Best Operating Grants for Nonprofits

The Jacob Hirsch Fellowship, offered by the American School of Classical Studies at Athens, supports U.S. or Israeli Ph.D. candidates and early-career scholars in archaeology. It provides a stipend of $11,500, room, and board, with meals included. Fellows must engage full-time in research from September to May, contributing to the academic life of the School. This fellowship fosters the investigation and preservation of Greece's cultural heritage.

The Apple Grant Program, offered by the Troy Foundation, provides up to $1,000 to teachers in the Troy City School District and associated schools. It aims to enhance educational experiences through projects, equipment, or field trips. Eligible applicants must demonstrate the number of Troy resident students and have their applications signed by the Superintendent and Building Principal. This initiative supports educators in creating impactful learning opportunities for their students.

Coral Gables Community Foundation

The Luke Sturgill Memorial Scholarship

The Luke Sturgill Memorial Scholarship is awarded to high school seniors who will attend a vocational or technical school. Students must pursue a degree or certificate from a vocational or technical institution.

The Luke Sturgill Memorial Scholarship Fund was established by Luke’s aunt and Coral Gables resident, Laura Russo, in his memory to support educational opportunities for deserving high school graduates.

Through the generosity of our donors, we have more than $2 million in scholarships available in 2025 to students from more than 60 high schools. We offer scholarships to high school seniors, college and nontraditional students, and K-12 art and music camps and lessons.

The Academy Martial Arts Leadership has been serving families in the Fox Cities since 1995. As the founders/owners, Jeff & Amanda Denu have been passionate about making our community stronger one Black Belt at a time teaching martial arts, while reinforcing respect, self-discipline, integrity, and excellence. Aaron W. Howard Scholarship Fund

The Aaron W. Howard Scholarship Fund was established by the parents, family and friends of Aaron Howard. Pfc. Howard died in February 1991 while serving in the U.S. Army in the Persian Gulf War. He was a 1989 Lakeview High School graduate. There are no restrictions as to college to be attended or curriculum to be followed. To qualify, an applicant must be in need of financial assistance and must have demonstrated potential to succeed in the college curriculum to be pursued. Factors considered, in addition to financial need are character and citizenship, industry and effort and ability as indicated by test data and grades received to date in high school.

Currently, The Community Foundation administers 75 separate endowed scholarship funds. Established by individuals or organizations, these funds help area students achieve their academic and career-oriented goals.

Scholarships through the Community Foundation support individuals of all ages who reside within the Dan River Region – Danville, VA; Pittsylvania and Halifax counties, VA; and Caswell County, NC. In 2025, we awarded more than $370,000 to 152 students.

Danville Lions Foundation Scholarship

Open applications for Danville, Pittsylvania, and Caswell County High School graduates who are pursuing a health-related profession, with a preference for those in a graduate level of study, especially those concentrating in sight and speech/hearing professions.

The Martinson Global Grants provide funding for students admitted to the John Martinson Honors Program at Northeastern University. These grants support participation in approved global experiences, including study abroad and alternative spring break programs. Internal admits can apply for funding to cover various expenses such as program fees, airfare, and housing. It's essential to submit the MGG Request Form and apply before the term's deadline. Note that tuition and personal travel costs are not covered.

The William W. and Beverly I. Sutton Scholarship, provided by the Community Foundation for Muskegon County, aims to empower Muskegon County residents to achieve their educational dreams. This scholarship is available to high school seniors, current college students, and adult learners. With over $1 million in scholarships awarded annually, it reflects the Foundation's commitment to fostering educational opportunities and community growth, ensuring that the legacy of Bill and Beverly Sutton continues to inspire future generations.

The Genetics Society offers the Junior Scientist Conference Grant Award (Scheme A) to support junior scientist members in attending genetics conferences. Grants of up to £200 cover travel and accommodation costs for eligible undergraduate, Master’s, PhD students, and postdoctoral scientists. Applicants must present a poster or talk at the conference. The society, founded in 1919, plays a vital role in advancing genetic research and education, benefiting over 2,000 members in the UK.

At the Community Foundation for Muskegon County, we work with donors, grantees, and advisors to address key community issues.

