Community Foundation of the Fox River Valley

The Community Foundation of the Fox River Valley is a collection of individual funds and resources given by local citizens to enhance and support the quality of life in the Fox River Valley of Illinois.

We are a tax-exempt public charity that allows individuals, businesses, and non-profit organizations to establish permanent endowments and temporary funds within the confines of one large foundation.

Foundation funds are used to provide grants to non-profit organizations and scholarships to area students. The Foundation also hosts a Youth Engagement in Philanthropy (YEP) program, which helps high school students learn more about philanthropy and empowers them to make a difference in the community.

The Community Foundation of the Fox River Valley serves the City of Aurora, Kane County, and Kendall County within the State of Illinois.

John L. & Alice M. Holden Education Endowment Fund

The Holden Endowment Fund was established in 1997 upon the transfer of three trusts administered by Merchants National Bank of Aurora in the name of the couple.

The resulting fund provides income for the educational needs of Aurora students.

The monetary value of each scholarship award varies depending upon the amount available in each individual scholarship fund. The most common scholarship award amount is $1,000 for a single year. Scholarships are designated as non-renewable one-year awards or renewable multi-year awards depending upon the scholarship fund criteria, as established by the donor of the scholarship fund.

The Historic Preservation Fund Grant (HPF) offers matching grants to support projects that provide public benefits, reimbursing up to 60% of eligible costs. Applications open from December 1, 2025, to February 1, 2026. Grants typically range from $15,000 to $65,000, focusing on architectural surveys, preservation plans, and restoration of historically significant buildings. The program prioritizes non-profit, municipal, and civic organization projects that demonstrate public use and align with the State Historic Preservation Plan.

The Daughters of American Agriculture Scholarship honors pioneering women in agriculture, offering two $1,000 scholarships to women or their daughters pursuing education in agricultural fields. Eligibility includes being a farmer, rancher, or related to one, demonstrating financial need, and having experience in agriculture. The Jean Ibendahl Scholarship supports young women aged 18-23, while the Sister Thomas More Bertels Scholarship is for women 24 and older. This initiative empowers the next generation in agricultural leadership.

The American Agri-Women Gail McPherson Fly-In Scholarship honors a founding member of AAW, supporting members to attend the annual Fly-In in Washington, DC. This scholarship is open to any AAW member, while applicants who have attended a previous Fly-In are ineligible. The initiative promotes leadership and engagement among agricultural women, fostering a community dedicated to advocacy and education.

Edward T. Bedford Foundation Scholarship Fund

About the Fund

The Bedford Foundation was established in 1994 by Palm Beach resident E. T. Bedford Davie, and is named in honor of his maternal grandfather, Edward T. Bedford.

Edward was born in Brooklyn, NY in 1849. He worked initially as a salesman for Charles Pratt & Co., selling lubricating and heating oils. Through collaboration with his friend, Robert Chesebrough, he helped develop and market the petroleum byproduct now more commonly known as Vaseline. Edward later became a sales agent for Standard Oil, and was named a director in 1903. He was a personal friend of John D. Rockefeller and his business acumen was highly regarded.

The Hazardous Materials Training and Planning Grant, offered by the Ohio Public Utilities Commission, aims to enhance public safety by funding training for emergency services personnel on managing hazardous materials spills during transportation. Eligible applicants include educational institutions and local governments, with grants covering various training types. Activities must be completed by May 31, 2026, with reimbursement requests due by June 30, 2026. Joint applications for collaborative training programs are encouraged, promoting cost-effective training solutions.

The William Macleay Microbiology Research Fund Grant supports innovative microbiological research in Australia. Open to postgraduate students and professional microbiologists, the grant encourages diverse applications aimed at advancing the field. Funds can be utilized for essential research expenses, including equipment, laboratory supplies, and travel within Australasia. However, requests for subsistence or conference travel will not be supported. This initiative fosters original contributions to microbiology, benefiting both academia and the broader community.

The Clinton and Nancy Schilling Technical Educational Grant Program, administered by the Community Foundation of the Ozarks, aims to enhance vocational and technical education in the Tri-County area (Jasper, Barton, and Dade counties). With a total funding of $200,000, grants of up to $50,000 are available for eligible 501(c)(3) organizations or IRS-approved entities that support educational initiatives. Priorities include classroom equipment, curriculum development, and educator stipends.

The South Dakota Community Development Block Grants for Urgent Need provide essential funding for local governments to address pressing community issues. This rolling application program, managed by the Governor's Office of Economic Development, focuses on enhancing infrastructure and services that benefit low- and moderate-income residents. Eligible projects aim to improve public health and safety, while fostering economic opportunities through job creation. Applications are continually accepted until funds are fully allocated or the year ends.

The Jonathan O. Davis Fellowship, offered by the Desert Research Institute, supports exceptional Masters and PhD students conducting research in Quaternary geology, geomorphology, and geoarchaeology within the Great Basin. Awards of up to $2500 for Masters students and $5000 for PhD students are available. This fellowship honors Jonathan O. Davis, a dedicated Quaternary scientist, and aims to foster significant research contributions to understanding this critical geological period.

The FEMS-Jensen Award, established to support Early Career Scientists, honors Dr. Hans Laurits Jensen, a prominent soil microbiologist. This biennial award recognizes outstanding academic achievement in microbiology and offers a fellowship of up to EUR 10,000 for research in a European laboratory. Eligible applicants are European PhD students or recent graduates under 36 years old. The award aims to enhance young scientists' careers by facilitating significant research opportunities.

