Singing for Change supports nonprofit organizations that inspire, empower, and equip people to become more self-sufficient.

Our grantees encourage personal growth among people who are marginalized. They care about the community as a whole, as well as promote the belief that collectively, people can bring about positive change and sustainable self-sufficiency through connected, diverse communities.

Most likely to be considered are organizations that keep their overhead low and collaborate with other groups in their community to find innovative ways of solving a common problem.

Singing for Change (aka SFC Charitable Foundation, Inc.) was created by Jimmy Buffett in 1995, and receives one dollar from each ticket Jimmy sells at his shows. We envision a world where nonprofit organizations, large and small, provide compelling opportunities for individuals to discover their power to make a difference. The foundation promotes work on the forefront of social change - helping people and communities become smarter, safer, stronger, healthier, and whole. 

Singing for Change (SFC) partners with progressive, community-based organizations addressing the root causes of social or environmental problems. We recently narrowed our focus to projects designed to promote self-sufficiency. 

Specifically, we look for groups that are: 

• Working to engage individuals in their communities 
• Helping people realize their full potential
• Creating lasting change in the communities they serve

We will fund operating expenses for those organizations that we feel are accomplishing these goals.

Areas Of Interest:

Children and families: Grants are awarded to programs fostering self-sufficiency and stability. Individual therapy is not funded, nor are therapeutic or recreational camps or wish-fulfillment programs.

Disenfranchised groups: SFC defines these groups as people who have been marginalized in society because of their low levels of skill, education or income, people with disabilities, and people who are homeless. 

Grants range in size from $1,000.00 to $10,000.00.

The Pittsburgh Foundation aims to foster a vibrant, equitable, and just community in the Pittsburgh region through its Foundation-Directed Grantmaking. Focus areas include Basic Needs, Equity and Social Justice, Arts and Culture, Economic Mobility, and Environmental Action. The Foundation prioritizes support for organizations serving low-income communities and those impacted by social injustices. By aligning grantmaking with community aspirations, they strive to ensure everyone can thrive and access essential resources and opportunities.

The MutualOne Charitable Foundation, established in 1998, focuses on promoting charitable, educational, and civic purposes within its market area. Grants of up to $10,000 are available for projects in workforce development, health services, education, community development, and the arts, with a special emphasis on benefiting underserved populations. The foundation prioritizes projects that demonstrate significant community impact and sustainability beyond the grant period.

The Tennant Foundation Grants support nonprofit organizations in the Minneapolis area, focusing on environmental programs, social services, workforce readiness, and cultural initiatives. Eligible applicants must be 501(c)(3) tax-exempt organizations without religious or political affiliations, demonstrating significant community impact and sound fiscal practices. Priority is given to projects involving Tennant employees and those with a history of prior funding. The Foundation aims to create a cleaner, safer, and healthier world through intentional giving.

The RBC Foundation Grants prioritize support for youth-focused programs in the Minneapolis & St. Paul area, targeting ages 15-29. Emphasis is placed on initiatives that enhance work-integrated learning, address skills gaps, and promote access to critical educational opportunities. Additionally, the Foundation invests in arts and culture, supporting emerging artists and programs that foster community engagement. Health grants focus on youth mental well-being, ensuring access to necessary care through innovative navigation and technology-based solutions.

RBC Foundation – USA aims to enhance community quality of life by supporting non-profit organizations that promote diversity and positive change. In 2023, it awarded over $2.8 million in grants, prioritizing youth programs for ages 15-29, arts access for diverse populations, and mental well-being initiatives. The foundation encourages sustainable projects that foster economic independence, providing critical support for education, mental health, and cultural enrichment, thereby making a significant impact across various communities.

The Liberty Bank Foundation Grants support nonprofit organizations that strengthen families and communities. Established in 1997, the foundation reflects Liberty Bank's commitment to improving the quality of life in the areas it serves. This grant program aims to empower local nonprofits through financial assistance, enabling them to deliver essential services and foster community development. The Textron Charitable Trust Grants support U.S.-based nonprofit organizations and educational institutions focusing on workforce development, education, arts, culture, and community health. They emphasize initiatives that enhance employment opportunities and quality of life in communities where Textron operates. Grants foster volunteerism and corporate citizenship while excluding organizations that discriminate or are politically affiliated. Eligible entities include 501(c)(3) charities and accredited K-12 institutions, ensuring funds support impactful community programs.

