Eligible organizations include non-profits and public agencies, while grants generally do not cover operating expenses or support sectarian purposes. The Saint Paul & Minnesota Foundation's Community Solutions Grant Program aims to enhance the quality of life in the East Metro by supporting organizations and initiatives that are shaped by and benefit local residents. Through general operating, project, and capital support, the program prioritizes funding for community and economic development, health and human services, and youth and education initiatives, fostering sustainable growth in Dakota, Ramsey, and Washington counties.

The Valero Energy Foundation Grants support nonprofit organizations that align with their mission to improve the quality of life in communities where Valero operates. With a focus on basic needs, health care, education, and civic initiatives, the foundation prioritizes funding requests from 501(c)(3) organizations. In 2019, it provided approximately $40 million to support disadvantaged children and families, emphasizing a commitment to corporate citizenship and community well-being.

About Us

The Duluth Superior Area Community Foundation was established in 1983 by visionary community leaders. We are a collection of hundreds of endowed funds established by individuals, families, private foundations, and businesses to enhance the quality of life in our region. Since our inception, we have distributed more than $40 million in grants and scholarships and currently administer over 360 different funds, each with its own charitable purpose. The Duluth Superior Area Community Foundation promotes private giving for the public good.

Community Opportunity Fund

The Community Opportunity Fund is at the heart of our work at Boreal Waters Community Foundation. It’s how we connect generosity with possibility to support bold ideas, local leadership, and long-term solutions across northeastern Minnesota and northwestern Wisconsin.

Each year, this fund helps nonprofits tackle critical challenges, strengthen communities, and ensure that everyone in our region can thrive.

A Grant Program Rooted in Community and Collective Generosity

As our region’s permanent civic endowment, the Community Opportunity Fund helps nonprofits and community groups respond to challenges, create solutions, and build a better future. In 2023, we restructured the fund to offer larger, more flexible grants—supporting not just programs, but long-term vision and systems change.

We focus on these interconnected areas:

Community Opportunity Fund: Resilience Grant Focus

Projects must enhance the ability of organizations, families, or communities to anticipate, adapt to, and recover from challenges, creating sustainable, long-term solutions that reduce risk and promote resilience.

Examples include:

• Leveraging partnerships and resources to implement scalable, lasting solutions that strengthen community resilience.
• Expanding access to knowledge, training, and tools that improve economic, social, or environmental stability for individuals and families.
• Developing community-driven solutions that address housing stability, food security, workforce resilience, or climate adaptation.
• Applying innovative or proven strategies that increase a community’s ability to prepare for and respond to systemic challenges (e.g., disaster preparedness, economic shifts, public health crises).

What We Fund

We support a wide range of community-driven, equity-centered work. Funding can be used for:

• Program or Project Support: To launch, expand, or sustain work in Opportunity, Resilience, or Belonging
• General Operating Support: To build strength and stability
• Capacity Building: To grow organizational effectiveness or leadership
• Community-Led Solutions: Especially those involving lived experience and cross-sector collaboration
• Systems Change and Upstream Impact: Projects that address root causes—not just symptoms

The Joyce Foundation's Education & Economic Mobility Grants aim to close income and race disparities in college and career success. The foundation prioritizes equitable access to high-quality education, supporting policies for effective educators, high school graduation, and affordable college credentials. Focused on racial equity and economic mobility, it addresses the needs of historically underserved young people in the Great Lakes region and invests in research, policy development, and advocacy to help them recover from the COVID-19 pandemic.

The Fred C. & Katherine B. Andersen Foundation Grant focuses on enhancing the quality of life in the St. Croix Valley of Minnesota and Wisconsin. It supports 501(c)(3) nonprofit organizations with priorities in healthcare, education, housing, human services, civic initiatives, and environmental education. While capital requests may be considered, the foundation primarily funds operational and programmatic needs. Organizations outside the geographic area may be considered if they align with the foundation's funding priorities.

