Samerian Foundation

Founded in 2003, the Samerian Foundation is dedicated to perpetuating the vision of Cindy and Paul Skjodt, the founders. They seek to enhance the quality of life by providing funds through a grant making process for education, economic development, health, youth sports, community organizations meeting the needs of the underserved, and humanitarian projects.

Though the Samerian Foundation primarily serves Central Indiana, it has taken part in some international endeavors and have reached outside the state on special projects.

The Samerian Foundation is the philanthropic vehicle of the Skjodt’s generosity. To date, they have granted 2,105 requests of nearly $93.4 million.

The Samerian Foundation is lovingly named after Cindy and Paul’s children, Samantha, Erik, and Ian, who serve on the board.

Cindy Simon-Skjodt Scholarship

This scholarship was established by the Simon-Skjodt family to encourage students pursuing degrees with a focus on global studies, international law, or related disciplines at Indiana University.

The CNPS SCV Undergraduate Scholarships support students conducting research on the conservation and ecology of native plants in Central and Northern California. Scholarships of up to $3,000 are available, focusing on projects related to native plant conservation, experimental design, and the significance of the research. The Santa Clara Valley Chapter encourages undergraduate students and research teams to apply, especially those investigating the rich biodiversity of the San Francisco Bay Area.

Edwin P. and Patricia A. Pedersen Scholarship Fund

Students from Jupiter, Florida and graduated (or are graduating) from Jupiter High School.

The Colorado Dental Association Foundation Grant aims to enhance community oral health through funding projects that address documented needs for underserved populations. The CDA prioritizes proposals demonstrating a proven track record of effective service delivery and ensuring sustainable outcomes beyond the grant term. Eligible applicants include charitable nonprofits, government agencies, and dental clinics focused on underserved communities. This initiative seeks to create lasting improvements in access to dental care across Colorado.

Albert W. Medernach Scholarship Endowment Fund

This fund, which was created upon the receipt of a bequest from the estate of Albert William Medernach, provides scholarships to students residing within the Community Foundation service area.

Albert Medernach (1941-2012) was born in Aurora, Illinois to John and Loretta Medernach. His father worked at the National Brush Company and his mother was a homemaker. They were blessed with twelve children.

Their son Albert attended St. Nicholas Catholic Grade School and was a graduate of Marmion Academy.

He served in the United States Army from 1964 to 1966 and was employed by Caterpillar Tractor Company for thirty years.

After retirement, he volunteered for Hesed House and St. Rita of Cascia Church, where he became affectionately known as “Mr. St. Rita.”

Mr. Medernach was a master gardener who looked forward to the springtime when he was able to resume the design of his flowerbeds and other plantings.

His devotion to family was of great importance to him as demonstrated by the special care he provided to his mother prior to her passing. He was a kind and thoughtful man who brightened the lives of others.

Albert Medernach will be remembered for generations to come for his generous provision for the educational futures of local students.

Michael David McGrath Scholarship Endowment Fund

The Michael David McGrath Scholarship Endowment Fund was established to honor the memory and celebrate the life of Michael David McGrath (1977-2003).

The fund, which was created in 2006, became an endowment in 2013.

Michael was a graduate of Downers Grove North High School and made his living repairing and refurbishing computers. He was an intelligent and inquisitive young man of unlimited potential.

As an encouragement to future generations, this scholarship is intended for students who possess both the ability and desire to increase their knowledge in a chosen field of study.

This scholarship also is designed to provide opportunities for students with limited financial resources to enhance their skills and affirm their self-worth.

Michael was a multi-talented young man who frequently benefited from the kindness of others. This scholarship is offered to recognize and perpetuate those qualities.

The McElhattan Foundation focuses on innovative solutions to end workplace fatalities by 2050. It invites proposals that develop new technologies, particularly those that eliminate dangerous tasks at work. The foundation partners with the National Safety Council’s Work to Zero program to enhance safety practices. Organizations seeking funding should be established non-profits with a history of successful collaboration, and grants typically start at $50,000. Applications are accepted on a rolling basis, fostering impactful initiatives.

Richard E. & Ann R. McWethy Scholarship Endowment Fund

This fund provides scholarships for residents of Kendall County, Illinois.

Ann Riford McWethy (1919-2019) was born in Boston, Massachusetts in 1919 to Lulu and Otis Riford. She grew up in Canton, south of Boston.

After four years at prep school at Northfield, Massachusetts, Mrs. McWethy graduated from Green Mountain College in Vermont.

As a youth, she played tennis and taught swimming and canoeing as a counselor at Camp Waukeela in New Hampshire. She enjoyed other sports as well, including downhill and cross-country skiing.

After college she worked as a legal secretary in Boston.

She met her future husband Richard E. McWethy at a naval officers’ dance at Harvard University. He knew that “she was the one” right away. They were married a few months later in January of 1944 in her home.

Richard (Dick) McWethy (1921-2014) was born and raised in Aurora, Illinois. He spent his summers at the family cottage near South Haven on Lake Michigan enjoying swimming, sailing and tennis.

He graduated first in his class from West Aurora High School in 1939. He then enrolled at Caltech in Pasadena, majoring in engineering.

