The Catalysis program is part of the Chemical Process Systems cluster, which also includes:

• the Electrochemical Systems program;
• the Interfacial Engineering program; and
• the Process Systems, Reaction Engineering, and Molecular Thermodynamics program.

The goals of the Catalysis program are to increase fundamental understanding in catalytic engineering science and to advance the development of catalysts and catalytic reactions that are beneficial to society. Research should focus on critical challenges and opportunities in both new and proven catalysis technologies. Areas of emphasis may include novel catalyst compositions, structures, operating environment, data science tools, theory, and modeling – preferably in various combinations as dictated by the specific reaction and related knowledge and technology gaps. Target applications include fuels, specialty and bulk chemicals, environmental catalysis, biomass conversion to fuels and chemicals, greenhouse gas mitigation, recycling of waste materials, generation of solar hydrogen, as well as efficient routes to energy utilization.

Heterogeneous catalysis represents the main thrust of the program. Proposals related to both gas-solid and liquid-solid heterogeneous catalysis are welcome, as are proposals that incorporate concepts from homogeneous catalysis. Recent research trends have highlighted the need for evaluation of catalyst performance and properties under working conditions, especially as supported by advanced in situ and in operando characterization methods. Catalyst synthesizability and stability present additional research opportunities given the harsh operating environments of many catalytic processes.

The Environmental Engineering program is part of the Environmental Engineering and Sustainability cluster, which also includes

• The Nanoscale Interactions program; and
• The Environmental Sustainability program.

Environmental engineering is an interdisciplinary field that applies chemical, biological, and physical scientific principles to protect human and ecological health. The goal of the Environmental Engineering program is to support potentially transformative fundamental research that applies scientific and engineering principles to

• Prevent, minimize, or re-use solid, liquid, and gaseous discharges of pollution to soil, water, and air by closing resource loops or through other measures;
• Mitigate the ecological and human-health impacts of such releases by smart/adaptive/reactive amendments or manipulation of the environment, and
• Remediate polluted environments through engineered chemical, biological, and/or geo-physical processes.

Integral to achieving these goals is a fundamental understanding of the transport and biogeochemical reactivity of pollutants in the environment. Therefore, research on environmental micro/biology, environmental chemistry, and environmental geophysics may be relevant providing the research has a clear objective of protecting human and ecological health.

Major areas of interest include (but are not limited to):

• Building a future without pollution or waste: Investigation of innovative biogeochemical processes that prevent or minimize the production of waste; waste valorization and other research that will lead to new technologies to extract resources from waste streams to close the resource loop.
• Sustainable supply and protection of water: Investigation of innovative biogeochemical processes that remove, biologically or chemically transform, and/or prevent the release of contaminants in surface and groundwater; innovative processes for recovery of water, nutrients, and other resources from wastewater, saline water, or brines; innovative approaches to smart and adaptive management of surface water, groundwater, and urban watersheds and storm water to maintain/improve quality and prevent downstream impacts from nutrients and other water constituents.
• Environmental chemistry, fate, and transport of nutrients and contaminants of emerging concern in air, water, soils, and sediments:Investigation of transport and biogeochemical reactivity in the environment; environmental forensics to identify sources and reaction pathways; field- and laboratory scale experimental research that bridges gaps between data and predictions from molecular, continuum, and field-scale modeling.
• Environmental engineering of the built environment: Research to understand the biogeochemical reactivity of the built environment with the goal of enhancing and improving human and ecological health; research that will lead to new technologies to improve outdoor and indoor air quality; research to understand how drinking water and wastewater chemical characteristics and microbial community structure impact or are affected by water quality and human health.

Where to submit proposals with different areas of focus:

• Proposals with a scientific focus on chemical or physical separation processes (for example, materials or processes for reverse osmosis, membrane distillation, and hypo-filtration) should be submitted to the Interfacial Engineering program (CBET 1417).
• Proposals that seek to advance fundamental and quantitative understanding of the behaviors of nanomaterials and nanosystems should be submitted to the Nanoscale Interactions program (CBET 1179).
• Proposals focused on in vitro molecular-level environmental chemistry research should be submitted to Environmental Chemical Sciences program (CHE-ECS 6882).
• Proposals focusing on industrial ecology, green engineering, and ecological/earth systems engineering should be submitted to the Environmental Sustainability program (CBET 7643).
• Proposals whose main research focus is on materials development, sensors, or environmental monitoring that do not seek to understand biogeochemical reactivity mechanisms or treatment efficiency are not encouraged and may be returned without review.

Innovative proposals outside of these specific interest areas may be considered. However, prior to submission, it is recommended that the PI contact the program director to avoid the possibility of the proposal being returned without review.

INFORMATION COMMON TO MOST CBET PROGRAMS

Proposals should address the novelty and/orpotentially transformative natureof the proposed work compared to previous work in the field. Also, it is important to address why the proposed work is important in terms of engineering science, as well as to also project the potential impact on society and/or industry of success in the research. The novelty or potentially transformative nature of the research should be included, as a minimum, in the Project Summary of each proposal.

