Background & Purpose

The California Arts Council (CAC) is a statewide agency committed to serving California artists, arts organizations, and communities of all sizes and needs. Guided by racial equity principles, the CAC continuously evaluates its grantmaking practices to ensure fair and inclusive funding opportunities that sustain a vibrant, safe, and resilient creative ecosystem across the state.

Through regionally based Administering Organizations (AOs), the Individual Artists Fellowship (IAF) program uplifts and celebrates California artists across all disciplines and traditions, highlights their excellence and acknowledges their leadership in shaping traditional and contemporary cultures. The program includes three fellowship tiers with a different award amount:

CAC Emerging Artist Fellows – $5,000

Emerging artists are those in the beginning stages of making their work public and engaging the larger community in their practice.

CAC Established Artist Fellows – $10,000

Artists in the Established tier regularly make their work public and engage the larger community in their practice.

CAC Legacy Artist Fellows – $50,000

Artists in the Legacy tier can point to a significant body of work, produced over a substantial period of time, that has engaged their communities and that has made significant social impact.

The program strengthens the regional arts workforce by investing directly in artists whose work contributes to the cultural vitality of their communities.

The Variety Sunshine Coach Grant Program aids children with special needs in Southern California by providing essential resources for mobility, education, and healthcare. Celebrating over 30 years, this initiative offers specially equipped Sunshine Coaches to transport children to necessary services. Organizations must be 501(c)(3) and demonstrate a commitment to serving children aged 0-18. By removing barriers, the program ensures inclusivity and opportunity for every child in the community.

L3Harris Technologies is collaborating with PLTW to enhance STEM education for PreK-12 students. The TMCity Foundation Grant supports innovative neurocognitive research and mental health initiatives, offering funding between $25,000 and $250,000. Organizations should be 501(c)(3) and focus on healthcare solutions for brain-related ailments. Applications are accepted via a rolling letter of inquiry, followed by a detailed application if interested. The Foundation prioritizes projects based in Southern California and Greater Boston, aiming to advance understanding of mental health through cutting-edge research and technologies.

The Community Clean Energy Grant Program, launched by San Diego Community Power (SDCP) in March 2023, aims to fund local clean energy projects through grants ranging from $25,000 to $100,000. The Alliance Healthcare Foundation offers Mission Support Grants to nonprofit organizations in San Diego, providing unrestricted funding between $25,000 and $100,000 annually for three years. AHF prioritizes organizations that demonstrate measurable impact and serve a significant number of BIPOC clients, ensuring resources are allocated where they are most needed to combat health disparities.

The Desert Tortoise Council offers a Regular Grants Program to support projects aimed at the conservation and management of desert tortoise populations and their habitats. Grant requests are accepted year-round, with priority given to emergency responses, impactful projects, and those that leverage additional funding. Grants are awarded based on availability and a majority vote by the Board, ensuring that significant conservation issues are addressed effectively.

The Waterwise Garden Grant, offered by KidsGardening and Hunter Industries, supports public and charter schools in San Diego County focusing on water conservation through gardening. In 2026, 25 schools will receive funding between $1,000 and $2,250, along with a $500 irrigation supply kit. Applicants must engage at least 15 youth and demonstrate a commitment to improving garden programs, with priority given to under-resourced communities.

The PLTW Computer Science program, supported by the Caterpillar Foundation, aims to enhance STEM education in underserved communities. This model enables us to engage and support a broad range of organizations across the globe to tackle some of the most pressing social issues of our time.

The Citi Foundation’s 2026 Community Finance Initiative commits $35 million to support programming that bolsters the financial stability, strength and safety of low-income households in the U.S.

Focus Areas

The Foundation seeks to support organizations advancing low-income household financial resilience in the United States across three focus areas:

Stabilize: Programs that help low-income households to build financial skills and confidence to manage daily finances and navigate financial stress.

• Financial coaching on budgeting, credit, debt reduction and savings strategies.
• Digital tools offering personalized financial guidance and product navigation.
• Assistance with public benefits and social safety net programs.

Strengthen: Programs that help low-income households build and repair credit, as well as short- and long-term financial assets.

• Financial products or services for credit building and credit repair.
• Initiatives to increase savings, including emergency funds.
• Support for homeownership, including readiness, preservation and long-term stability (e.g., first-time buyer assistance, preventing displacement and support systems for aging in place resources).

