Our Mission

The Millers were passionate about the communities in which they lived. They created the Elinor and T.W. Miller Jr. Foundation to ensure that their resources would continue to enhance Winter Park, Florida; Ashland, Ohio; and the surrounding areas. The foundation is dedicated to the causes Bill and Elinor loved most: education, health care, athleticism, spiritual health, and community engagement.

The foundation commenced operation in 2004 after Bill passed away, and today, the board continues to follow the Miller’s leadership, honoring their vision and legacy through a commitment to serving the people and institutions of Winter Park and Ashland.

Reducing the Burden of Cancer

The American Cancer Society states that one in two men and one in three women will be diagnosed with cancer in their lifetime. These cancer diagnoses often create both a health and financial crisis for patients and their families. Studies show factors including race/ethnicity, health insurance status and income can affect the timing of a patient’s diagnosis and treatment, as well as their survival and financial impact. Working with our partners, we aim to reduce the risk of getting cancer and address socioeconomic barriers to care.

• Prevention
  • provide education and services to encourage people to adopt healthy diets, exercise regularly, avoid tobacco, and protect their skin.
• Screening and Treatment
  • increase awareness of the importance of screenings, early detection and timely treatment among vulnerable populations; provide free health screenings for patients and connect them to care.
• Financial/Logistical Assistance
  • connect uninsured and underinsured patients to programs providing low or no-cost co-pays and social determinants of health (SDOH) interventions, e.g., transportation, childcare, healthy food, home meal delivery; reduce the economic burden of low-income patients with emergency funds for rent, utilities and other household expenses.

Preparing Tomorrow's Healthcare Workforce

• Patients report that they feel more heard and are more compliant with medical guidance when they share race/ethnicity with their healthcare practitioner. Nearly a third of the U.S. population is Black or Hispanic, yet the combined Black and Hispanic representation among oncologists is 8 percent and the combined Black, Indigenous and Hispanic representation among pharmacists is 10.7 percent. Closing the gap between diverse representation among the general population and among healthcare practitioners will improve health equity and patient outcomes.

Accelerating Crisis Response

With the increased frequency and intensity of climate events, more people across North America need temporary or extended shelter, as well as food and medications, during and in the aftermath of crises. And with 10 percent of the population in both Canada and the U.S. living in food insecure households, programs to provide regular, nutritious meals to children, families and seniors can reduce chronic disease and improve long-term health.

  • support relief agencies’ efforts to prepare for forecasted as well as unforeseen emergencies;
  • support relief agencies’ efforts to help people become Red Cross Ready.
• Disaster Relief and Recovery
  • mobilize resources to provide acute services, such as water, food, shelter, comfort kits, medicines, and healthcare for people affected by natural disasters or crises;

Valero Energy Foundation 

Valero, its employees and the Valero Energy Foundation are committed to improving the quality of life in communities where we work and live, fulfilling a mission that was set from the beginning. We set the standard for corporate citizenship and promotes prosperity in our communities. 

The Valero Energy Foundation -- a public charity and Valero's philanthropic arm -- funds nonprofit agencies that serve predominantly disadvantaged children and families. In 2019, the Foundation contributed appoximately $40 million in assistance in the communities where Valero has major operations.

Our funding focuses on our four pillars of giving in communities where we have major operations.

• Basic Needs:  Valero gives assistance to agencies that provide basic needs of life, including shelter, food and clothing necessary for the development of a strong and safe community.

Goals

The mission of the Brentwood Foundation is to provide leadership in the field of Osteopathic Medicine through its support of activities that promote and improve patient care through professional education, research and public awareness.

This support is directed at Osteopathic Medical Education, Clinical Research and Community Initiantives that impact health and wellness in Northeast Ohio. 

Goals established by the Foundation to achieve its mission include: 

• Support Graduate Medical Education at South Pointe Hospital through the Brentwood Center of Excellence. 
• Support Clinical Research in Osteopathic Manipulative Medicine and Conventional Medicine that drive cutting edge developments and innovation to improve clinical outcomes.
• Participate in Community Initiatives in Northeast Ohio through collaborations with local Foundations.

