UCHRI was founded by UC President David Gardner in 1987 as a centerpiece of the University of California’s system-wide investment in humanities research. Over the past three decades UCHRI has promoted innovation and leadership in the practice and sharing of collaborative humanistic research across all 10 UC campuses, nationally, and globally.

The University of California Humanities Research Institute facilitates experimental, interdisciplinary humanities scholarship through partnerships, research initiatives, and competitive grants.

Grants

As a grantmaking organization, UCHRI primarily funds UC faculty and graduate students who participate in innovative research and projects that engage a variety of disciplines and stakeholders.

Faculty Summer Research Funding

UCHRI is pleased to offer $5,000 summer research awards for UC faculty to conduct research during Summer. Priority will be given to early-career scholars and to projects related to UCHRI’s new theme, Sustenance. Awards should support work on a research project that requires travel, fieldwork, the consultation of archives, and related needs during the Summer quarter.

Faculty Summer Research Funding aims to stimulate new research and publication in the humanities by:

• providing funding to individuals pursuing innovative research that is of value to humanities scholars, general audiences, or both.
• supporting active research projects, but especially early-stage research requiring travel.

KeyBank's Community Grants support tax-exempt organizations that align with the Foundation's funding priorities, focusing on improving community well-being. With grants ranging from $10,000 to $25,000, eligible organizations must have an operating budget of at least $100,000 and a minimum of three years in operation. The application process is invitation-only, requiring interested organizations to submit an Expression of Interest for review, typically receiving feedback within 90 days.

The Advanced Energy Fund Grant, provided by the Ohio Department of Development, supports eligible projects aimed at reducing energy usage, costs, and fossil fuel emissions while creating or retaining jobs. This grant is available to various entities in Ohio, including businesses and non-profits, to implement energy efficiency projects. Matching funds may be required and will be evaluated based on the project's scope. Note that the application period is currently closed.

Insperity's Corporate Contributions program emphasizes community involvement and corporate citizenship, providing philanthropic grants and event sponsorships to 501(c)(3) nonprofit organizations. Eligible organizations must engage Insperity employees or contribute to the communities where they operate. The program aims to support nonprofits in achieving their service goals and enhancing community welfare. Applications must be submitted 90 days prior to events, and funding requests can be made once a year.

The Community Empowerment Small Grants (CESGs) by the Community Foundation for Muskegon County aim to strengthen local communities through grassroots initiatives. Designed for organizations with budgets under $100,000, these grants support projects such as neighborhood clean-ups, financial literacy classes, and community conversations. Eligible applicants include residents, neighborhood associations, and grassroots groups. Grants can range from $500 to $3,000, fostering educational advancement and enhancing community relationships.

The Trans-Antarctic Grants Program, run by the Trans-Antarctic Association, supports scientific research and expeditions in Antarctica, offering grants up to £1,500. Priority is given to early career scientists and non-salaried researchers. With a total funding pool of £10,000 to £15,000 annually, grants are available for eligible nationals from Australia, New Zealand, South Africa, and the UK, promoting vital research in the unique Antarctic environment.

The Portland Foundation Women’s Giving Circle Grant aims to enhance the quality of life in Jay County, Indiana, by empowering women philanthropists. Established in 1951, this initiative supports tax-exempt organizations to address community needs through grants. With a focus on collaboration and resource pooling, the Circle seeks to award a $5,000 grant to strengthen local nonprofit organizations and their programming, ensuring a lasting impact on the community.

The Colonel Robert H. Morse Foundation Grant supports community initiatives that address critical issues such as food insecurity, homelessness, and access to affordable housing in the Greater Beloit area. By funding programs that promote nutritious food access and job retraining, the foundation aims to improve overall community health and well-being. Organizations eligible for funding must demonstrate a social significance and local benefit, thereby enhancing the lives of individuals across diverse backgrounds.