The Head, Heart and Hands of Indian River Club Grant, supported by the Indian River Community Foundation, aims to fund impactful projects in education, youth activities, health, and more within Indian River County. Eligible 501(c)(3) organizations can apply for grants to develop new programs, support existing ones, or expand initiatives. This grant emphasizes community needs, promoting social welfare without political or religious objectives, ensuring that funding is directed toward meaningful change.

The Abell Foundation offers Community Development Grants to support nonprofit organizations improving Baltimore's quality of life. These small grants, typically under $10,000, fund innovative projects, ongoing services, and capital initiatives aimed at addressing systemic challenges. Focused on fostering equity, the Foundation targets organizations with 501c3 status that serve Baltimore City and align with its core program areas, including health, education, and community development.

The TJX Foundation Grants support nonprofit organizations located within 15 miles of a TJX store that align with their community mission. Eligible areas include basic needs, education for at-risk youth, workforce training, and safety from domestic violence. Organizations must be a registered 501(c)(3) for at least 12 months and have a nondiscrimination policy. Applications are invited through a Letter of Inquiry, with funding decisions based on community impact.

The CFGA Extra Wish Grants, offered by the Community Foundation for Greater Atlanta, aim to support nonprofit organizations in the metro Atlanta area by providing funding for specific needs beyond operating budgets. This initiative connects donors with impactful funding requests, enhancing the daily operations of small to mid-sized organizations. By addressing unique and tangible items, the Extra Wish program fosters equity and prosperity in the region, empowering nonprofits to make a significant difference.

The Louder Than Words Grant Program, supported by the Finish Line Youth Foundation, focuses on empowering diverse and underserved communities in Indianapolis and beyond. With grant cycles addressing areas like health, workforce development, and safe communities, organizations can request up to $10,000 to support impactful programming. Eligible applicants must be 501(c)(3) organizations dedicated to fostering positive change, particularly for communities of color, ensuring equitable access to resources and opportunities.

The THRIVE Grants program, formerly known as Community Grants, offers funding of up to $10,000 to support initiatives that promote economic mobility for low-income individuals in York County. Managed by the York County Community Foundation, these grants prioritize career development, child and youth development, health, housing, and transportation. Eligible applicants include nonprofit organizations and government agencies dedicated to transforming lives and communities through impactful programs.

The Caesars Foundation supports community-focused organizations through monetary and in-kind donations, prioritizing strategic areas like social equity, climate action, and mental health. Eligible applicants include IRS-recognized nonprofits and educational institutions operating within the U.S. Requests must align with these focus areas to enhance community impact. Organizations that discriminate or operate outside the U.S. are ineligible. By fostering collaboration, the foundation aims to uplift vulnerable populations and promote sustainable practices.

The Heinz Endowments, established in 2007, is a prominent philanthropic organization in the U.S. with a focus on southwestern Pennsylvania. It provides approximately $90 million in annual grants across various sectors, including arts, civic participation, and environmental health. Organizations classified as tax-exempt under Section 501(c)(3) are encouraged to apply, while for-profit entities and individuals are ineligible. The Endowments seeks transformative ideas that benefit local communities.

The Helen Irwin Littauer Educational Trust Grant supports charitable organizations in Tarrant County, focusing on education, arts, and human services. Established in 1969 by Mrs. Littauer, who was dedicated to community service and youth education, the Trust prioritizes scholarships for deserving students, especially in journalism, and alleviating human suffering. Organizations must skip one grant cycle before reapplying, ensuring fair access to funding for all eligible charities.

