Scholarship Information

Currently, The Community Foundation administers 75 separate endowed scholarship funds. Established by individuals or organizations, these funds help area students achieve their academic and career-oriented goals.

Scholarships through the Community Foundation support individuals of all ages who reside within the Dan River Region – Danville, VA; Pittsylvania and Halifax counties, VA; and Caswell County, NC. In 2025, we awarded more than $370,000 to 152 students.

Stuart Harris Drama Scholarship

Open applications for graduates of Danville Public Schools and Pittsylvania County Public Schools who are outstanding drama students.

The Lilja Family Fund offers scholarships to graduates from specific public and private high schools in South Douglas County, Oregon. Applications are managed by the Office of Student Access and Completion (OSAC), with a general deadline of March 1 and an early-bird deadline of February 15 each year. This funding opportunity aims to support local students in their pursuit of higher education.

Sadie Banks Brown Memorial Scholarship

Open applications for African American students from Danville and Pittsylvania County, with a preference for students attending historically black colleges and universities.

The Murdock College Research Program supports innovative natural sciences research at private undergraduate colleges in the Pacific Northwest. It emphasizes faculty-student collaboration, enhancing educational methods through inquiry-based teaching. Proposals are assessed on scientific merit and the investigator's qualifications, with a focus on projects that significantly contribute to fundamental knowledge in the field. This program encourages active participation from undergraduate students as research associates, fostering their development and engagement in scientific inquiry.

The Office of Legal Immigration Grant Program (ND) aims to support businesses and community organizations in North Dakota that seek to recruit, retain, and integrate New Americans. Funded by the North Dakota Department of Commerce, it addresses the need for improved access to international recruitment and community integration activities, enhancing the workforce and economic inclusion for foreign-born individuals. This program facilitates employer strategies and community-based initiatives, promoting long-term retention and positive experiences for immigrants.

Roy L. and Mary G. Doss Scholarship

Open applications for graduates of Danville or Pittsylvania County. 

The Dr. Carolyn Baum Cognitive Function in Daily Life Mentor Award, funded by the American Occupational Therapy Foundation, supports mid-to senior-level occupational therapy researchers mentoring assistant professors or post-doctoral fellows. This $10,000 stipend aims to enhance understanding of cognition's role in daily life through research. Dr. Carolyn Baum, a pioneer in the field, inspires this initiative, promoting the advancement of functional cognition in occupational therapy.

The Foundation also hosts a Youth Engagement in Philanthropy (YEP) program, which helps high school students learn more about philanthropy and empowers them to make a difference in the community.

Swami Vivekananda Scholarship Fund

This fund was created by the City of Aurora’s Indian American Community Outreach Advisory Board (IACOAB).

IACOAB’s mission is to embrace, preserve and promote the heritage and contributions of Indian American’s while promoting civic engagement and encouraging Indian Americans to increase their involvement in Aurora’s growth.

The IACOAB created the Swami Vivekananda Scholarship Fund to support college-bound high school seniors to further their education in a field of their choice. Applicants must have demonstrated exemplary community service.

William “Skip” Rowe Scholarship Fund

William “Skip” Rowe was a father and husband who spent his entire life taking care of his family, friends and the many young people in the community. Skip was able to make friends with people from all backgrounds, and he was known to be a father-figure and mentor to many young men that just needed a trusted adult to help keep them on the right path. This fund was created to honor his memory and will help to provide support to a male student going into the field of education. This scholarship was made possible by the many friends and family that loved Skip and continue to benefit from his endless generosity, passion and love.

The Charles Albert Shull Award, established by the American Society of Plant Biologists in 1971, honors outstanding investigations in plant biology by early-career researchers. Eligible candidates must be ASPB members under 45 years old or within ten years of their doctoral degree. This award recognizes significant contributions to the field, promoting the growth and education of plant scientists. Recipients will present their work at the annual meeting, fostering community engagement and knowledge sharing.

Winteringham Family Permanent Endowment Fund

The Winteringham Family Permanent Endowment Fund was established through a generous bequest received from the estate of Marian Winteringham

Marian (1901-1994) taught in the West Aurora School System for over forty years. For the first half of her career, she taught at Abraham Lincoln and Nancy Hill Elementary Schools. In the early 1940s, she joined the faculty of West Aurora High School, where she taught English and also served as Dean of Women for many years.

This fund was created by Marian as a memorial to her parents Arthur J. and Minnie Winteringham, her sister Claire Winteringham, and her brother and sister-in-law Sidney and Frederika Winteringham. Although her bequest was unrestricted, Marian requested that at least a portion of her gift be used to provide scholarships for students entering the field of teaching. 