Mr. McWethy was on active duty with the Naval Reserve when school was not in session. He spent one summer aboard the 110-foot schooner “Volador,” sailing patrol one hundred to one hundred-fifty miles offshore watching for Japanese submarines.

After graduation, he was called for active duty in the Navy and was sent to Harvard University for communications training.

Eventually, he served on Attu, at the end of the Aleutian Island chain in Alaska. There he worked in communications with code machines while they launched bombing runs over northern Japan. He noted that the weather reports on Attu ended every day with “wind gusts to 60k.”

The couple had three children – Merrill, Peggy and Lee.

The Facilities for Atmospheric Research and Education (FARE) Program, managed by the National Science Foundation (NSF), supports advanced research in atmospheric sciences through specialized facilities like the Lower Atmosphere Observing Facilities (LAOF) and Community Instruments and Facilities (CIF). These resources enable the geosciences research community to conduct essential fieldwork and studies by providing access to state-of-the-art instrumentation and logistical support. The Jeffrey C. & Carol A. Carrier Poster Award, established in 1999, recognizes outstanding posters presented by AES student members at the Annual Meeting. This award honors Jeff and Carol Carrier for their advocacy of student participation in the Society. To be eligible, applicants must be current AES members, enrolled students, and the first or sole authors of their studies. They must also indicate their intent to compete at the time of abstract submission.

The Genetics Society offers Summer Studentships for undergraduate students aiming to explore genetics research. Grants provide a £300 weekly allowance for up to 8 weeks, along with funding for host laboratory expenses and a place in a Summer School Workshop. Applicants must be members of the Genetics Society and projects should be feasible within the timeframe. This initiative fosters hands-on experience in genetics, enriching students' academic journeys.

The New York Flora Association Research Grant supports botanical research in New York, aiming to enhance understanding and appreciation of the region's flora. Founded in 1990, the association encourages both members and non-member students to submit proposals, particularly for work conducted within the state. With a strong history of community engagement and over 300 members, NYFA has successfully promoted conservation, research, and education related to New York's native plants.

Thorium Action Group/Kerr-McGee Chemical Corporation Scholarship Endowment Fund

This fund provides scholarships to graduating high school seniors who reside within West Chicago Community High School District 94 in the State of Illinois.

It is a living legacy that symbolizes the joint effort of the Thorium Action Group, the people of the City of West Chicago, Illinois, their elected representatives, and the Kerr-McGee Chemical Corporation to remove the radioactive thorium contamination from the community.

This fund was established on September 17, 1997 with a generous donation from the Kerr-McGee Chemical Corporation. Kerr-McGee made the donation in the name of the Thorium Action Group because of the group’s fight to clean up the city.

The AARP Community Challenge Grant supports innovative projects that enhance community livability for people aged 50 and older. Funded by the AARP Foundation, these demonstration grants range from $10,000 to $25,000 and aim to improve pedestrian safety, expand broadband access, and reconnect divided communities. Since 2017, AARP has awarded over $20 million in grants, fostering immediate improvements and long-term progress across the United States, including Puerto Rico and the U.S. Virgin Islands.

Christopher N. Coppola Scholarship Fund

About the Fund

When friends remember Christopher N. Coppola, who died unexpectedly in March 2000 at age 33, they speak of his boundless energy, unflagging good humor, and infectious zest for life.

“He was the glue that kept all the rest of us together,” said Mary Murphy, whose older brother, Martin, was Chris’ classmate from kindergarten through graduation at Cardinal Newman High School. An only child, Chris considered the Murphy siblings — and many others — his extended family. “He was always with us,” she added.

After earning his degree from Appalachian State University in North Carolina, Chris returned to West Palm Beach to work with the Murphy family’s construction company. He later built a successful career as a certified commercial real estate appraiser with firms including Johnson & Parrish and Callaway & Price, contributing to major development projects throughout South Florida.

“Chris had more circles of friends than anyone could ever imagine,” said Martin Murphy. “He just loved being around people. He was a real gregarious person. Everyone felt he was their best friend.”

“He could always find something good about someone,” added Mary. “He really listened. He was a great friend to everyone. He could always make you laugh. He was an unbelievable person.”

Chris’s sudden loss left a void that inspired his friends to honor his memory in a lasting way. Led by the Murphy and Satter families, they established the Christopher N. Coppola Scholarship Fund at the Community Foundation for Palm Beach and Martin Counties. The fund supports graduating high school seniors in Palm Beach County who plan to study real estate or related fields such as construction, architecture, urban planning, development, or appraisal.

The NAMA Memorial Fellowship, awarded by the Mycological Society of America, recognizes promising graduate students in mycology. Two fellowships are granted annually based on academic merit and research potential. Recipients must be student members of MSA and can use the funds to enhance their studies. Additionally, they are encouraged to contribute to McIlvainea and attend the annual meeting, fostering connections within the mycological community. This initiative supports diversity and inclusion in the field.

