We raise awareness about the overwhelming challenges some veterans, service members, and their families face, and we invest in solutions to help support them.

Grant Criteria

We provide funding for programs that serve the military and veteran community. We focus on programs that improve the health and well-being of service members, veterans, their families, and caregivers, and that:

The Brutten Family Foundation funds groups and organizations that help expand access to the outdoors, high-quality education, and vital mental health services. We believe that our wellbeing exists at the intersection of these core pillars.

The Brutten Family Foundation, founded by Patricia and Marc Brutten in 1996, is a private U.S. foundation with a nearly 25-year record of philanthropy focused on benefiting San Diego County and global charities. 

Through our family business, Brutten Global, we have spent more than 40 years in the commercial real estate industry, working in the United States and Europe. Brutten Global emerged and flourished in San Diego, and we began the foundation to give back to local organizations and schools. Our work has expanded to nurture both local and global efforts. Now, our children are also involved in giving back to our communities, and as a family, we share a sense of responsibility to positively change people’s outcomes and give individuals the tools they need to create their own impact.

Environment

Protecting our environment is the most critical issue we face as a human race, and investing in a sustainable planet is paramount to our future. We focus on efforts to revive ecosystems and expand access to the outdoors for all, especially underserved communities and those who face systemic barriers to spending time in nature.

Education

Through access to education and resources, underserved students have the chance to overcome obstacles and realize their goals. We support programs and institutions that equip and offer young people the resources, support, and financial aid necessary to succeed in and outside of classrooms.

Menatl Health

Millions of people worldwide suffer from mental health conditions, but many go untreated, partially due to stigmas, a lack of access to treatment, or a lack of awareness of solutions. We support projects relating to mental health resources and care to help individuals access what they need and build stronger, safer societies.

Centene Charitable Foundation

Successful corporate citizenship happens when companies invest in the local organizations that know their communities best. The Centene Foundation works with our local partners on initiatives that focus on inclusion, the whole person and community development.

Global Fund for Children raises all the funds that we use to invest in community-based organizations around the world. We know that organizations spend precious time preparing proposals for prospective funders. We appreciate there are many worthy causes and changemakers that we will not be able to support. As such, we do not ask organizations to submit proposals. We visit organizations in person and build relationships, getting to know possible new partners when we have raised funds. As a first step, we maintain a database of organizations we can get to know if we have just the right opportunity.

Our work advances the rights of children and youth across four focus areas and five regions. We have a deep commitment to courageous organizations that support young people facing poverty, injustice, and discrimination.

We support grassroots organizations that are not afraid to tackle the root causes of poverty with innovative, local solutions. Most offer holistic care to comprehensively address the needs of each child. Many become regional and national leaders in children’s rights—raising awareness, influencing policy, and ultimately impacting thousands of children and youth beyond their doors.

Education

Every child deserves the chance to learn, grow, and dream. We work closely with our partners to make sure children across the world can learn, play, and go to school. We are committed to helping every child reach their potential through equal access to quality education.

Gender justice

GFC and our partners promote gender equity, advance girls’ education, inspire healthy masculinities, support the rights of LGBTQ+ youth, and ensure that young people live free from gender-based violence and exploitation.

Safety and wellbeing

We are committed to ending violence and exploitation of children, to helping young survivors rebuild their lives, and to protecting the mental health and wellbeing of every child and young person.

Climate resilience

Young people are mobilizing to address climate change. They are building resilience in their communities, educating their families and communities, advocating for policy changes, and stewarding the environment. We work with young leaders and youth-led organizations finding real solutions for both people and the planet.

Youth power

Young people are achieving incredible things - creating change in the present and shaping the future. We help young people become leaders and changemakers, making sure they have the opportunities, skills, and confidence to tackle the issues central to their lives and their communities.

Solidarity in emergencies

In times of crisis, we are committed to supporting our partners around the world as they respond in their communities. From natural disasters to conflict or health emergencies, our local partners are well-positioned to address emerging challenges. GFC provides emergency grants, technical support, and wellbeing solidarity to our partners as they navigate emergencies impacting their organizations and their communities.

Impact and Learning

Global Fund for Children funds community-based organizations and works closely with them to strengthen their capacity to create change. Our primary impact is on the organizations we support, and by extension, the impact they create with and for children and young people, in their communities.

Every organization has its unique aspirations and approaches, so our work with each organization is unique, tailored, and made possible by trust and understanding of their unique contexts.

