Our Areas of Focus

We continue to carry out our mission through programming centered on survivors’ needs. We strive to fill gaps where those needs aren’t being met, without duplicating existing programs. In order to build a more compassionate, more informed culture rooted in the possibility and promise of healing, we focus on three key areas: Awareness and Community Building, Policy and Advocacy and Healing Programs.

Helping alleviate the effects of secondary trauma for the long-term wellbeing of professionals who support survivors

Building for a System of Care and Compassion

Heal the Healers Grantmaking Program provides critical support for professionals who help survivors heal and seek justice. People working on the frontlines of survivor-centered services are subject to the often overlooked effects of secondary trauma that can emerge as a result of continuous exposure to people who have recently experienced abuse and violence.

The Heal the Healers Grant Fund and Grantee Learning Cohorts provide resources to mitigate the effects of secondary trauma among the practitioners responsible for the earliest stages of survivors’ paths to justice and healing. Creating a safer, more compassionate world for the people who do this work helps lay a foundation for lasting change and a world where every survivor’s healing is prioritized.

The Heal the Healers Fund provides micro-grants of up to $5,000 to nonprofit, Tribal, or governmental organizations supporting survivors for training, small capital projects, or organizational activities.

Areas of Support

The Joyful Heart Foundation has established the following guidelines for its Heal the Healers Fund grants to support those working directly with survivors in the following areas.

• Training and/or program development on self-care practices such as training in trauma-informed yoga, breathwork, somatic therapy, etc.
• Small capital items and equipment that specifically allow staff and volunteers to address their self care needs such as daylight lamps for staff or new furniture for a break room.
• Staff activities to build and support connections between colleagues such as, trust building experiences, monthly pizza nights, or bagel Fridays.
• Or any combination of the above. 

In addition to the financial support, grantees will also be invited to join a peer learning community cohort that includes:

• Opportunities to amplify their fellowship/cohort experiences to inspire others in the field
• Virtual peer-to-peer networking opportunities
• Virtual training/presentations by leading healers, therapists and other professionals with expertise in cutting edge vicarious trauma, empowerment, leadership and therapeutic modalities

The Kronkosky Charitable Foundation Grant focuses on supporting children and youth by preventing child abuse, aiding victims of trafficking, and enhancing foster care programs. The foundation also emphasizes character development and enrichment opportunities for young individuals. With a commitment to fostering vibrant communities, it funds organizations that provide essential resources to vulnerable populations while promoting artistic and cultural initiatives.

The Charity Ball Association of San Antonio, Inc. provides funding to enhance children's lives in Bexar County. With over $29 million distributed to nonprofit agencies, the organization focuses on urgent needs for children aged 0-18. Grants support well-defined projects that address immediate concerns, requiring compliance with strict funding policies. Agencies must demonstrate a clear impact on children's well-being and adhere to reporting requirements to ensure accountability and effective use of resources.

The Charity Ball Association of San Antonio provides essential funding to support the well-being of children in Bexar County. Through a rigorous selection process, they evaluate grant applications to ensure funds are allocated efficiently. Their Annual Grant Funding Process invites local charities to submit proposals for projects that address critical needs. With a focus on transparency and compliance, the Association aims to enhance the quality of life for children in the community.

The Beasley Foundation Grant supports nonprofit organizations in Dallas that focus on critical areas such as education, healthcare, substance abuse prevention, and mental health. To apply, organizations must have 501c3 status and align with the foundation's mission. The application process includes creating a login, submitting a Letter of Inquiry, and, if accepted, completing a full proposal. The foundation reviews applications quarterly, ensuring support for initiatives that make a positive impact in the community.

The Dale Jr. Foundation, founded by NASCAR driver Dale Earnhardt Jr., has raised over $8 million since 2007 to support various charities focusing on youth and underprivileged communities. The foundation emphasizes empowerment, education, wellness, hunger relief, and hope, aiming to provide resources that enhance confidence and opportunities for children facing hardships. Through fundraising efforts and partnerships with organizations like Make-A-Wish, the foundation strives to positively impact lives and foster a sense of normalcy among children in need.

