About the Banfield Foundation

Since 2015, Banfield Foundation has been making preventive care possible for the pets that need it most. Through grants and partnerships, we provide medical supplies and resources to nonprofit partners in need; support pets, people and communities in crisis; and enable veterinary professionals to deliver compassionate and inclusive preventive veterinary care in under resourced communities areas across the nation. We also leverage the expertise and passion of Banfield Pet Hospital, part of Mars Veterinary Health, and its Associates to care for pets in need. At the Banfield Foundation, we are committed to living our collective purpose: A BETTER WORLD FOR PETS.

Disaster Relief Grant

This grant program is for nonprofit animal welfare organizations and/or government agencies whose communities suffer the impact of natural or other disasters.

Grants will also be considered for organizations that have not been directly impacted by a disaster but are helping another organization in need such as the rescue and/or intake of animals. 

Grant funding can be used for:

• Medical supplies and veterinary care treatment for pets 
• Pet food, pet supplies, including crates, etc.
• Temporary shelter or boarding costs for rescued or at-risk pets
• Other immediately needed materials including cleaning supplies, tarps, bedding, blankets, etc. to keep pets safe and comfortable
• Transportation costs to rescue or relocate pets
• Other expenses related to providing temporary shelter for rescued pets including overtime salaries, rental equipment or facilities, cleanup costs, etc.
• Reimbursement up to three months post-disaster for expenses incurred and related to the above.

These activities are non-promotional in nature and can be accredited or non-accredited, and the programme and content are always decided independently from industry supporters.

The audience is identified and invited by the recipient organization and not by industry supporters. Examples include, but are not limited to, live or virtual events, webinars, online or print activities, and enduring medical educational materials.

Research and Advanced Academic Training:

Financial support provided to institutions/organisations to conduct Interventional/Non-Interventional research, Fellowships or other scientific/academic efforts.

Charity or Community Support:

Financial support is provided to non-profit organisations for initiatives that benefit patients and communities. Examples include but are not limited to:

Program Overview 

The main objective of the foundation is to carry on the legacy of Joseph and Vera Dresner by supporting the work of organizations in our focus areas. It was the Dresner’s mission that the foundation would provide a channel to improve the lives of people and animals in their communities. 

The foundation’s approach empowers community members to benefit from the grant investments that we make. We partner with organizations that are committed to creating opportunities for the underserved in our communities. Those partners include a wide-range of entities, including hospitals, community centers, and other nonprofits. 

Our goal is to provide organizations with the necessary resources, so they can continue offering services to those most in need. We seek to test innovative approaches, determine lessons from current commendable activities, and promote the adoption of creative thinking on a broad scale through direct grant making and support for research and other ventures that advance community support. 

We Offer 3 Types of Support: 

• Project – Development of new programs, expansion of existing programs, or continuation of sustainable, recognized effective current programming. 
• Capital – Equipment purchase, acquisition, construction and/or renovation of facilities. 
• Funding for special circumstances, in support of existing grantee  programs, will be considered on a case by case basis. Please note the foundation will not accept unsolicited proposals for this type of support. 

Our Focus Areas Include: 

Health 

We fund projects that support institutions conducting medical research and clinical trials specifically related to Myelodysplastic Syndromes. The foundation is equally interested in efforts that have broad and meaningful impact and focus on intervention and prevention beyond the boundaries of any one disease. 

Therefore, we seek to support a network of hospitals and community-based organizations that work to improve the health outcomes of these individuals through enhanced access to health care.

Youth and Family 

It is critical that disadvantaged, underserved, and special needs children have access to programs that allow them to learn and foster important life skills. We help organizations develop and sustain programs that empower children and their families and offer opportunity to improve their lives.

Regardless, if a child lives in poverty or has a chronic disease, it is essential that they have access to programs that encourage self-expression and move their lives forward in a meaningful way. Therefore, we support organizations that empower children and optimize their development by providing access to programs that promote academic, artistic, personal and social enhancement opportunities.

Animal Welfare 

We work with animal care organizations to make certain that they have the resources needed to ensure the best care and secure shelter for animals and offer corresponding public education initiatives.

The foundation works with animal welfare organizations to make sure they have the resources they need to advance their work. We are interested in supporting state-of-the art facilities and services. Animal welfare efforts that the foundation will consider are, but not limited to, providing adequate treatment resources, upgrading equipment, improving and maintaining facilities, aiding in the shelter of animals in communities, and public education initiatives.

Mission

The Fish Family Foundation of Maine is a faith based charitable organization located in Bangor, Maine. Founded in 2007, our mission is to provide resources for many initiatives including, but not limited to, missions, education scholarships, ministries, medical research, and employment creation. The Fish Family Foundation of Maine is primarily funded by the family. However, contributions from like minded individuals and organizations is appreciated. The Fish Family Foundation of Maine has a balanced strategy of making funds available for immediate needs, while also investing to build a perpetual earning endowment ensuring the Foundation's successful future.

Missions:

We support needs of missionary organizations including sponsorships for young people who wish to attend youth group sponsored mission trips. We ordinarily make one time contributions but on occasion have made up to a three year commitment. 