Safeguard: Programs that protect low-income household financial security by preventing and addressing financial losses.

• Education and support for the safe and confident use of digital financial tools.
• Fraud and scam awareness, prevention and recovery initiatives, including protection from identity theft.
• Interventions to help households recover from major financial shocks (e.g., healthcare costs, extended family care, job transitions or natural disasters).

Funding Opportunity

The Foundation plans to award 70 $500,000 (USD) grants (to be disbursed over two years) totaling $35 million to community organizations working in select communities where Citi has a presence.

The grants will be restricted and are anticipated to be disbursed in two annual payments in 2026 and 2027. Proposed projects should be for a term of 24 months, starting no sooner than August 1, 2026 and ending no later than December 31, 2028.

The Bessie Minor Swift Foundation Grant supports programs that enhance literacy and educational enrichment in communities served by Swift Communications. Grants are available to nonprofit organizations focused on developing literacy skills, STEM education, and interdisciplinary programs for children and youth. With funding ranging from $500 to $5,000, the foundation prioritizes initiatives that foster active citizenry and provide direct service to underserved populations.

Ready to Learn Grant

The Dr. Seuss Foundation and San Diego Foundation are now accepting applications from eligible nonprofit organizations to be considered for either a Ready to Learn grant, a Dr. Seuss Foundation Bright Futures grant, or both.

Since 2022, the Dr. Seuss Foundation (DSF) and San Diego Foundation (SDF) have collaborated to award nearly $5 million to local organizations offering high-quality early educational opportunities and programs for children and families in San Diego County. To date, this collaborative grantmaking effort has supported 40+ nonprofit partners in providing critical services to more than 70,000 individuals, including 37,000 children aged 0-5.

Launched in Spring 2025 through the support of a $15 million endowment established by the Dr. Seuss Foundation at SDF, the joint Ready to Learn initiative aims to provide sustainable, long-term funding to support early literacy efforts for children up to age 5 in the San Diego region for years to come.

Grant Goals

The Ready to Learn initiative supports the expansion of early literacy and learning opportunities for children up to age 5, with an emphasis on literacy and language competencies as key drivers of healthy development and school success.

Proposals will be considered for programs that pursue at least one of the following objectives:

• Expanding access to high-quality literacy and learning opportunities
• Building provider expertise in literacy instruction
• Promoting family-centered literacy and learning
• Addressing barriers to learning through whole-child, developmentally appropriate approaches

The Variety SoCal Grant aims to provide vital support to organizations dedicated to assisting children with special needs in Southern California. With a focus on health care, education, and mobility, the grant seeks to empower 501(c)(3) organizations that demonstrate a strong commitment to serving children aged birth to 18. By ensuring that at least 65% of total expenses are directed towards program services, the grant fosters impactful initiatives tailored to the unique needs of these children.

The PNC Foundation aims to enhance the lives of individuals in local communities through partnerships with nonprofit organizations. Their focus includes promoting educational opportunities, particularly for early childhood education, and supporting economic development initiatives. Grants are available for organizations that benefit low- to moderate-income families and enhance community growth. The foundation prioritizes programs that foster sustainability and diversity, ensuring a lasting impact on the communities they serve.

The San Marcos Community Foundation offers Regular Grants ranging from $1,500 to $10,000 to nonprofit organizations benefiting the residents of San Marcos. Established in 1987, the Foundation aims to enhance community quality of life through diverse programs in arts, health, education, and more. Eligible organizations must meet specific requirements, including tax-exempt status. The Foundation prioritizes applications with matching funds at its discretion, fostering a collaborative approach to community enrichment.

The KLA-Tencor Foundation's Education Opportunity Fund aims to enhance educational access, promote emotional well-being, and improve educational systems, particularly for under-resourced K-12 students. Grants between $50,000 and $250,000 are available for innovative projects that eliminate barriers to education and foster sustainable partnerships. Applicants must be nonprofit organizations with a significant impact in communities served by KLA, focusing on systemic change rather than direct student assistance.

L3Harris Technologies is expanding its partnership with Project Lead The Way (PLTW) to enhance STEM education for PreK-12 students. This initiative aims to support schools in launching or expanding PLTW Computer Science programs for the 2026-2027 academic year, focusing on diverse and economically challenged communities across multiple states. Eligible schools can receive grants to implement new courses, additional class periods, or teacher training, fostering a strong foundation in technology and engineering.
