Best Capacity Building Grants for Nonprofits

The 15 and the Mahomies Foundation Grants aim to enhance the lives of children by supporting health, wellness, and community initiatives. This private foundation seeks to fund 501(c)(3) non-profit organizations, focusing on charitable causes. Grant requests are reviewed quarterly, and applicants must meet eligibility criteria. However, the foundation does not accept applications from individuals or for non-charitable items such as autographs or game tickets.

United Way Funding Process

United Way Alliance of the Mid-Ohio Valley grants is how we invest local dollars in our communities to address specific community-centered issues. Funding decisions are made through an annual competitive application process.

Our grants are invested in high-performing nonprofit organizations that provide programs and services aligned with our four strategic priority areas of Education, Income (Financial Stability), Safety Net, and Health. Awardees help to improve community conditions across our regional footprint in the counties we serve: Calhoun, Jackson, Pleasants, Ritchie, Roane, Wood, and Wirt in WV, Athens, and Washington Counties in OH.

The Little Falls/Morrison County Grant, established by the Laura Jane Musser Fund, aims to enhance community access and sustainability through support for nonprofit organizations in Morrison County, MN. Eligible organizations can apply for General Operating Support or Small Grants, with funding up to $10,000 for various projects. The grants prioritize measurable impacts in community engagement and organizational strength, ensuring that assistance is directed towards fostering meaningful community improvements.

The Minnie B. Leonette Family Foundation, established in 1994, focuses on innovative solutions for children and seniors in Northern Nevada. It supports projects that improve quality of life, emphasizing creativity and compassion. The Foundation prioritizes grants for private non-profits and public agencies that address the needs of those who may not qualify for public aid, aiming for sustainable positive change. Grants are typically one year but may be renewed based on satisfactory progress.

The purpose of this program is to enhance, expand, or modify existing maternal health outcome initiatives that prioritize diagnoses identified as severe obstetric complications (SOCs) and reduce SOCs (not present on admission that occur during the current delivery encounter), address gaps in maternal health outcomes, and strengthen community-based systems to ensure high-quality preventive, primary, and specialty services for pregnant or postpartum women. 

The Athens Federal Foundation Grant supports charitable initiatives in East Tennessee, particularly in Bradley, McMinn, Meigs, Monroe, and Polk counties. Established in 2009 with a $1 million stock contribution and $100,000 in cash, the Foundation prioritizes affordable housing, job training, and educational initiatives for the economically disadvantaged. Non-profit organizations that are tax-exempt under Section 501c(3) are eligible to apply, while political and fraternal organizations are excluded.

The Seeding Wayne County Grant Program, operated by Wayne Metropolitan Community Action Agency, aims to combat poverty by providing funding to grassroots organizations in Wayne County. With a total allocation of $550,000 for the fiscal year 2026, grants range from $1,000 to $7,500. Eligible organizations must be 501(c)(3) entities serving low-income residents and can apply for funding for direct services in areas such as education, health, and nutrition.

The Robert and Virginia Stanton Endowment Grant, established in 1994, prioritizes funding for 501(c)3 nonprofit organizations serving Monterey County. This grant emphasizes one-time special or capital projects that enhance community benefit, particularly in arts, education, and public infrastructure. Notable priorities include support for the restoration of buildings designed by Robert Stanton and various cultural institutions. In 2025, only invited agencies will be considered, ensuring focused contributions to impactful community initiatives.

The District of Columbia Department of Energy and Environment (DOEE) aims to replace diesel vehicles with zero-emission equivalents to enhance community health. The grant supports replacing medium- and heavy-duty vehicles registered in the District, with available funding totaling $2,396,457. Non-governmental organizations, faith-based groups, universities, and private enterprises are encouraged to apply for rebates on vehicle replacement costs, promoting a cleaner environment and reduced NOx emissions.

The US Dept. of Health & Human Services, through the Eunice Kennedy Shriver National Institute of Child Health and Human Development, is set to announce a funding opportunity focused on HIV research for pediatric and maternal populations. This initiative aims to foster innovative clinical trials addressing critical research areas in HIV, inviting collaborations from experts in various fields. Applications are not currently solicited, but potential applicants are encouraged to prepare for this opportunity.

The Greater Lawrence Community Fund Grant provides essential program support for nonprofit organizations in Lawrence, Methuen, Andover, and North Andover, focusing on hunger, clothing, shelter, and education. The grant favors collaborative projects and evaluates proposals based on documented needs, organizational capacity, and potential impacts. Eligible applicants must be 501(c)(3) tax-exempt organizations committed to non-discrimination. Grants are typically for specific programs that can be assessed within a year, supporting small organizations as needed.