The Portland Foundation Winter Grant aims to enhance the quality of life in Jay County, Indiana, by supporting charitable organizations and community agencies. Established in 1951, the foundation focuses on funding start-up costs, one-time projects, and capital needs that directly address local charitable requirements. Eligible applicants include both new and existing organizations that can demonstrate a clear connection to Jay County's needs. The foundation does not support individual projects, political activities, or operating deficits.

The Trinity Trust offers Community Response Grants to benefit Trinity County residents in California. Managed by the Humboldt Area Foundation, these grants address urgent community needs where small investments can create a significant impact. Eligible projects include building partnerships, engaging youth, and enhancing organizational capacity. Nonprofit organizations, public schools, and government agencies may apply. However, grants are not available for expenses outside the service area or for religious activities.

Envista Credit Union is dedicated to supporting local nonprofits through its donation requests program. The Community Impact Committee reviews applications monthly, focusing on meaningful contributions that strengthen community ties. Envista aims to inspire and lead by fostering collective efforts for positive change. However, donations are selective and will not be provided for administrative expenses, political causes, or individual benefits. The goal is to uplift the community as a whole, reflecting Envista's commitment to social responsibility.

Sherwood Trust offers Core Grants to enhance community well-being in the Walla Walla Valley. The Trust prioritizes funding for initiatives that strengthen organizations and support collaboration. Eligible applicants include tax-exempt organizations focused on local needs. With a commitment to equity and sustainability, Sherwood Trust seeks to empower communities through impactful investments, ensuring that all individuals feel a sense of belonging and can contribute to the region's vibrancy.

Community Vision Fund- Technical Assistance Grants

Providing support in the form of professional advice, consulting, training, and/or strategic planning. They are designed to help organizations achieve mission sustainability and their long-term goals with more certainty and clarity. ​

The FTSC Community Grants aim to enhance the quality of life in the Tri-State area by providing funding for innovative projects that strengthen non-profits and address significant community challenges. Eligible organizations, including 501(c)(3) charities, can apply for these grants, with a focus on improving management capacity and testing new solutions. The Foundation awards grants biannually, ensuring a responsive approach to community needs.

The Merancas Foundation, established in 1989, is a private foundation based in Charlotte, NC. It supports 501(c)(3) nonprofits focused on providing pathways to self-sufficiency and helping individuals in crisis. Grants are available for initiatives in education, housing, and wellbeing within specific geographic areas, including Atlanta, Charlotte, and Trenton. The foundation aims to empower communities while ensuring that its support aligns with its mission and values.

The Hometown Grant provides funding up to $5,000 for community projects in Warren, Markle, and Andrews. This initiative aims to enhance the quality of life by supporting local events and improvements, such as park upgrades and community programs. Applications must focus on charitable purposes and demonstrate community impact and need. The grant is overseen by local committees ensuring accountability and relevance to residents' needs.

The Ripley County Community Foundation Grantmaking Program aims to enhance the quality of life in Ripley County through strategic grantmaking. Governed by a knowledgeable Board of Directors, the program supports 501(c)(3) organizations, including government entities and schools, with funding up to $500. The Foundation emphasizes equitable access, ensuring that grant funds are distributed without discrimination based on race, gender, or other characteristics, thereby fostering community development and leadership.

The Montrose Community Foundation Impact Grants aim to foster community-driven solutions that enhance giving, leadership, and service, ultimately improving the quality of life for all residents. These grants support organizations that demonstrate financial responsibility, encourage innovative approaches, and prioritize collaboration. With funding between $1,000 and $5,000, the grants are available for programs that address the needs of underserved populations in Montrose County, ensuring a vibrant and inclusive community.

The Clintonville Area Foundation’s Community Fund supports initiatives that enhance the quality of life in the Clintonville Area School District. The fund provides grants for creative projects, improvements to existing services, small capital investments, and recurring events, typically up to $2,500 annually for three years. Eligible organizations include public charities and government units, while grants are not awarded for multi-year requests, major capital projects, or general operating expenses.

