The mission of the California Institute for Regenerative Medicine (CIRM) is to accelerate world class science to deliver transformative regenerative medicine treatments in an equitable manner to a diverse California and world. In support of this mission, CIRM’s governing board approved a structured, data-driven Strategic Allocation Framework (SAF) in 2024 to prioritize resources and maximize the impact of CIRM’s funding.

Designed in response to this framework, CIRM’s new Discovery Programs include complementary funding opportunities that support research at different scales and levels of maturity, emphasizing multidisciplinary innovation, knowledge sharing and leveraging synergies across CIRM-funded programs. These new funding opportunities support comprehensive, discovery research across a diverse range of diseases and bottlenecks to accelerate the development of potential therapeutics and biomarkers in regenerative medicine.

DISC4 Awards

Supporting Multidisciplinary, Collaborative Research

DISC4 supports expansive, cross-disciplinary and integrated studies led by collaborative teams applying a range of technologies and approaches to accelerate foundational insights in disease biology. 

Expected Outcomes

Funded projects are expected to achieve one or more of the following outcomes:

• Discovering novel mechanistic insights or advance our understanding of human diseases;
• Extending understanding of disease mechanisms to all affected human populations;
• Identification and validation of novel therapeutic strategies, targets, and/or biomarker(s).

Focus Area (Fiscal Year 2026/2027): Immune-Tissue Interplay in Disease, Homeostasis, and Repair

CIRM is seeking multidisciplinary proposals focused on elucidating the molecular and cellular mechanisms by which the human immune system interacts with and influences tissues, particularly in the context of pathology, injury or regeneration. See PA for illustrative examples. While priority will be given to proposals aligned with this focus area, proposals outside this area may be considered if they represent a compelling opportunity to advance DISC4 program goals.

The Readings & Workshops Mini-Grants provide funding for individual readings and workshops, ranging from $150 to $450 per session. Open to New York State and California organizations, these grants support writers' participation in events. Eligible organizations include colleges, cultural centers, and libraries. Priority is given to those serving diverse audiences and presenting in underserved areas. The application process requires details about the writer and event dates. Grant amounts are capped annually, and matching funds are encouraged.

The Trauma Recovery Center Grant supports California organizations providing vital mental health and social services to survivors of violent crime. With an annual funding of $2 million from the Restitution Fund, this grant enables TRCs to offer comprehensive support tailored to individual needs, including clinical case management and trauma-informed treatment. The initiative aims to enhance accessibility for underserved victims, ensuring they receive the necessary resources and support to aid in their recovery.

The California Health Care Foundation (CHCF) is committed to enhancing California's health care system, particularly for low-income individuals. CHCF focuses on improving access to coverage and care, advancing people-centered approaches, and laying the foundation for meaningful change. Grants are awarded for projects that align with these goals, emphasizing relevance to California's health care challenges. While unsolicited proposals are welcomed, most grants result from competitive requests, supporting innovative solutions to enhance health care delivery.

The Local Government Waste Tire Amnesty Grant Program, administered by CalRecycle, offers $1,500,000 in funding for fiscal year 2025-26 to support local governments in conducting free tire recycling events. These events are designed to help the public and businesses dispose of waste tires conveniently. Up to $40,000 is available for individual applicants, while regional applicants can receive up to $90,000. The program aims to promote responsible waste management and reduce illegal tire dumping.

California Governor's Office of Emergency Services

With over 38 million residents (12 percent of the US population), the State of California is the most populous state in the nation and has the third largest land area among the states (163,695 square miles). California is culturally, ethnically, economically, ecologically, and politically diverse, and maintains the eighth largest economy in the world with 13 percent of the U.S. gross domestic product. California also faces numerous risks and threats to our people, property, economy, environment and is prone to earthquakes, floods, significant wildfires, prolonged drought impacts, public health emergencies, cybersecurity attacks, agricultural and animal disasters, as well threats to homeland security. Cal OES takes a proactive approach to addressing these risks, threats, and vulnerabilities that form the basis of our mission and has been tested through real events, as well as comprehensive exercises that help us maintain our state of readiness to plan for and mitigate impacts.

