Community Investment Grant

With thanks to our members, we award $300,000 in grants annually to deserving organizations.

Our Community Investment Program provides grants to local non-profit organizations twice per year. An employee committee reviews all applications and then makes recommendations to our Board of Directors who approves grant recipients.

HAF+WRCF grant funding supports charitable programs and projects in our region (Humboldt, Del Norte, and Trinity counties in California, and Curry County, Oregon). 

Angel Fund

Grant Details

The Angel Fund provides small grants to support the unmet health needs of Humboldt County residents. Grants are made on a one-time basis, per person, per 365-day period. Items that are of a recurrent nature are generally not funded.

Average grants range in size from $50 – $250 (grants in excess of $500 are seldom approved). Decisions to grant funds are contingent upon funding criteria and the availability of funds at the time of review. 

There is a two-week turnaround processing time required for application review and check processing. The committee meets every Tuesday, with the exception of holidays. Occasionally the committee will ask for additional information before making a decision. This will often result in a longer turn-around time.

Pacific Redwoods Missing and Murdered Indigenous Peoples Crisis Action Fund

The Pacific Redwoods Missing and Murdered Indigenous Peoples Crisis Action Fund supports work being done to address the Missing and Murdered Indigenous Peoples crisis in Northern California. Specifically, by providing grants to Tribes and non-profit organizations, the grants will support strengthening organizing, advocacy, technical assistance and capacity building for programs working to advance efforts in California.

Average grant size:

• $5,000 -$7,000

Applications will be reviewed on a monthly basis.

The McConnell Fund, established in 2001 by the Community Foundation of the North State, aims to enhance communities in Shasta, Siskiyou, Tehama, Trinity, and Modoc counties through grants up to $50,000. It focuses on funding projects in areas such as arts, recreation, and social services, while prioritizing nonprofits and public entities. Eligible applicants can seek financial support for equipment and building-related initiatives, reinforcing the foundation's commitment to community development and philanthropy.

The Listos California Regional Grant Program aims to enhance disaster preparedness in California's Inland Region by supporting nonprofits that serve multiple counties. The program prioritizes equity and targets areas at high risk for disasters, enabling organizations to provide essential training and resources to diverse communities disproportionately affected by emergencies. Through collaboration with local nonprofits, it seeks to improve community resilience and response capabilities to future disasters.

HAF+WRCF grant funding supports charitable programs and projects in our region (Humboldt, Del Norte, and Trinity counties in California, and Curry County, Oregon). 

General Inquiry

Submit a general grant inquiry if you have reviewed the current grant opportunities offered by HAF+WRCF and do not see one that fits your organization’s needs. Submitting the inquiry will allow our team to learn about your project, assess what resources we may have available and direct you to the appropriate resource(s) at the foundation or otherwise. Please note, due to a high volume of funding requests there may be a delay in contact time.

Nonprofit organizations and public agencies hosting single events that promote health, racial equity, or community well-being in Trinity County, California can seek sponsorship support. Sierra Health Foundation provides limited event sponsorships within its Northern California funding region, with quarterly deadlines and decisions made within six weeks; events cannot be funded after they occur.

The Richard Reed Foundation Grant supports small, innovative non-profit organizations in Colorado and Northern California that aim to improve community welfare through initiatives in mental health, child development, environmental impact, and animal welfare. Applications are due by May 22, 2025, while Native American entities can apply until September 24, 2025, or until funds are exhausted. Trinity County, California Catholic ministries and diocesan offices in approved Extension Dioceses can access funding through Catholic Extension to sustain core pastoral and administrative services. Grants support salary subsidies for priests, women religious, lay leaders, and administrators, as well as essential operating costs like heating, minister travel, and other basic resources in under-resourced communities.

The Building Leaders Grants by Catholic Extension aim to enhance the recruitment, education, and ongoing formation of church leaders. This initiative provides critical funding for the professional development of both ordained and lay leaders in mission dioceses. By fostering partnerships with various organizations, it addresses the need for trained ministers and supports various funding areas, including seminarian sponsorship and diaconate formation, ensuring a robust future for church leadership.

