Best Capacity Building Grants for Nonprofits

The Friends of Reservoirs: Large Grant supports fish habitat enhancement projects in manmade reservoirs, promoting conservation and partnerships. With approximately $250,000 in Federal funding and $500,000 from Bass Pro Shops, grants up to $75,000 are available. Projects must match funding and can be multi-year, with specific caps on subsequent funding. This initiative aims to address habitat impairments and enrich community quality of life through improved fishing opportunities.

The ABC Conservation Awards, funded by the African Bird Club, provide grants of up to £3,000 for conservation projects in Africa. Open to residents and institutions, these awards support diverse initiatives such as bird monitoring, educational programs, and local club support. With over £600,000 awarded since 1996, ABC has funded more than 300 projects across 50 countries, fostering significant contributions to the conservation of African birds and habitats.

The Trout and Salmon Foundation Grant offers matching funds up to $5,000 to support projects aimed at restoring and enhancing trout and salmon habitats in North America. Established in 1969, the foundation prioritizes partnerships with local watershed organizations focused on habitat improvement. Grants are provided for projects that physically restore streams and fisheries, with on-site labor recognized in certain cases. The foundation seeks to diversify funding across various watersheds and regions, ensuring a broad impact in conservation efforts.

The Latin American/Caribbean Conservation Research Grant, sponsored by the American Ornithological Society, aims to support early career scientists conducting conservation research on migratory and resident birds in Latin America and the Caribbean. Grants of up to $5,000 USD will be awarded for projects that demonstrate innovative approaches and actionable outcomes. Eligible applicants must have a graduate degree and a strong commitment to ethical research practices. Proposals are welcome in multiple languages, but abstracts must be in English.

The Friends of Reservoirs: Mossback Grant offers three grants of $1,000 in Mossback products to eligible members of Friends of Reservoirs organizations. Sponsored by Mossback Fish Habitat, these grants aim to enhance structural habitat in public waters. The total retail value is approximately $1,500. Applicants must cover freight costs, and a $25 application fee applies to each submission. This initiative supports habitat restoration efforts across member organizations.

Utah State Board of Education

The Utah State Board of Education (USBE) is a constitutionally established, elected, partisan body that exercises general control and supervision over the public education system in Utah, including establishing the state educational core standards, state educator licensing policies, and state high school graduation requirements.

Prevention Block Grant

During the 2023 General Legislative Session, House Bill (H.B.) 16 Block Grant Funding for Prevention Programs in Public Education was passed allowing local education agencies (LEAs) to braid grant funding attached to the following sections of Code:

• Title 53G-9-702 - Suicide Prevention
• Title 53G-10-407 - Positive Behaviors Plan – Positive Behavior Specialist Stipend
• Title 53E-3-522 - Substance Abuse Prevention

It is the intent of the block grant to ensure that the requirements of each of the individual programs are honored, while allowing for LEAs to have the flexibility they need to have greater impact on students. As prevention funds are braided, LEAs will have the ability to intentionally target shared risk and protective factors while providing higher leverage, evidence-based practices that will have a greater reach and impact.

H.B. 16 (2023) also allows USBE to distribute excess funds in the Underage Drinking and Substance Abuse Prevention Program Restricted Account to LEAs through the prevention block grant. These funds are only available through the Block Grant.

LEAs who choose not to opt into the Prevention Block Grant Application may still apply for Substance Use Prevention funds within this same application.

Awarded funds are intended for tier 1 and tier 2 prevention activities and may be used for the following:

• Implementation of the comprehensive prevention plan.

Utah Code Section Title 53F-2-525: Block grant funding for prevention programs in public education

• Prevention-focused parent seminars.

Utah Code Section Title 53G-9-703: Parent education -- Mental health -- Bullying -- Safety

• To supplement specific prevention needs identified by the LEA and that can be justified through data.
• Other evidence-based prevention practices authorized by USBE.
• Prevention Science professional learning.
• Supplies and materials related to implementing prevention programs.

Please be aware that Prevention Block Grant funding is primarily meant for Tier 1 and Tier 2 prevention activities. Block Grant Funding is not intended to be used for mental health treatment services for students, or school safety needs (including school guardians and fire detection software). The Hudson-Webber Foundation Grant supports community initiatives in Detroit, focusing on four mission areas: Arts & Culture, Built Environment, Community & Economic Development, and Safe & Just Communities. While the inquiry process is currently paused until January 31, 2025, the foundation encourages potential grantees to connect if their work aligns with its mission. The foundation has invested over $200 million in Detroit nonprofits, emphasizing collaborative efforts to enhance community well-being and economic opportunities.