Education/Scholarships:

The Foundation makes scholarships available to Colleges, Universities, and other Schools for student enrollment and expenses. We also consider new construction, existing renovation, equipment, and support material contributions.

Independent Churches and Ministries:

We accept a wide variety of requests, including, but not limited to: materials, equipment, new construction, renovations, programs, and services. 

Medical Research:

We support medical research opportunities close to our hearts and organizations that our family and friends have experienced. 

Job Creation:

We Support organizations that fund entrepreneurs in impoverished areas to start small businesses providing services and employment to the community.

Requests are considered by the trustees the first week of each month. Foundation payments are made by paper check in US dollars and are reported to the appropriate tax agencies. While we certainly wish that we could contribute to all the applications that meet our funding criteria, there are times when when available funding is limited and we are not able to contribute to some very worthy causes. If we are not in a position to help in the timeline requested, we will keep the information on file for possible consideration in the future.

Health & WellnessFoundation gifts in this area are directed to qualified charitable organizations offering health-care services and information in Utah’s urban and rural areas, including grants for equipment, facilities, and program support for those involved in medical diagnosis, treatment and education, disease prevention, the promotion of healthy lifestyles, and the development of creative new ways to address health-care challenges. Preservation and Conservation Foundation gifts in this area are directed to qualified charitable organizations that preserve and protect the natural environment, and to those involved in historic preservation including the renovation and restoration of unique historic structures, and programs that foster an understanding and appreciation of the history of Utah and its many cultures.

Program Innovation and Growth

The Merlo Foundation recognizes that innovation is required to best deliver on the mission of a nonprofit organization and keep it responsive to real time challenges. The Merlo Foundation will consider grants that help fund both innovative strategic initiatives and the expansion of existing programs. Grants may be used to cover start-up costs and/or related staff member additions. Evidence of the capacity to assume financial responsibility of a new fixed cost (permanent staff position, program operational costs, etc.) will need to be addressed in the grant application.

Scholarships

Scholarship grants are primarily directed to organizations that educate youth, inclusive of faith-based educational institutions, athletic camps, and music and performing arts. The scholarships must be directed to students that would not be able to access the program offered without financial assistance. Established scholarship programs with written application process/eligibility required.

• Average amounts for one-time grants range from $5,000-$50,000
• Grants larger than $50,000 are usually structured as multiple year pledges.

Josiah Macy Jr. Foundation

We invest in educational projects that improve health by advancing the education and training of future health professionals.

Priorities

We aim to prepare future health professionals to meet the needs of the 21st century with a population that is the most diverse in U.S. history and who may live longer than any previous generation. We are focusing on the learning environments where our future health professionals train so that they learn not only prevention and the social determinants of health but are well prepared to care for people when they are ill. This means learning the scientific basis of disease and taking advantage of the discoveries and breakthroughs in diagnosis and treatment so that they make wise choices while providing compassionate care.

At the Josiah Macy Jr. Foundation, we foster innovation in clinical learning environments by investing in three areas:

Promoting Diversity, Equity, and Belonging

We must ensure that everyone who receives care and those who learn, teach, and work in clinical environments are treated equitably. Systemic inequities that reduce career satisfaction and limit advancement opportunities for health professionals from historically underrepresented communities, including people of color, women, people with disabilities, the LGBTQ+ community, members of some religious groups, and individuals from low-income households need solutions.

Increasing Collaboration Among Future Health Professionals

Students, residents, and graduate students historically learn and train as highly skilled, but largely autonomous, professionals. This “siloed” approach is obsolete and is being replaced by environments where health professionals and their learners work together as a high functioning team. This means promoting collaboration among health care providers, such as nurses, social workers, physicians pharmacists, and others so that learners in these environments are trained to provide the highest quality patient care as members of a collaborative team. Public health leaders play a critical role in promoting community health and preventing disease and are vital collaborators with the health care team.

Preparing Future Health Professionals to Navigate Ethical Dilemmas

To succeed today, health professionals need more than clinical skill. They must also be prepared to navigate the complex ethical dilemmas that arise when confronting barriers that conflict with professional ideals and aspirations. Those teaching in learning environments cannot anticipate every scenario, but they can equip future health professionals with essential tools for navigating dilemmas that arise when managing issues of patient access, end of life, interactions with other health professionals and many other complex situations.

The Just Health Fund is a Tides Foundation grantmaking initiative that delivers critical resources to community leaders on the front lines of protecting, providing, and ensuring health equity for marginalized groups.

Catalyze a Future of Health Equity and Opportunity

BIPOC and LGBTQ+ communities still face discriminatory medical, financial, legal, and environmental barriers to health. Yet the health equity efforts they lead routinely lose out to national legacy organizations on funding. The erosion of healthcare access has only exacerbated existing inequities, posing a serious threat to the health of communities of color and LGBTQ+ people and putting countless lives at risk.

The Just Health Fund makes bold, well-informed grants toward community-led solutions. Just Health Fund grants advance many facets of health equity, from reproductive justice and LGBTQ+ rights to racial justice and mental health.

Funding Priorities

We are committed to shifting power and resources to proximate leaders with subject matter expertise, lived experience, and grassroots connections to create localized solutions to generational healthcare challenges.

