recovery. Funded by the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration, the program emphasizes the importance of community connections in the recovery process, ensuring that individuals receive the support they need to thrive.

The Diversity Leadership Fellowship identifies and motivates minority psychiatry residents or those interested in minority and vulnerable populations to become well equipped to teach, administer, and provide culturally competent, evidence based mental health and substance abuse services to diverse minority groups and at-risk populations. These populations include—but are not limited to—American Indians/Native Alaskans, Asian Americans/Native Hawaiians/Native Pacific Islanders, Blacks/African Americans, Hispanics/Latinos, LGBTQ, and religious minorities. Alkermes seeks to support research designed and conducted by independent clinicians and scientists through our Investigator Sponsored Studies (ISS) program. Alkermes may occasionally announce a Request for Proposals (RFP) for research in clinical areas where gaps in data have been identified. 

The ISS research Alkermes supports must be based in the United States and is typically conducted by experienced researchers who have an established history of successfully completing research with independent funding. Alkermes can provide its marketed products to the ISS programs it supports. In addition, there may be financial support available, but please note that study budgets cannot exceed $300,000 (inclusive of overhead).

The proposed project, "Aquatic Fauna and Primary Production in the Florida Everglades," aims to enhance the understanding of aquatic ecosystems within the Everglades through long-term monitoring of aquatic fauna and periphyton. This research is pivotal for assessing the effectiveness of the Comprehensive Everglades Restoration Plan (CERP) and will support adaptive management strategies to improve ecological health. By focusing on the relationships between hydrology and trophic dynamics, the project seeks to inform restoration efforts that will benefit both wildlife and habitat quality.

The project investigates wading bird responses to the Comprehensive Everglades Restoration Plan (CERP) in Southwest Florida. By monitoring these ecological indicators, the study aims to evaluate the effectiveness of restoration efforts, which are crucial for enhancing wetland habitats. The findings will inform future conservation strategies and contribute to successful project planning, benefiting both the environment and public knowledge of ecosystem restoration progress.

The project titled 'American Alligators as Ecological Indicators of Everglades Restoration' focuses on the role of alligators in assessing the health of the Everglades ecosystem. As top predators and ecosystem engineers, alligators influence habitat diversity and productivity, responding to changes in freshwater flow. This initiative aligns with the Comprehensive Everglades Restoration Plan, utilizing alligator monitoring to measure ecological responses and guide restoration efforts, ultimately contributing to the preservation of this vital ecosystem.

This project involves conducting Aerial Electromagnetic (AEM) surveys in Everglades National Park to assess groundwater and surface water salinity changes due to saltwater intrusion. Collaborating with the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, the study integrates data from the past 30 years to evaluate the impact on critical habitats and predict future trends in freshwater-saltwater interfaces, ultimately informing restoration efforts for the affected wetland ecosystem.

This project aims to assess the community and habitat suitability of juvenile sportfish in Florida Bay, a crucial area for both ecological balance and recreational fishing. It builds on prior monitoring efforts under the Comprehensive Everglades Restoration Plan, focusing particularly on spotted seatrout, a key species that indicates ecosystem health. The outcomes will enhance understanding of habitat needs and contribute to the management of South Florida's vital fishery resources.

The Alkermes Pathways Advanced Practice Nurse (APN) Research Awards™ program is designed to empower the advanced practice nursing community by offering funding opportunities that recognize their vital role in evidence-based care and the advancement of mental health research.

The Alkermes Pathways APN Research Awards provide opportunities for individual grants of up to $10,000 per project for licensed psychiatric-mental health nurse practitioners who are actively engaged in clinical, academic, and/or community health settings and are committed to advancing research in schizophrenia or bipolar I disorder.

Mary Kay Ash Foundation: Cancer Research Grant

The Mary Kay Ash Foundation is a non-profit public foundation, which focuses on funding research for innovative grants for translational research of cancers affecting women (ovarian, uterine, breast, endometrial or cervical cancer among others). Translational research is broadly defined as research that will provide a scientific link between laboratory research and the clinic. Ultimately, such research would lead to improvement in diagnosis, prognosis, prevention, or treatment of the cancer. Each year the Foundation extends invitations to NCI designated cancer institutes and accredited medical schools to apply. Only one application is accepted per institution.

Grant proposals are reviewed by a Scientific Research Review Committee comprised of notable members of the American medical and scientific community. Grants are awarded up to $100,000 (combined direct and indirect costs) for a two-year period. The Foundation anticipates funding between 10 and 15 grants annually. 

The Early Head Start Expansion and Child Care Partnership Grants aim to enhance early childhood services for low-income families across GA, NC, and VA. With approximately $7.7 million in federal funding, this initiative will provide comprehensive support to pregnant women, infants, and toddlers, fostering family stability and community prosperity. The initiative was established by honorary Hertz Fellow Harold Newman, a former member of our board of directors and a long-time supporter of and generous donor to the foundation. Newman changed the name to the Harold Newman and David Galas Entrepreneurial Initiative in honor of David Galas, a Hertz Fellow and chairman of the board. Through Newman’s substantial endowment, this award has helped enterprising fellows co-found 11 companies and develop new technologies with real-world impact.

The funds are provided with no strings attached, only the expectation that project leaders will be motivated to share their success with the foundation.