The Global Raptor Research & Conservation Grant, offered by HawkWatch International, supports crucial projects focused on raptor conservation in high-priority regions such as Latin America, Sub-Saharan Africa, and Southeast Asia. With funding available up to $2,500, the grant encourages applications from local citizens associated with NGOs or universities. Preference is given to projects that address knowledge gaps and have a significant impact on conservation efforts, particularly those led by early-career researchers in low-income countries.

The Community Livability Grant (CLG) Program, funded by Prosper Portland, supports community-based organizations in creating healthy and resilient neighborhoods. Grants, ranging from $10,000 to $300,000, aim to benefit historically underserved communities. Eligible applicants include nonprofits and neighborhood associations in specified districts. Projects should improve access to jobs, support small businesses, and enhance cultural diversity. Applications require a concept plan and must adhere to strict timelines for project initiation and completion.

The Massachusetts Food Ventures Program (MFVP) aims to enhance access to healthy, affordable food and bolster economic opportunities for low to moderate income communities. By providing grants for food ventures in areas like Gateway Cities and rural regions, MFVP supports local agricultural enterprises and aligns with the Massachusetts Local Food Action Plan. Key investment areas include food processing infrastructure and improved distribution systems, ensuring equitable access to fresh local food and promoting healthy eating.

The Liberty Mutual Foundation offers discretionary grants to 501(c)(3) organizations, focusing on those that empower low-income youth and young adults. The foundation prioritizes initiatives that align with its strategic framework and serves communities in Greater Boston and select areas in Washington State. Funding is not available for individuals, religious organizations, or those who have received support in the last 12 months, ensuring resources are directed towards impactful community-driven projects.

The A.C. Ratshesky Foundation Grant for Workforce Development aims to empower economically disadvantaged individuals and families by providing essential educational and vocational services. Prioritizing programs that enhance skills and foster self-sufficiency, the foundation supports initiatives like job placement, training, and employer partnerships. Grants typically range from $10,000 to $25,000, focusing on organizations that can effectively utilize these funds to promote long-term employment and economic security in Metro Boston communities.

Utah Division of Outdoor Recreation

Recognizing the growing importance of outdoor recreation to Utah’s economy and quality of life, the Utah State Legislature established the Utah Division of Outdoor Recreation in 2022. As part of the Utah Department of Natural Resources, the division unites the nation’s first Office of Outdoor Recreation with key state programs, including Utah’s Boating Program, Off-Highway Vehicle (OHV) Program, and outdoor recreation grants and planning. We also work collaboratively with DNR's Division of Law Enforcement Rangers.

Dedicated to fostering a healthy and active lifestyle for all Utahns, the Utah Division of Outdoor Recreation focuses on four key areas: expanding recreational access, promoting safety and education, ensuring responsible stewardship and sustainable visitation, and driving economic growth through outdoor recreation.

Youth Engagement Grants

The Utah Children’s Outdoor Recreation and Education (UCORE) and Outdoor Classroom Grants provide high-quality, outdoor-focused learning experiences to youth ages 6-18 in Utah. This funding aims to teach youth the physical skills that can make outdoor recreation part of a healthy and active lifestyle. UCORE complements the state’s Every Kid Outdoors (EKO) Initiative and hopes to provide more opportunities so no child is left inside.

The Youth Engagement Grants include the Utah Children’s Outdoor Recreation and Education (UCORE) Grants and the Outdoor Classroom Grants. These two grants provide much needed funding for schools, cities, counties, tribes and non-profits to fund programing as well as outdoor learning spaces.The goals of the grants are to:

• Connect Students with Nature
• Teach New Skills
• Foster Stewardship

Projects applying for UCORE or Outdoor Classroom funds should tie into one or more activities included in the Every Kid Outdoors (EKO) Adventure Challenge, which is a year-long effort to provide free, outdoor opportunities to families, schools and after-school programs.  

UCORE and The Outdoor Classroom grant will have two unique applications.

Utah Children’s Outdoor Recreation and Education (UCORE) Grants

Activities Eligible for UCORE

Nature Discovery; Outdoor Adventures; Trail Activities; Water Sports; Winter Sports.

Skill building for some activities is best begun in a controlled environment before youth are ready to practice their skills in a natural or outdoor environment. For example, it may be necessary to teach basic skills for horseback riding in an enclosed corral or rock climbing in a climbing gym before moving the activity into the natural environment. A program is eligible as long as skill building progresses and ends with youth in nature.

The NIHCM Foundation is seeking innovative research proposals that address critical issues in U.S. health care, particularly focusing on drug pricing, provider consolidation, health care delivery, chronic disease management, and the role of artificial intelligence. Projects should aim to improve affordability and quality of care. We welcome submissions from a variety of researchers and organizations, with a preference for studies that can be completed within one year.

The Sharon Center School Millennium Fund, supported by the Berkshire Taconic Community Foundation, aims to enrich the educational experiences of students and teachers at Sharon Center School. Established to foster excellence, the fund supports diverse projects such as independent studies, new programs, extracurricular activities, and professional development for teachers. It prioritizes proposals that engage volunteer efforts and demonstrate additional support, ensuring lasting impact within the community.