The Mary Clutter Leadership in Science Public Service Award, established by the American Society of Plant Biologists (ASPB), honors individuals who significantly contribute to plant science and public policy leadership. Renamed in 2019, this award recognizes efforts that advance ASPB's mission, encouraging diverse contributions to the field. Recipients, who may not be plant scientists themselves, are invited to address the Society at its annual meeting, highlighting their achievements and the importance of their work in the broader scientific community.

The ASPB Excellence in Education Award, established in 1988, honors exceptional teaching and mentoring in plant biology. It recognizes individuals, regardless of society membership, who demonstrate outstanding contributions in education, curricular development, or creation of effective teaching resources. This monetary award emphasizes the importance of quality education in advancing plant science, reflecting the mission of the American Society of Plant Biologists to promote growth and development in the field.

Illinois Works Pre-Apprenticeship Program

The goal of the Illinois Works Pre-apprenticeship Program is to provide grants to community-based organizations or coalitions throughout the State that will recruit, prescreen, and provide pre-apprenticeship skills training. Successful grantees will also be expected to provide pathways and manage the transition from the pre-apprenticeship program to a full apprenticeship program in construction and building trades.

The AFSA 2nd Chance College Scholarship Contest, sponsored by the American Fire Sprinkler Association, aims to support educational pursuits for students with a high school diploma or GED. Open to U.S. citizens and legal residents, the contest encourages applicants to enroll in a college or trade school for the Spring 2019 session. Notably, selection is not based on financial need or GPA, ensuring a fair opportunity for all eligible participants.

Northeast SARE

The Northeast Sustainable Agriculture Research and Education (SARE) Program offers competitive grants to farmers, educators, agricultural service providers, researchers, graduate students and others to address key issues affecting the sustainability of agriculture throughout our region. Northeast SARE is one of four regional SARE programs funded by the USDA National Institute of Food and Agriculture. The program—including funding decisions—is driven by the Northeast SARE outcome statement:

Agriculture in the Northeast will be diversified and profitable, providing healthful products to customers. Farmers and the people they work with will steward resources to ensure sustainability and resilience, and foster conditions where farmers have high quality of life and communities can thrive.

Northeast SARE Research and Education Grants

The purpose of the Research and Education grant program is to invest in education for farmers that leads to changes in farmer behavior, decision-making, and/or practices. These changes must increase the sustainability of farming in the Northeast United States. A Research and Education project can also include an applied research component, related to the educational activities.

• The primary audience are farmers, ranchers, and farm employees (henceforth “farmers”) that meet Northeast SARE’s Definition of a Farm.
• Farmers must be engaged in demonstrating the need for and the design of the project.
• Anyone who works in farming, including farmers, can lead a Research and Education project.
• The education program must be useful to farmers regardless of the results of any optional research component.

This grant program seeks innovative projects that improve existing practices or introduce existing practices to new farmer audiences.

The Northeast SARE: Farmer Grant Program supports innovative sustainable agriculture projects by providing funding to farmers. Grants ranging from $5,000 to $30,000 enable farmers to conduct research, implement new ideas, and address issues affecting long-term sustainability. This program encourages proposals that explore diverse topics such as crop production, livestock raising, urban agriculture, and climate-smart practices. Successful projects promise significant benefits to farming communities while fostering collaboration and education within the agricultural sector.

Northeast SARE

Professional Development Grant

The Professional Development Grant program funds projects that help service providers improve the way they work with farmers through research-based education. These projects result in a change in practice or behavior by service providers that supports farmers in sustainable agriculture innovation.

Northeast SARE’s definition of a service provider is a professional who assists farmers as part of their work. Typical audiences include extension educators, consultants, agency personnel, and not-for-profit organization staff. Project audiences may include realtors, bankers, attorneys, or farmers who help other farmers.

The Northeast Sustainable Agriculture Research and Education (SARE) program provides grants for graduate students to research sustainable agriculture under faculty supervision. Proposals should address relevant issues for Northeast farmers and agricultural professionals. Projects should align with themes of stewardship, profitability, and quality of life. The aim is to support diversified and profitable agriculture in the Northeast, enhancing community and environmental well-being through effective resource management.

Zonta Club of Aurora Scholarship Endowment Fund

The Zonta Club of Aurora Scholarship Endowment Fund was established to recognize academically talented female students graduating from a high school located in the City of Aurora.

Eligible students must have earned an overall grade point average of at least a 3.0 on a 4.0 point scale and also must be able to demonstrative positive values in the areas of character and leadership.

Zonta is an international professional business woman’s organization promoting improvement in the status and education of women through community service, study and action. The Aurora Club was established in 1959.