Margaret A. Wright Scholarship

This scholarship has been made possible by the generosity of Margaret Wright, who established the Margaret A. Wright Scholarship of the Community Foundation for Muskegon County. Margaret worked as a secretary for the Norge Corporation, the County of Muskegon and Muskegon Construction. She enjoyed sewing, ice skating and exercising at the Y. When she passed, she left a gift through her estate to create a scholarship fund that will support will support Muskegon County graduates that are pursuing a specific trade or skill.

The Listos California Regional Grant (LM) Program aims to enhance disaster preparedness in California's Coastal Region. This initiative supports nonprofit organizations with 501(c)(3) status that serve diverse populations across multiple counties, particularly those at higher risk of disasters. By offering resources and training, the program seeks to empower communities disproportionately affected by emergencies, fostering resilience and recovery efforts. Eligible applicants can independently implement projects or collaborate with local nonprofits to maximize impact.

The Listos California Regional Grant (LL) Program aims to enhance disaster preparedness in California's Southern Region by supporting nonprofits that serve multiple counties with equity priority factors. This program enables organizations to collaborate and provide essential disaster training and resources to underserved communities disproportionately affected by emergencies, ultimately improving their response, recovery, and mitigation capabilities.

The Carolyn Nordstrom Scholarship was established to honor a Battle Creek native who found her calling in the field of Marketing. After graduating from Battle Creek Central, Carolyn Nordstrom earned a degree in Communications at Michigan State University. Even with all her success in the business world, Nordstrom arguably became best know as the quiet, behind-the-scenes promoter of a better Battle Creek.

This fund has been established to provide scholarships for CACC students to further their careers by taking post-secondary classes and to assist CACC in developing programs which will meet students' needs for education in technological fields. Whenever possible, funding will be prioritized for, but not limited to, programs and students in the Agriscience and Natural Resources fields.

Bronson Class of 1981 Memorial Scholarship

The Bronson Class of 1981 Scholarship Fund was established for the purpose of providing scholarship to Brinson area students who seek educational opportunities beyond high school.

The MAC Underserved Initiative Grant Program aims to enhance access to quality arts programming across all 82 counties in Mississippi. By identifying underserved areas that lack recent grants or services, the Mississippi Arts Commission facilitates outreach and support for local arts initiatives. This program not only promotes cultural engagement but also fosters community development and collaboration among various organizations, ensuring that all citizens can participate in diverse artistic experiences.

Blanche Barr Trone Scholarship Fund

Blanche Barr Trone (1892 – 1985) by her Last Will and Testament established a Trust for scholarships for needy students attending college or institutions for advanced training. Mrs. Trone operated a pharmacy in Battle Creek for many years and was vitally interested in helping young people further their education.

The Barton Farm Company Scholarship was established in 2007 by the Barton family. This scholarship was established in appreciation for the support of the Homer community. The Barton family feels very fortunate that they have been able to employ talented students from the Homer area. The Barton's believe strongly in the importance of education and the continued excellence of our local schools.

First Responder-Hero Education Scholarship

Open applications for Danville, Pittsylvania, and Caswell County graduates whose parents are armed forces members or veterans, law enforcement officers, or fulltime or volunteer firefighters, with a preference for graduates whose parents were killed or wounded while performing their duties.

Gibson County Community Foundation

Established in 1993, the Gibson County Community Foundation is one of over 800 community foundations in the United States today. The Community Foundation is a charitable resource devoted to our local community. We help people make meaningful gifts that improve life in Gibson County, Indiana today and for generations to come.

We are part of the Community Foundation Alliance (The Alliance), a network of nine community foundations serving counties in southwestern Indiana. The Alliance, a 501(c)(3) charitable organization, provides management and administrative expertise to county-wide community foundations, empowering each to promote philanthropy, build endowments, and improve well-being in our local community. 

Raymond and Gretchen Ceney Memorial Scholarship

Annual scholarship established in memory of Raymond and Gretchen to help students pursue advanced education.

