Scholarship Information

Currently, The Community Foundation administers 75 separate endowed scholarship funds. Established by individuals or organizations, these funds help area students achieve their academic and career-oriented goals.

Scholarships through the Community Foundation support individuals of all ages who reside within the Dan River Region – Danville, VA; Pittsylvania and Halifax counties, VA; and Caswell County, NC. In 2025, we awarded more than $370,000 to 152 students.

Roy G. and Joan F. Gignac Scholarship

Open applications for graduates pursuing technical fields of study, preferably attending the Illinois Institute of Technology.

The Veterans Cemetery Grants program, administered by the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs, provides financial assistance to establish, expand, and improve Veterans cemeteries across the United States. With over $910 million awarded, this initiative ensures that state and tribal governments can maintain these sacred sites, supporting the interment of Veterans and their eligible family members. Roy L. and Mary G. Doss Scholarship

Open applications for graduates of Danville or Pittsylvania County. 

The Raymond C. and Martha S. Suckling Fund Grant, established by the late philanthropist Raymond Suckling, provides annual funding of $500,000 to support programs that uplift low-income residents in Sewickley and nearby areas. Through the Pittsburgh Foundation, grants typically range from $25,000 to $75,000, with the potential for multi-year funding up to $150,000. This initiative seeks to empower communities, especially those facing economic hardships, ensuring that help reaches those in need.

The Joseph Breen Memorial Fellowship supports students to attend the Green Chemistry & Engineering Conference, facilitating their presentation of research. Funded by the Joseph Breen Memorial Fund, it covers up to $2,000 in travel expenses for undergraduate, graduate, or post-doctoral scholars. Two awards are typically granted, ensuring equitable distribution between undergraduates and graduates. Winners must meet the abstract deadline and submit a report summarizing their conference experience before reimbursement.

The Seniors Community Revitalization & Development Fund, supported by the Deaconess Foundation, aims to enhance public health infrastructure for seniors aged 55 and older in the Greater St. Louis area. This initiative focuses on improving transportation, safety, and navigation support for seniors while promoting transparency and accountability. Organizations can apply for grants of up to $30,000 to address these priority areas, ensuring better access to essential services for the aging population.

The Tompkins Scholarship Endowment supports graduates from Traverse City Area Public Schools, emphasizing academic achievement over financial need. Established by the Grand Traverse Regional Community Foundation, this scholarship aims to foster educational opportunities for local students attending public, in-state colleges or universities. The foundation, active since 1992, works to enhance the community by providing significant, potentially renewable scholarships, reflecting its commitment to positive change across the Grand Traverse region.

Traverse City Tourism Hospitality Scholarship Fund (Benzie and Grand Traverse Counties)

Available to graduating high school seniors from Benzie or Grand Traverse Counties, or current NMC students pursuing degrees, industry certifications, or careers in hospitality or tourism-related studies. Preference given to those who are active in school and extracurricular activities, who have demonstrated community responsibility through volunteer efforts, and who have held jobs in the hospitality industry and are excited to continue. Financial need will be considered.

Traverse City Administrators’ Association Scholarship Fund (Central, West, TC High)

Available to a worthy senior who is pursuing a career in education.

One scholarship is awarded annually at each Central, West, and Traverse City High School.

The Community Foundation is home to a variety of scholarships designated to benefit a graduating senior from Traverse City Area Public Schools (TCAPS). .

Tompkins Scholarship Endowment (Central, West, TC High)

The Tompkins Scholarship Endowment was established to provide scholarship awards to benefit graduates from Traverse City Area Public Schools. Awards will be based primarily on academic achievement without consideration of financial need. Individual scholarship awards are intended to be significant in nature and may be renewable for future years. To qualify, students must be attending a public, in-state college/university.

The Ethel Frends Foundation Grant, established in 1997, aims to support canine care and education in California's counties, including Los Angeles and San Diego. It encourages organizations to apply for general operating support and considers small capital expenses. Grants are available for one year, focusing on established organizations rather than start-ups. This funding opportunity is essential for promoting animal welfare and enhancing community programs related to canine care.

The Erin Jergentz Junior Golf Memorial Fund Grant Program provides financial assistance to high school students in Butte and Plumas counties who face barriers to participating in golf. This funding supports the purchase of equipment, gear, lessons, and team events, ensuring that all interested students have the opportunity to engage in the sport despite financial hardships. The program aims to promote inclusivity and support young athletes in their pursuit of golf.
