Scholarship Program

Thanks to our generous partners, there are thirty $10,000 merit-based scholarships currently available. All scholarships are awarded on the basis of academic excellence, community service, and leadership. The finalists are announced every spring. They then attend our national convention in July when the winners of each individual scholarship are selected. 

Jesse and Hertha Adams Charitable Trust Scholarship

The Jesse and Hertha Adams Trust Scholarship is made available for those individuals who wish to achieve their dreams. Success is acknowledged through hard work and the effort you put forth. And the Jesse and Hertha Adams Scholarship acknowledges both. In addition to funding this named scholarship, the trust generously contributes to our program travel expenditures for our winners and many of our National Federation of the Blind other scholarships.

Howard Brown Rickard Scholarship

The Howard Brown Rickard Scholarship, first granted in 1965, is awarded to post-secondary full time students studying law, medicine, engineering, architecture, or the natural sciences.

Kurzweil Foundation and Ray Kurzweil

The Kurzweil Foundation and Ray Kurzweil contribute to each recipient’s award, and provide each finalist with a commemorative plaque in both print and Braille. Ray Kurzweil is a long-time friend of the Federation and deserves our special recognition.

The Academic Career Excellence (ACE) Award (K32) supports early-stage postdoctoral scholars through rigorous research and career development over three years. Applicants must submit their proposals up to a year before or two years after starting their postdoctoral positions. This award emphasizes innovative research ideas and strategic planning for training and mentorship, aiming to cultivate independent investigators in research fields aligned with the missions of NIH Institutes and Centers.

The NIDCD Research Fellowship for Audiologists provides clinical audiologists enrolled in Ph.D. programs with essential research training. This initiative encourages the integration of clinical and translational research, fostering strong research foundations vital for advancing audiology and hearing healthcare. Although applications are not currently being solicited, the program aims to prepare potential candidates for meaningful collaborations and impactful research projects in the biomedical, behavioral, or clinical sciences.

NFB STEM Scholarship

The NFB STEM Scholarship is jointly supported by the Science and Engineering and Computer Science divisions, and it is awarded to a student studying in science, technology, engineering, mathematics or a related field. Members of these divisions wish to encourage the success of blind STEM students in their chosen field of study.

The American Action Fund for Blind Children and Adults Scholarship

For more than 100 years the American Action Fund for Blind Children and Adults has strived to improve the lives of blind and Deafblind children and adults. Best known for annually producing and gifting Braille Calendars, sponsoring the free Braille books for blind children program, and administering the Braille Readers are Leaders contest, the American Action Fund leads in promoting Braille literacy. The American Action Fund is proud to award this scholarship to a deserving and talented blind person. 

Puerto Rico higher education students in STEM who are Indigenous or descendants of Indigenous peoples can access funding through the American Indian Science and Engineering Society’s Indigenous Peoples Education Fund Scholarship. Awards of US $5,000 support rising college freshmen pursuing full-time STEM degrees, with eligibility extending to members or descendants of recognized tribes, Native Hawaiian, Pacific Islander, or Indigenous peoples of Canada.

Indigenous undergraduate and graduate students in STEM fields, including those studying in Puerto Rico, can apply for the AISES Indian Motorcycle Academic Scholarship, awarding US $5,000 per academic year for higher education costs. Funded by Indian Motorcycle and the Polaris Foundation, this program supports AISES student members pursuing mechanical engineering, IT, manufacturing, supply chain, and related STEM disciplines.

The Bear Paw Resort Scholarship, offered by the Community Foundation for the Fox Valley Region, supports graduating seniors from White Lake High School who plan to pursue post-secondary education. With over $2 million available for scholarships in 2025, this initiative aims to empower students in their educational journeys. The scholarship is designed to assist with tuition costs, payable after the completion of the first semester, thereby encouraging academic success and community development.

Military service members, veterans, and eligible military dependents pursuing geoscience undergraduate degrees at higher education institutions in Puerto Rico can receive US $5,000 - US $10,000 scholarships for tuition, fees, books, and living expenses. With a mission to support veterans’ education, American Association of Petroleum Geologists Foundation provides this aid across U.S. states and territories, including Puerto Rico.

Puerto Rico higher-education engineering students preparing for HVAC or refrigeration careers can access funding through the ASHRAE President’s Scholarship, offering up to US $12,500 for undergraduate study. Eligible applicants must be full-time ASHRAE student members in accredited Bachelor of Science engineering programs with at least 45 credits completed and two years remaining.

Undergraduate mechanical or architectural engineering students at eligible universities, including those in Puerto Rico, can receive up to US $5,000 for one year of study through the David C. J. Peters Scholarship. With a mission to advance HVACR and built-environment sciences, ASHRAE supports higher education pathways in these technical fields.