The Illinois Habitat Fund offers competitive grants for preserving and maintaining high-quality habitat lands, aimed at not-for-profit organizations and governmental entities. This initiative, part of the Special Wildlife Funds Grant Program, supports projects aligned with the Illinois Wildlife Action Plan. Successful proposals typically demonstrate reasonable costs, feasible methods, and public access, contributing to targeted ecological goals across Forest, Farmland, and Wetland Campaigns.

Dam Removal Grant Program

Eligibility & Purpose:

Any county, city, village, town, tribe, public inland lake protection and rehabilitation district or person who owns the dam may apply. Other entities may apply as the authorized representative of the actual dam owner if the dam owner is willing to allow their dam to be removed. Dam removal grant funds cover costs directly related to planning for the actual removal, implementing the dam removal and the restoration of the impoundment.

Enhancing Gulf Waters through Forested Watershed Restoration - RESTORE Landowner Incentive Program

Introduction

The USDA Forest Service is providing funding to restore water quality and quantity through the implementation of forest management activities. This project is seeking applications for projects focused on restoring pine ecosystems and forest hydrology within the Florida project area.

The program is intended to target lands that have forests, are forests, once had forests or are capable of growing forests. This includes areas that might have been converted to farm or pastureland, burned by forest fires, cut-over, harvested, natural or planted pine stands, pine / hardwood stands or damaged byhurricanes.

The Comprehensive Management Planning for Lakes & Watersheds Grant, offered by the Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources, aims to enhance waterbody management through strategic planning. This grant supports projects that analyze watersheds to set goals for improving and protecting natural resources. Funding is available for creating new management plans or updating existing ones, facilitating informed decisions to address ecological challenges and promote sustainable practices in local communities.

The Outreach and Restoration Grant Program, a collaboration of Chesapeake Bay Trust and various Maryland counties and cities, aims to fund projects that enhance community engagement and environmental stewardship. With funding tracks ranging from $50,000 to $125,000, it supports outreach, behavior change, and restoration initiatives to improve local green spaces and waterways. This program encourages residents to participate actively in restoring their natural resources, fostering a sense of community and responsibility.

The Knight Fund Grant Program, managed by the Community Foundation of Grand Forks, aims to enhance connections between the University of North Dakota and the Downtown area through the University Avenue Corridor. This initiative focuses on improving community engagement, enhancing public spaces, and building on local assets to foster economic mobility and entrepreneurship. The fund specifically targets projects that unite diverse communities and support civic infrastructure, while excluding certain non-program expenses and individual applications.

The Healthy Environment, Healthy Communities Grant Program in the Jones Falls Watershed supports vital environmental action and restoration projects. Originating from a federal consent decree, this initiative aims to enhance the local ecosystem by funding diverse projects that improve natural resources. Eligible applicants include nonprofits, community associations, and local government agencies. While match funding is encouraged, it is not mandatory. Grants typically range from $30,000 to $100,000, with no strict maximum or minimum amounts.

The Arthritis National Research Foundation supports early career researchers in their quest to advance understanding and treatment of arthritis and related autoimmune diseases. Annually, the foundation grants 10 to 20 awards of $125,000 each for two years. Focus areas include osteoarthritis, rheumatoid arthritis, lupus, and more. Eligible investigators must hold an M.D. or Ph.D., be affiliated with a U.S. nonprofit research institution, and commit significant research time. Applications from prior grant recipients or those with certain NIH grants are ineligible.

The Cameron Award supports field research on native rodents across the Americas, encouraging studies in ecology, behavior, physiology, and conservation. It is available to students in MS or PhD programs and postdoctoral researchers in the U.S. Applicants must be ASM members. Funds cover supplies, equipment, and travel, but not salaries or meeting travel. The award aims to enhance understanding of rodent ecology and their impact on ecosystems.

The Exploratory Clinical Trial Grants in Arthritis and Musculoskeletal and Skin Diseases (R61 Clinical Trial Required) aim to support clinical trials that can be completed within a limited timeframe. This funding opportunity encourages a variety of exploratory studies that align with the NIAMS mission, focusing on interventions such as drugs, biologics, devices, and various therapies. Applications are due by 5:00 PM local time of the applicant organization.

The Martin Luther King/César Chavez/Rosa Parks Future Faculty Fellowship at Western Michigan University aims to support academically or economically disadvantaged doctoral candidates in their final dissertation stage. Established in 1986, this fellowship provides financial aid averaging around $33,000 to help students complete their degrees. Recipients must fulfill a three-year teaching or administrative obligation at a postsecondary institution in Michigan, ensuring a commitment to education and community service.
