GME Fellowship Expansion Grant - Rural Health Transformation Program

The Georgia Board of Health Care Workforce (GBHCW) announces the availability of grant funding to support the expansion of Graduate Medical Education (GME) Fellowship programs across rural Georgia through the Rural Health Transformation Program.

This initiative provides funding to rural hospitals, health systems, and academic partners to expand existing Fellowship programs by increasing Fellowship positions. The goal is to strengthen Georgia’s physician workforce by:

• Increasing training capacity in high-need specialties
• Expanding Fellowship opportunities in rural communities
• Improving long-term physician retention in underserved areas

Funding supports a net increase in filled Fellowship slots that serve rural counties and train physicians in core specialties critical to Georgia’s healthcare workforce needs.

Fellows supported under this program must complete training and commit to practicing in Georgia for a combined training and practice duration of at least five (5) years.

Program Requirements

• Programs must demonstrate a net increase in Fellowship positions using January 1, 2026, as the baseline.
• Funding is available only for new Fellowship slots that result in an actual increase in filled positions.

Available Slots & Funding Amount

• Up to 12 Fellowship slots are available statewide in approved areas.
• Each approved Fellowship slot will receive $200,000 per PGY year.
• Funding is distributed in two semi-annual payments of $100,000 each.
• Funding may be awarded for up to three (3) years per Fellowship slot.

Houston Rockets Scholarship

Benefiting graduating seniors from select high schools attending college in the Greater Houston area. Applications for this scholarship will be accepted on a first-come, first-served basis.

This is a renewable scholarship, meaning recipients can renew the award and claim multiple years of funding if they meet the GPA and enrollment requirements and complete the renewal application for each academic year they plan to be enrolled.

Renewal Durations - The scholarship is renewable for the following durations:

• 2-Year Degree – Renewable for 1 year after original award (up to 2 years of funding total)
• 4-Year Degree – Renewable for 3 years after original award (up to 4 years of funding total)

Previous Scholarship Recipients – Renewable for the years remaining until graduation (2 years for Class of 2024 and 3 years for Class of 2025)

Award Amounts - Multiple award recipients expected for the upcoming year. 

Award amounts vary by college/degree type:

• $5,000 for 2-Year Colleges/Degrees (up to $10,000 total across two years)
• $10,000 for 4-Year Colleges/Degrees (up to $40,000 total across four years)

What can the scholarship be used for?

The scholarship will be mailed directly to the student's college to be used towards tuition, required academic fees, and/or book expenses. 

Scholarship funding cannot be distributed directly to the student. Funding cannot be used for room and board, rent, meal plans, parking passes, or other similar living expenses.