The duration of unsolicited proposal awards in CBET is generally up to three years. Single-investigator award budgets typically include support for one graduate student (or equivalent) and up to one month of PI time per year(awards for multiple investigator projects are typically larger). Proposal budgets that are much larger than typical should be discussed with the program director prior to submission. Proposers can view budget amounts and other information from recent awards made by this program via the “What Has Been Funded (Recent Awards Made Through This Program, with Abstracts)” link towards the bottom of this page.

Faculty Early Career Development (CAREER )program proposals are strongly encouraged. Award duration is five years. The submission deadline for Engineering CAREER proposals is in July every year. Learn more in the CAREER program description.

About UFAW

The Universities Federation for Animal Welfare (UFAW) is an independent registered charity that works with the animal welfare science community worldwide to develop and promote improvements in the welfare of animals through scientific and educational activity.

UFAW has long promoted and supported a scientific approach aimed at finding ways to gain insight into what matters to animals, assessing their welfare and improving the quality of their lives through practical developments in all aspects of their care.

Purpose

Amateur Radio Digital Communications (ARDC) is a California-based foundation with roots in amateur radio and the technology of internet communication. Our mission is to support, promote, and enhance digital communication and broader communication science and technology, to promote amateur radio, scientific research, experimentation, education, development, open access, and innovation in information and communication technology.

Project Apis m.'s mission Is to fund and direct research to enhance the health and vitality of honey bee colonies while improving crop production.

FAQ's & Research Proposal Guidelines for Applicants

Since its inception in 2006, Project Apis m. has infused over $10 million into bee research and programs in the USA and Canada, including more than 160 projects involving research institutions throughout North America. We have brought new technologies to honey bee health research, discovered new pathogens, developed Best Management Practices programs, and are supporting long-term stock improvement. We are recipients of grants from the North Dakota Department of Agriculture, the California Department of Food and Agriculture (CDFA), and USDA-APHIS. Project Apis m. is the largest non-governmental, non-profit bee research funding organization in North America.

Thank you for your interest in submitting a research proposal to Project Apis m. We are funded largely by beekeepers and farmers, and dedicated to enhancing the health of honey bees, thereby improving crop production. Proposals are expected to clearly state how they fulfill our mission. Proposals and the review process are kept confidential. We offer the following frequently asked questions to help you submit a research proposal to Project Apis m. for project funding. 

Proposals are reviewed by the executive director, scientific advisory board, ad-hoc reviewers, and a board of directors. Projects must clearly meet the criteria outlined in the Request for Proposals or address PAm’s mission. Please note proposals must be scientifically sound (i.e., short format USDA or NSF grants without all the extra forms). Funding decisions are primarily based on an overall evaluation, which includes the following review criteria:

• Focus on solving problems facing the beekeeping industry in either the short or long term.
• Relevance to bee health, nutrition, productivity, crop pollination                                        
• Likelihood of obtaining practical/usable results for the beekeeping industry
• Project strengths and weaknesses    
• Inclusion of unique strategies, sustainable solutions, or establishment of knowledge that will lead to sustainable solutions in the long-term                                       
• Use of adequate experimental approaches, inclusion of logically linked experiments and project feasibility
• Identification of risks and adequate solutions (e.g., potential pitfalls and solutions)
• Likelihood of success (PIs credibility, record of success, experience with techniques, etc.)
• Adequate indication that PI(s) will communicate their findings to commercial beekeepers.
• Economical and adequate budget for proposed research

What type of research projects does Project Apis m. fund?

• pests and disease prevention and control,
• honey bee nutrition,
• impacts of pesticides on bees, and
• long-term honey bee stock improvement.

We are looking for projects that fill the gaps in honey bee research, and benefit honey bees and agriculture in the USA and Canada. The reviewers will ask questions that ensure the commercial beekeeping community will benefit from the research and its application. For example, PAm seeks research projects that will:

• Enhance the economic viability of pollination businesses.
• Provide practical solutions for managed colonies.
• Yield results that can be efficiently transferred into field practice.
• Provide an excellent rate of return for beekeepers and farmers.

How much does PAm fund?

PAm funding is dependent on the project and the goals. We have funded from $5,000 – $200,000. Typically, proposals are in the range from $20,000 to $40,000. As you might imagine, the higher the funding request, the more scrutiny administered in the proposal review. We offer several initiative RFPs, in addition to accepting proposals outside those periods, and do our best to coordinate funding with other industry sources to partner and avoid duplication.  

RFP: Project Apis m. and the National Honey Board ​are requesting research proposals to support ​and enhance honey bee health. 