Community Foundation of Morgan County

The Community Foundation of Morgan County (CFMC) was founded on January 5, 2000, thanks to a grant from Lilly Endowment. CFMC was originally a partnership with the Mooresville Community Foundation and Morgan County Community Foundation. The historic Academy Building on the Newby Campus in Mooresville was CFMC’s original location.

After 25 years of service, the Community Foundation of Morgan County continues to grow our community endowment for purposes of enhancing the lives of all Morgan County citizens, now and for those in the future. We address community needs through grantmaking, including scholarships, connect donors to local needs, and provide leadership on key community issues.

Lilly Endowment GIFT IX Community Project Grant

The Community Foundation of Morgan County is committed to strengthening the long-term vitality of our community by addressing critical needs. The Community Project Grant Program, funded by Lilly Endowment Gift IX, provides strategic funding opportunities for transformative initiatives aligned with three key pillars:

• Affordable Housing- Temporary & Permanent
• Childcare Access & Affordability
• Food Insecurity & Poverty Relief

Up to $500,000 in funding is available per pillar to support high-impact, collaborative, and sustainable solutions that directly benefit residents of Morgan County.

The Bill Rowles Youth Foundation Fund, managed by the Toledo Community Foundation, focuses on enhancing the lives of young people under 21 in northwest Ohio. It prioritizes grants to organizations that assist youth facing challenges such as juvenile justice system involvement or behavioral issues. Government agencies are ineligible, and preference is given to Wood County organizations. This initiative aims to foster positive development and support for at-risk youth in the community.

The Women in Health Collaborative Fund, launched by the Women’s Fund of Central Indiana, empowers women in healthcare to make impactful grant decisions. Focused on improving health outcomes for women and girls, the initiative invites 501(c)(3) nonprofits with majority female boards to seek funding, prioritizing reproductive health and the mental health of Black girls. Grants of up to $50,000 will be awarded based on community-driven voting, fostering innovative and collaborative approaches to pressing health issues.

The Florida Department of Environmental Protection offers Resilient Florida Implementation Grants to support local governments and special districts in infrastructure projects addressing risks from vulnerability assessments. This funding aims to enhance the protection and restoration of Florida's water resources, especially against flooding and storm surge. Eligible entities include counties, municipalities, and water management authorities. Proposals submitted will be public records, with no guarantee of funding upon submission.

The Garden Club of America Board of Associates Centennial Pollinator Fellowship offers funding for research on pollinator decline, specifically targeting bees, bats, butterflies, and moths. This fellowship, established in 2013, supports graduate students in U.S. institutions with annual funding typically around $4,000. It aims to enhance knowledge in pollinator science while fostering a new generation of scientists dedicated to conservation. Recipients may reapply for additional funding in subsequent years.

The Sustainable Transportation Planning Grants support local and regional planning efforts aimed at enhancing active transportation, safe routes to schools, and reducing greenhouse gas emissions by 2030 and 2050. With a total funding of $29.5 million, these competitive grants also include subcategories for climate adaptation planning and strategic partnerships. Eligible projects must align with state goals and contribute to comprehensive transportation strategies, with grant amounts ranging from $50,000 to $700,000.

Community Change Grants

We understand that many issues can be best addressed when communities work together, pooling resources and expertise, and developing collaborative and creative solutions. By funding cross-organizational initiatives, we can help organizations broaden their outlook and their reach.

Through its Community Change funding, the Peter & Elizabeth Tower Foundation seeks to forge equitable relationships and more just power dynamics among different constituencies relating to young people and their families affected by intellectual disabilities, learning disabilities, mental health challenges, and/or substance use disorders.

Community Change projects must be aligned with the Tower Foundation’s goals and involve multiple, diverse stakeholders – especially those most directly harmed by existing conditions and practices – working together towards common ends.

Such work can include (but is not limited to) initiatives that:

• challenge existing beliefs, assumptions, and entrenched practices involving these populations;
• supplement, coordinate, or more effectively resource relevant continuums of care;
• employ creative approaches to workforce recruitment and development that enhance the availability of and access to high-quality, culturally relevant services;
• support coalitions and networks built on community assets; and/or
• employ innovative approaches to creating equitable relationships and practices among elements within and across systems.

