National Housing Innovation Grant Competition

Home is foundational. It’s where we plant roots, raise and care for our families, and build community bonds. Yet in every corner of the country, millions of people of all ages and backgrounds need a home they can afford.

Wells Fargo is meeting this moment with a powerful grant opportunity. Together with Enterprise, Wells Fargo has launched the third iteration of the Housing Affordability Breakthrough Challenge. The 2026 cycle of the housing innovation competition will identify and propel proven, ready-to-scale solutions that transform current practices and increase housing choice and access.

Eligible applicants will compete for five individual grants of $2 million to advance their innovation and drive meaningful, systems-level change in the housing and adjacent industries. Winners will gain access to mentorship and coaching from industry leaders and experts and join a powerful network of Breakthrough Challenge innovators.

Focus Areas

This third cycle of the Housing Affordability Breakthrough Challenge aims to meet the nation’s affordable housing challenges across all types of communities: Native, rural, suburban, tribal, and urban.

Proposals must encompass one or more of three focus areas:

• Design and Construction
• Finance
• Service Delivery and Programs

Applicants will be asked to show how their proof of concept or pilot program has achieved clear outcomes and success, and provide a clear pathway to expanding the innovation’s reach and impact

Round 1: Criteria and Scoring

Your innovation must meet the criteria below to advance to the official scoring stage.

Location

Priority scoring will be given to applications from entities that are based in – or whose innovations are designed for – one or more of these 28 states, plus D.C.:

Affordability

Innovations must serve residents at these income levels:

• Rental: 80% AMI or below
• Homeownership: 120% AMI or below
• Workforce housing: 120% AMI or below

The Southern SARE program is inviting pre-proposals for innovative Systems Research Projects and Education Activities that promote sustainable agriculture. With funding ranging from $50,000 to $400,000, this initiative aims to address pressing agricultural issues in the Southern region, including Alabama, Florida, and Texas. Proposals should align with the objectives outlined in the 1990 Farm Bill, focusing on enhancing environmental quality, economic viability, and quality of life in farming communities.

The Apache Corporation Tree Grant Program is dedicated to large-scale conservation efforts by providing trees to nonprofit organizations and government agencies in the U.S. Since 2005, it has donated over 5 million trees, enhancing public greenspaces and supporting wildlife habitats. Eligible applicants must be 501(c)(3) organizations or government entities based in states where Apache operates. This initiative not only beautifies communities but also plays a vital role in environmental stewardship.

The Robert J. Kleberg, Jr. and Helen C. Kleberg Foundation grants are aimed at supporting wildlife conservation and animal science initiatives primarily in South Texas. The Foundation prioritizes projects that fill critical knowledge gaps through research or habitat restoration. Eligible organizations include IRS-registered, tax-exempt entities. The Foundation has awarded over $391 million since its inception, with a focus on impactful projects. Notably, capital projects require prior discussions with Foundation staff and at least 50% funding from other sources.

The Environment Pillar Award by Honda supports nonprofit organizations and schools in the U.S. focused on sustainability. Grants aim to reduce environmental impact through programs in decarbonization, clean energy, and efficient resource use. Eligible projects must align with Honda's mission and primarily benefit communities where Honda associates live and work. Organizations can apply for up to two grants, provided they meet specific eligibility criteria, including tax-exempt status under the IRS.

The Texas Water Development Fund (DFund) offers state-funded loans for a variety of infrastructure projects, including water supply and flood control initiatives. Eligible applicants include political subdivisions and nonprofit water supply corporations. The program streamlines funding by allowing multiple project components to be included in one loan. As of FY 2020, approximately $2.7 billion has been committed, with applications requiring a pre-application conference to discuss eligibility and project details.

The Texas Parks and Wildlife Department (TPWD) is inviting proposals for its Wildlife Research Grant program, offering over $1,000,000 to support critical wildlife conservation research. Eligible applicants include universities and non-profit organizations, with a required 25% matching funds. Proposals must address specific research priorities, including Javelina Ecology and Wild Turkey Recruitment. Projects should align with federal aid guidelines, focusing on restoring and managing native wildlife and habitats. Unsolicited proposals outside the specified topics will not be considered.

The Monarch Garden Grants program, initiated by the Native Plant Society of Texas, aims to support the creation of Monarch habitats across Texas by providing small grants to schools and nature centers. These grants focus on developing demonstration gardens and Waystations using native plants essential for Monarch conservation. With funding from various sources, including individual donations and partnerships, this initiative seeks to educate the public about the importance of Monarchs and their native plant habitats.

The Texas Specialty Crop Block Grant Program aims to enhance the competitiveness of specialty crops through marketing, research, and development efforts. The program supports projects addressing food safety, nutrition, plant health, and expanding access to these crops. By funding proposals that demonstrate measurable impacts on the specialty crop industry and the public, this initiative seeks to foster growth and adaptability in a challenging agricultural landscape.

The Texas A&M Forest Service's Community Forestry Grants Program aims to enhance urban and community forestry across Texas by funding Municipal Forester positions. These grants support cities in establishing qualified foresters to promote tree management, community engagement, and policy development. By fostering sustainable practices, this initiative contributes to the health and resilience of local ecosystems, ultimately benefiting both the environment and the communities they serve.

The Community Forestry Grants Program: Tree Planting, initiated by Texas A&M Forest Service, aims to enhance urban and community tree canopy coverage across Texas. This program invites proposals for 2026 to foster sustainable forestry practices, improving public health and environmental conditions. By addressing urban sustainability challenges highlighted in the Texas Forest Action Plan, such as climate and water quality, communities can secure funding to implement impactful tree planting initiatives, ultimately contributing to a greener, more resilient future.