The WACF Opportunity Gap Grant aims to address the disparities in opportunities for children and families, particularly those from low-income backgrounds. By funding innovative projects focused on early childhood education, K-12 engagement, and support for stable families, this grant encourages the development of essential life skills. Organizations in Kandiyohi County, MN, are invited to apply for funding to create impactful programs that promote success and inclusion for underserved youth, with a maximum capital grant of $20,000.

The Greater Pine Area Endowment Grant provides vital funding to support long-term economic and community development initiatives within ISD 578. This grant focuses on projects that create quality jobs, enhance community pride, and improve the lives of vulnerable populations. Organizations eligible for funding include 501(c)(3) nonprofits and local government units, aiming to foster growth and well-being in the greater Pine area.

The Elmer L. & Eleanor J. Andersen Foundation Legacy Grants, a part of the Minneapolis Foundation, has been enhancing lives since 1957 through family grantmaking. With a focus on arts, education, and social change, these grants support Minnesota organizations, particularly in the Twin Cities. They prioritize funding for operational projects rather than capital campaigns, ensuring community engagement and sustainability. Eligible applicants are 501(c)(3) nonprofits with requests typically between $1,000 and $3,000.

The Grand Rapids Area Community Foundation, established in 1994, aims to enhance the quality of life in the Greater Itasca Area through philanthropic efforts. Governed by a dedicated Board of Directors, the foundation awards grants to nonprofits addressing local needs across various sectors, including education and the arts. With over 30 years of experience, it connects generous donors with community needs, fostering collaboration and compassion to create lasting, positive change.

The John T. & Elizabeth C. Adams Arts Fund Grant, established by the Duluth Superior Area Community Foundation, aims to enhance artistic quality in the Duluth-Superior area. It supports programs that enrich performances and artistic services, promoting cultural growth. Eligible organizations include 501(c)(3) nonprofits and governmental entities in the region, which encompasses parts of Wisconsin and Minnesota, as well as specific tribal nations. The fund is committed to fostering community through the arts.

The SACF Great Idea Competition, hosted by the Stillwater Area Community Foundation, invites innovative ideas aimed at enhancing local communities. With grants up to $10,000, applicants can propose projects that beautify, engage, or support underserved residents. Successful submissions should demonstrate community benefit and aim for completion within 12-18 months. Preference is given to first-time applicants in the last three years, fostering fresh contributions to community development.

The Central Minnesota Women's Fund, established in 2002, aims to empower women and girls within a 30-mile radius of St. Cloud. By collaborating with local nonprofits, the Fund focuses on enhancing self-esteem, educational opportunities, and economic independence for women of all ages. It prioritizes initiatives that support diversity, equity, and inclusion, ensuring that vulnerable populations receive the resources they need for a better quality of life.

The Samuel F. Atkins and Barbara H. Atkins Memorial Fund Grant, managed by the Duluth Superior Area Community Foundation, supports projects that assist low-income individuals and address animal welfare. Eligible organizations include 501(c)(3) nonprofits, governmental entities, and tribal governments located in specific counties in Wisconsin and Minnesota. The fund prioritizes projects demonstrating financial need, including emergency services and training programs for the physically disabled. This grant exemplifies the foundation's commitment to enhancing community welfare.

The Environmental Initiative Grant Program by the Laura Jane Musser Fund aims to support public and nonprofit entities in enhancing the ecological integrity of open spaces. It promotes community involvement in planning and implementing projects that improve quality of life and public health while protecting ecosystems. Grants range from $8,000 for planning to $35,000 for implementation, targeting projects in specific states, fostering sustainability, and ensuring active local participation.

The Roseau Area Community Fund Grant offers up to $8,100 for projects enhancing the quality of life for residents and visitors in the Roseau School District area. Funded by the Northwest Minnesota Foundation, it supports nonprofits and public entities in diverse areas such as leisure, arts, and education. Applications are encouraged for inclusive projects that serve a broad range of participants, fostering community empowerment and growth. This initiative aims to connect people with opportunities in Northwest Minnesota.

