Best Alameda County Grants for Nonprofits in California

Kala Art Institute

Founded in 1974 by Archana Horsting and Yuzo Nakano as an international workshop rooted in the local community and forum for ideas, Kala Art Institute provides exceptional facilities to professional artists working in and across all forms of printmaking, digital media, film, video, and sound, book arts, photography, and performance.

Kala Art Institute’s mission is to help artists sustain their creative work over time through its Artist-in-Residence and Fellowship Programs, and to engage the community through exhibitions, public programs, and education.

Curatorial Fellowship Program

We are excited to launch a new Curatorial Fellowship this cycle at Kala. For the inaugural program, we are accepting applications from Bay Area curators, artists, and cultural workers to provide research and exhibition development opportunities. The year-long program culminates in an 8-10 week exhibition in the Kala Gallery.

Curatorial Fellowship Resources

For this pilot program, Kala will select and support one Curatorial Fellow who will receive a $3000 stipend, an available desk in the gallery office for exhibition research and development, a Kala art class or workshop, access to Kala’s permanent collection of over 2,500 prints and works on paper, mentorship by Victoria Sung, Phyllis C. Wattis Senior Curator at Berkeley Art Museum & Pacific Film Archive, support from Kala’s exhibitions and collections team, Mayumi Hamanaka and Sonya Castillo, and exhibition support (Kala will pay an additional 40 hours directly to Kala’s installers for for install/deinstall and up to $3,000 for artist honoraria, shipping, materials, and other misc exhibition costs for the Curatorial Fellow’s 8-10 week exhibition in the Kala Gallery to take place between September 2027 – January 2028.)

Grants are limited to programs in Contra Costa and Alameda counties, with funding not available for individual projects or capital equipment. The Arts Leadership Residency, offered by Theatre Bay Area, provides a transformative opportunity for aspiring artistic and managing directors to gain hands-on experience in Bay Area theatres. Over a 12-16 week period, residents will work closely with established leaders, engage in significant projects, and enhance their skills in a supportive environment. This initiative emphasizes mentorship, professional growth, and fostering diversity within the arts community, ensuring that underrepresented voices have access to vital resources and opportunities.

Guidelines

The Banks Family Foundation provides grants to organizations and agencies located in Northern Alameda Country. The Foundation is interested in providing funding for programs that directly serve the health, education and welfare of youth.

Grants may range from a few hundred dollars up to $15,000. In unique circumstances, we would consider a more significant grant for a program having a major impact in our areas of interest.

The Banks Family Foundation accepts grant applications on a continuous basis. Grant disbursements are made annually. The applications must be consistent with the mission and guidelines established by the Trustees. The Trustees appreciate applications that are concise and accurate.

Grant disbursements are scheduled to be made annually in December. Applications should be received by November 1 by U.S. mail.

The CA$H Theatre Grant - CA$H Sustains, offered by Theatre Bay Area, provides crucial financial support to individual artists and small theatre companies in the San Francisco Bay Area. This grant aims to cover general operating costs and is open once a year during the fall granting cycle. Founded in 1999, the program emphasizes equity and inclusion, supporting innovative projects and performances that enhance the cultural landscape and accessibility of the arts in the community.

Christopher Wellington Moore Memorial Scholarship

The Christopher Wellington Moore Memorial Scholarship is a $20,000 award to one graduating senior at Castlemont High School, McClymonds High School, Oakland High School or Skyline High School in Oakland, CA who has been accepted to a 4-year university pursuing a degree in music or education. The award will be disbursed in four annual installments of $5,000 to the recipient's chosen university.   

Benjamin Moore & Co. Charitable Giving is dedicated to uplifting North American communities through support for educational programs, housing development, and preservation efforts. The initiative emphasizes philanthropy through financial and in-kind donations, alongside volunteer work from employees. The Artist-in-Residence Program at Kala Art Institute provides artists with 24-hour access to various creative facilities, including printmaking workshops and digital labs. With subsidized and fully funded residency options available, including specific programs for veterans and awards, Kala supports artists in advancing their skills and projects in a collaborative environment.

The Bridge Association of REALTORS Community Foundation Grants aims to financially support vital community programs that promote housing, youth opportunities, and diversity. The foundation focuses on Youth Arts and Education, Senior Services, and Workforce Housing, providing grants to non-profits in Albany, Berkeley, Emeryville, Kensington, Oakland, and Piedmont. With an emphasis on specific projects, eligible organizations must have tax-exempt status and demonstrate a commitment to addressing pressing community needs.

The CA$H Theatre Grant, provided by Theatre Bay Area, supports fully-produced performances of artistic projects that are publicly accessible. This grant aims to empower individual artists and small theatre companies in the San Francisco Bay Area, promoting a diverse cultural landscape. Since its inception in 1999, CA$H has facilitated a range of projects, from traditional productions to innovative hybrid experiences, emphasizing the importance of equity and inclusion in the arts.

The NFL Foundation Grassroots Program, in partnership with the Local Initiatives Support Corporation (LISC), aims to enhance the quality, safety, and accessibility of community football fields. Grants range from $15,000 to $175,000, depending on project stages, with a focus on accessibility and sustainability. The program prioritizes projects that are publicly accessible for at least a month and that demonstrate measurable outcomes and evaluations.

The PVF Excursion Grants provide funding of up to $1,000 for one-day classroom excursions, aimed at enriching educational experiences for students in low-income communities. Eligible applicants include preschool and TK-3 teachers in San Mateo and Santa Clara Counties. This initiative helps cover costs for transportation, admission, and meals, allowing students to explore places like museums, beaches, and parks. Note that overnight trips are not funded.

The PVF Science Resource Grants, offered by the Philanthropic Ventures Foundation, provide funding up to $500 for TK-12 teachers at low-income public schools in select California counties. These grants aim to enhance science instruction through hands-on materials, focusing on life sciences and chemistry. Eligible applicants can request grants for items such as safety goggles, lab coats, and microscopes, with a limit of three grants per school and one per teacher, encouraging collaborative applications.

The PVF Social Worker/CASA Grants program supports vulnerable youth in foster care by providing grants of up to $500 to Social Workers and Court Appointed Special Advocates (CASAs). These funds can address critical needs such as medical care, educational supplies, and extracurricular activities. Applications are open for the 2026-2027 school year, and eligible applicants include Social Workers and CASAs in various California counties. The Foundation is dedicated to innovative grantmaking that maximizes philanthropic impact.