Advancing Health Equity

The health of marginalized people is in peril. Policies nationwide are increasingly criminalizing healthcare providers who serve them. The Just Health Fund works alongside legal experts to award bold, risk-aware, and responsive grants supporting culturally affirming care. Our current funding cycle focuses on reproductive justice. Our ultimate vision is to establish long-term support that breaks barriers to health equity by resourcing community leaders who work across health issues, including mental health, LGBTQ+ healthcare, and more.

Centering Community-Based Solutions

Grassroots leaders have both deep knowledge about the healthcare system and intimate experience with the harmful discrimination that has deeply affected marginalized people for generations. The Just Health Fund partners with these changemakers to ensure they have the resources to continue critical community-based work.  

Strengthening Grantmaking That Centers Proximate Leaders

Equipping more organizations to push for reproductive justice will help us make progress faster. The Just Health Fund strives to strengthen the work of reproductive justice and LGBTQ+ organizations that are actively grantmaking in this space.

We work across political divides to advance policies that strengthen democracy and protect human rights. We support a vast, trusted network of activists and advocates who are leading the struggle for democratic change in their countries. When these courageous individuals are attacked for their activism, journalism, or opposition to tyranny, we strive to keep them safe so that they may continue their important work.

Lifeline Embattled CSO Assistance Fund

The Lifeline Embattled CSO Assistance Fund provides emergency financial assistance to civil society organizations (CSOs) under threat or attack and rapid response advocacy and resiliency grants to support CSOs in responding to broader threats against civic space. Lifeline supports a variety of human rights CSOs, including human rights organizations, journalist associations, student groups, labor unions, think tanks, and others.

Types of Grants

• Emergency Assistance
  • Through Freedom House and Front Line Defenders, Lifeline provides small, short-term emergency grants to CSOs threatened because of their human rights work.
  • Emergency grants can address security, medical expenses, legal representation, prison visits, trial monitoring, temporary relocation, equipment replacement, and other urgently needed expenses.
• Advocacy Grants
  • Lifeline rapid response advocacy grants give local CSOs the resources to push back against closures of civic space as they arise.
  • Lifeline advocacy grants are highly flexible, and can support a wide variety of activities, such as community mobilization, policy and legal analysis, civil society coalition building, strategic litigation, awareness raising campaigns, and advocacy capacity building.
• Resiliency Grants
  • Lifeline rapid response resiliency grants provide support to threatened CSOs to avoid or mitigate the threats they face and help them continue to work.
  • These grants are flexible and support a range of activities including digital or physical security training; technical training on how to respond to restrictive legislation; building peer support networks, or establishing temporary collaborative spaces.

McElhattan Foundation Grants

Welcome to the McElhattan Foundation. We are a Pittsburgh-based grantmaking foundation.

Our mission is preserving and enhancing human life, and we are working toward this by focusing our grantmaking on four program areas: 

End Death on the Job 

The Foundation's interest in preventing death and serious injury in the workplace stems from the family's company, Industrial Scientific Corporation, which manufactures life-saving gas-monitoring devices. The McElhattan family is deeply committed to ending death on the job by 2050, and we expect the majority of our grant budget will be dedicated to this effort. We are especially interested in innovative safety technology, including virtual and augmented reality.

We do not fund applications from nonprofits for employee training or installing/buying safety equipment; we also do not fund road safety initiatives. If you've found us and are seeking funding for any of these things, we wish you the best of luck-- our team is small and it's necessary for us to stay within our particular areas of focus in this program area.

Education

The McElhattan Foundation believes that learning - about oneself and the world around us - is at the core of human life. After all, we learn throughout our entire lives, and in many different settings from school to home and everything in between. Learning brings joy, frustration, resilience, understanding, and purpose to our lives. Unfortunately, many in our region, specifically children living in poverty and children of color, do not have equitable access to high-quality learning opportunities. There are complex and systemic issues of racial and economic injustice at work. To address these issues, our grantmaking is focused on high-need, high-impact areas. Through careful consideration of evidence and urgency, we make grants to support out-of-school time learning and innovative approaches to expand educator diversity. 

Out-of-school-time (OST) Learning  - Research shows that interest-driven experiences in OST settings are key to unlocking the critical learning and life skills that help children to flourish. Because learning does not stop when the school day ends, we support high-quality afterschool, summer, and other informal learning experiences that take place outside the classroom. We fund hands-on learning experiences where youth can connect to positive adult mentors, feel safe to try new things, and have the opportunity to hone new skills. Through our funding, we work to strengthen and expand OST learning in the Pittsburgh region to ensure equitable access for all children.

We prioritize funding for programs that:

• primarily serve children living in poverty and/or children of color; 
• are community-based, rather than operated by schools; 
• primarily serve children in grades K-8; and 
• operate with dependable consistency and high frequency.

We are particularly interested in funding organizations that demonstrate a commitment to implementing critical quality standards, including:  

• social-emotional learning and skill development;
• positive relationship development among youth and with trusted adult mentors;
• youth-centered approaches that help individuals build on their strengths and talents; and 
• strong partnerships with families and schools.

The McElhattan Foundation aims to provide flexible support to grant recipients in the OST area and will direct the majority of our giving through general operating grants. We also will prioritize organizations with annual operating budgets of $10 million or less.

