Since 1991, area residents have been turning to the Community Foundation of Noble County to make their philanthropic giving as effective as possible, as we see it as our mission to serve as a catalyst for positive change. The Community Foundation of Noble County is a public charity 501 (c) 3 entity.

As a group of invested community members, we identify local current and emerging issues and stimulate resources to address those needs, helping our region prepare for the future. We then leverage gifts and bequests from generous donors like you to drive positive change through grants in such areas as arts and culture, education, health and human services, civic affairs and other charitable areas of interest.

Donor Story – Joest, Brian H. Memorial Fund

Brian Henry Joest was born in Lagrange, Indiana in 1957. He grew up on the Atwood family farm that was settled by his ancestors in the mid-1800s. Now a historical Hoosier Homestead, the Atwood Farm provided him with all the outdoor activities possible for a farm boy in northern Indiana. Brian’s love of nature and the outdoors continued throughout his life. After high school, he attended Glen Oaks Community College and then Purdue University, where he earned a Bachelor of Science degree in Agricultural Economics

For decades, Brian went on annual backcountry camping and canoeing trips across the US and Canada. He paddled some of the most beautiful rivers in North America. He took a road trip to remote northern Alaska. He camped out on an active volcano in Guatemala. He explored most of the US National Parks. In his later years, his travels were less rustic but still adventurous as he and his wife, Cindy, checked off many items on his bucket list. They traveled to Paris, Rome, Florence, the Amalfi Coast of Italy, Ireland, and all around the US and Canada.

Brian began his professional career with management positions at Many Glacier Hotel at Glacier National Park in Montana; the Grand Hotel on Mackinac Island, Michigan; the Mountain View Grand Resort in New Hampshire; and Copper Mountain Ski Resort in Colorado. He also worked for Marriott Corporation where he opened new hotels across the Midwest.

Upon the birth of his first child, Brian moved his young family back to Lagrange County so his children could grow up on the Atwood Farm near their family. Brian worked for Life Care Center of Lagrange, was a substitute teacher for the Lakeland School District, and worked for fifteen years for East Noble School Corporation, most recently as an Instructional Assistant for high school students with special needs.

Brian enjoyed doing things for other people and took so much joy in their happiness. His career choices reflected his servant’s heart. He loved working in the hospitality industry and being able to make someone else’s vacation more memorable. He helped the patients and their families at Life Care Center. He spent years making a difference for students in our local schools.

Brian experienced first-hand the unique challenges faced by the families of individuals with special needs. He was a father, stepfather, and step-grandfather to children with different disabilities. He understood the difficulties of navigating support systems and knew there are gaps in these systems that result in unmet needs. At the end of his life, while he was fighting cancer, Brian dreamed of being able to return to the classroom to help special needs students. This was not to be. In 2022, his family created this fund in his honor with the intent of continuing his dream to help improve the lives of individuals with special needs.

The Michigan ACEP: Agricultural Land Easements (ALE) program, administered by the USDA's Natural Resources Conservation Service, aims to protect the agricultural viability of land by preventing nonagricultural uses. It provides financial assistance to eligible partners for purchasing easements that conserve agricultural land, ensuring the long-term sustainability of food supply and environmental quality. Eligible lands include private or Tribal agricultural lands, and NRCS may contribute up to 75% of the easement's fair market value.

The Michigan ACEP: Wetland Reserve Easements (WRE) program, administered by the USDA's Natural Resources Conservation Service, offers year-round applications to restore and enhance wetlands. This initiative provides financial and technical assistance to landowners and Indian tribes for permanent and temporary easements. The program emphasizes ecological benefits, including improved water quality and habitat conservation, while ensuring compliance with income limitations. Priority is given to projects that enhance wildlife habitats, particularly for migratory birds.

The Allen Foundation Grant supports initiatives that enhance human nutrition through research, education, and training. It prioritizes projects that develop nutritional programs, including mandatory nutrition courses in medical schools and sustainable food systems. Eligible applicants must be U.S.-based non-profits or governmental entities with a focus on nutrition education and research. The foundation encourages proposals that include matching funds and has specific criteria for academic research and budgetary self-sufficiency.

Scholarships

Grand Haven Area Community Foundation scholarships are awarded competitively based on criteria set by donors. These criteria could include financial need, the school the applicant is attending, academic achievement, as well as personal or career goals. The Community Foundation has a rigorous internal selection process for each scholarship decision, and each applicant is reviewed in depth, and considered thoroughly.

Our scholarship program is simple. You are able to apply once for all foundation scholarships you may be eligible for. Once your application is submitted, you will be eligible for all those for which you meet the requirement.

Arlyn J. Walt Memorical Scholarship Fund

Arlyn J. Walt was a farmer who worked hard to provide, a husband who loved his wife, Kathy, and a good neighbor - always willing to help a friend. He was a third-generation dairy farmer and was known for his kindness and generosity, his love for God, and his passion for the farm. He was a member of the Farm Bureau and active in the Michigan Milk Producers Association. Kathy hopes to continue to inspire future farmers to enable their work to nourish generations with this scholarship. This scholarship is awarded to students from the Coopersville area interested in studying agriculture.