Listos California CERT Support Grant (LC) Program

The purpose of the LC Program is to provide funding to a fiscal administrator which will in coordination with Cal OES, support new and existing CERT programs to build their capacity to prepare vulnerable and underserved populations including, but not limited to: providing CERT training in languages other than English, providing CERT training to underserved populations and/or populations that are at high risk for disasters, providing accommodations for training participants that have access and functional needs, such as English as a Second Language (ESL) interpretation, and building capacity to respond to disasters.

The Local Enforcement Agency Grant Program, administered by CalRecycle, provides critical funding for Local Enforcement Agencies (LEAs) to enhance solid waste facilities permit and inspection programs. With $1,500,000 available for FY 2025–26, including $96,000 dedicated to LEA training and outreach, this initiative aims to bolster existing budgets and ensure effective waste management. Projects funded will directly contribute to the sustainability and compliance of solid waste operations in California.

The Wetlands and Mountain Meadows Restoration program, funded by the California Department of Fish and Wildlife, aims to restore wetlands and watershed ecosystems with a budget of up to $54 million. This initiative supports biodiversity, climate resilience, and public access while enhancing habitats as per the Natural and Working Lands Climate Smart Strategy. Projects are accepted on a rolling basis, emphasizing sustainable practices and cohabitation with wildlife, particularly beavers.

The Peter E. Palmquist Memorial Fund Grant provides vital support for research into under-researched women photographers and Western American photographers from the Great Depression era. Open to both individual researchers and nonprofit institutions, this grant emphasizes the importance of quality proposals and the ability to execute projects efficiently. Recipients will contribute their findings to the Humboldt Area Foundation, thus enriching the Peter Palmquist Archive and promoting the legacy of photography history.

The California Department of Fish and Wildlife is offering the Wildlife Corridors – Nature Based Solutions Grant to fund projects enhancing ecosystem restoration and protection. With over $200 million available, this initiative supports connectivity projects that align with the State Wildlife Action Plan. Eligible applicants include tribes, nonprofit organizations, and public agencies, aiming to foster multi-benefit, nature-based solutions for wildlife corridors and habitat connectivity.

The REHABILITATIVE INVESTMENT GRANTS FOR HEALING AND TRANSFORMATION (RIGHT) GRANT 3.0 aims to support community-based, nonprofit organizations in delivering trauma-informed and restorative justice programs within CDCR institutions. The funds can be used to sustain or expand existing programs or introduce new initiatives where such support is currently lacking, promoting healing and transformation within the correctional system.

The California State Duck Stamp Funding for Fiscal Year 2026 aims to protect and enhance migratory waterfowl habitats. Established in 1971, this program uses funds from stamp sales for approved projects that restore and develop essential breeding and wintering habitats. The California Department of Fish and Wildlife administers these funds, ensuring effective resource assessments and supporting nonprofit organizations involved in habitat projects. This initiative plays a crucial role in conserving waterfowl populations and their ecosystems.

The NOAA Digital Coast and Coastal Management Fellowship offers postgraduate students hands-on experience in coastal resource management. Established in 1996 and expanded in 2012, the program matches candidates with state coastal management programs and Digital Coast partners. Each year, up to six fellows are placed in coastal programs, while three fellows are placed in partner organizations. The fellowship provides a competitive salary, benefits, and reimbursement for professional development and travel, aiming to strengthen the next generation of coastal managers.

The Patterson Foundation offers Assistance Dog Program Grants to support organizations providing service animals to veterans and individuals with disabilities. Funding is available for projects that expand capacity, personnel costs related to puppy training, and program support aimed at improving client experiences. Eligible organizations must be 501(c)(3) non-profits and can request grants up to $35,000 for capital projects or $10,000 for program support. Applications are accepted through a two-step process.

By inviting qualified entities to apply for funding, the program focuses on improving hydrologic data access, forecasting capabilities, and modeling tools. This initiative aligns with federal priorities to optimize resources, ensuring water managers can effectively address future demands and adapt to climate challenges, thus fostering resilience in water operations across the nation.

The Banner Bank Community Support Program offers grants to nonprofit organizations in Washington, Oregon, California, and Idaho focusing on housing, youth development, financial education, and economic growth. Priority is given to programs aiding low- and moderate-income populations. Organizations applying must not discriminate and should support essential community services. Applications are accepted year-round, with a review period of 45-60 days. However, certain areas, such as individual scholarships and political organizations, are ineligible for funding.