End-of-Life Planning and Care

The McElhattan Foundation believes it is possible for most people to have a higher quality of life at the end of life. Grants in our End-of-Life Planning and Care program area will support initiatives in three strategic areas: Awareness and Documentation, Caregiver/Provider Training and Support, and Technological Innovation. As always, we seek to fund changemakers—visionary leaders and strong teams who will create dramatic, measurable improvement in how patients and their families experience the inevitable process of dying.

• AWARENESS & DOCUMENTATION - We will support initiatives that educate and empower our community—Western Pennsylvania—about end-of-life decision-making, including clarifying the option of hospice care. We are open to funding broad awareness campaigns as well as targeted efforts aimed at reaching specific segments of the population, especially underserved groups. Once an individual understands their end-of-life options and decides upon their preferences, it’s essential for that person to make their wishes known, in advance and in writing, to their loved ones and medical providers. We will support initiatives designed to make recording and sharing this information easier.
• CAREGIVER/PROVIDER TRAINING & SUPPORT - We support initiatives that offer resources, such as respite care, practical training, and counseling, to family and other nonprofessional caregivers. We support programs that train or retrain professional end-of-life care providers—nurses, doctors, social workers, home healthcare aides, etc.—for careers that pay family-sustaining wages. We are particularly interested in improving communication skills around end-of-life care for providers, and in high-quality home-based care. This work too will be focused in Western Pennsylvania.
• TECHNOLOGICAL INNOVATION - We believe technology can play a role in improving the “quality of death” for many people. Perhaps there is an application for existing technology, like augmented reality, in training caregivers, or perhaps someone can use emerging technology to prevent pressure sores. We would love to see this innovation begin in Pittsburgh, but we are open to applications from end-of-life tech innovators anywhere in the U.S. (To clarify: the bar here is high. We are not funding requests to purchase equipment like VR headsets, iPads, etc. We are looking for game-changing new ideas that could move the entire field of end-of-life care forward.)

Economic Development in Knox & Franklin, PA

The McElhattan family's roots are in Knox and Franklin, PA, and we would like to see those communities thrive. We aim to support locally-led initiatives that improve residents' job opportunities, health, safety, and general quality of life. We have, for example, contributed to the renovation of Miller-Sibley Park and the renovation of the Franklin YMCA, and have funded the Knox Area Ambulance Company and the Knox Volunteer Fire Department.

Organizations that serve Knox and/or Franklin as part of a larger geographical service area are eligible to apply for funding, but in your LOI, please estimate what percentage of funds will be spent specifically on community development in Knox and/or Franklin. 

Our Mission and Values

The McKeen Fund was created as a Charitable Trust by Mrs. Noreen McKeen of Palm Beach, Florida. 

The Fund's Mission is to improve the lives of seniors, people with disabilities and disadvantaged children and families. 

Today, the McKeen Fund continues to support the donor's philanthropic philosophy and values, including an emphasis on giving to Roman Catholic organizations. The Trustees will also consider in addition to the donor's preferences, the demands of a changing world and its impact on the Fund's mission. 

Funding Priorities 

The purpose of the McKeen Fund is to provide support to medical, educational and social service organizations and programs that address the needs of vulnerable children and their families, and seniors. In education, grants focus on pre-k through secondary education, as well as enrichment programs and supportive services. 

Beyond Grants

The Fund also recognizes the donor's value of service and philanthropy going beyond just grantmaking. Fund resources extend to direct charitable activities, including leadership, expertise and a commitment to our grantees and other non-profit organizations. 

Grant applications will be considered where:

• Outside funding (including governmental) is not available;
• The project will be largely funded by the grant unless the grant request covers a discreet component of a larger project; and,
• Funds will be used for capital projects including equipment or endowments; or
• Funds will be used for specific programs that fit within the areas of interest.

Funding Projects

Through the money we are able to raise from our generous and loving donors, we are able to provide financial support to other animal welfare organizations who share the same beliefs and goals as we do but simply do not have the needed funds. When it comes to animals we want to "Help Each Animal Reach Tomorrow".

Funding Focus

Youth Community Programming Support

Youth Community Programming Support helps with assistance to after-school and summer programs, school readiness programs, and enrichment programs for children in need, including mentorship programs. These grants also support educational programming featuring literacy, financial literacy, STEAM programming, and enrichment programs that help children advance in their studies, build knowledge, character, and leadership skills. Participation in these programs will ultimately develop the child as an individual, a future leader, and a successful member of the community.

Insecure Population Basic Need Support

Insecure Population Basic Need Support provides help for children to live healthy, economically stable, and enhanced lives. These funds can be used for programming and services that provide food/nutrition, clothing, dental, health mental wellness assistance. Often these grants are awarded to specially designed services for at risk youth facing poverty, illness, or neglect.

Special Needs Support

Special Needs Support grants are specially designed programs and services that address children’s unique abilities and learning capabilities. Organizations serving children with special needs through education programs, respite services, camp scholarships, technology, medical care and therapy, should apply for funding under this category.