The Mayo Clinic Community Contributions Program in Rochester offers event sponsorship to enhance community health and well-being. They review applications bi-monthly, encouraging submissions at least twelve weeks prior to events. This initiative supports various community programs, including human services and arts enrichment, aligning with their mission to improve lives. Non-profit organizations in Olmsted County can apply once per year, with funding typically capped at 20% of their budget, excluding specific events like conferences and runs.

The Mayo Clinic Community Contributions Program in Rochester provides funding opportunities for non-profit organizations to support various initiatives, including human services, education, and arts enrichment. Eligible 501(c)(3) organizations can apply for grants up to $5,000 once per fiscal year. The program aims to enhance community well-being while aligning with Mayo Clinic's mission of advancing patient care and promoting a healthy environment for all.

The Black Oak Getty Community Foundation Grant Program, managed by the Initiative Foundation, aims to enhance the quality of life in the Sauk Centre area by funding projects that promote community development, educational growth, and responsible resource stewardship. Grants are available to local governments and 501(c)(3) nonprofits in Central Minnesota, with applications accepted year-round for quarterly awards through a competitive review process.

The Sheltering Arms Foundation Grant supports high-quality direct-service programs for children aged 0-12, focusing on early childhood and youth development along with advocacy efforts. The foundation aims to diminish opportunity gaps and enhance public commitment to children's well-being in Minnesota. Programs must be culturally appropriate and involve family engagement, ensuring children are socially and emotionally ready for kindergarten and prepared for academic success by 7th grade. Eligible organizations must be non-profits based in Minnesota.

The AGRI Urban Agriculture Grant Program, managed by the Minnesota Department of Agriculture, promotes urban youth agricultural education and community development in urban areas. With a total funding of $1.87 million available this fiscal year, grants ranging from $5,000 to $100,000 can help organizations obtain necessary resources. Eligible projects must support urban agriculture initiatives and can be located in cities with populations over 5,000 or on tribal lands, fostering resilience in local agricultural economies.

The St. Croix Valley Foundation serves six counties bordering the St. Croix River through local partnerships and place-based philanthropy. We serve:

• Minnesota: Chisago County, Washington County
• Wisconsin: Burnett County, Pierce County, Polk County, St. Croix County

Since our founding in 1995, we’ve:

• Grown to 500+ charitable funds and $100M+ in assets
• Facilitated $100M+ in grants and scholarships, including $5.8 million in 2024
• Partnered with local community affiliates led by volunteers who help guide grantmaking, grow local endowments, and connect donors to opportunities close to home.

Humane Organization Grant Program 

Mission

To enhance the quality of life of shelter/ rescue animals and to increase their chances for adoption. 

The St. Croix Valley Foundation (SCVF) Humane Organization grant program funded by the Compassionate Animal Fund, is accepting applications (invitation only) from Managed Open Admission humane organizations located in the upper Midwest. The grants, ranging up to $3,000, can cover items on your “wish list” including food, supplies, infrastructure needs, and veterinary cost. 

Funding Criteria

Grants are intended to provide funds for items such as food, supplies, medicine, spay/neuter programs (for in-house animals to aid in adoption) newsletters, or other needs and/or programs that most benefit the humane organization.

​We understand that shelters may differ in the services or alternatives they offer during the waiting period prior to intake. If your facility is at capacity, you must provide a clear statement outlining how emergency surrenders and stray animals are handled, including the procedures your organization follows to operate as an Open Admission shelter.  

The Warroad Area Community Fund, part of the Northwest Minnesota Foundation, aims to enhance the quality of life for residents and visitors in Warroad, Minnesota. By supporting charitable, educational, and public projects, the fund facilitates community development and fosters collaboration. With over 430 community funds, the Northwest Minnesota Foundation promotes philanthropy and provides resources for local organizations to thrive, ensuring a positive impact in the region.