We capture global quantitative indicators to capture how organizations change over time, but qualitative stories of change are critical to understanding the impact of GFC’s work. Our impact and learning approach is rooted in feedback, participatory learning reviews, and a commitment to capture only the information GFC and our partners will actually use to deepen our learning and to become more effective in our closely collaborative work.

Mission

The mission of the Hearst Foundations is to identify and fund outstanding nonprofits to ensure that people of all backgrounds in the United States can build healthy, productive and satisfying lives. Through its grantmaking, the Hearst Foundations support well-established nonprofit organizations that address significant issues within their major areas of focus—culture, education, health and social service—and that primarily serve large demographic and/or geographic constituencies. In each area of funding, the Foundations seek to identify those organizations achieving truly differentiated results relative to other organizations making similar efforts for similar populations. The Foundations also look for evidence of sustainability beyond their support.

Whether providing a scholarship to a deserving student, supporting a rural health clinic or bringing artists into schools so children can see firsthand the beauty of the arts, the Foundations’ focus is consistent: to help those in need, those underserved and those underrepresented in society. Since the Foundations were formed in the 1940s, the scale and capabilities of the grant making have changed, but the mission has not.

Health Grant

The Hearst Foundations assist leading regional hospitals, medical centers and specialized medical institutions providing access to healthcare for high-need populations. In response to the shortage of healthcare professionals necessary to meet the country’s evolving healthcare demands, the Foundations also fund programs designed to enhance skills and increase the number of practitioners and educators across roles in healthcare. The Foundations also support public health, medical research and the development of young investigators to help create a broad and enduring impact on the nation’s health.

Funding Priorities in Health

In the recent past, 30% of total funding has been allocated to Health. Organizations with budgets over $10 million have received 80% of the funding in Health.

The Hearst Foundations are only able to fund approximately 25% of all grant requests, of which about 80% is directed to prior grantees and about 20% is targeted for new grantees.

The Labcorp Charitable Foundation

We believe every person deserves equitable care and education.

In 2020 Labcorp established a private charitable 501(c)(3) foundation to advance our desire to bring quality healthcare access to all by supporting education and our local communities.

  • More than 775 million people over the age of 15 are illiterate. Our goal is to strengthen the capacity of communities to support basic education and literacy, reduce gender disparity in education, and increase adult literacy. Learn more >

How they’re funded

Global grants have a minimum budget of $30,000 and a maximum World Fund award of $400,000. Grant sponsors can use a combination of District Designated Funds (DDF), cash, and/or directed gift and endowed fund program award spendable amounts to fund a global grant. The Foundation will provide an 80 percent World Fund match for all DDF contributions. There is no minimum World Fund match.

The Foundation's primary commitment is to improving the overall quality of life for economically and/or educationally disadvantaged individuals and families who manifest a genuine desire to help themselves. The Foundation also supports efforts designed to strengthen communities. Priority is given to those charitable organizations and institutions with an established record of increasing economic and educational opportunities in both low-income, inner-city neighborhoods, as well as in rural areas.

The Foundation provides support in a variety of areas, including: low-income housing, affordable day care, after-school programs, drug rehabilitation clinics, juvenile intervention (pre-incarceration) counseling, job-training, micro-loans to small, family owned businesses in Central and South America, and Africa, rural land/open space preservation, and college scholarship support to exceptional public high school students.

Funding Guidelines

The Foundation's most important guiding principle is that it seeks to engage in philanthropic activities and to fund charitable organizations and institutions that have demonstrated they are self-sustaining, or clearly have the potential to become self-sustaining, or that focus on self-sustaining operations and activities.

Accordingly, the Foundation's primary focus is dedicated to strengthening the economic base of low income, disadvantaged communities, primarily within the U.S., but also in developing countries. The Foundation has a keen interest in supporting charitable organizations and institutions that have developed clear and effective economic development programs. To this end, the Foundation provides financial support, usually in the form of low interest rate loans known as Program Related Investments ("PRI's"), to a variety of 501c3 tax exempt charitable organizations and institutions.

In addition to its PRI program funding, the Foundation also makes charitable grants in the areas of education, health and housing. The Foundation has made grants (in the form of merit-based college scholarships) to low-income San Francisco Bay Area students, as well as to performance arts programs providing economical access to lower income individuals and families. Social Impact Fund

What We Fund

The Social Impact Funds support community-led transformation by strategically deploying capital to social entrepreneurs who are using their lived experience to tackle three vital social drivers of health.