Medical / Health & Well Being Support

Medical / Health & Well Being Support provides grants for hospital programming and specialized equipment needs directly utilized by youth patients. This support also provides assistance in medical research to advance the prevention, diagnosis, and treatment of disease as well as development disorders impacting children. Included in this focus area is funding support of DEI programming to facilitate positive programs and services to assist organizations in building cultures that are a safe space for youth in need of self-awareness support without judgement or conflict.

Through the Joy W. Pope Memorial Grant Funds, the Foundation seeks to foster innovation and model solutions across North Carolina.

We designed the Joy W. Pope Memorial Grant Funds to recognize innovative projects across all spectrums of arts and human service work. However, the grants are not intended for medical research. Your proposed project could be an entirely new creation, something that changes how things are done (ex: improving processes, procedures, equipment, facilities, etc.); an endeavor that expands your scope of work (ex: reaching new populations). Regardless of your proposed project, the result should be a quantifiable gain for the organization and the people it serves.

The Arts Fund

As North Carolina continues to grow and evolve, so have the state’s art traditions. Today, North Carolinians from Murphy to Manteo celebrate, host, and create in venues of all sizes and varieties. Through the Joy W. Pope Memorial Grant in the Arts, we hope to support innovative ideas and highlight the valuable contributions arts make to our communities. 

We will award up to $100,000 for our current application cycle. The process and requirements are the same for both the arts and human services grant funds.

Human Services Fund

Across North Carolina, nonprofits extend a hand up to those in need and, in doing so, directly contribute to the flourishing of self-empowered citizens. Through the Joy W. Pope Memorial Grant in Human Services, we hope to support innovative ideas and highlight the creative projects that are making our communities stronger, better places to live, work, and play.

We will award up to $100,000 for our 2026 application cycle. The requirements are the same for both the arts and human services grant funds. Scroll down to learn more about the grants and start an application. 

Projects we support

Generally, the Mabee Foundation supports organizations or projects in the following areas:

The Mabee Foundation Board of Trustees considers grant requests at its quarterly meetings the second Tuesday in January, April, July and October. Grant requests must be received by the first day of December, March, June and September to be considered at the corresponding Board meeting.

The Mabee Foundation only makes grants for construction projects, renovation projects and for the purchase of major medical equipment.

Grants

Mabee Foundation grants are ‘challenge grants,’ meaning that the organization must raise the remaining funds required to finish the project within one year of the awarding of the grant or risk cancellation of the grant.

The Mabee Foundation will grant up to 20% of the total costs of the project (with a maximum amount of $2,000,000).

Construction must commence within two years after satisfying the grant challenge. Payment is not made on the grant until the challenge has been satisfied and construction has started.

Type of Funding Provided

The Chapman Trusts currently provide funding for general operations, projects and programs, capital needs (brick and mortar, equipment purchases, etc.), and organization capacity building. 

Mission

The Norman Archibald Charitable Foundation is a private foundation created in 1976 by the Will of Norman S. Archibald to be perpetually operated exclusively for the benefit of qualified non-profit charitable organizations serving the needs of Northwest Washington.

Vision

The Foundation is governed by Directors active in the community and having experience in the law, accounting, banking and financial markets. The Directors manage the Foundation’s assets and the cost of operations to achieve superior long term financial results consistent with an acceptable level of risk. The objective is to provide an ongoing source of current grant funding and the maintenance of adequate reserves to cushion the impact on its resources of unforeseen changes in financial markets while maintaining the purchasing power of the Foundation’s assets.

What We Fund

The Archibald Foundation funds non-profit charitable organizations that provide tangible benefits and ongoing support to improve the quality of life for residents of Northwest Washington.

As a means of achieving effective use of the Foundation's funds, a portion of the annual distributions are directed to a Core group of organizations. These Core organizations represent education, museums, hunger relief agencies, the arts and United Way agencies.  Grants are confined to organizations operating within the Northwest Washington region comprising the area from the Cascades to the Pacific Ocean and from Whatcom and San Juan Counties on the north to Grey's Harbor, Thurston and Pierce Counties on the south or to projects significantly affecting residents of Northwest Washington. Our Foundation supports the ArtsFund with annual grants for such organizations. Youth (age 17 and under) performing arts organizations are continuing to be considered for grants by our Foundation.Funding CategoriesThe Foundation annually funds two categories of qualifying charitable organizations that together provide tangible support for urgent needs to improve the quality of life for residents of the region. The categories funded are: 

• A limited group of prequalified somewhat larger recurring CORE grants that are funded annually over an extended period of time. The Foundation has identified these organizations to be deserving of ongoing support. Changes to this group of organizations are infrequent. 
• A larger number of smaller REGULAR grants which in total are affordable to the Foundation while reaching significant numbers of agencies in need with limited available resources. These grants are individually smaller dollar awards (usually less than $10,000) but they fill an important need for meaningful numbers of organizations.

Scope

The Foundation contributions support programs providing community services to youth, the elderly and/or disabled, including medical services and research and to organizations supporting education, the environment, museums and the arts.

The North Carolina GlaxoSmithKline Foundation is committed to embracing the entire state through our various grant programs. We seek the creative spark that makes a true difference in people's lives by supporting innovative programs promoting the sciences, health and education. 