Full-time undergraduate engineering technology students in HVAC&R-related programs in Puerto Rico can receive up to US $5,000 for one-year scholarships. American Society of Heating Refrigerating & A C Engineers supports students at institutions with an ASHRAE student branch or accredited by ABET, PAHRA, or a Sydney Accord signatory, with a minimum 3.0 GPA or top 30% class standing.

Undergraduate engineering technology students preparing for HVAC&R careers in Puerto Rico can receive up to US $10,000 for one year of study through the Gordon V. R. Holness Engineering Technology Scholarship. American Society of Heating Refrigerating & A C Engineers supports higher education at ABET/PAHRA-accredited or equivalent programs, or institutions with active ASHRAE student branches.

Puerto Rico higher-education engineering technology students, especially women preparing for HVAC&R careers, can access funding for tuition and related study costs through the American Society of Heating Refrigerating & A C Engineers’ Lynn G. Bellenger Engineering Technology Scholarship, offering up to US $5,000. Eligible applicants must be full-time undergraduates meeting GPA and program accreditation criteria.

The Elks National Foundation's Legacy Awards provide $4,000 scholarships for children and grandchildren of Elks members. Eligible applicants must be high school seniors and can apply online. The program supports educational pursuits at accredited U.S. institutions, ensuring that the legacy of community service and support continues. With criteria focusing on family connections to the Elks and a commitment to education, these awards promote opportunities for future generations to thrive and contribute to society.

College undergraduates pursuing higher education in Puerto Rico and other eligible U.S. locations can receive scholarship support for tuition and related study costs. Scholarship America supports higher education in Puerto Rico by awarding up to US $10,000 through its Dream Award to financially needy, high-achieving students working toward their first associate or bachelor’s degree.

The BURGER KING Scholars: Employee-Based Track provides scholarships for employees and their families pursuing undergraduate, graduate, or enrichment programs at accredited institutions. With nearly $64 million awarded to over 55,000 students, this initiative aims to support academic success and empower individuals through education. Eligible applicants include employees, spouses, partners, and dependent children, with awards of up to $1,000 based on financial need and academic performance. This program reflects the Burger King Foundation's commitment to education and community support.

The Impact100 Global Veterans Awards empower women to make a significant difference by awarding grants up to $100,000 to nonprofits that serve veterans. Focus areas include art and culture, education, health and wellness, environment, and family initiatives, promoting the well-being and support of veterans across the United States. Eligible organizations must meet specific criteria, including tax-exempt status, and are encouraged to submit proposals that utilize funds effectively within two years.

The 2025 Vilcek Foundation Grants aim to support nonprofit organizations that celebrate immigrant contributions to the arts and sciences. The foundation invites applications from organizations operating under U.S. IRS Section 501(c)(3) that promote diversity and inclusivity. Grants will be prioritized for new partners and those in states without prior funding. This initiative underscores the foundation's commitment to fostering appreciation for immigrant communities and their impact on society.

The Adrienne Asch Memorial Scholarship, offered by the National Federation of the Blind, provides thirty $10,000 merit-based scholarships to legally blind students in the U.S. Selection criteria include academic excellence, community service, and leadership. Finalists attend the national convention in July, where winners are announced. This scholarship emphasizes the belief in the potential of blind individuals to achieve their dreams and contribute to society, making education accessible to all qualified candidates.

Handid Braille Scholarship

This scholarship is awarded to an individual studying social science, international relations, or governmental affairs. Handid’s mission is to provide Braille and other forms of accessible media to organizations and individuals. The nonprofit specializes in Braille production in languages other than English, especially languages that do not use the Latin alphabet, and wishes to support a student with unique perspectives.

JAWS for Windows Scholarship

Vispero is proud to once again sponsor the JAWS for Windows scholarship. For over three decades, JAWS, the world’s most widely used screen reader, has helped expand educational and employment opportunities for people who are blind through speech and Braille access. This scholarship reflects Vispero’s continued commitment to innovation in assistive technology and to supporting the next generation of blind and low vision students and future leaders. “We are honored to give back by supporting scholarships that empower blind students to pursue their educational and professional aspirations and help them achieve their goals.” Each scholarship winner will receive a five-year JAWS, ZoomText, or Fusion Access license of their choice.

The Jacquilyn Billey Memorial Scholarship, offered by the National Federation of the Blind, provides thirty merit-based scholarships of $10,000 each to legally blind students pursuing post-secondary education in the U.S. The scholarship emphasizes academic excellence, community service, and leadership. Finalists are selected in spring and must attend the NFB National Convention in July for the award announcement. This initiative empowers blind individuals to pursue their educational and career aspirations, reflecting a commitment to inclusivity and opportunity.

The Kenneth Jernigan Scholarship, offered by the National Federation of the Blind, honors the legacy of Jacquilyn Billey, a dedicated advocate for the blind. With thirty merit-based scholarships of $10,000 each available, applicants must be legally blind, reside in the U.S., and plan to pursue full-time post-secondary education. Awards are based on academic excellence, community service, and leadership, with finalists attending the NFB National Convention in July for selection.