Background

U.S. Honey yield per colony is decreasing while colony losses are increasing, as many crops dependent on pollination services continue to expand. Winter honey bee colony losses in the United States were reported at 37.7% during 2019. Colony losses are often attributed to pathogens, parasites, pesticides, hive management (queen mating, genetics, maintenance), climate, and available nutrition. United States honey yield per colony averaged 54.4 pounds in 2018, down 2% from 55.5 pounds in 2017. (www.nass.usda.gov) Sustainable beekeeping is dependent on maximizing outputs (colony health, colony numbers, pollination contracts, honey production, profitability) while minimizing the inputs (time, money, personnel). A sustainable beekeeping industry contributes to a more sustainable agricultural landscape through a stable supply of bees for crop pollination. Therefore, PAm is requesting research proposals that focus on enhancing the health, survival and productivity of honey bee colonies, which provide practical and tangible solutions to the beekeeping industry.

The funding sponsor for these proposals is the National Honey Board (NHB), with Project Apis m. (PAm) administering the proposal, accountability and funding process. The NHB funds, collected by a federal research and promotion program ($0.015/lb), for Production Research, were approximately $347,000 in 2019. PAm administers several other initiatives with funding from many sources, including corporate sponsors, private donations and grants. Past proposals received and funded by PAm and NHB reflect a similar focus on supporting the industry.

The National Honey Board is an industry-funded agriculture promotion group that works to educate consumers about the benefits and uses for honey and honey products through research, marketing and promotional programs. Project Apis m. is the largest nongovernmental, non-profit honey bee research organization in the USA. Established by beekeepers and almond growers in 2006, PAm has infused over $8 million into bee research to provide growers with healthier bees resulting in better pollination and increased crop yields.

Priority Areas for Funding

With this call for research proposals, PAm is requesting proposals for research addressing honey bee health, nutrition and productivity. Priority will be given to proposals which aim to produce solutions to industry problems. Current specific areas of interest include, but are not limited to:

• Addressing practices for sustainable profitability of beekeeping and the provision of pollination services to agriculture
• Innovations to control and manage AFB, EFB, nosema, varroa and viruses
• Studying and developing innovative management techniques including: indoor overwintering; supplemental forage impacts on pollinators, resource management, and landscape carrying capacity; cropping system management.
• addressing gaps in honey bee complete nutrition
• pollination and colony density economics, including stocking rates, land use and landscape level comparisons, transportation and inspection impacts
• cover crop efficacy and management studies including seed composition, implementation, establishment, termination, soil benefits, pest/pathogen/beneficial insect use, frost, irrigation, etc.

Other projects will be considered, and research outside the U.S. is possible (all application materials must be in English). The goal of this research is to help producers maintain colony health and honey production. Most proposals will likely be of one-year duration. If multi-year projects are considered, it is with the understanding that funding for subsequent years would be contingent on performance and National Honey Board budget availability beyond 2020. The amount of funds available for a particular proposal will depend on the number and merit of successful proposals. 

Background

The Morton-Kelly Charitable Trust was established in 1988 by Joan Morton Kelly and her mother, Mildred Duncan Morton, to facilitate their philanthropic activities.

The overarching interest of the Morton-Kelly Charitable Trust is to connect people and place through the arts, culture and the natural environment in Maine. Program Areas reflect how communities, organizations and individuals can cultivate creative expression and a sense of responsibility towards one another and to the lands and waters around us. Arts, Culture and Historic Preservation

The Trust is interested in community arts and cultural programs, cultural facility improvements, historic preservation projects and celebration of the diverse cultural heritage of Maine.

Arts and culture programs and organizations help foster vibrant communities, creative expression, inspiration and build community connections. Community cultural centers and preservation of historic sites and resources can enhance downtown and community revitalization efforts and be a cornerstone of community arts and cultural life. The Trust is also interested in programs that expand cross-cultural understanding of the unique and layered histories of Maine and contemporary expressions of culture and heritage.

The Trust’s Arts and Culture Program Area welcomes operating support or project proposals that meet any of the following goals:

• Access to the arts, creative expression and community cultural programs

    • Access to arts experiences of all kinds, arts education for all ages, and performances and programs that serve Maine communities and residents.
    • Visual and performing arts programs in Maine museums, public libraries, historical societies and other cultural organizations.
    • Both urban and rural programs that reflect local needs and bring community members together, including lectures, exhibits and special events.

      • The Trust will support structural improvements and building systems (such as electrical service) rather than maintenance, painting or short-term repairs.
    • Preservation projects may also include restoration of significant material cultural resources.
    • Applicants are strongly encouraged to provide a letter indicating that the Maine Historic Preservation Commission or appropriate Tribal Historic Preservation Office is aware of the project, and that work is being conducted to appropriate preservation standards.

    • Programs that build community connection, celebrate the diverse cultural heritage of Maine communities and elevate the unique experiences of Black, Indigenous and other under-represented groups.

Environmental Initiatives

The Trust is interested in environmental initiatives that protect ecological values, water quality and ecosystem health through land conservation, stewardship, education and research programs. The Trust is interested in supporting organizations that promote positive relationships with nature including scientific, ecological and cultural perspectives. The Trust is also interested in expanded efforts to conserve culturally significant lands for Wabanaki communities.