The North Carolina GlaxoSmithKline Foundation is an independent self-funding 501(c)3 nonprofit organization supporting activities that help meet the educational and health needs of today's society and future generations. For decades, the Foundation has been a proud supporter of programs in our state that help advance science, health and education.

The Foundation is governed by a Board of Directors that includes community leaders and GSK corporate executives. The day to day operations are overseen by the staff.

The Foundation was the vision of Glaxo chairman and chief executive, the late Joseph J. Ruvane, Jr. Mr. Ruvane brought the company from Florida to the Research Triangle Park and with it his passion for community. His vision was to establish an annually budgeted corporate giving program and a stable, long-term source of support for our state. In 1996, the company ceased funding the foundation. The foundation's growth is based solely on investment and market growth derived from its own independent endowment.

Since our establishment in 1986, we have awarded $68.9 million in grants over 30 years! We pay approximately $3 million in grants each year to North Carolina nonprofit organizations.

Ribbon of Hope Grants

The North Carolina GlaxoSmithKline Foundation invites nonprofit organizations to apply for one-time grants of $25,000 for projects furthering science, health and education in their local communities. These grants are intended to offer organizations a one-time opportunity to develop a new initiative or to grow and expand and/or enhance an existing program. The Foundation does not fund core mission support, general operating, indirect or overhead costs, construction or renovation projects, medical assistance or services, or equipment.

Many nonprofits are providing outstanding services, but are struggling with limited resources to meet the needs of their local communities as their own budgets are squeezed. These grants are intended to offer organizations a one-time opportunity to expand and/or enhance an existing program or provide seed funds for a new initiative. In addition to the financial assistance, recipients benefit from customized consulting services and technical assistance provided by the North Carolina Center for Nonprofits.

Ribbon of Hope proposals will be considered that relate to the establishment and implementation of new projects or expansion of an existing program which:

• address critical community needs that have been identified through comprehensive needs assessment activities
• tightly align with goals and objectives of local community agencies
• demonstrate their sustainability after grant funds are expended.

The Foundation Office at Fifth Third Bank is committed to creating a greater impact on programs and initiatives that create strong, vibrant communities and provide pathways to opportunity.  Grants for programming in education, the arts, community development, and health and human services in the Greater Cincinnati area are considered, in addition to the specific funding interests originally identified by each of the individual benefactors.

Philip L. Graham Fund Grant

Named for the late Publisher of The Washington Post and President of The Washington Post Company (now Graham Holdings Company), the Philip L. Graham Fund devotes its resources to the betterment of the Washington, D.C., metropolitan area. The Fund awards several million dollars in grants annually to groups providing educational, health, community enrichment, and arts programs and services to communities in and around Washington, D.C.

What We Support

Understanding the broad and changing needs of the communities in and around Washington, D.C., the Philip L. Graham Fund is dedicated to supporting organizations that provide a wide array of direct services to individuals and families. The Fund awards grants across four focus areas and a geographically vast area that includes 10 counties in Virginia and Maryland as well as the District of Columbia.

The Fund is always looking for innovative and efficient organizations to support. Over the past several decades, the Fund has invested tens of millions of dollars in the physical infrastructure, information technology, and transportation needs of local nonprofit organizations. The Fund’s five-member board prefers to fund requests for one-time projects or expenses, but does occasionally award grants for program and general operating expenses.

In 2017, the Philip L. Graham Fund awarded $4.1 million in grants to 138 organizations across Virginia, Maryland and the District of Columbia. Twenty grants went to first-time grantees. Together, grants in the Health & Human Services and Education focus areas represented 84% of the Fund’s giving last year.

In the past, the Fund also worked to foster improvements in the fields of journalism and communications. Health & Human Services

The Health & Human Services segment of the Fund’s portfolio is the largest portion of the Fund’s giving and includes a wide array of services designed to ensure everyone in the greater metropolitan area has access to the tools necessary for healthy and productive living. Nonprofits providing shelter, food, medical care, and workforce development programs to members of our community are a high priority for the Fund as well as efforts to increase access to fresh foods, legal services, routine primary care and dental visits, and comprehensive behavioral health services for children and adults.

Education

The Philip L. Graham Fund is committed to supporting efforts to advance and expand educational offerings for children and adults in the Washington, D.C., metropolitan area. The Fund gives high priority to programs that improve public education and adult literacy.

Arts & Humanities

From its earliest days, the Philip L. Graham Fund has supported both large and small arts organizations in and around Washington, D.C. Many of the city’s largest and most innovative theater companies, museums, dance companies, and arts education programs can trace their earliest funding back to the Graham Fund. The Fund remains committed to supporting longstanding organizations devoted to bringing high-quality and unique programs to the community and to seeking out new organizations bringing fresh ideas and offerings to the metropolitan area. The Fund is specifically interested in arts programming that shows a clear intersection with one of the Fund’s other focus areas.

Community Endeavors

Recognizing the importance of Washington, D.C., to the nation and the world, the Fund considers requests from institutions that tell the stories of our country’s history, values, and accomplishments and strengthen the greater metropolitan community as a whole. This includes support for a broad spectrum of organizations, such as institutions of national significance located in the metropolitan area, improvement of local parks and playgrounds, and efforts to help our community through programs that strengthen families and neighborhoods.