The strongest projects will incorporate most, if not all, elements of the Foundation’s values.

What Does the Foundation Want to Accomplish?

For each of the populations it supports, the Foundation has identified a set of grantmaking goals. Community Change grants should promote one or more of these goals:

• Intellectual Disabilities
• Children with intellectual disabilities are identified early and receive services that meet their evolving needs.
• Young people with intellectual disabilities are engaged in meaningful social, vocational, and educational pursuits.
• Families understand intellectual disabilities and secure needed supports.
• Communities embrace persons with intellectual disabilities and provide them with a full-range of supports and opportunities to engage in community life.
• Learning Disabilities
• Children with learning disabilities are identified early, diagnosed and connected to services that meet their on-going individual needs.
• Youth with learning disabilities understand how they learn and pursue resources that support them accordingly.
• Young adults are confident and do not view their learning disability as a liability.
• Young adults with learning disabilities are ready for work and/or educational pursuits.
• Families are informed about learning disabilities and are able to identify and navigate available services.
• Communities value persons with learning disabilities and accommodate their needs.
• Mental Health
• Stigma related to mental illness is eliminated.
• Children with social, emotional, and behavioral challenges are identified early and connected to appropriate services.
• Young people with mental health challenges understand and manage their conditions and behaviors.
• Families understand mental health challenges and help members live productive lives.
• Communities offer meaningful opportunities and appropriate support to young people with mental health challenges and their families.
• Substance Use Disorders
• Community members understand the prevalence and harmful effects of alcohol and drugs, and work to address them.
• Resources for substance abuse prevention, treatment, and recovery are readily available.
• Families provide safe environments that support healthy choices about alcohol and drugs.
• Young people make healthy choices about alcohol and drugs.

The Enhancement Design and Implementation Block Grant, administered by Watersheds United Vermont (WUV), supports critical water quality enhancement projects. Proposals for preliminary and final designs, as well as implementation, are welcome. This initiative is funded by the Vermont Department of Environmental Conservation’s Clean Water Initiative Program. No match is required, although voluntary leverage is appreciated for larger projects, allowing the funding to be utilized as match for other sources.

The Scrap Tire Management Grant Program in Nebraska provides funding to support various scrap tire projects, including the purchase of tire-derived products and equipment for processing. Eligible applicants include private and non-profit organizations, as well as political subdivisions. The program aims to enhance recycling efforts and reduce waste, ultimately benefiting the environment and local communities. Projects should be designed to improve the management and utilization of scrap tires in practical and innovative ways.

The Jewish Women’s Foundation of New Jersey (JWF) aims to uplift women and girls through collective grantmaking, enhancing community quality of life. The Spring Grant Cycle invites 501(c)3 organizations to submit Letters of Intent for funding programs aligned with JWF's mission. Focused on New Jersey counties, JWF prioritizes initiatives that address women's challenges and promote social change, rejecting grants for individuals or political purposes.

The Longleaf Landscape Stewardship Fund Grant, managed by the National Fish and Wildlife Foundation (NFWF), provides funding for projects aimed at restoring and conserving longleaf pine and bottomland hardwood forests. With approximately $30 million available for 2024, grants range from $250,000 to $3,000,000. This initiative, supported by various federal and private entities, emphasizes the importance of ecological preservation and sustainable land management practices.

The Anthony F. Cordeiro Charitable Foundation Grant aims to support nonprofit organizations in southeastern Massachusetts and Rhode Island that enhance the lives of families and children. Established in 2017, the foundation focuses on providing essential resources such as health services, mental health support, food, and shelter. Eligible applicants include 501(c)(3) organizations that align with the foundation's mission, ensuring no discrimination in hiring or service provision.

Hennepin County offers up to $106,000 in Aquatic Invasive Species Prevention Grants to support local governments and organizations in projects aimed at preventing the spread of aquatic invasive species. Typical awards range from $5,000 to $25,000, with a maximum of $50,000 available. Eligible recipients include local government agencies, nonprofits, and for-profit companies engaged in activities such as early detection, education, and research to combat invasive species.

The Children's Trust Community Engagement Grant aims to enhance existing programs that support children and families in Miami-Dade County. This funding opportunity encourages organizations to address high-need populations and promote citizen engagement and advocacy. Nonprofits not currently funded by The Children's Trust can apply for grants typically under $20,000 to develop collaborative projects that foster community involvement. The grant focuses on improving access to essential services and empowering local communities.