The Trust’s Environmental Initiatives Program Area welcomes proposals for operating support or projects that meet any of the following goals or related priorities:

• Provide equitable access to outdoor experiences and nature-based education

    • Programs that offer outdoor experiences and nature-based education for youth and community members to inspire care and responsibility for the environment.

    • Applied science and research for the restoration and management of ecosystems, especially the coastal and inland waters of Maine.
    • Relevant research and education for water quality and habitat improvement.
    • Addressing climate change impacts on coastal and aquatic resources.
    • Initiatives that use science, policy and community engagement to improve and restore natural resources and ecosystems.

Funding

Up to $20,000 in grant funding may be requested.

The purpose of this notice of funding opportunity (NOFO) is to support research on interventions to improve health in Native American (NA) populations. This includes:

• etiologic research, where there is a significant gap in knowledge, that will directly inform intervention development or adaptations,
• research that develops, adapts, or tests the efficacy or effectiveness of health promotion and disease prevention interventions,
• research that tests culturally informed treatment or recovery interventions and
• where a sufficient body of knowledge on intervention efficacy exists, research on dissemination and implementation that develops and tests strategies to overcome barriers to the adoption, integration, scale-up, and sustainability of effective interventions.

Existing data suggest that significant acute and chronic disease inequities exist for NA populations. Concurrently, NA populations experience unique sociopolitical, historical, and environmental stressors and risks that may exacerbate health conditions and/or impact the effectiveness of existing solutions to address the conditions. They also possess unique strengths and resiliencies that can mitigate stressors or inform intervention strategies. Through this initiative, intervention and related research is sought to build upon community knowledge, resources, and resilience to test science-based, culturally appropriate solutions to reduce morbidity and mortality through identification and remediation of precursors to diseases and disorders and through culturally informed treatment. Interventions should be designed with a consideration for sustainability within the communities where they are tested, and have the flexibility to be readily adapted, disseminated, and scaled up to other communities where culturally appropriate. For the purposes of this NOFO, NA includes the following populations: Alaska Natives, American Indians (whose ancestral lands fall at least partially within the U.S. main land).

About The Award

The Burroughs Wellcome Fund aims to stimulate the growth of new connections between thinkers working in largely disconnected fields who might together change the course of climate change’s impact on human health. In the three years between Fall 2023 and Summer 2026, we will dedicate $1M to supporting small, early stage grants of $2,500–$50,000 toward achieving this goal.

We are mainly but not exclusively interested in activities that build connections between basic/early biomedical scientific approaches and ecological, environmental, geological, geographic, and planetary-scale thinking, as well as with population-focused fields, including epidemiology and public health, demography, economics, and urban planning. Also of interest is work piloting new approaches or interactions toward reducing the impact of health-centered activities, such as developing more sustainable systems for health care, care delivery, and biomedical research systems.

Another area of interest is preparation for the impacts of extreme weather and other crises that can drive large-scale disruptions that will immediately impact human health and the delivery of health care. Public outreach, climate communication, and education efforts focused on the intersection of climate and health are also appropriate for this call. This program supports work conceived through many kinds of creative thinking. Successful applicants include academic scientists, physicians, and public health experts, community organizations, science outreach centers, non-biomedical academic departments, and more.

BSF Regular Research Grants

The BSF Research Grants program is the main program of the BSF, and it funds both U.S. and Israeli scientists who wish to collaborate on research projects that address topics in basic science. In recent years the BSF has been receiving some 400 research grant applications annually, including start-up applications, approving about 100. At any given moment there are around 450 active grants in this program, and the total annual expenditure in this program is around $16 M.

Applications to the program are made jointly by U.S. and Israeli researchers. No prior collaboration is required, but the synergy between the researchers must be evident. Also, as you might imagine, the BSF is different from a national science foundation, and insists not only on scientific excellence, but also on collaboration between the principal investigators from the two countries. We base our evaluation of the collaboration, first and foremost, on the joint publications that emanated from the grant. Lack of joint publications might affect your chances to receive future BSF grants.

Submissions to the program are made once annually in mid-November, but submission in any specific scientific discipline is allowed only each second year (See Areas of Research). The results are announced in early July of the following year, after the summer BSF Board meeting, in which the number of grants and their average size are determined. Traditionally, the board does not discuss specific proposals or fields.

In today’s value, the BSF has awarded over $700 M. to over 5,400 joint U.S.-Israel research programs of the highest quality, since it was founded in 1972.

Clinical Cancer Research

Patient Involvement

The importance and merit of patient involvement in research are widely acknowledged. When patients are involved, everyone benefits, because it ensures clinical and medical research work is performed more effectively and advances the delivery of what patients really need. This can only be achieved based on the collaborative identification and understanding of patients’ unmet needs. Receiving patient input throughout the design, implementation, and evaluation of clinical trials helps improve the discovery, development, and evaluation of new treatments.

Funding Approach

Our funding approach is based on the following main principles :

Patient Centricity: We only support research designed according to our principles of patient involvement and bringing new ways to improve patients’ quality of life during their cancer treatment journey.