The Colorado Dental Association Foundation Grant aims to enhance community oral health through funding projects that address documented needs for underserved populations. The CDA prioritizes proposals demonstrating a proven track record of effective service delivery and ensuring sustainable outcomes beyond the grant term. Eligible applicants include charitable nonprofits, government agencies, and dental clinics focused on underserved communities. This initiative seeks to create lasting improvements in access to dental care across Colorado.

At the Community Foundation for Muskegon County, we work with donors, grantees, and advisors to address key community issues.

Muskegon County Michigan State University Alumni Association Scholarship

This scholarship has been made possible by the generosity of the Muskegon County MUS Alumni Association, which established the Muskegon County MUS Alumni Association Scholarship of the Muskegon County Community Foundation. This scholarship encourages Muskegon-area students who have graduated from Muskegon Community College to transfer to Michigan State University.

The Community Wellbeing Grant, offered by the Lululemon Centre for Social Impact, aims to enhance wellbeing through movement, mindfulness, and connection. This grant supports community-led non-profits working to address systemic inequities, helping to build access to wellness resources. Applications are encouraged from organizations that prioritize diverse leadership and serve populations facing barriers to wellbeing. The goal is to impact 10 million individuals positively by 2025, fostering equity and resilience in communities worldwide.

Massachusetts Department of Elementary and Secondary Education

The Massachusetts Department of Elementary and Secondary Education provides leadership, oversight, funding, support, and accountability for the Commonwealth's approximately 400 school districts that educate close to 1 million public school children each year. We also oversees programs that serve 20,000 adult learners each year.

Building Early Childhood Partnerships: A Preschool Itinerant Team Initiative

Purpose

The purpose of this competitive grant program is to support 10–15 Massachusetts district teams to develop strategies for supporting preschool students to receive their Individualized Education Program (IEP) services in Department of Early Education and Care (EEC) licensed community-based settings1, including Head Start, child care and family child care. Support for participation in this initiative includes professional development, coaching, and resources.

The initiative will include in-person professional development for the awarded teams (anticipated to begin in late winter), monthly coaching for the community team (anticipated to begin in early spring and last throughout the summer) and virtual and/or in-person networking opportunities with communities that have implemented the itinerant team model.

Priorities

The main priority of this competitive grant program is to select 10–15 district/community teams, consisting of district, community-based preschool program and Early Intervention administrators/staff, that are prepared to collaborate with one another to develop a local itinerant team model to ensure that preschool children with IEPs have access to inclusive settings with their peers.

Priority will be given to districts and schools that:

• Are in the strategic transformation region;
• Are below the 95% threshold for Indicator 12 and have a rating of zero or one for Indicator 6; and/or
• have a rating of a zero for Indicator 6.

Fund Use

Funds may be used to support participation of team members in the:

• in-person professional development;
• development of an action plan related to the development of a Preschool Itinerant Team that could be implemented in the 2026-2027 school year; and
• development of resources that may be needed related to the implementation of a Preschool Itinerant Team model, including but not limited to outreach materials, training materials, a needs assessment and a cost analysis.

Fund use can include coordinator time, travel to in-person professional development, other professional development needs, site visits to communities currently implementing a preschool itinerant team model, stipends, substitutes and resource development.

The Golden LEAF Colleges and Universities Scholarship aims to support high school seniors and community college transfer students from economically distressed rural counties in North Carolina. This scholarship not only covers tuition and room and board but also fosters leadership development and career opportunities. Recipients are encouraged to commit to returning to their communities after graduation, thus contributing to the economic growth and sustainability of rural North Carolina.

Beyond tuition, many funds support total cost of attendance — books, fees, equipment, and in some cases childcare or transportation.

Checks are made payable to the educational institution indicated on the follow-up and mailed directly to the educational institution. Checks are typically mailed in early August.

Harry & Helen Davidson Family Scholarship Fund

The Davidson Family Scholarship was established to honor the commitment to education and service to the Battle Creek community of Harry and Helen Davidson. Harry, who served as superintendent of the Battle Creek Public Schools for a number of years, who upon his retirement from the education field, became the first executive director of the Battle Creek Community Foundation. Much of Harry and Helen's work in this community can be exemplified today through development of our fine educational system, the growth of our Community Foundation, and a strong community value for the education of our young people.