The MSA Travel Awards, previously known as the Mentor Student Travel Award, recognize outstanding achievements in mycology by supporting students presenting their research at the Mycological Society of America annual meeting. These awards honor renowned mycologists, fostering a diverse and inclusive environment for future leaders in the field. Eligible candidates include current MSA student members and those presenting their work, ensuring a rewarding experience for all participants.

The MSA Graduate Fellowship, awarded by the Mycological Society of America, recognizes outstanding graduate students in mycology. Annually, two fellowships are granted based on academic merit and research potential. These funds serve as supplementary support for graduate studies, and recipients are encouraged to attend the annual meeting to engage with the mycological community. The fellowship aims to promote diversity and welcomes applicants from all backgrounds, ensuring equal opportunity for emerging mycologists.

The AARP Community Challenge Grant: Capacity-Building Microgrant offers $2,500 to support projects that enhance community livability for residents aged 50 and older. Initiated in 2017, it has funded over 1,700 projects nationwide, focusing on immediate improvements and long-term progress. Eligible organizations include nonprofits and government entities, aiming to implement innovative programs in areas like disaster preparedness, walkability, and home modifications. This initiative fosters inclusive communities and empowers older adults.

The International MSA Travel Award, offered by the Mycological Society of America, supports current student members and postdocs presenting at the annual meeting. This award recognizes outstanding contributions in mycology and encourages diversity among applicants. It allows recipients to attend and engage with fellow researchers, fostering collaboration and innovation in the field. Previous award winners may reapply, with preference given to those who have not received the award more than twice.

The C.J. Alexopoulos Prize, awarded by the Mycological Society of America, recognizes outstanding early-career mycologists. Candidates must be MSA members and hold a degree obtained within the last ten years. Self-nominations are permitted, and nominees not selected may be reconsidered for two additional years. The award includes a plaque and monetary prize, with a formal presentation at the MSA annual meeting. The prize promotes inclusivity across diverse backgrounds in the mycology field.

Trembacki & Hultgren Families Scholarship Endowment Fund

This fund provides scholarships to students graduating from East Aurora or West Aurora High School who will be entering the field of teaching.

Raymond Trembacki (1925-2000) was a teacher in the West Aurora School System from 1952 to 1959.

He then moved to East Aurora High School to develop the photography curriculum. In 1983, he continued his teaching career at the College of DuPage.

Janice Trembacki (1927-1997) was an English teacher in the West Aurora School System. She taught at Benjamin Franklin and Thomas Jefferson Junior High Schools. She retired in 1990.

Mr. and Mrs. Trembacki were graduates of Illinois State University (BA) and Colorado State College (MA).

Dale and Rae Jean Hultgren also had long and distinguished careers as educators for the Aurora schools.

In 1953, Dale Hultgren joined his sister Janice Trembacki in the West Aurora School System. He taught at Freeman Elementary School and later he taught science at Thomas Jefferson Junior High School.

Mr. Hultgren is a graduate of Illinois State University (BS) and the University of Colorado (MS).

Rae Jean Hultgren (1935-2008) taught in the Business Education Department at West Aurora High School, where she later became the department chairperson.

She also taught at East Aurora High School in the Business Education Department until her retirement in 2000. Mrs. Hultgren is a graduate of the University of Iowa (BBA and MA).

The Backus Award, presented by the Mycological Society of America, honors two promising graduate students in mycology each year. Candidates are assessed based on their academic achievements, research potential, and future contributions to the field. This fellowship supports their graduate studies and encourages attendance at the MSA annual meeting, fostering connections within the mycological community. Eligible applicants must be student members of MSA and currently enrolled in a university in Canada or the United States.

The Ernest R. Caverly Awards, presented by the Brookline Education Foundation, recognize exceptional educators in the Public Schools of Brookline. Nominees must have at least seven years of service and exemplify core values such as excellence in teaching and educational equity. Each year, two winners are selected from preK-grade 8 and BHS nominees. The winners will be honored at the Celebrating Teachers event, showcasing their contributions to the community and inspiring future educators.

The National PLTW Administrator of the Year award recognizes exemplary leadership in education, highlighting administrators who positively impact PLTW schools or districts. One outstanding administrator will be honored for their commitment to expanding STEM access and empowering students with essential skills. The recipient will receive an engraved award, a $1,000 prize, and $2,000 in myPLTW Store credit for their school, along with travel and registration to the PLTW Summit 2026.

The Senior Citizen Services Grants offer support to charitable organizations and government entities that enhance the quality of life for residents aged 55 and older in Pinellas County. Grants, ranging from $800 to $20,000, can be requested for various support services, including transportation, utilities assistance, and elder abuse prevention. Letters of Intent are accepted between November 1 and October 15, 2025, prioritizing nonprofit agencies that align with community needs and provide essential services.

The Shiu-Ying Hu Student/Postdoctoral Exchange Award facilitates collaborative research between American and Chinese scholars in the field of woody plant biology. Established in honor of Professor Shiu-Ying Hu's contributions to botanical science, it supports graduate students and postdoctoral researchers from the People's Republic of China or Harvard University. Awardees can explore living collections at the Arnold Arboretum or conduct field studies in China, enhancing cross-cultural academic exchange and scientific discovery.