Short time frames, maximum impact: We fund interventional clinical trials that would not be funded by commercial organizations (Pharma/Biotech/Start up). Research projects should demonstrate patient impact within 3 to 5 years and start within 6 months upon official award notification.

Strategic Focus Areas: Designed together with an international expert group, our strategic focus areas form the core of our philanthropic funding approach.

Partnerships to maximize reach: We partner with other funding organizations to leverage resources and accelerate the improvement of patient treatment options and quality of life everywhere. Oncology: mBC-CONNECT CCC RFP Program

Implementation science research project (i.e., the scientific study of methods and strategies that facilitate the uptake of evidence-based practice and research into regular use) that is focused on implementation of evidence-based practices for facilitating anticancer therapy education with patients with metastatic breast cancer (mBC) after a decision to treat has been made and prior to administration of the selected agent to support adherence to treatment.

Funding

Purpose

Physician-scientists often receive world-class training in patient care, including the newest technologies and approaches to diagnose and treat disease. However, these clinicians also require additional training in clinical research, in order to stay up to date with the pace of medical progress. As such, many radiation oncology residency programs offer a research year to these young physician-scientists to ensure they have sufficient expertise to contribute to research projects or clinical trials that will advance medical practice and improve patient outcomes.

Many of these training experiences occur in an academic setting and are focused mainly on retrospective clinical analyses or basic, laboratory-based science; there is a paucity of training opportunities for clinical fellows to gain knowledge in the design, application, and uptake of the results from clinical research (including pharma-sponsored research). The Fellowship Program is designed to provide physician-scientist trainees with real-world experience in the development, administration and application of clinical trials and real-world studies at the facilities of AstraZeneca and its Affiliates in Gaithersburg, Maryland.

Funding

$100,000 per award is anticipated to be awarded to the selected fellow’s Institution. The fellowship funds must be used for salary support for the selected fellow and a fraction of the funds can be used for travel to the ASTRO Annual Meeting.

Award Frequency and Amount

Typically, grants are awarded for one year, and an organization receives no more than one grant a year. Applications for additional years must be submitted annually, accompanied with an annual outcomes report.

Grants of more than $5,000 are less typical than those most often awarded by the Northeast Delta Dental Foundation. Especially as the amount of the grant for which the applicant is applying increases, the expectation is that the information required during the application process will be well documented and detailed, with particular attention to how the Foundation will be recognized for its financial support.

Background

McGraw Foundation, headquartered in Northbrook, Illinois, makes annual grants to not-for-profit organizations.  The Foundation’s areas of interest involve the fields of conservation, educational programs at all levels, and human services. Occasionally, grants are made in other areas such as health, medical research and cultural.

Grant requests are suggested to be within a range of $2,000 to $10,000. Grant recipients and amounts will be determined by several criteria. Naturally, availability of funds is a key factor.

The Foundation will occasionally make large grants ($25,000 or more) to support unusually promising efforts in any of its areas of interest. Innovative research, special education, and/or other activities will be considered if the Foundation’s support would assist an effort or a project in making a significant impact.

Nature-Centrism as a Lens for Organizational Behavior and Decision-Making

Over the course of 30 years the V. Kann Rasmussen Foundation has funded critical but low- attention areas, knowledge gaps, and cross-cutting environmental strategies that attract little or no investment from other funders. Looking back, almost all the environmental issues that VKRF has engaged in have led back to humanity’s disregard for nature’s inherent value and for the limits of our planet’s natural resources. VKRF supported conservation issues in its early years, and has addressed water pollution, toxicity, soil depletion, and climate change in its later years. Most recently, the foundation has worked on a toolbox for exploring and working with the complex and dynamic processes involved in many societal and natural systems simultaneously reaching irreversible tipping points. Through the lens of a systems perspective, it becomes even clearer how humans have damaged their own life support systems at all planetary levels. A recalibration of our relationship to nature is needed. A relationship where all life forms co-exist in balanced, rather than hierarchical, systems. Only a shift away from the separation from, and domination of, nature to an understanding of our deep connection to, and embeddedness in, nature can provide us with the solutions and blueprints for tackling the challenges we face today.

In its next rounds of grantmaking, the foundation will continue its recent work at the systems level, further exploring the consequences of, and solutions to, humanity’s anthropocentric departure from value structures based on our kinship with nature. We recognize that we stand on the shoulders of nature-centric thinking of previous generations, cultures, and knowledge systems. We also recognize the significant work of different schools of regenerative and nature-centric practices that is already being applied in many sectors and geographies.

The foundation believes that many of these already-existing frameworks for nature-centric worldviews have the potential to lead to new ethical paradigms, models for cooperation, co- existence, and resilience that will overcome humans’ alienation from nature and foster well- being of all life on our shared planet.

As an entry point for its upcoming grantmaking round, the foundation will explore whether a more mainstream adoption of a nature-centric worldview is possible, either within our current structures or in the future, when the escalating polycrisis prepares the ground for a broader re-examination of our current paradigm.