• Funding for land acquisition, preliminary studies or preliminary research is outside of our current funding priorities. We are not currently reviewing requests from organizations with ongoing or pending litigation.

The foundation will consider capital fundraising requests when more than 80% of the funds needed to complete the project have been raised/pledged

The Fast Track Grant Program is for requests $12,499 and under. The Fast Track application process is designed to provide eligible organizations with streamlined access and support for projects or programs. 

How and Why Giving Back to Communities is Important to O’Reilly

From O’Reilly Auto Parts’ inception, O’Reilly co-founder C.H. “Chub” O’Reilly instilled the culture of maintaining high standards for every endeavor, including the area of building civic pride. With Chub’s good example to guide them, all four of his children adopted a business and family philosophy of “giving back” to the community as the Company grew and prospered. Supporting a large number of charitable organizations in all communities in which we operate has long been a focal point for O’Reilly Auto Parts. In order to make an even greater impact, the O’Reilly Automotive Foundation was established in 2020.

Impact

The O’Reilly Automotive Foundation complements O’Reilly Auto Parts’ role as the Friendliest Parts Store in Town. The Foundation serves as an additional conduit to connect with, support, and strengthen the communities in which O’Reilly Auto Parts’ team members and customers live and work. The Foundation continues the philanthropic legacy of the O’Reilly family as dependable community partners, seeking to support critical services in times of need to build stronger communities.

Mission

The O’Reilly Automotive Foundation strives to have a lasting, positive impact in the communities where O’Reilly Auto Parts’ team members and customers live and work by supporting organizations and programs which address issues critical to improving the quality of life for underserved and underrepresented individuals and families. In particular, the Foundation will concentrate its giving in support of organizations and programs addressing economic stability and mobility, workforce development, health and social services, and disaster relief.

Advocating for and endowing programs which provide assistance with issues including hunger, homelessness, and poverty for the economic betterment of the communities in which we operate.

Championing and prioritizing matters of health, including mental and behavioral health, access to basic needs such as medical and dental care for underprivileged communities, and providing funding for organizations focused on childhood development and children’s advocacy as well as care and support for victims of domestic violence.

Disaster Relief

Providing funding and visibility to organizations specializing in providing relief from natural disasters and state of emergency, including providing temporary shelter, food, water, and hygiene or sanitation products to those affected and aiding in cleanup efforts.

Application Requirements

We will consider three principal types of grants:

Project Support Grants support specific projects or programs aligned with our mission. These requests may include some funds earmarked for the overhead costs associated with running a project.

General Operating Support Grants provide limited general operating support for the core operations or organizations whose missions and activities are aligned with our mission. These grants will often help the grantee build organizational, programmatic, and fundraising capacity. Operating support is not intended to help organizations in fiscal crisis. Applicants must have a current strategic or business plan that clearly outlines the organization’s goals and presents a plan for achieving results. Operating support grants must not exceed 15% of an organization’s total agency budget.

Capital Support Grants provide limited support for capital campaigns to fund the acquisition and construction of facilities, existing property renovation, or the purchase of major equipment. The program has a comprehensive approach to funding capital initiatives, which also includes funding for increased program capacity. A feasibility study may be required for capital initiatives to be considered.

Dr. Harry J. Heeb Foundation Grant

Dr. Harry J. Heeb was born in Milwaukee in 1882, and attended the Marquette University Medical School graduating with an M.D. degree in 1904. He did his graduate Medical School work in Vienna, becoming a specialist in eye, ear, nose and throat medicine returning to the US in 1907. Dr Heeb was on the faculty at Marquette Medical School for more than 25 years, he served as a Chief of Staff at St. Joseph Hospital, a President of the Board of Trustees of the old Johnston Emergency Hospital, and was also the first examiner for the blind in the State of Wisconsin. He has been noted as one of the first to use the X-ray in Milwaukee medical practice. He also volunteered his time on several boards and was the member of several charitable organizations.

Assisting children, especially those who are underprivileged or abused.

Providing medical attention directly to persons afflicted with illnesses, diseases, or other disabilities related to eyes, ears, noses, and throats; or carrying on medical research in fields related to such illnesses, diseases, or disabilities.

Providing education and training (and equipment and materials to assist in such education and training) for any of the following: 

• Children, especially those who are underprivileged or abused.
• Those persons who provide education or training or social services for children as referred above.
• Those persons who themselves are afflicted with illnesses, diseases or other disabilities related to eyes, ears, noses and throats.
• Those persons who provide medical services or training to the afflicted persons referred to above. Providing education and training for registered nurses and licensed practical nurses.

Since 1986, The Trust for the Meditation Process has encouraged the practice of inner, silent awareness, whether it's called meditation, mindfulness or contemplative prayer. Our financial grants to non-profit organizations renew contemplative Christianity, promote health and wholeness, and bring silence and stillness to a hectic world.  

Contemplative Christianity Grants

Many people think of meditation as an exclusively Eastern religious practice. But Western religion, too, has a long tradition of silent, non-discursive prayer, often called contemplation, which is rooted in a rich mystical literature. Contemporary thinkers are unearthing this tradition. Their fresh encounter with the Gospels and mystics emphasizes that God is a living presence in us – to be known in silence and love and manifested in our acts of compassion.