Woodruff Foundation Grant

The Woodruff Foundation welcomes grant requests from tax-exempt, nonprofit organizations located in Cuyahoga County, Ohio, whose work addresses behavioral health through the following focus areas:

• treatment
• education and prevention
• coordination of resources in the community
• research
• advocacy

Grants will generally be awarded on a one-year basis. The Woodruff Foundation’s general policy is to make only one grant per year directly to an organization. The Foundation does, however, encourage collaboration and partnership among its grantees. The Foundation will consider joint requests from partner agencies, even if one of the partner agencies has already received a grant individually or plans to submit a separate request.

Definitions

Treatment –Interventions to address mild, moderate, and severe mental illness and addiction. Includes medication management, therapy, counseling, case management, vocational supports, housing, peer support, and recreation.

Education – Efforts to train new behavioral health workers and provide professional development to those working in the field. Also, efforts to instill knowledge about mental health and mental illness and drug and alcohol use and abuse in the general public or in specific at-risk groups.

Prevention – Programs to prevent risky behaviors, to enhance strengths, or to develop competencies that can help to impede further development of mental illness and/or addiction.

Coordination of Resources – The process through which providers or systems are brought into partnership in order to improve access and/or quality of care.

Research – Systematic investigation of questions related to any aspect of mental health, mental illness, or addiction.

Collaboration – Work conducted jointly by two or more organizations or stakeholders. Examples of collaboration might include joint program development, shared staffing, programs to establish shared purchasing, one organization training another to deliver certain interventions, mergers, or consolidations.

Advocacy – Initiatives designed to impact the development of policies that promote and/or increase access to behavioral health care for residents of Cuyahoga County. This can include general advocacy work, research intended to educate policy makers or for a specific advocacy project. The Foundation cannot grant funds specifically for lobbying. The Woodruff Foundation is willing to consider proposals from organizations without a presence in Cuyahoga County for this priority ONLY, provided the applicant can clearly demonstrate how the proposed project would impact the residents of Cuyahoga County. Advocacy initiatives aimed at increasing and strengthening the behavioral health workforce are of particular interest. Partnership with a local organization or Woodruff Foundation grantee is strongly encouraged.

HealthPath Foundation of Ohio

HealthPath is a grantmaker that partners with organizations working to achieve the results of Oral Health, Healthy Ohioans and Age-Friendly Communities across a 36-county region in Ohio.

The Responsive Grants Program is a competitive grants program in which applicants can apply for project, capacity building, equipment or technology, small capital projects, or general operating support in support of the organization’s mission.

Healthy Eating, Active Living

We support projects and strategies that prevent or manage chronic health conditions by promoting healthy eating and active living through one or more of the following:

• Education about the health benefits of a healthy weight, good nutrition, and physical activity
• Efforts that encourage and support behavior change
• Environmental changes that make healthy choices the easy choices
• Increased access and distribution of healthy foods
• Promotion and provision of opportunities for increased physical activity

Thriving Neighborhoods

We support projects and strategies that address improving neighborhood conditions where people live, learn, work, and play so that everyone has the ability to achieve their full health potential by:

• Improving the accessibility, affordability, and quality of health and health care
• Improving access to reliable transportation options so people can reach needed health and social services
• Improving access to stable and safe housing to foster a healthy living environment
• Supporting efforts to increase connections to community resources and to one another to foster an environment of social connectedness and belonging
• Improving access to high-quality early childhood programs including in-home programs designed to improve maternal and child health, parenting skills, and child development as well as programs supporting the health and well-being of the preK-12 student population
• Supporting coalition and cross-sector collaboration that improves neighborhood conditions and advances policy or programmatic change

Mental Health and Addiction

We support projects and strategies that address mental health and/or addiction. Related to mental health, we are interested in the area of health promotion and prevention. Related to addiction, we are interested in the areas of prevention, early intervention, and recovery support. We are especially interested in evidence-based programs focused on:

• Prevention activities such as education and stigma reduction of mental health and substance use disorders; trauma-informed care practices and supportive environments in schools, churches, workplaces, and other community settings; and provision of mental health services in schools and school-based health clinics
• Early intervention activities such as identifying and reducing individual risk factors for substance use, improving connections to needed services across various systems, and harm reduction efforts to reduce the number of deaths and the spread of disease
• Building the behavioral health workforce, including peer support specialists/peer recovery supporters, supporting high school and college pipeline programming, and encouraging careers in behavioral health
• Supporting people in recovery with positive supports such as housing, connections to employment, and transportation
• Coalition and cross-sector collaboration that advances policy or programmatic change

