William Pretty Jr. Scholarship Endowment

About Dr. William “Bill” Pretty Jr.

The family of Dr. William “Bill” Pretty Jr. established the William Pretty Jr. Scholarship Endowment in memory of their beloved husband and father after he passed away on September 28, 2003, at the age of 59. Through this fund, his family wants to continue Pretty’s commitment to assist and inspire youth.

Dr. Pretty believed that with determination, perseverance, and a strong belief in God, anything was possible. He graduated from Shaw University and began his career in the federal government helping disadvantaged youth. After ten years, and with knowledge gained from helping in his father’s restaurant, Pretty became the first African American McDonald’s operator in North Carolina. Along with his wife Mildred, he operated three McDonald’s locations for 27 years in Sanford, NC.

Pretty had a special rapport with young people and always went out of his way to nurture them. His motto was, “the work experience, no matter how short, is very valuable.” To support his motto, even when overstaffed, he always hired young people at his McDonald’s.

With Mildred, Bill served his community in multiple ways. He was a trustee of Shaw University and First Calvary Baptist Church in Sanford and served on many other boards and committees. Mildred was a board member of the Ronald McDonald House in Durham.

His family created the William Pretty Jr. Scholarship Endowment at NCCF after the Black McDonald’s Operators Association approached them about the idea.

Dr. Pretty was a true humanitarian. His love for people and his outreaching personality created valuable and long-lasting relationships. The Pretty family is proud to support students like him.

Purpose of the Fund

This fund provides timely assistance to residents and nonprofits in Orange, Durham, Johnston, and Wake counties when a crisis interrupts everyday life. Grounded in our Invest–Convene–Amplify approach, it strengthens the region’s ability to respond quickly and ensures families and community partners get the help they need without delay. Because it is fueled entirely by donor support, every contribution goes directly to stabilizing neighbors and helping them move forward.

Individuals Experiencing Financial Hardship

Residents in any of the four counties can apply directly.

Eligible support may include housing stability, food access, transportation, or other essential needs created by a crisis.

Award Amount:

Up to $1,000 per approved application.



The PLTW Engineering Program Expansion by Burns and McDonnell aims to enhance STEM education in eligible communities. This initiative supports schools in expanding their existing PLTW Engineering programs, providing students with hands-on experiences and essential skills. The program focuses on empowering students through new courses and teacher training, ensuring access for underrepresented populations. By fostering excitement around STEM, Burns and McDonnell is committed to shaping the future workforce and enhancing educational opportunities in critical areas.

The Union Home Foundation Grant provides financial support to nonprofit organizations that promote economic self-sufficiency through financial literacy and housing initiatives. Established in 2015, this grant has awarded over $2 million to various nonprofits across the U.S. Grants typically start at $1,000 and are available for a one-year period. Organizations must be 501(c)(3) tax-exempt and can only apply once per year, following specific eligibility criteria.

The PLTW Engineering program, in partnership with Burns and McDonnell, aims to enhance STEM education by providing grants to public and charter schools in specific counties. This initiative empowers students to engage with real-world challenges through hands-on learning experiences. Eligible schools must offer PLTW Engineering courses, ensuring access to quality education for students from diverse backgrounds. With a total grant of $40,000 over two years, this program seeks to inspire the next generation of engineers and innovators.

Responsive Grantmaking

We anticipate awarding 20-30 nonprofits the opportunity to participate in scenario planning in partnership with Community Wealth Partners, a trusted consultant. Building on 20+ years of experience supporting nonprofit leaders through complex challenges, Community Wealth Partners designed this program to meet nonprofits where they are, accounting for shifting conditions, limited capacity, and the need for practical tools that build long-term resilience.

Scenario planning supports nonprofits by helping manage uncertainty, envisioning new opportunities, identifying unexpected threats, and building organizational resilience.

Program Goals

• Support established Triangle nonprofits to maintain their capacity through a period of organizational change so they can continue providing core services and strategize how to best remain agile, innovative, and responsive to community needs moving forward. 
• Understand and promote promising tools and practices to support nonprofits through a period of significant organizational change. 

Scenario Planning Activities: (Anticipated to occur over a +/- 3-month period)

• Virtual Workshops: Three 90-minute sessions guiding participants through a five-step process, with real-time application to their organization’s challenges and space to complete their own scenario plan.
• Coaching: Up to 3 hours of individualized coaching support to help leaders work through the steps of the scenario planning process with hands-on guidance in decision-making.

Grantmaking

• Opportunities for a general operating grant up to $10,000 will be based on participation in the scenario planning cohort.
• The Foundation hopes funding to support participation and/or activities to implement scenario plans.

This initiative is designed to foster long-term financial resilience and sustainability. By going “beyond the grant,” the Foundation aims to provide comprehensive support and invest in strong, resilient, sustainable nonprofits.