The A. Lindsay and Olive B. O’Connor Foundation offers grants exceeding $5,000 to support projects that directly benefit Delaware County, NY. While proposals under $100,000 are preferred, larger submissions are also considered. Eligible applicants include municipalities, religious organizations, and IRS-recognized 501(c)(3) entities. The foundation does not fund individuals or projects seeking repayment for debts. Its primary focus remains on enhancing the quality of life in Delaware County.

The Cherokee Strip Community Foundation, established in 2000, aims to enhance the quality of life in Northwest Oklahoma. With over $32 million in assets, it distributes more than $1 million annually through its Annual Competitive Grants. The foundation prioritizes projects that address community needs, promote collaboration among non-profits, and leverage additional funding. Eligible applicants must be IRS tax-exempt non-profits from the Cherokee Strip Region, with grants typically ranging from $1,000 to $10,000.

Central Kentucky Community Foundation Grant

CKCF strives to enhance communities by uniting people and investing resources through philanthropy. We are committed to building philanthropic resources that will enrich the lives of people who live in our nine-county region encompassing Breckinridge, Grayson, Hardin, Hart, LaRue, Marion, Meade, Nelson, and Washington counties. One of the ways we carry out this work is through a meaningful and impactful grants program.

The nonprofit organizations serving our communities provide vital services and opportunities making this a great place to call home. Our nonprofits work to help fulfill their mission and bring new opportunities to our community, but serving a growing region comes with challenges. To meet the ever-changing needs of our community, CKCF’s Granted program offers funding opportunities to our local nonprofits.

This program offers grant funding in three categories:

• Capacity Building: funding organizational and financial stability, program quality, and growth, allowing nonprofits to carry out their mission more effectively.
• Capital Improvement: funding essential items to help organizations fulfill their mission. These grants are typically a one-time expense.
• Programming: funding ideas or expand existing programs that align with the mission of the organization.

Funding

Organizations may apply for funding in only one category for up to $7,500. Additionally, we will offer the opportunity for a “stretch” ask for up to $10,000 enabling nonprofits to receive additional funding to strengthen their project.

The Emerging Philanthropists Fund Grant, offered by the Community Foundation of Central Illinois, supports innovative projects that meet community needs. Grants up to $5,000 are available for organizations with 501(c)(3) status that create evidence-based, unique programs. The fund emphasizes collaboration and measurable outcomes, encouraging emerging leaders to participate in philanthropy. Eligible organizations must serve the central Illinois area, excluding Knox and McLean County, and adhere to established grantmaking principles.

The Community Foundation of Fort Valley Fund Grant Program supports projects in Fort Valley and nearby areas, focusing on non-sectarian community outreach initiatives. Eligible applicants include nonprofits, higher education institutions, and faith-based organizations. The average grant amount is $2,500, with only one proposal allowed per nonprofit within a twelve-month period. This funding opportunity aims to enhance local community engagement and outreach efforts.

The Lamar Gives 365 Grant Program, managed by the Barnesville-Lamar Community Foundation, unites community members to enhance local initiatives. Each participant contributes $365 annually, enabling a total grant pool of approximately $32,000. Eligible applicants include 501(c)(3) nonprofits, schools, and government entities focused on community projects in Barnesville-Lamar County. The program emphasizes community involvement, with members voting on grant recipients after reviewing presentations from finalists.

The North Georgia Community Foundation offers the NGCF Community Grant Program, which provides funding between $500 and $25,000 to 501(c)(3) nonprofits in North Georgia. Eligible organizations can apply for operational or programmatic grants, but must submit a detailed application and budget. Recipients of Community Grants can also apply for other NGCF funding in the same year. This initiative aims to enhance the quality of life in the region through various community-focused projects.

The Bush Prize: South Dakota recognizes organizations that excel in community problem-solving and are valued by their communities. Grants can be up to $500,000, covering 25% of an organization's recent fiscal expenses. Eligible applicants include 501(c)(3) public charities and government entities, with a focus on local innovations. This initiative, a collaboration between the Bush Foundation and South Dakota Community Foundation, aims to support impactful community projects while fostering flexibility in funding.