This call for proposals focuses on nature-centric decision-making, in which nature’s inherent value becomes a central principle and informs institutions’ practices across their activities. VKRF is looking to identify grantees who are ready to make the recognition of interbeing, interdependence, and interconnectedness central to their strategy development, decision making, and day-to-day operations.

With this effort, VKRF hopes to prepare the ground for a significant scaling-up of nature-centric policies and practices that can lead to long-term resilience and integrity of the entire biosphere.

Types of Projects

Projects could include, but are not limited to:

• participatory research on governance frameworks for nature-centric decision making
• participatory social research on nature-centric cultural shifts, design principles, and management practices
• planning and learning processes that will facilitate an organization’s application of a nature- centric lens to its strategy and planning processes, day-to-day operations, and relationships with external partners and stakeholders
• building organizational capacity for buy-in of nature-centric strategies at the highest levels of organizational decision-making and governance
• peer learning in the form of workshops, convenings and conferences that will allow multiple organizations to co-create and share methodologies, approaches, tool-building, and practices that make a nature-centric lens prominent in behaviors and decision-making
• related visionary work exploring scenarios moving us toward a mainstream nature-centric future.

Objectives and Criteria

All proposals will need to be science-based and should meet the following criteria:

• Scope:
  • be visionary, experimental, and action-oriented when it comes to research and the changing of minds; and
  • consider life as relational.
    • The foundation is only interested in projects in which both human and non-human life are taken into consideration.
• Approach:
  • build on cross-cutting and/or transdisciplinary knowledge domains;
  • ambitious in the effort to scale and mainstream a nature-centric worldview; and
  • come to this topic with a nonjudgemental, curious, and collaborative mindset.
• Field-building:
  • advance the field beyond the results of the individual project
• Output and information resulting from funding:
  • must be open-source, accessible and available to be used free of charge by anyone in civil society and within the government sector, though the grantee will retain ownership of the copyright for any material produced.

Funding

The foundation will entertain projects with a one- to two-year timeline. Results and outcomes should be achievable within the grant period and the budget requested.

The foundation’s total grantmaking budget for this funding round is six million USD. We anticipate funding 12-15 projects.

The primary aim of the Mathematical Sciences Infrastructure Program is to foster the continuing health of the mathematical sciences research community as a whole. In addition, the program complements the Workforce Program in the Mathematical Sciences in its goal to increase the number of well-prepared U.S. based individuals who successfully pursue careers in the mathematical sciences and in other professions in which expertise in the mathematical sciences plays an increasingly important role. The DMS Infrastructure program invites projects that support core research in the mathematical sciences, including:

• novel projects supporting research infrastructure across the mathematical sciences community;
• training projects complementing the Workforce Program, and
• conference, workshop, and travel support requests that include cross-disciplinary activities or have an impact at the national scale. 

Proposals under this solicitation submitted to DMS Infrastructure must show engagement in developing or enhancing the mathematical sciences research infrastructure in the U.S., including, but not limited to, broadening participation activities; professional development training; or involvement of students and early career researchers. Proposals must explain the regional or national scale impact of the activity that goes substantially beyond the submitting institution or the location of the event.

Full proposals (with exception of conference proposals, which are subject to lead-time requirements) must be submitted close to one of the Full Proposal Target Dates.

Novel projects that serve to strengthen the research infrastructure:

The DMS Infrastructure Program will consider novel projects that support and strengthen the research infrastructure across the mathematical sciences community. These projects most often cut across multiple sub-disciplines supported by DMS or involve interdisciplinary collaborations. The main goal of these projects should be to create a new research infrastructure or substantially enhance or transform an existing infrastructure with regional or national impact that goes substantially beyond the submitting institution or the location of the project. Full proposals must be submitted by the Full Proposal Target Date.

Training projects:

raining projects: Training proposals submitted to DMS Infrastructure must not fit into one of the areas covered by solicitations in the Workforce Program in the Mathematical Sciences; they must be submitted by the Full Proposal Target Date; and they must:

• Include a core research component for trainees in mathematical sciences;
• Demonstrate promise for an impact at the regional or national scale that goes substantially beyond the submitting institution or the location of the project;
• Satisfy at least one of the following criteria:
  • Serve as models to be replicated,
  • Promote partnerships with non-academic entities, minority-serving institutions, or community colleges, or
  • Include a substantial broadening participation initiative.

In addition, all proposals of this type must clearly identify:

• Goals to be achieved;
• Specific new activities to be conducted, the way in which these address the goals, and the way in which the activities significantly differ from or enhance common practice;
• Measurable outcomes for the project;
• Plans and methods for assessment of progress toward the goals to be achieved, and for evaluation of the success of the activity;
• Recruitment, selection, and retention plans for participants, including members of underrepresented groups;
• Sustainability plans to continue the pursuit of the project's goals when funding terminates; and
• A budget commensurate with the proposed activity.