The Grants for Coordination of Tribal Temporary Assistance for Needy Families (TANF) and Child Welfare Services aim to support tribal families at risk of abuse or neglect. This funding encourages innovative projects that enhance case management, supportive services, and prevention strategies. Eligible applicants include federally recognized tribal governments and organizations. ACF prioritizes sustainable systems changes, enabling lasting improvements in the coordination of TANF and child welfare programs to better serve vulnerable tribal families.

The JLSA Community Grant Program, operated by the Junior League of San Antonio, aims to support organizations and initiatives that align with its mission of promoting voluntarism and improving the community. Grants are awarded to partners involved in community placements or Done-in-a-Day projects, enhancing their capacity to meet local needs. Eligible projects focus on measurable outcomes in areas such as education, arts, and health, while ineligible expenses include general operating costs, endowments, and fundraising activities.

The Done-In-A-Day Grants by the Junior League of San Antonio empower local organizations by providing volunteer support for various projects. These projects typically require 4-10 volunteers and can be completed in 3-8 hours. Proposals are accepted year-round, and it's essential to submit a project proposal at least 30 days in advance. This initiative aims to advance women's leadership while making a meaningful impact in the community through collaborative volunteer efforts.

The Najim Family Foundation Grant aims to support 501(c)(3) organizations serving children in the Greater San Antonio area. Grants focus on vital areas such as food, shelter, clothing, education, and mental health. First-time applicants must consult with the Grant Manager and meet specific eligibility criteria. The Foundation prioritizes organizations with a proven operational history of at least three years and restricts funding for various purposes, ensuring support is directed to the most pressing needs of children.

The In-N-Out Burger Foundation supports organizations that aid children and youth affected by abuse and neglect, offering grants ranging from $5,000 to $50,000. Eligible nonprofits must be 501(c)(3) registered, operational for at least two years, and demonstrate a commitment to the foundation's mission. Applications are considered for traditional, capital, and program support, focusing on sustainable solutions and clear objectives. Organizations must operate in areas with In-N-Out Burger locations to qualify.

The Child Well-Being Grant Program, established by the Doris Duke Foundation, focuses on promoting the healthy development of children and preventing abuse. With a commitment to addressing systemic inequities, the program supports initiatives that strengthen social service systems and foster partnerships to enhance access to services. It prioritizes funding for projects that encourage community-based interventions and the development of future leaders dedicated to improving child welfare, ensuring all children have the opportunity to thrive in safe and supportive environments.

The Hoglund Foundation Grant focuses on enhancing the lives of at-risk children and families in Dallas, Texas. It supports organizations providing family stability and child abuse prevention, alongside educational initiatives that yield data-driven results. Eligible applicants must be 501(c)(3) organizations that demonstrate innovative problem-solving and a commitment to collaboration. The foundation prioritizes programs that serve underfunded areas, emphasizing the importance of sound financial management and impactful community engagement.

The Stout Foundation Grant supports organizations aligned with the values of its founder, Mr. Stout. Grants are awarded exclusively to entities with 501(c)(3) tax-exempt status and focus on charitable, educational, and scientific purposes. Preference is given to organizations with low overhead costs and those located in areas frequented by Foundation members. Grants up to $15,000 can be used for general operating or program support. Eligible applicants must be 501(c)(3) nonprofits with a minimum of 12 months operating history. The Topfer Family Foundation Grant aims to empower individuals by providing essential resources and support in various program areas, including child abuse prevention, youth enrichment, job training, children's health, and aging in place. This grant is focused on fostering self-sufficiency through initiatives that promote education, practical life skills, and access to healthcare. The foundation prioritizes organizations in the greater Austin, Chicago, Denver, and Broward County areas, ensuring that funds directly benefit local communities.

The Institutional Challenge Grant aims to foster collaborative research by requiring institutions to adapt their policies and enhance capacities for meaningful partnerships. It encourages applications from diverse leadership teams in youth-serving areas, focusing on addressing inequalities in youth outcomes. The grant outlines four key goals: strengthening partnerships, pursuing a joint research agenda, facilitating institutional change, and enhancing collaborative capacities for producing actionable research evidence.