The Foundation awards monetary grants to qualifying institutions and agencies for initiatives designed to improve the quality of life along with the advancement of medical research. About the Foundation

The Sam J. Frankino Foundation (SJFF) supports excellence in education as well as other avenues for child development and personal growth. We seek to partner with organizations or groups to satisfy basic human needs — whether that takes the form of economic assistance for the homeless, local food banks, safe shelters for children and families that fall victim to domestic violence, etc.

SJFF supports community and culture, particularly the Italian-American community. We desire to facilitate pioneering discoveries in medical and surgical research; construction of health care facilities that support the complex healing process; creation and support of the arts; initiatives that strive to protect our environment; and other special projects that affect the lives of children and families in need, primarily within Northeast Ohio

Programs

Child & Family

Education is the cornerstone within the life and development of a child. The Sam J. Frankino Foundation is committed to supporting schools and other academic institutions. Future generations of Newtons, Monets, Einsteins, Hemingways, Goodalls, and Jobses will certainly bring amazing discoveries and creations in science, the arts, literature, technology, and more to our world. It begins by providing them with the tools necessary to see beyond their walls.

The Foundation welcomes opportunities to partner with nonprofit organizations that reach out to youth — particularly children who are homeless or within foster care — and that offer physical education programs, thereby encouraging physical as well as mental health.

SJFF also supports programs that seek to help victims of child abuse and domestic violence, whether through women’s shelters, law enforcement programs or judicial avenues. We offer grants for programs and services that empower children and families to overcome poverty or other adversities, thereby fostering hope and inspiring change.

Community

The Sam J. Frankino Foundation welcomes opportunities to support our community and culture, particularly the Italian-American community. We contribute to social, educational, recreational and other creative initiatives for all ages that strengthen community and are dedicated to preserving and enriching our heritage and traditions.

Health & Human Services

It is a mission of the Sam J. Frankino Foundation to help those in need to get the proper care and support to lead productive, rewarding lives.

The SJFF gives high priority to support health care initiatives and organizations that deliver care to the poor, sick and disabled in our community as well as institutions that advance the knowledge of medicine and surgery in maintaining one’s overall health.

SJFF seeks to help the poor, homeless, and broken, primarily within our community, through grants that support programs and services that reach these fragile groups. We also want to help when tragedy strikes – whether a home fire, tornado, or other natural disaster.

Our Foundation continues to support organizations that care for children and adults challenged with physical and developmental disabilities as well as mental health issues. We also honor our valiant, courageous veterans. Sam J. Frankino served as a sergeant in the U.S. Army, and like all veterans, fought to protect the freedoms we hold so dear. We are proud to be able to give back to those who served.

Arts & Culture

The creative spirit and imagination are central to healthy communities. Artistic expression nourishes the soul and breaks down boundaries among races, classes, religions, and cultures. The arts also bring attention to inequalities and celebrate individuality.

Our region is rich with ambitious artists who should be nurtured through support of their creative endeavors. Our Foundation supports professional organizations that create excellent, innovative art and protect art treasures throughout the world.

Beyond the paint, canvas or stage, SJFF supports such worthwhile organizations and programs as zoos, botanical gardens, theaters, museums, symposiums and cultural exhibitions.

Science & Medical

Supporting pioneering discoveries in science, medical research and bioengineering is achieved not only through The Sam J. Frankino Foundation’s generous undergraduate and graduate scholarships but through our financial support of regional health care institutions.

SJFF supports scholastic endeavors and organizations that strive to enrich the lives of those residing primarily in northeast Ohio. We applaud state-of-the art breakthroughs in medical research as well as the delivery of innovative health care solutions.

Clean air, clean water, land conservation, a sustainable environment–The Sam J. Frankino Foundation is committed to supporting such “green” initiatives. A clean, healthy environment is vital for future generations. All must step up and invest to make this goal achievable.