• Grants made in the Contemplative Christianity Program have these objectives:  
• Introduce or expand the teaching and practice of Christian contemplative practices, such as Christian Meditation or Centering Prayer.
• Focus on silent, non discursive meditation rather than another aspect or method of prayer or spiritual formation.
• Connect with a Christian audience or have a Christian context.
• Identify and support emerging scholars and leaders in Contemplative Christianity and Christian mysticism.
• Raise the profile of Contemplative Christianity, with language and programs that speak to all Christian denominations and that reconnect people to Christian contemplative traditions.
• Reach underserved populations, such as children, teens, and young adults, people of color, people who are LGBTQ, people with low incomes and people facing addictions, illness, trauma or loss.
• Encourage dialogue among contemplative traditions in all religions.

Mindfulness Grants

Thirty years ago, Jon Kabat-Zinn and his colleagues at the University of Massachusetts medical school adapted classic forms of meditation found in most religions for a modern, secular audience. A simple practice of paying silent attention to the present moment formed the core of their efforts to help people improve physical and emotional health. 

Since then, a large and rigorous body of research has shown that a regular practice of mindfulness meditation can change us in many significant ways: improving immune function, reducing stress, reducing pain and symptoms of chronic disease, improving sleep, improving attention, fostering self- care and compassion, and the list continues to grow. Today, an ever widening interest in the benefits of mindfulness practice has led to its introduction in many fields and professions.  

Grants made in the Mindfulness Program have both of these objectives:

Introduce or expand mindfulness meditation through educational or human service nonprofits or government entities, such as K-12 public schools, colleges and universities, correctional facilities, rehabilitation programs, healthcare, counseling and case management services.

Reach underserved populations, such as children, teens, and young adults, BIPOC and LGBTQ communities, people in the criminal justice system, people with low incomes, and people facing addictions, illness, trauma or loss.

Mindfulness Program grants are highly competitive and we generally receive more applications than we can award. 

Grant Guidelines

Our focus is short-term projects where a small grant can make a credible impact and result in clearly identifiable outcomes. We make 20 to 40 grants annually. Initial awards are typically small – $3,000 to $5,000.

The type of projects we fund includes:

• Meditation courses, workshops, lectures or retreats.
• Trainings, sabbaticals, retreats and other development for meditation teachers.
• Meditation curriculum development.
• Books, supplies and equipment for meditation programs.
• Efforts to expand and build the capacity of meditation programs and address barriers to practice. 
• Meditation research, especially the development of simple, effective, accessible evaluation tools.
• Publications that effectively spread critical perspectives on meditation and meet an important gap in the current literature.
• East/West meditation dialogue.

A literacy legacy

J.L. Turner was functionally illiterate with only a third-grade education. His father died in an accident, and J.L. quit school so he could work on the family farm and help provide for his family. With hard work and determination, J.L. Turner went on to co-found Dollar General.

In 1993, the Dollar General Literacy Foundation was established in his honor. We understand that life can present many obstacles, but we also know it’s never too late to learn! Like J.L., so many others desire to better their lives and the lives of their families and it’s in this spirit that the foundation has flourished.

How we help

Our grant programs are available to qualifying organizations in the 44 states where Dollar General stores are located.

We’ve awarded more than $159 million in grants to literacy organizations that have helped more than 10 million individuals learn to read, prepare for the high school equivalency, or learn English. We believe that everyone deserves an equal opportunity to receive a basic education. It’s never too late to learn

DGLF Youth Literacy Grants

Schools, public libraries, and nonprofit organizations that help students who are below grade level or having trouble reading are eligible to apply. Grant funding is provided to assist in the following areas:

• Implementing new or expanding existing literacy programs
• Purchasing new technology or equipment to support literacy initiatives
• Purchasing books, materials or software for literacy programs

The In-N-Out Burger Foundation’s mission is to assist children and youth who have been victims of child abuse and neglect, and to prevent others from suffering a similar fate. The Foundation will only consider requests from organizations that closely align with our mission and that serve communities where In-N-Out Burger does business.

The In-N-Out Burger Foundation is happy to consider the following types of grants:

Traditional Grants: Grant awards range from $5,000 - $25,000.

Program: Restricted funding to support the development, expansion, or enhancement of programs within an existing organization.

General Operating Support: Unrestricted funding to support the overall operations and sustainability of your nonprofit. Applicants must present a strong case on how this funding will help sustain the organization’s mission and provide benefits to the children in their care. *Please note that all of your organization’s programs must align with our mission to be considered for this type of support.

Capital Grants: Grant awards range from $5,000 - $50,000.

Capital Campaign: Restricted funding for the construction of new facilities, renovations or upgrades to existing buildings, and other special projects that will enhance the organization’s mission.

Capital Purchase: Restricted funding to purchase equipment, furnishings, or any other major material purchases that will enhance the organization’s mission.

Capital grants are awarded on a very limited basis each year. The Foundation will only consider requests from organizations that meet all other funding criteria and who already have an established long-term funding relationship with the Foundation (minimum of 2 years).