Conferences, Symposia, Working Research Sessions, Travel Support Requests:

Principal Investigators should carefully read the program solicitation Conferences and Workshops in the Mathematical Sciences to obtain important information regarding the substance of proposals for conferences, workshops, summer/winter schools, international travel support, and similar activities. Conference/workshop proposals that concern topics within a particular subdiscipline of mathematics or statistics should be submitted to the appropriate DMS disciplinary program(s). These submissions are subject to the lead-time requirements specified by the disciplinary program(s); see the program web pages listed on the DMS home page.

Conference/workshop proposals may be submitted to the DMS Infrastructure program only if the intended topical areas span a wide range of the mathematical sciences and are consequently not within the scope of DMS disciplinary programs. The required lead time for submission of such proposals is:

• 6 months in advance of the meeting date for proposals requesting no more than $50,000 to support a domestic meeting;
• 9 months in advance of the meeting date for proposals requesting more than $50,000 to support a domestic meeting;
• 12 months in advance of the meeting date for proposals requesting support for participation in a meeting taking place outside the United States.

Translational Bridge Award

Background

The LRA established the Translational Bridge Award (TBA) to provide a dedicated funding mechanism to bridge the gap between post-discovery and pre-commercial development and to accelerate the pace at which promising LRA-funded foundational research discoveries are translated into clinical evaluation and transitioned to a viable product that impacts patients directly.

Program Description

The Translational Bridge Award provides up to $450,000 over two years for milestone- driven projects with strong, relatively near-term commercialization potential or with an immediate opportunity for clinical evaluation. All projects should advance the discovery of potential commercial entities or clinical products with a clear and direct relevance to people with lupus and offer the potential to improve diagnosis or standard of care for the disease or usher in a cure. These can include a range of technologies, therapies, interventions, and diagnostics. Proposals should be centered around a well-defined bridge plan of translating the discovery and/or advancing the entity or product to the next development stage. This bridge plan should consider the scientific, clinical, business and/or commercialization objectives.

Project Objectives

Proposals should include milestone-driven projects with clear objectives, well-defined on the translational, clinical or drug/diagnostic development path, with relatively near-term commercialization potential.

Two main types of projects will be considered:

• Projects that aim to establish a robust data validation package, including pre-clinical or pilot clinical studies, to advance the discovery of a potential entity or product by enabling translational inflection points such as securing/bolstering of intellectual property, securing additional venture capital for a start-up company, obtaining clinical proof-of-concept, etc.
• Ancillary projects to ongoing or recently completed clinical trials for further analysis on a potential entity or product, or other defined study components (such as associated biomarkers).

Scientific project objectives should be aimed at:

• Late-stage evaluation or validation (no foundational discovery research) of the proposed entity or product, including, but not limited to, clinical proof of concept, projects that aim to scale up previous results, move to a more relevant testing system or population, compound screening, chemical fine-tuning, pharmacological evaluations, and/or sensitivity/specificity testing.
• Clinical trial ancillary projects can also include experimentation aimed at further understanding the mechanism of action or pharmacodynamics of the entity or product, molecular effects and/or companion biomarkers.

Proposals can include multiple scientific and/or clinical objectives. Other objectives not mentioned here may be appropriate, and we recommend you contact LRA scientific staff to consult on this topic.

The proposal should also include a description of the legal, regulatory, business and/or commercialization objective(s) of the project, such as, but not limited to, generating data that would support:

• Creating or strengthening an intellectual property position.
• Launching a commercial enterprise, such as a start-up company, around the entity or product.
• Raising industry interest around the entity or product, including initiating a clinical investigation.
• Forging a commercial partnership
• Securing additional rounds of financial backing or funding.

Beyond Pediatrics: Advancing Early Detection in Adult-Onset Type 1 Diabetes

Summary

• The main goal of this funding opportunity is to improve adult diagnosis of type 1 diabetes (T1D), with special emphasis on the early stages of the disease.
• This request for application (RFA) will award grants to non-profit and for-profit entities such as academic institutions and industry partners of up to $900,000.00 each and up to 3 years.

Background

During a past Breakthrough T1D-hosted workshop, experts identified key knowledge gaps in adult-onset T1D 7, including the need to reduce ethnic disparities, extend longitudinal screening studies (of genetically high-risk and autoantibody-positive individuals) into adulthood, evaluate disease-modifying therapies given their greater efficacy in children, address challenges in misdiagnosis, assess the benefit and risks of adjunctive therapies, and strengthen post-diagnosis education, psychosocial support and long-term care. 

