External Collaborative Research (ECR)

The External Collaborative Research (ECR) program is open to all qualified academic and community-based scientists or consortia that are interested in proposing a study and wish to collaborate with Boehringer Ingelheim to develop a protocol and analyze and publish the results.

In addition to providing intellectual contributions, Boehringer Ingelheim may provide drug and/or financial support for an ECR. Boehringer Ingelheim does not serve as the Regulatory Sponsor for an ECR.

The preliminary budget for ECRs should reflect fair market value for all costs and cannot include direct salary support for the Principal Investigator. Budgets for ECRs will be further negotiated pending finalization of the collaborative protocol.

While the research interests listed within the therapeutic areas are of focus to Boehringer Ingelheim, other research interests may be considered.

• Cardio-Renal-Metabolic:
  • Explore the effects of empagliflozin on diseases of the cardio-renal-metabolic systems in patients in under-represented populations
  • Understand the extent of real-world implementation of guideline-based management of patients and/or solutions to overcome barriers of GDMT implementation

Investigator-Initiated Studies (IIS)

In general, IIS are not registrational studies, and they may be proof of concept or exploratory in nature. The budget for these studies should reflect fair market value for all costs, and cannot include direct salary support for the Principal Investigator.

Boehringer Ingelheim may provide financial support and/or drug for an approved IIS. Boehringer Ingelheim does not serve as the regulatory sponsor for IIS. Investigators are required to apply for support via an online application process.

What stage of growth does DRK Foundation typically fund?

Early stage: Organizations who are early stage, which we define as post-pilot and pre-scale. This typically means: 

• Your program, product or service is already being used in the market or in the field, 
• You have early indication that your model is having its intended impact on the beneficiary populations,
• Your organization is relatively young (ideally between two and five years old, although we will consider both younger and older organizations).

Venture funding: In the case of for profits, we typically support Seed to Series A organizations, and never lead rounds; we also generally but not exclusively refrain from participating in financings exceeding a $15M USD post-money valuation.

The Lawrence Foundation is a private family foundation focused on making grants to support environmental, human services and other causes.

The Lawrence Foundation was established in mid-2000. We make both program and operating grants and do not have any geographical restrictions on our grants. Nonprofit organizations that qualify for public charity status under section 501(c)(3) of the Internal Revenue Code or other similar organizations are eligible for grants from The Lawrence Foundation.  

Grant Amount and Types

Grants typically range between $5,000 - $10,000. In some limited cases we may make larger grants, but that is typically after we have gotten to know your organization over a period of time. We also generally don’t make multi-year grants, although we may fund the same organization on a year by year basis over a period of years.

General operating or program/project grant requests within our areas of interests are accepted. In general, regardless of whether a grant request is for general operating or program/project expenses, all of our grants will be issued as unrestricted grants.

American Foundation for Suicide Prevention (AFSP) Established in 1987, the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention (AFSP) is a voluntary health organization that gives those affected by suicide a nationwide community empowered by research, education and advocacy to take action against this leading cause of death.  AFSP is dedicated to saving lives and bringing hope to those affected by suicide. AFSP creates a culture that’s smart about mental health by engaging in the following core strategies:

• Funding scientific research
• Educating the public about mental health and suicide prevention
• Advocating for public policies in mental health and suicide prevention
• Supporting survivors of suicide loss and those affected by suicide in our mission

AFSP Suicide Research Priority Areas  

We define priorities for funding every two years to stimulate research in understudied areas. We also encourage applications that address the priorities set out by the National Action Alliance for Suicide Prevention’s Research Prioritization Task Force. Priority area research applications are reviewed along with the general pool of grant applications, with priority given to strong grants in the designated areas.

• AFSP suicide research grants program priority areas:
  • Diversity: Suicide prevention research related to underrepresented communities, health and mental health disparities and inequities, as well as researchers from underrepresented backgrounds proposing research focused on understanding and preventing suicide.
  • Evaluation of technological tools for suicide prevention: The application of implementation science methodology to evaluate technological tools available in order to expand access and overcome barriers for suicide prevention.
  • Survivors of Suicide Loss: Research related to survivors of suicide loss, understanding the impact of suicide loss and it’s after-effects, and the process of healing.

Standard Research Innovation Grants

Grants awarded to individual investigators at any level.

Purpose

All AFSP research grants are designed to support research on suicide from a variety of disciplines including psychiatry, medicine, psychology, genetics, epidemiology, neurobiology, sociology, nursing, health services administration, social work, and many others. Grants are not intended to support the development or implementation of organization-specific prevention programs, educational programs, treatments, or other interventions unless they have a significant research component. In that case a study would be welcome, but it must have generalizability beyond the specific institution or program.

Standard Research Innovation Grants are made for a period of two years, with the second year of funding contingent upon the first year's performance. The project must begin within 6 months of the approved start date.

Awards for Advancing Minority Mental Health

The Awards for Advancing Minority Mental Health were established in 2003 by the American Psychiatric Association Foundation (APAF) to recognize community organizations that have undertaken innovative and supportive efforts to:

• Raise awareness in underserved minority communities about mental illness including the need for early recognition, access to and the availability of treatment, and the cultural barriers to treatment.
• Increase access to quality mental health services for underserved minorities.
• Improve the quality of care for underserved minorities, particularly those in the public health system or with severe mental illness.
• Have been operational for at least two (2) years.

The AACAP Pilot Research Award, supported by Industry Supporters offers $15,000 for general psychiatry residents who have an interest in beginning a career in child and adolescent psychiatry research. By providing up to two awards to general psychiatry residents for pilot research programs, we support these young investigators at a critical stage, encouraging future careers in child and adolescent psychiatry research. Recipients have the opportunity to submit a poster presentation on their research for AACAP’s Annual Meeting. The award also includes travel support to attend the AACAP Annual Meeting for up to five days.

The AACAP Pilot Research Award for Attention Disorders, supported by the Elaine Schlosser Lewis Fund, offers $15,000 to child and adolescent psychiatry fellows and early career faculty who have an interest in beginning a career in child and adolescent psychiatry research. Fellowships are for up to a three-year term. The fellowship amount is up to £130,000 / US$169,000 per year.

The fellowship is intended to support (or contribute) to the fellow’s salary (including on-costs fringe) and to provide research costs for them to develop their own research project.

Community Partnership Award

The Mutual of America Foundation Community Partnership Award recognizes outstanding nonprofit organizations in the United States that have shown exemplary leadership by facilitating partnerships with public, private or social sector leaders who are working together as equal partners, not as donors and recipients, to build a cohesive community that serves as a model for collaborating with others for the greater good.

Distinguished Investigator Grant