The Sam J. Frankino Foundation supports partnerships that bring together people who value, nurture and protect the natural environment. The SJF Foundation is specifically interested in increasing the understanding of the environment and our relationship to it and its activities.

Greater Toledo Community Foundation, is a public charitable organization created by citizens of our community to enrich the quality of life for individuals and families in our service area. The Foundation serves northwest Ohio and southeast Michigan with a particular emphasis on the greater Toledo area. The mission of The Sisters of St. Francis of Sylvania, Ohio is to live the Gospel in joyful servanthood among the people and as messengers of peace to commit themselves to works that reverence human dignity, embrace the poor and marginalized and respect the gift of all creation. Greater Toledo Community Foundation and the Sisters of St. Francis Foundation have partnered to support programming through the Sisters of St. Francis Foundation Donor Advised Fund (“Sisters of St. Francis Fund”).

Focus Areas

Consistent with their mission statement, grants from the Sisters of St. Francis Fund support a variety of organizations and programs which are working in one or more of the following areas:

• aiding in the fight against human trafficking and/or offering support to its victims;
• offering support to immigrants and refugees; and

• Immigrants & Refugees
  • funding will be awarded in a variety of areas including, but not limited to, citizenship and naturalization efforts; economic opportunity and asset-building programs; physical and mental health supports; diversity, equity and inclusion initiatives; civic participation activities; education and workforce development initiatives; workers’ rights and civil legal aid activities and/or other kinds of efforts that promote the well-being of immigrants and refugees. 
• Social Justice & Equal Opportunity
  • funding will be awarded in a variety of areas including, but not limited to, activities that promote equal access to housing, employment, education and health care; equitable and sustainable neighborhood development; civil and/or environmental justice work; and/or other approaches that promise to uplift the ability of marginalized or underserved communities to define their own futures and access opportunity. 
• Laudato Si’—
  • funding will be awarded in areas that address Pope Francis’ call to care for our common home.
  • These include the following areas
    • Cry of the Earth (climate change, pollution, forests, wetlands, species);
    • Sustainable Lifestyles (personal and community purchasing and lifestyle choices); Ecological Education (how nature functions and is connected, promotion of sustainability);
    • Ecological Spirituality (spiritual connection between humans and God’s creation) and
    • Community Engagement and Participatory Action (collaborative engagement between and among agencies with the Sisters of St. Francis).

The Sisters of St. Francis Fund envisions communities in which all members have equal opportunity to thrive. Grants are provided primarily for programming but, in limited cases, may support general operations or capital projects. The Sisters of St. Francis Fund anticipates making multiple awards ranging from $5,000 to $50,000. Grants are typically awarded for a one-year project period. Funds are limited and will be awarded on a competitive basis.

To improve the lives of people with serious mental illness by investing in innovative projects in Northeast Ohio having national transformational impact.

The Foundation invests primarily in mental health programs in Northeast Ohio. We also support arts and education initiatives in Summit County.

MCMF: Mental Health Grant

After the Morgan family faced challenge after challenge while searching for mental health treatment for their son, Peg committed to help other families, just like hers, and their loved ones living with mental illness.

And she wanted to Think Big.

Today, thanks to Peg’s guidance, our primary focus is on programs and projects addressing prevention, treatment, and recovery for those living with serious mental illness (SMI).

At Peg’s Foundation, here’s what SMI means: Serious Mental Illness (SMI): A chronic mental illness causing impairments that interfere with an individual’s ability to function within their family or society. The illness may have dangerous consequences, and we remain guided by the fact that schizophrenia was the primary illness impacting Peg’s family.

Peg’s Foundation believes in relevant and innovative—and at times disruptive—ideas to improve access to care and treatment for the seriously mentally ill.

Together, we strive to promote the implementation of a stronger, more effective, compassionate, and inclusive health care system for all.