• Health Care Access & Quality - Overcoming barriers to high-quality, affordable, accessible health care that is age, gender and culturally appropriate.
• Food Security - Increasing access to healthy, affordable food via sustainable farming, mobile markets, food hubs, food as medicine and more.
• Economic Empowerment - Promoting economic health through job creation, skill upleveling, banking access, financial literacy, violence prevention, housing support and more.

We’re looking for organizations that are translating evidence-based science research and clinical know-how into solutions that address health care access and quality, food security, economic empowerment or a combination of these three social drivers of health.

The Social Impact Funds support both for-profit and nonprofit organizations that have less than $10M in revenue and can provide evidence their program is making an impact.

Nationwide Grant

We are looking to fund sustainable and scalable solutions to the underlying social and environmental determinants of health challenges – access to healthcare, food security, and economic empowerment.

Incorporating healthy foods into diets can help reduce the risk of heart disease, stroke, diabetes and certain types of cancer. In addition, a healthy diet can improve mental health, boost energy levels and promote healthy aging.

To solve many of the most pressing challenges facing the world, like climate change and population health, we need diverse perspectives in science and technology. By investing in STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics) education, we can prepare the next generation of innovators and problem-solvers to drive progress and shape the future. We support programs in the areas of K-8 math, high school STEM enrichment and college success.

Building a strong foundation in STEM subjects is critical for students who aspire to pursue careers in science. STEM education provides students with the necessary skills and knowledge to solve complex problems, think critically, and innovate. By developing a strong understanding of STEM fundamentals, students can pursue careers of tremendous impact.

STEM education can also help students develop important life skills such as teamwork, communication, and adaptability, which are essential for success in any career. By investing in STEM education, we can prepare the next generation of innovators and problem-solvers who will drive progress and shape the future. Helping Victims Of Domestic Violence And Sexual Assault

Build Awareness, Offer Solutions, And Address Needs

The Robin McGraw and Dr. Phil Foundation is devoted to helping advance organizations and programs that serve victims of domestic violence, sexual assault, child abuse and individuals facing crisis to live healthy, safe and joy-filled lives. We also support communities that have been severely affected by disasters.

Dr. Phil McGraw, the most well-known mental health professional in the world launched his award-winning daytime talk show in 2002. Dr. Phil has used his platform to make psychology accessible and understandable to the general public by addressing important personal and social issues. In 2003, Dr. Phil established the Dr. Phil Foundation funding many worthy organizations benefitting disadvantaged families and children.

Emphasis is given to programs that help domestic violence, sexual assault, and sexual traffic victims live healthy, safe and joy-filled lives by providing shelter, support, education, counseling and healing. Preference is given to prevention of domestic violence, the expansion of services and improvements to infrastructure or buildings that positively impact survivors.

Children and Foster Care

Emphasis is given to organizations that seek to provide a strong foundation for the social, emotional, educational and spiritual well-being of children, providing them with access to critically needed services, including safe and loving homes, hunger relief, medical and mental health services, education and job training.

Additionally, we support the importance of family reunification and adoption. Priority is given to organizations affecting change in the foster care system to improve outcomes and create positive experiences for children.

Disaster Relief

In the event of national and international crises, resources will be made available for restricted donations to be received. Support may not be solicited.

Overall Program Goal & Approach 

The Stranahan Foundation’s Early Childhood Education grant program aims to improve access to high-quality early care and education for young children, particularly those from low-income families. We do this by investing in the development and retention of a high-quality, thriving early educator workforce.

Context

The spring 2026 funding cycle will support nonprofit organizations and projects that align with our Innovation and Proven Professional Development (PD) strategies. These strategies specifically fund professional development organizations, early childhood networks, institutions of higher education, and local and state early childhood departments that are designing and/or implementing larger-scale models (at 5+ early childhood programs). FUNDING OPPORTUNITY

This cycle has up to $1.5 million in funding available to support innovation and proven professional development proposals. We are exclusively interested in projects that address the highest needs identified in our recent engagement with partners and the gaps in our learning portfolios. Our 2026 priorities include:

• Affordable and scalable instructional coaching models. Research indicates that one of the most effective ways to improve educational quality is through ongoing, personalized, and collaborative coaching for educators. However, the quality and efficacy of coaching can vary significantly, and intensive coaching can be both costly and time-consuming. Therefore, we aim to support initiatives that test or expand more affordable and scalable options for high-quality, individualized coaching in ECE classrooms.
• Leadership development and retention models. Strong, qualified ECE leaders are crucial for retaining high-quality educators, delivering exceptional care, engaging families, and operating effective organizations. Currently, access to leadership development programs is limited or inconsistent. This cycle, we aim to support models for two key groups:
  • Elementary School Principals: With the growth of publicly funded pre-kindergarten programs, elementary school principals are taking on more responsibility for supporting early childhood educators. Research shows many feel unprepared to take on this role and face challenges in integrating these educators into K-3+ systems. Stranahan is interested in leadership support and development models that address this gap.
  • Leaders from under-resourced communities: With increasing funding challenges and rising educator burnout, Stranahan wants to support models that help site-level directors and program leaders from underserved communities navigate these challenges and promote high-quality learning environments. This includes models that include:           
    • Content in three or more key areas, including pedagogy and instruction, administration and operations, personal development, team and interpersonal skills, and policy and community engagement.
    • Formal and informal learning opportunities that are practical and at least six months (preferably more).
• Network or community-wide substitute or floater teacher pools. Due to workforce shortages and teacher burnout, the Foundation has recently invested in supporting high-quality substitute and floater teacher pools within specific providers or programs. However, we are eager to explore how this could be implemented on a larger scale through a community or network-based approach. Successful applicants must demonstrate that substitutes and floaters are or will be trained in high-quality teaching practices beyond basic health and safety and must connect the design of their models to teaching and learning goals.
• Reinvestment funding for recent Stranahan grantees. Stranahan has allocated a portion of the funding in this cycle to support recent grantees (2020 or later) who have received funding to pilot innovative professional development models or adapt proven ones. We are especially interested in proposals that aim to:
  • Refine or expand existing models based on insights gained from earlier funded work.
  • Strengthen the evidence base through more rigorous evaluation.

BUDGET & AWARDS

Applicants may request funding of up to $500,000 (total) over three years. Key things to note:

• To qualify for the highest level of funding, your proposal must include multiple collaborators and engagement with local or state departments using a system-based approach focused on one of our priorities.
• The Foundation plans to award up to five grants in this funding cycle. Each grant will average about $300,000.

Awards for Advancing Minority Mental Health

The Awards for Advancing Minority Mental Health were established in 2003 by the American Psychiatric Association Foundation (APAF) to recognize community organizations that have undertaken innovative and supportive efforts to:

• Raise awareness in underserved minority communities about mental illness including the need for early recognition, access to and the availability of treatment, and the cultural barriers to treatment.
• Increase access to quality mental health services for underserved minorities.
• Improve the quality of care for underserved minorities, particularly those in the public health system or with severe mental illness.
• Have been operational for at least two (2) years.

Kentucky Fried Wishes

Non-profit organizations can apply for a $10,000 grant to fund an actionable project on their wish list.

The KFC Foundation will award a total of $1 million to 100 non-profit organizations to make their Kentucky Fried Wishes come true.

Twenty-five grants will be awarded per quarterly cycle.

NextWorldNow (NWN) holds that world communities can work together in an informed and personal way, leveraging technology and resources, to improve the well-being of participants in each community. 

Our Aim

We invest in and support community development projects requiring modest capital. We fund projects that are owned by the local community, whose social impact and return on investment can be measured, and whose success can be sustained. In the spirit of innovation, we aim for a diverse "portfolio" of projects and geographies to spread creative solutions. 

We work to discover and apply best practice social investment models on a small scale personal level. Our process invites ongoing direct connection with the sponsored community rather than an anonymous one-time donation. We believe it is possible to invest in projects that increase the wellbeing of communities while avoiding unintended harm. We operate with minimal overhead and a goal of funneling nearly 100% of grant resources to the intended community project.   

NextWorldNow Community Investments (NWN) works with individuals, communities, and other organizations to make this happen. We invite communities with project ideas to submit their requests for funding. We study the requests and make funding decisions. We welcome scale-able partnerships with other organizations on joint projects. We invest in solutions built to last, looking beyond short term fixes to address long standing problems. We continue to refine our process as we learn more about what works and what does not. NWN is a non profit private foundation with United States 501 (c) (3) status.