The PLTW Computer Science program, supported by Burns and McDonnell, aims to enhance STEM education in various communities by funding schools to implement PLTW courses. This partnership promotes student engagement with real-world challenges, preparing them for future careers in technology. With a total grant of $20,000, schools must offer multiple PLTW courses over two years, ensuring access to quality education for underserved populations.

Burns and McDonnell, a 100% employee-owned firm, partners with Project Lead The Way (PLTW) to enhance access to STEM education. By expanding PLTW Computer Science programs in local schools, they aim to engage students in real-world challenges and equip them with essential skills. Eligible schools must be located in specific counties and serve a majority of students from low-income backgrounds. This initiative supports the growth of STEM education, fostering a brighter future for communities through enhanced learning opportunities.

The Morrisville Community Fund Grant, established by the North Carolina Community Foundation in 2011, supports qualified charitable organizations that address community needs in Morrisville. Eligible applicants include 501(c)(3) nonprofits, local governments, and faith-based organizations for outreach programs. The grant does not fund political activities, general operating support for religious entities, or individual benefits. This initiative emphasizes inclusivity and aims to foster lasting contributions to the community.

Cumberland Community Foundation ("CCF") manages more than 60 scholarship endowment funds created by local individuals, families, civic organizations, and corporations who want to provide a path to higher education for future generations. 

Each year, Cumberland Community Foundation announces more than $1,000,000 in college scholarships to students from southeastern North Carolina.

Cape Fear River Assembly Scholarship

Any high school or college student accepted/enrolled in a college in the Cape Fear River Basin. 

The PLTW Gateway program, in collaboration with Burns & McDonnell, aims to enhance STEM education by expanding access to Project Lead The Way initiatives in eligible communities. By providing grants for program expansion, the initiative encourages schools to implement new PLTW units and train teachers, empowering students with essential skills for future careers. This partnership seeks to inspire a new generation of learners through hands-on, real-world challenges, thereby fostering greater participation in STEM fields across various regions.

The NC Sheriffs Association Undergraduate Criminal Justice Scholarship provides $2,000 annually to North Carolina residents pursuing a degree in criminal justice. Eligible students must be enrolled in a minimum of 12 credit hours and express interest in law enforcement careers. Recipients are prioritized based on their familial connections to law enforcement. This scholarship is administered by the North Carolina State Education Assistance Authority for UNC System students and by NC Independent Colleges and Universities for private institutions.

The PLTW Gateway program, in partnership with Burns and McDonnell, aims to enhance STEM education by supporting schools in eligible counties to implement PLTW Gateway units. With a total grant of $20,000, schools are encouraged to offer at least one unit per academic year, fostering real-world skills and engagement in STEM fields. This initiative seeks to increase access and participation in high-quality STEM learning experiences, ultimately preparing students for future careers.

TE Connectivity's Community Ambassador Program supports meaningful community impact by providing grants to registered nonprofits and educational institutions. This initiative evaluates proposals based on alignment with TE's values, community focus areas like education or health services, and opportunities for employee engagement. The program operates both in the US and internationally, with numerous ambassador locations, aiming to foster community development and engagement around the globe.

The PLTW Launch program, supported by Burns and McDonnell, aims to enhance student engagement in STEM education within eligible communities. This initiative will provide grants to schools that implement at least one PLTW Launch module in the 2025-2026 academic year, followed by another module in subsequent years. The program is designed to empower students with hands-on learning experiences that connect real-world challenges to essential skills, fostering a stronger future in STEM fields.

The Bayer Fund Health & Wellness Grant Program aims to support organizations that provide education and resources for patients and caregivers facing cancer and cardiovascular diseases. Grants focus on assisting communities, particularly the African American population, in managing these health issues. Funding covers educational services, disease awareness, and access to care, with all activities to commence post-funding decisions. Eligible organizations must hold a 501(c)(3) status and operate within 55 miles of Bayer sites.

The Bright Ideas Education Grants program, supported by North Carolina’s Electric Cooperatives, empowers K-12 teachers to implement innovative projects in classrooms. With applications open from April to September, educators can seek funding for creative learning initiatives. Annually, around 600 grants are awarded, enhancing educational experiences across diverse disciplines. This initiative not only enriches classroom instruction but also strengthens community ties, demonstrating the cooperatives' commitment to improving quality of life for local students.

Each chapter operates independently, focusing on unique interpretations of 'awesome' across various fields such as arts and technology. Grants are awarded monthly, emphasizing no-strings-attached support. This initiative encourages creativity and experimentation, aiming to inspire and delight communities worldwide. For more details, applicants can explore individual chapter preferences and restrictions through the foundation's website.

The Zurn Foundation Grant supports community well-being through financial contributions and volunteer efforts. With a focus on Basic Needs, Education, and Environment, the Foundation aims to enhance quality of life by providing essentials, promoting STEM education, and protecting natural resources. Organizations applying for this grant should align with these pillars to foster positive community impact. Applications must be submitted by May 1 for the July meeting or by November 1 for the January meeting.