Here are some example goals that potential grantees may find helpful to consider:

• Supporting the person and family by improving the care they receive during all points of the illness, with specific goals like:
  • Enhancing the quality of life, resulting in long-term, consumer driven supports for employment, education, housing, medical care, socialization, and transportation

  • Reducing long-term dependence on care systems and increasing hope for wellness at all points of illness

  • Engage leaders and change agents, disrupting the status quo, accelerating knowledge sharing, informing policy discussion, and rewarding impact

  • Advance mental health literacy by promoting early identification of mental disorders, reducing stigma, and enhancing help-seeking behaviors

Giving Strategy

The Foundation has two deadlines each year for proposals for Ohio/Great Lake Region Grants, depending on project topic. You may apply for one round or the other, and request funding for only one project in your proposal.

Ohio and Other Great Lakes Grants

The Foundation devotes most of its resources to grants for organizations in Ohio and portions of the other seven states in the Great Lakes watershed (including IL, IN, MI, WI, Western PA, Upstate NY, and Northeastern MN), reflecting the origin of Mr. Scott’s assets. We seek innovative, cost-effective projects that demonstrate our region’s commitment to improving the well-being of animals, especially those in underserved areas or belonging to disadvantaged social groups. We prefer initiatives that are metropolitan, multi-county, statewide or regional or involve collaborations among multiple agencies. Requests from small organizations with localized impact are less likely to be funded. Successful applicants will pursue a high quality of life for individual animals and improve the situation of significant numbers of animals.

We began in 1986 as the parent company of The Community Hospital of Springfield and Clark County, and we are the surviving entity of the merger of CHF and Community Hospital Independent Endowment Fund in 2009.

Types of Funding

• Program grants support new programs, continuing programs, or expansion of successful ongoing programs.

Mental Health and Substance Abuse

Sexual Health

• Reduce rates of sexually transmitted infections and reduce rates of teen pregnancies. Reproductive health education programs must be evidence-based and comprehensive.

The Robert Wood Johnson Foundation defines health equity as giving everyone a fair and just opportunity to be as healthy as possible. Health Equity encompasses factors that, when addressed, decrease disparities.

About School-Based Healthcare Solutions Network (SBHSN).

Utilizing a unique framework of funding systems offered by the Department of Health and Human Services, managed care organizations, health insurers, and private donors, SBHSN promotes a system of care model (Coaching Model℠) offering a mix of evidenced-based intervention, prevention, and care coordination services to children in grades K-12. The Coaching Model aims to expand quality mental healthcare access on public school campuses and improve children's social, emotional, behavioral, family, and wellness outcomes.

School-Based Mental Health Implementation Grant

In response to the growing number of students who need mental health counseling, the School-Based Healthcare Solutions Network (SBHSN) is accepting applications from Local Education Agencies (LEA), Public and Private Universities, State and local Colleges, Charter School Management Companies, Public Schools, Charter Schools, and Non-Profit Organizations (501c3) to implement and expand mental health program services on local school campuses. Grantees will receive direct funding and reimbursement to support the following activities: 

• Expanding access to School-Based Social and Emotional Learning (SEL).
• Coordinating mental healthcare services with school administration and staff. 
• Delivering mental healthcare services and coordinating academic-support activities to students with a history of attendance, behavior, and poor academic performance.

FUNDING

5-Years, renewable based on meeting performance goals 5-year award ceiling is $5,500,000.

Community Grant Fund

Grant decisions will be made by our employee Community Grant Councils (CGC) based in each of the regions in which MGM Resorts International operates domestically. Each CGC meets and evaluates grant proposals from nonprofit agencies in its respective region to determine how the community grant funds will be allocated.

What Will We Fund

Funding

HealthPath issues a Request for Proposals (RFP) for Community Connections Grants which provides $8,000 for general operating support for organizations doing work in HealthPath’s focus areas. We also fund deep, concentrated investments which provides opportunities for multi-year funding. Requests for Proposals for deep, concentrated investments are issued approximately every three years. HealthPath may also make smaller grants to fund events or other projects aligned with our three focus areas.

Preparing Tomorrow's Healthcare Workforce

Patients report that they feel more heard and are more compliant with medical guidance when they share race/ethnicity with their healthcare practitioner. Nearly a third of the U.S. population is Black or Hispanic, yet the combined Black and Hispanic representation among oncologists is 8 percent and the combined Black, Indigenous and Hispanic representation among pharmacists is 10.7 percent. Closing the gap between diverse representation among the general population and among healthcare practitioners will improve health equity and patient outcomes.