The Piedmont Natural Gas Company Grant Program, part of the Duke Energy Foundation, supports community vitality through grants of $20,000 or less. Focus areas include vibrant economies, climate resiliency, and promoting opportunity and inclusion. Eligible organizations must have tax-exempt status and serve communities without discrimination. The foundation prioritizes measurable community impact and does not fund certain entities, including for-profits and religious organizations. Applications are accepted year-round on a rolling basis.

The Consumers Energy Foundation Grant aims to assist Michigan communities by funding innovative projects that enhance people's lives, protect the environment, and promote economic prosperity. Eligible applicants must align their initiatives with the foundation's focus areas, which include reducing poverty, environmental preservation, and economic development. Notably, the foundation primarily supports tax-exempt organizations based in Michigan, while also considering projects that significantly benefit the state. Applicants are encouraged to review eligibility criteria and grant standards before applying.

The Reinberger Foundation offers education grants to support underserved individuals in Northeast and Central Ohio. Priority is given to organizations with recent funding history. Eligible organizations must be 501(c)(3) non-profits serving low-income populations, including schools, adult education, and workforce development programs. The foundation focuses on Cuyahoga and Franklin Counties, with specific considerations for grant requests. Organizations should discuss their proposals with the foundation before submitting applications.

The Competitive Community Grants - Spring Cycle invites proposals from organizations in Santa Fe, Mora, Rio Arriba, and San Miguel counties. Focus areas include civic and economic opportunities, health and human services, and empowerment of Black futures. The program supports initiatives that promote workforce development, affordable housing, food security, and community engagement. Grants range from $5,000 to $20,000 based on annual budget, fostering impactful change in local communities.

The Semi-Annual Competitive Grant from the Robert G III and Maude Morgan Cabell Foundation supports capital projects for tax-exempt organizations in Virginia. Established in 1957, the foundation emphasizes strategic grants that inspire community engagement and leverage donor generosity. Eligible nonprofits, particularly in the Richmond area, can apply for matching funds to enhance cultural arts, education, and social services. The foundation's goal is to address philanthropic needs while fostering long-term community development.

The Community Ties Giving Program by Union Pacific Foundation offers local grants aimed at enhancing community well-being through diverse funding priorities. These include safety initiatives, workforce development, community vitality, and environmental sustainability. The program emphasizes supporting organizations that promote diversity, equity, and inclusion, aiming to create impactful projects that resonate with Union Pacific's heritage and mission. Eligible applicants must be nonprofit organizations serving Union Pacific communities and demonstrate a clear need and capacity to deliver effective programming.

The Vermont Community Foundation offers the Nonprofit Capacity Building Grant to support consultant fees for nonprofits aiming to enhance their organizational capacity. Grants of up to $5,000 are available for strategic planning, financial sustainability, and diversity initiatives. Applications are prioritized for organizations with annual budgets under $250,000, and the program is open to tax-exempt entities serving Vermont. The grant program closes on November 14, 2025, and will reopen in February 2026.

The Hillman Foundation, established in 1951, aims to enhance the quality of life in Pittsburgh and southwestern Pennsylvania. It focuses on strategic grantmaking for economic development, health, education, human services, the arts, and the environment. The Foundation prioritizes initiatives that foster community growth, support arts and culture, and address social determinants of health. It primarily funds tax-exempt organizations serving the ten counties of southwestern Pennsylvania.

The GFF Capital Grants by the Gates Family Foundation support capital projects for nonprofit organizations in Colorado, emphasizing community needs and sustainable development. With a focus on enhancing public resources and addressing historical inequities, the foundation prioritizes projects that foster education, environmental protection, and community development. Eligible applicants must be 501(c)(3) organizations, demonstrating strong community support and effective management. Capital grants are not given for general operating expenses, loans, or projects already completed.

The Subaru of America Foundation, established in 1984, aims to enhance community welfare by funding 501(c)(3) organizations in Camden. The Partnership Grants focus on improving employment opportunities and environmental sustainability for local residents, having awarded over $24 million through various initiatives. The Foundation seeks projects that align with these goals while excluding requests from organizations not adhering to their values or those outside Camden. Individual applicants and certain organizations are not eligible.