Early Learner STEM Education Grant

The Akamai Foundation is pleased to launch the 2025 Early Learner STEM Education grant program. In addition to our core focus on STEM learning, we aim to help global education programs navigate the pandemic's economic impact and address digital inclusion gaps for young learners (pre-college students ages 5-19).

All applicants are required to provide a comprehensive plan outlining their STEM education program goals. This should include a digital inclusion strategy to address and eliminate barriers to access and use of technology in learning, especially for the most disadvantaged. Digital inclusion strategy examples include but are not limited to:

How and Why Giving Back to Communities is Important to O’Reilly

Application Requirements

We will consider three principal types of grants:

Project Support Grants support specific projects or programs aligned with our mission. These requests may include some funds earmarked for the overhead costs associated with running a project.

General Operating Support Grants provide limited general operating support for the core operations or organizations whose missions and activities are aligned with our mission. These grants will often help the grantee build organizational, programmatic, and fundraising capacity. Operating support is not intended to help organizations in fiscal crisis. Applicants must have a current strategic or business plan that clearly outlines the organization’s goals and presents a plan for achieving results. Operating support grants must not exceed 15% of an organization’s total agency budget.

Capital Support Grants provide limited support for capital campaigns to fund the acquisition and construction of facilities, existing property renovation, or the purchase of major equipment. The program has a comprehensive approach to funding capital initiatives, which also includes funding for increased program capacity. A feasibility study may be required for capital initiatives to be considered.

The Gladys Brooks Foundation was created under the will of Gladys Brooks Thayer of New York. 

Its purpose is to provide for the intellectual, moral and physical welfare of the people of this country by establishing and  supporting non-profit libraries, educational institutions, hospitals and clinics.

Scope of Grants Considered

The Foundation will consider major grant applications for innovative projects in the fields of libraries, education, hospitals and clinics.

Grants for Libraries 

Grant applications will be considered generally for resource Endowments (print, film, electronic database, speakers/workshops) capital construction and innovative equipment. Projects fostering broader public access to global information sources utilizing collaborative efforts, pioneering technologies and equipment are encouraged.

Grants for Educational Institutions

Grant applications from universities, colleges and secondary schools will be considered generally for:

• educational endowments to fund scholarships based solely on educational achievements, leadership and academic ability of the student; 
• endowments to support fellowships and teaching chairs for educators who confine their activities primarily to classroom instruction in the liberal arts, mathematics and the sciences during the academic year;
• erection or endowment of buildings, wings or additions thereto of buildings, and equipment for educational purposes;
• capital equipment for educational purposes.

Grants for Hospitals & Clinics

Grant proposals from hospitals and clinics where the proposal addresses a new health need, an improvement in the quality of health care or reduced health costs with better patient outcomes will be considered generally for:

• endowments for programs;
• erection or endowment of buildings, wings of or additions to buildings;
• capital equipment.

Community Solutions Challenge 

The Community Solutions Challenge (CSC), launched in 2021, works to advance health equity through the support of community-based nonprofit programming that prioritize the social, cultural, and linguistic needs of historically excluded and disenfranchised populations. To date, CSC has provided more than $2.6 million to over 100 local nonprofit programs working to address health inequities and advance opportunities in STEM among underserved communities.

Program Focus: Community-based programs must cover one of the following areas:

Nutrition

Address nutrition as a social determinant of health, including reducing food insecurity and providing comprehensive nutritional education to improve health outcomes.

Healthcare Access

Improve access to quality healthcare by addressing barriers, including health education, access to preventive screenings, and transportation services.

Lung Health

Improve lung health and achieve improved health outcomes for those impacted by asthma, COPD and lung cancer

Children’s Mental Health Innovation Awards

Our program aims to seed fund transformative mental healthcare solutions for children across the U.S. It helps address the lack of investment in youth mental health, connect innovative ideas with capital, and build capacity for nonprofits.  

About the Program 

This initiative invites U.S.-based 501(c)(3) public charities with an annual total revenue under $5 million to submit innovative ideas for advancing children’s mental health.There are two award categories: the Innovation Awards ($100,000 each) which are open to all, and the Next Gen Innovation Awards ($25,000 - $50,000 each) which are open to nonprofits founded and/or led by leaders under 32 years old, with more than two years in operation.Up to $550,000 in grants are provided and select applicants are invited to join the Leadership Learning Series.