Accelerating Crisis Response

With the increased frequency and intensity of climate events, more people across North America need temporary or extended shelter, as well as food and medications, during and in the aftermath of crises. And with 10 percent of the population in both Canada and the U.S. living in food insecure households, programs to provide regular, nutritious meals to children, families and seniors can reduce chronic disease and improve long-term health.

Many nonprofit organizations are working to make our community a smarter, healthier, cleaner, and more eco-friendly place in an effort to protect the Earth’s environment. Originally established in 2011 by a committed group of donors, The Columbus Foundation’s Green Funds seek to support these organizations, foster dialogue around conservation issues, and facilitate projects that will make an impact in central Ohio today and in the future.        

The Green Funds advisory committee provides input on The Columbus Foundation's targeted grantmaking in environmental conservation and education. Additionally, in partnership with the Foundation, the Green Funds provide a $6,700 stipend for a qualifying student to work with a central Ohio environmental or conservation nonprofit for 10 weeks during the summer. Past fellowship sites include Broad Street Presbyterian Church, Friends of the Lower Olentangy Watershed (FLOW), Green Columbus, and Ohio Environmental Council.

 AmeriHealth Caritas Foundation Grant

Mission and Focus Areas

The AmeriHealth Caritas Foundation is dedicated to preventing and mitigating adverse childhood experiences (ACEs), which will help drive positive outcomes for children's health and help set a stronger foundation for a lifetime of wellness. In addition to preventing and mitigating ACEs, it promotes protective and compensatory childhood experiences (sometimes referred to as “PACEs”), which can counteract the effects of ACEs.

Community Solutions Challenge 

The Community Solutions Challenge (CSC), launched in 2021, works to advance health equity through the support of community-based nonprofit programming that prioritize the social, cultural, and linguistic needs of historically excluded and disenfranchised populations. To date, CSC has provided more than $2.6 million to over 100 local nonprofit programs working to address health inequities and advance opportunities in STEM among underserved communities.

  • Increase outreach and information, taking into consideration Clark County populations who may be at higher risk or more vulnerable to disparate health outcomes.
  • Individuals with congestive heart failure will manage their disease and will decrease hospital re-admissions for congestive heart failure.
  • Patients with diabetes will manage their disease outside of taking medication alone.
    • Decrease the number of asthma attacks that require emergency services/treatment by implementing home-based environmental assessments and interventions.

Human Services-

Meeting human needs through an interdisciplinary knowledge base, focusing on prevention as well as remediation of problems, and maintaining a commitment to improving the overall quality of life is the focus of our human services program

• To Help Families and Individuals Become Stable and Financially Independent
  • To assist families and individuals in meeting emergency needs to stabilize a crisis, and for which no other or inadequate funding sources are available.
    • Examples: emergency assistance with food, clothing, shelter, crisis intervention or refuge in abuse cases.
  • To provide services that prevent or intervene in cases of family breakdown, violence or poverty.
    • • To assist families and individuals in removing barriers to obtaining and maintaining economic self-sufficiency. Examples: child care, transportation, transitional housing, and rehabilitation programs.
  • To assist individuals with physical or developmental disabilities in maintaining an independent or semi-independent lifestyle.
• To Promote Positive Outcomes For All People
  • To foster good relationships between youth, especially minority youth, and law enforcement.
  • To provide youth, especially those most at risk, with the skills, knowledge and a variety of other personal and social assets to function well during adolescence and adulthood.
  • To provide senior citizens, especially those most at risk, with the opportunity to continue contributing to society while having the best quality of life.

We also provide field of interest funding from endowments created by donors directed to a broad area reflecting their personal interests. There is no separate application for this funding. All applications are evaluated for their relevance to these areas which include:

• Animal Causes ( Spay/Neuter)
•  Arts (preforming arts in the schools and arts for individuals with a diagnosed mental illness)
• Children and Youth
• Conservation and Preservation
• Construction Trades (Training and Education)
• Environmental Activities

• Health (Cardiac & Respiratory Ailments, Cancer Care, Prenatal and Postpartum programs, Dental)
• Homeless Shelters
• People with Disabilities (Blind & Vision Impaired, Deaf & Hard of Hearing, Physical, Developmental)