Federal Charter Schools Program (CSP) Grant

The Minnesota Department of Education (MDE) received a grant from the U.S. Department of Education (ED) to increase charter school quality and authorizer accountability. The three objectives identified in MDE’s application to ED are designed to support a landscape of high-quality/high-performing charter schools that all parents from all communities can access by making informed decisions about the best education choices for their children through empowered access to information.

Ethnic Studies 5-12 Courses: Community-Centered Knowledge Competitive Grant

Under Minnesota Statutes 2025, section 120B.251, legislation passed requiring all districts and charters to offer ethnic studies, including offering a high school ethnic studies course and integrated K-8 ethnic studies instruction. The purpose of the grant is to support districts and charters in the development, evaluation, and implementation of new 5-12 ethnic studies courses.

Minnesota School Districts, Charter Schools, Tribally Controlled Schools, Intermediate School Districts, and Cooperative Units are eligible for funding. Fiscal Year 2025 Ethnic Studies grant recipients are not eligible to apply for this round of funding.

All proposed grant projects must align with Minnesota’s definition of ethnic studies as stated in Minnesota Statutes 2025, section 120B.25.

The grant will provide three levels of support:

• Grant requests of up to $50,000 to support inter-district, co-op, or tribal school collaborations to develop new ethnic studies courses, which could include charter schools and their geographic district LEA.
• Grant requests of up to $50,000 to support district-level applicants to develop new ethnic studies courses, including charter and tribal schools which are independent LEAs.
• Grant requests of up to $50,000 to support school-level applicants to develop new ethnic studies courses, which could support individual or teams of educators working with their building administration.

Total amount available: approximately $665,000.00 per fiscal year

Maximum grant request amount: $50,000.00

Andrew (Rudy) Z. Hatfield Memorial Scholarship Fund

Scholarship Eligibility

• Graduating high school senior attending a public or private school in Palm Beach or Martin County high school
• Must have a GPA of 2.0 or better
• Member of high school’s baseball team
• Member of the softball team
• Demonstrate financial need

The Higher Education Challenge Grant Program, administered by the USDA, aims to address critical educational needs at various levels. America’s Heroes Scholarship Fund

About the Fund

In the Summer of 2016, five police officers were brutally executed in Dallas, Texas. Jim McDavid sat in his truck listening to the radio commentary, the commentary hit him like a ton of bricks. In that moment, he made the decision to throw his time and resources behind the men and women in blue. Through in-depth research, he discovered that there were very few charities that support fallen law enforcement families, and the money raised was very small in comparison to other notable charities. The McDavid Group Charities supports the educational goals of children and spouses of fallen law enforcement officers. “The America’s Heroes Scholarship Fund” funds scholarships for fallen officer families nationwide. With plans to make sure no child of a fallen officer never has to worry about the financial burden of higher education. Your family has already paid the ultimate sacrifice.

The Hemophilia Alliance Foundation's Impact Grants aim to support organizations enhancing services for individuals with inherited bleeding disorders. Since its inception in 2009, the foundation has awarded over $6.6 million, enabling innovative projects that expand capacity and collaboration. Eligible applicants include local organizations and federally-funded treatment centers, emphasizing creativity in project proposals. Priority will be given to initiatives that address unserved populations and foster educational advancements in the community.

Richard J. & Marilyn J. Michelini Scholarship Endowment Fund

The Richard J. and Marilyn J. Michelini Scholarship Endowment Fund was created to provide scholarships to students who reside within the incorporated area of the Village of Montgomery.

Richard Michelini (1931-2003) graduated from Colorado State University. He served in the United States Army and was regional sales manager for Ciba-Geigy for thirty-three years.

Marilyn Michelini served as the president of the Village of Montgomery. Previously, she served on the Kane County Board and the Village of Montgomery Board of Trustees.

Mrs. Michelini was a member of the DuKane Valley Council, Kendall County Mayors and Managers Association, Metro West Council of Governments, and Fox Valley United Way.

The Michelini’s have five children: Thomas ’72, Marie Lynn ’73, Mark ’77, Lisa ’80, Tina ’90.

Mrs. Michelini created this scholarship fund in 2005 as a celebration of the wonderful education the Michelini children received in Aurora. One of the proudest accomplishments of Richard and Marilyn was that they were fortunate enough to send five children to college.

The fund became an endowment in 2008.

The Geological Society of Connecticut offers the GSC Student Research Grant to support undergraduate and master’s students conducting geology-related fieldwork in Connecticut. Each year, up to three grants of $500 may be awarded to eligible applicants. Students from any institution can apply, provided they meet the eligibility criteria related to their field of study. This initiative aims to enhance geological research and education while promoting the sustainable use of natural resources in the state.