The MAC: Artist Project Grant supports individual Maine artists at various career stages, funding projects that enhance artistic skills or public engagement. Grants may cover creation costs, materials, exhibitions, and more, with a maximum award of $2,500. Eligibility includes being a practicing artist, a Maine resident, and at least 18 years old. Ineligible applicants include those applying for multiple grants in one cycle or those with expenses related to politics or specific religious groups.

The FEMS-Lwoff Award for Achievements in Microbiology is a prestigious accolade awarded by the Federation of European Microbiological Societies (FEMS) since 2000. It honors exceptional contributions in microbiology, recognizing individuals or groups who have made significant impacts in the field. Winners receive a prize lecture opportunity, a commemorative silver medal, and an honorarium of €1000. This award aims to reflect diversity and promote high-quality research with societal benefits, encouraging nominations from underrepresented groups.

Hate Crimes Prevention

The purpose of the competitive state-funded grant is to support the implementation of programs designed to design programming to prevent hate crimes and incidences of bias in public schools as defined under Massachusetts General LawsM.G.L. Chapter 22C, Section 32.

There is $1,000,000 available for this grant.

The maximum amount for which new applicants can apply for is $50,000, school districts receiving funding in the past two years under this line item may apply for up to $25,000.

The Joan K. Hunt and Rachel M. Hunt Summer Scholarship in Field Botany aims to promote the study of field botany among students in the U.S. by providing a $3500 annual grant for summer study opportunities. Eligible students include undergraduates and graduate students up to the master's degree level, who are U.S. citizens or permanent residents. The scholarship encourages hands-on experience in various botanical projects, enhancing the understanding and appreciation of botany in horticulture.

H. David Faust Memorial Scholarship Fund

A native of Philadelphia, David made his home in West Palm Beach for more than 20 years. He was the administrative partner of Steel, Hector, Davis, Burns & Middleton (now Steel Hector & Davis), as well as attorney for the towns of Ocean Ridge and South Palm Beach. Additionally, he taught law courses at Palm Beach Community College. David was extremely active in his church, and served as a board member of the Community Foundation for six years. He was instrumental in starting the scholarship program.

Dave always said that he was content with his life, that it had been a good and satisfying one, and it surely seems to have been – a successful career, a prestigious and challenging practice, a prominence in the community, the bar, his church and his firm, blessed with a healthy and accomplished family, with a wife whose love, strength and enormous depth have been demonstrated so magnificently over this past year – all these were David’s. And perhaps, most important of all to him, was his deep and abiding faith in God. David’s life is an exemplar to all of us – the perfect partner, the great counselor, the outstanding lawyer, the effortlessly skilled leader, the caring father and husband. While he was here, he set a course for all of us in our daily lives which we will be proud to point to and should hope to emulate.”

The Garden Club of America Fellowship in Tropical Botany aims to enhance the preservation of tropical forests by increasing the number of botanists with practical field experience. Established in 1983, the fellowship provides two grants of $5,500 annually for doctoral candidates pursuing research in tropical plant systematics and forest ecology. Eligible applicants include U.S. citizens or permanent residents enrolled in U.S. institutions, who are expected to complete their Ph.D. in Botany within two years.

Ernest Frank Scholarship Fund Created in Memory of Arlene Fulton Hammond

The Ernest Frank Scholarship Fund was established in memory of Arlene Fulton Hammond, a beloved neighbor and dear friend whose life embodied kindness, warmth and unwavering grace. Created by Ernest Frank, who considered Arlene a surrogate mother, the fund honors her legacy by supporting educational opportunities — something she deeply valued.

The scholarship fund serves as a lasting expression of love, respect and friendship, ensuring that Arlene’s spirit lives on by helping students pursue brighter futures — just as she would have wanted.

The AABP Amstutz Scholarship aims to support outstanding veterinary students with a one-time cash award, promoting their education in bovine medicine. Funded by the AABP Foundation and member donations, the scholarship encourages recipients to attend the AABP Annual Conference to receive their awards. Eligible applicants must be student AABP members enrolled in accredited veterinary programs, graduating in 2025 or 2026, and intending to practice in the U.S. or Canada.

Art Omi: Artists—Charlotte Street Fellowship

Every year, Charlotte Street offers a Kansas City-based visual artist the opportunity to attend Art OMI’s residency program in Ghent, New York. Starting in 2026, all visual artists and culture bearers currently living in Kansas City are eligible to apply, as well as nominees from former Art Omi Residents. The application process is administered by Art OMI, and selections made by a panel of jurors that includes Charlotte Street staff. The selected artist receives a three week, fully-funded residency and a $500 stipend. Art Omi invites 30 artists from around the world, representing a wide diversity of artistic styles and practices, to gather in rural New York for four weeks each summer to experiment, collaborate and share ideas.

Irving R. and Carol Rutkin Scholarship Fund

• High school senior attending a public or private High school in the southern part of Palm Beach County (Delray Beach to Boca Raton).
• The student must exhibit integrity and initiative.
• This is a need based scholarship.

Samerian Foundation

Founded in 2003, the Samerian Foundation is dedicated to perpetuating the vision of Cindy and Paul Skjodt, the founders. They seek to enhance the quality of life by providing funds through a grant making process for education, economic development, health, youth sports, community organizations meeting the needs of the underserved, and humanitarian projects.

Though the Samerian Foundation primarily serves Central Indiana, it has taken part in some international endeavors and have reached outside the state on special projects.

The Samerian Foundation is the philanthropic vehicle of the Skjodt’s generosity. To date, they have granted 2,105 requests of nearly $93.4 million.

The Samerian Foundation is lovingly named after Cindy and Paul’s children, Samantha, Erik, and Ian, who serve on the board.

Ian J. Skjodt Scholarship

This scholarship was established by the Simon-Skjodt family to encourage students to pursue degrees in media studies at Indiana University.