We encourage research proposals that address one or more of the following areas, including but not limited to:

• Immune Activation and Autoimmunity: The autoimmune process in adult-onset T1D appears to exhibit distinct patterns of immune activation compared to pediatric cases, including differences in immune cell subsets, cytokine profiles, and the timing and magnitude of the immune response. Proposed studies should aim to characterize these adult-specific immune signatures and investigate their relationship to clinical progression, treatment requirements, and therapeutic responsiveness. Research should leverage established datasets and biobanks with adult-onset T1D cohorts to validate findings across diverse populations. These efforts will be critical to informing the design and timing of disease-modifying therapies targeted at the early stages of T1D in adults.
• Islet Pathology and Beta Cell Function: Adults diagnosed with T1D often retain greater residual beta cell function at onset than children, suggesting slower disease progression and potential differences in islet pathology. Research should explore the mechanisms underlying these differences, including the pace of beta cell destruction and the regenerative capacity of the adult human pancreas, with implications for therapeutic timing and response.
• Autoantibodies and Biomarker Validation: In early-stage T1D, adults are more likely to test positive for GADA, while children more commonly exhibit IAA, IA-2A, or ZnT8A. We are seeking proposals that aim to better characterize and validate alternative autoantibodies and other established biomarkers of disease progression through Stages 1 to 3 in adults, with the goal of improving diagnostic accuracy and stratification of progression, including adults with slow disease progression.
• Accuracy in Misdiagnosis and Diagnostic Tools: We support proposals that aim to address the misdiagnosis of adult-onset T1D, including efforts to distinguish it from T2D through the integration of autoantibodies, C-peptide, and clinical features. Proposals may also include the analysis of existing electronic health record (EHR) data to identify diagnostic patterns and improve classification strategies.
• Epidemiology Studies: Evidence suggests that while a family history of T1D increases risk at all ages, the strength of this association appears to be greater in childhood-onset cases. This RFA welcomes studies that aim to advance our understanding of the epidemiology of adult-onset T1D using existing databases, as this area remains poorly defined. Projects examining incidence, prevalence, and age-related trends are encouraged to help clarify population-level risk factors

Background

We support non-profit organizations committed to making an impact in addressing environmental problems, engaging in conservation and resource protections, and tackling social concerns. Through these small and mid-scale grants, we aim to support like-minded organizations with missions that align with the work of the Wright-Ingraham Institute. The Wright-Ingraham Institute has been awarding grants since 2012. In that time, we have awarded more than $400,000 to over 65 organizations.

Focus Areas

Our grants are designed to help address problems in three main areas.

Climate Change

Today, efforts to cope with the climate crisis are estimated to be costing the global economy approximately $3 trillion annually. We support organizations that are actively solving problems of how to bring clean air and water to global communities, how to prevent or stem natural disasters and meteorological events, and how to best promote sustainable practices and support renewable sources of energy.

Land Issues

Our grants strengthen organizations that are looking at different ways to apply concepts of sustainability, including ways to reverse the loss of fragile ecosystems that connect people and animals with land, or that work at the nexus of food, fuel and shelter. Additionally, we seek to better understand how human systems and natural systems intersect one another.

Wildlife Conservation

We support organizations that are working courageously on ways to conserve and preserve important wildlife habitats, as globalization continues to seek to develop every corner of the globe.

Richard T. Parker Grant

The Richard T. Parker Grant is dedicated to an alumnus of the Wright-Ingraham Institute’s Running Creek Field Station program, and is supported by a generous, family-bestowed gift derived from the Richard T. Parker Trust. This grant is awarded to an organization conducting research in the fields of science, wildlife, and/or environmental education.

Amount: $10,000

The Heising-Simons Foundation’s Science program solicits proposals for support of meetings, workshops, conferences, summer schools, research collaboration gatherings, and other events related to astronomy, cosmology, fundamental physics, and climate change science.

Through its funding, the Science program has three main goals:

• Enable basic scientific research,
• Connect key stakeholders, and
• Communicate scientific results.

Events facilitate connections between attendees; allow for the communication of progress and findings; and push science forward through discussion, collaboration, and shared learning. Communities are built through interaction, and events can provide a vital space to network and encounter diverse perspectives. For those early in their careers or that have identities that are underrepresented in their field, certain events can offer the opportunity to find a mentor or a sense of belonging and scientific identity. 

The Northeast Sea Grant Consortium, in partnership with the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA)’s Northeast Fisheries Science Center is seeking proposals to improve understanding of fishing community interactions with offshore wind development in the U.S. Northeast from the New York Bight through the Gulf of Maine.

Through this Request for Proposals (RFP), the NESGC and NEFSC are continuing to advance a regional approach and seek to enhance existing and catalyze new human dimensions research in the Northeast that will: 

• Further understanding of the interactions between fisheries and offshore wind development, including connections to fishing community resilience and economies;
• Build actionable science that bridges research, fishing community, and management needs;
• Build capacity for ongoing collaborative, inter- and transdisciplinary human dimensions research. 

The focus is on advancing needed social, cultural, historical, and economic research to inform communities, developers, and other decision-makers with an emphasis on research that is conducted “with and by” affected communities and not “on and for.” Qualitative, quantitative, and mixed methods approaches from across the social sciences and humanities are encouraged.

Project teams do not need to be based in the Northeast but must include at least one Co-PI from one of six states of the NESGC (i.e. NY, CT, MA, NH, ME, RI). A 25% non-federal match is required for all proposals.