The Kenneth Dahlberg Endowed Scholarship, offered by Western Michigan University's Department of Political Science, supports undergraduate and graduate students in political science and environmental studies. Established in memory of Professor Kenneth Dahlberg, this annual award of approximately $1,500 emphasizes sustainability in agricultural systems and climate policy. Eligible candidates include students from relevant departments, with preference given to those demonstrating financial need. Nomination for the scholarship can be made by faculty or through self-nomination.

The Michigan Specialty Crop Block Grant Program supports projects to enhance the competitiveness of Michigan's specialty crops, including fruits, vegetables, and horticulture. This initiative provides funding for marketing, research, and education to improve food safety and security while promoting sustainability. Grants up to $125,000 are available, and applicants must demonstrate a broad impact on the community and industry. The program fosters collaboration among various stakeholders to ensure the growth of specialty crops in Michigan.

Casting your Future – UAW Local 668 Scholarship

The International Union, United Automobile, Aerospace and Agricultural Implement Workers of America (UAW) is one of the largest and most diverse unions in North America and is committed to improving the lives of working men and women around the globe. Here in Saginaw, Amalgamated UAW Local 668 proudly represents the hourly employees at the General Motors Saginaw Metal Casting Operations plant and the Knight Facilities Maintenance Group at the same facility.

Our commitment is unwavering to the education of the youth of this country. The success of our middle class is directly dependent on education which provides the skills required to compete in a global economy.

The Joe H. and Rosanne S. Gardner Scholarship, established in 2012, honors the legacy of Dr. Joe and Rosanne Gardner by providing financial support to students pursuing careers in the medical field. This scholarship aims to encourage aspiring health professionals from the Great Lakes Bay Region, particularly those attending Michigan State University, the University of Michigan, or Saginaw Valley State University. With awards typically ranging from $500 to $4,000, the scholarship seeks to empower the next generation of healthcare leaders.

Louis R. & Helen E. Schwartz FFA Agricultural Scholarship

The Louis R. and Helen E. Schwartz FFA Agricultural Scholarship was established to help prepare Saginaw County students for a future in agriculture or an agriculture-related field. Both Lou and Helen Schwartz were raised on farms in Iowa, so they knew from first-hand experience that farming can be a difficult business. They moved to Frankenmuth when Lou opened area S&H Stores in 1962. The stores were sold to Quality Farm and Fleet in 1982.

Scholarships are awarded to students from Saginaw County, Michigan; Lyon County, Minnesota and Muscatine County, Iowa.

The Regenerative Farmer Network Grant (RFNG) supports Michigan farmers in cultivating peer-to-peer networks that focus on regenerative agriculture. Funded by the Michigan Department of Agriculture and Rural Development, the grant fosters collaboration among farmers to enhance sustainable practices. Through shared knowledge and mutual support, RFNG empowers farmers to innovate, build healthier soils, and strengthen their communities, ultimately contributing to a more resilient food system across the state.

Marshall Community Foundation

The Marshall Community Foundation is a partnership of endowed funds established by individuals and organizations. A Board of Trustees, comprised of local community leaders, invest the pooled endowments. Income generated is then available for grants that address charitable needs in our community. Staff and trained volunteers monitor the grants to ensure fulfillment of the grant agreements.

The full circle of philanthropy is poetry in motion. The Foundation receives your gifts, grants to local non-profits, who in turn, give back by providing services to the community. Truly, the Foundation is all about improving the quality of life and making this a better place to live, work and raise a family.

Coury and Kesselring Natural Resources Scholarship

Scholarships awarded to Calhoun County residents seeking to further their education in natural resources or a related field at any Michigan college or university. Applicants may enroll at a two-year institution with plans to complete at a four-year institution. 

Students who receive this scholarship are encouraged to apply for further support in subsequent years however, applicants must submit updated supporting materials. 

The Central Montcalm Community Foundation offers various scholarships aimed at enhancing educational opportunities for local students. Scholarships like the Dr. Victor Beal Jr. Scholarship and the Ronald R. Burkholder Athletic and Educational Scholarship focus on academic achievement and community involvement. With funding sourced from endowed funds, these scholarships support students pursuing further education at colleges and universities, ensuring a lasting impact on the community's youth and fostering a culture of academic excellence and service.

The Michigan Department of Agriculture & Rural Development is offering Value-Add Grants to enhance the state's food systems. This program aims to boost agriculture production, processing, and access to healthy foods. Eligible projects include urban agriculture, food hubs, and educational initiatives. A minimum cash match of 30% is required, and only one proposal per applicant will be accepted. The program seeks to foster innovation and sustainability in Michigan's agricultural landscape.

The True Inspiration Awards, established by Chick-fil-A in 2015, recognizes nonprofit organizations that significantly impact their communities. In 2025, the program will distribute $6 million in grants, ranging from $30,000 to $350,000, to sixteen selected organizations. Categories include Caring for People, Caring through Food, Community, and Caring for our Planet, with a focus on educational initiatives, food security, housing services, and environmental stewardship, honoring the legacy of founder S. Truett Cathy.

The Michigan Clean Diesel Grant Program, managed by the Michigan Department of Environment, Great Lakes, and Energy (EGLE), aims to reduce diesel emissions by funding projects that replace outdated vehicles and equipment with electric alternatives. Eligible applicants include both public and private entities, with a total funding pool of $1,152,965. Individual grants range from $25,000 to $500,000, supporting initiatives that promote environmental sustainability and align with Michigan's decarbonization goals.