The van Loben Sels/RembeRock Foundation primarily funds 501(c)(3) organizations that provide direct legal services in Northern California. While the Foundation favors established relationships, new applicants are welcome, particularly in remote areas where legal services are scarce. Typical grant amounts range from $7,500 to $30,000, with larger grants reserved for invited requests. Focus areas include legal assistance for vulnerable populations and support for Court Appointed Special Advocates (CASA) programs.

The Engaging Young Catholics Grants aim to support ministries that provide faith formation to children, teens, young adults, and families. By focusing on the pastoral needs of young Catholics, the program enhances community vibrancy and fosters new leadership within the church. Catholic Extension prioritizes operational support and seed funding for initiatives that develop youth and young adult ministries, ensuring that dioceses can effectively reach and engage younger generations in their faith.

Trinity Trust

The Trinity Trust makes grants exclusively for the benefit of the residents of Trinity County California.

Trinity County Summer Youth Program

For the past 20 years Trinity Trust has been committed to supporting programs that provide opportunities for children and youth to learn, play and develop in a safe, productive setting. Grants will be awarded to non-profit organizations serving Trinity County youth for programs offered between June 1 and September 1.

Average Grant Size: The average grant awarded will be $500. However, we recognize that some Summer Programs have special needs, and will consider applications of over $500 in some circumstances.

Grant resources are limited, so we ask that you apply for only what is sincerely needed. This funding is stretched to meet the needs of an enormous number of extremely valuable Summer Programs in Trinity County, and we want to provide support to as many programs as possible.

Nonprofit and public benefit organizations in Trinity County, California providing basic needs-focused winter holiday assistance can apply for Humboldt Area Foundation’s Holiday Funding Partnership grants, with awards of US $500 - US $2,000. Eligible programs must serve Humboldt, Del Norte, Trinity, and/or Curry County and take place between November 15 and January 1.

Tribal Nations, nonprofits, community partnerships, and individual California Indian culture bearers in Trinity County, California can receive US $1,000 - US $10,000 for projects rooted in Native cultures, arts, and traditional practices. Humboldt Area Foundation’s Native Cultures Fund supports intergenerational knowledge transmission, including language, ceremony, sacred sites, arts, stories, and land stewardship across California tribal territories.

Nonprofit and public benefit Christian organizations in Trinity County, California can apply for grants up to US $5,000 to support charitable programs and projects, with an emphasis on Lutheran activities. The Hansen Family Trust Christian Endowment Fund, managed by Humboldt Area Foundation and Wild Rivers Community Foundation, also supports related work in nearby rural and native communities.

Trinity County, California nonprofits, public schools, and school districts working on youth, family, and education programs can access funding through the S H Cowell Foundation to strengthen services in high-poverty communities. Grants may support family resource centers, K–12 school initiatives, youth development and mental health programs, community organizing, and related community development efforts.

The Sacramento-Shasta Chapter of The Wildlife Society offers a Professional Research Grant aimed at supporting professionals involved in wildlife research within specific counties. This initiative promotes academic excellence in wildlife biology and aligns with the organization's mission to enhance wildlife conservation efforts. Applicants are encouraged to demonstrate how their research aligns with the chapter's objectives, ensuring the funding contributes positively to local wildlife issues and academic development.

Mission

The Bill Graham Memorial Foundation, was formed in January of 2008 in memory of the legendary rock impresario, Bill Graham. The foundation is a public charity that is funded through individual and corporate contributions and grants.

The Foundation is guided by a broad-based group which includes Bill’s sons, several former long-time employees of Bill Graham Presents and other community leaders.

The Mission of the Bill Graham Memorial Foundation is the administration of grants primarily in the areas of music, the arts and education while also supporting social work, environmental protection and spiritual and compassionate projects in the community. The Foundation also organizes and implements education and outreach programs, exhibitions and other events and projects in like areas which carry Bill Graham’s life story forward and keep his spirit of philanthropy alive.

The Sustainable Recreation, Tourism, and Equitable Outdoor Access Directed Grant Program (2025-2027) supports innovative projects aimed at enhancing sustainable recreation and tourism in the Sierra-Cascade region. Key goals include improving public access to nature, mitigating overuse impacts on resources, and fostering sustainable recreation economies. Projects eligible for funding must focus on climate resilience, equitable access, or landscape-scale assessments, all ensuring multiple benefits for community education and environmental protection.