The Skilled Trades Scholarship benefits graduating high school seniors, GED recipients and current community college students pursuing training and certification in Career Education or Career Technical Education Pathways at Napa Valley College, Santa Rosa Junior College, or Solano Community College. Recipients of the scholarship will receive funding for up to two years while working to complete their certification or degree.

The Dogs for Joy Grant, funded by the Joy in Childhood Foundation, supports the integration of trained facility dogs in pediatric hospitals. The program aims to increase the presence of in-residence dogs, as research highlights their positive impact on reducing anxiety and improving patient outcomes. The Healthcare Scholarship is made possible by Queen of the Valley Foundation and benefits Napa County residents enrolled in nursing and respiratory therapy programs at Napa Valley College or Pacific Union College. Previous recipients are eligible to reapply in subsequent years for additional funding while completing their studies.

The Dunkin' Joyful Spaces Grant supports children's hospitals and community health centers in creating joyful environments for pediatric patients. Launched in 2022, this initiative helps fund play areas, healing gardens, and other kid-friendly spaces, enhancing the hospital experience. Grants typically range from $25,000 to $65,000 annually, with a maximum of $150,000 over three years. This opportunity encourages creativity in designing spaces that provide comfort and joy to children and their families during hospital stays.

The Museum Grant Program, established under California Assembly Bill 716, aims to support museums through competitive grants for projects focused on exhibits, education, and outreach, particularly benefiting historically underserved communities and students. Following the impacts of COVID-19, funding is prioritized for museums significantly affected by the pandemic. This initiative enhances access to cultural resources and promotes the preservation of California's historical and cultural heritage.

The Dunkin’ Prom Grant, provided by the Joy in Childhood Foundation, aims to bring joy to teenage patients unable to attend their own prom due to illness. By funding hospitals to host prom-like events, the program ensures these patients experience this significant milestone. Grants typically range from $20,000 to $50,000, supporting the creation of memorable events with themes, food, entertainment, and formal wear for the teens, making a positive impact in their lives.

The Connecting Joy Grant, provided by the Joy in Childhood Foundation, aims to enhance the hospital experience for children battling illness through engaging gaming programs. This initiative supports children's hospitals and nonprofits by funding equipment, staffing, and connectivity, ensuring children can enjoy gaming at their bedside. With grants ranging from $25,000 to $150,000, the program focuses on offering joy and distraction, helping young patients cope with their hospital stays while facilitating connections with peers.

The AW Environmental Grant Program, backed by American Water Works Company, Inc., aims to support community-driven projects focused on water conservation and the protection of vital water resources. Since 2012, the foundation has invested over $15 million in innovative initiatives that enhance access to clean water and promote responsible water usage in underserved communities. Eligible applicants include 501(c)(3) charities and educational institutions committed to environmental stewardship.

GFO-25-607 - Clean Transportation Program Hydrogen Infrastructure Project Opportunity (HIPO)

The purpose of this solicitation is to fund the deployment of hydrogen refueling infrastructure for light-, medium-, and/or heavy-duty on-road fuel cell electric vehicles.

This is a competitive grant solicitation. The California Energy Commission’s (CEC’s) Clean Transportation Program announces the availability of up to $45 million in grant funds for projects that will fund the deployment of hydrogen refueling infrastructure for light-, medium-, and/or heavy-duty on-road fuel cell electric vehicles (FCEVs). 

Of the $45 million, up to $21.2 million is dedicated to light-duty hydrogen refueling infrastructure and up to $23.8 million is dedicated to light-, medium-, and/or heavy-duty hydrogen refueling infrastructure.  

The solicitation objectives are to:

• Deploy new hydrogen refueling infrastructure for light-duty (LD) vehicles, with an emphasis on stations located in Santa Monica/West Los Angeles, San Francisco, Sacramento, and San Diego to alleviate market stress due to station demand, as well as medium-duty (MD) vehicles, or for heavy-duty (HD) uses including drayage, transit, and port operations. New hydrogen refueling infrastructure can also be a combination of the infrastructure types (mixed-use) listed above.
• Reopen temporarily non-operational (TNO) stations that would otherwise not return to open retail status.
• Provide additional funding for stations awarded under CEC Grant Funding Opportunity (GFO)-19-602 which are fully permitted and lacking capital to finish construction.
• Provide operations and maintenance (O&M) funding for the projects listed above once the station becomes open retail.
