Education / Meritorious / Service Awards

The Educational/Meritorious/Service awards recognize individuals who have made notable contributions to the welding industry. From educators who have advanced welding knowledge to those who've exhibited outstanding service, these awards celebrate dedication, expertise, and the advancement of welding as both an art and a science.

Dalton E. Hamilton Memorial CWI of the Year Award

This award, administered by the Certification Committee, is given annually by the American Welding Society as a means of recognizing individuals participating in the Senior Certified Welding Inspector (SCWI) and Certified Welding Inspector (CWI) program whose inspection, American Welding Society, professional activity and civic activities are considered to have enhanced public awareness and opinion of both the Society and the CWI program or otherwise have made an outstanding contribution to the science of welding inspection.

This award is recognized at the National, District and Section levels. The nominee is selected at least 12 months in advance of FABTECH. Selections for the Section and District awards are made during the annual District Conference meetings. District and Section level recognitions are automatic but National level nominee information is submitted to the AWS Certification Committee for final selection.

• A nomination form must be submitted, along with an introduction letter of support and a complete resume or CV of the individual’s qualifications. Complete National nominations must be received by February 1st.

The Community Foundation for Northeast Florida offers Small Organization Grants to nonprofits with budgets of $150,000 or less. These one-time grants support projects that meet community needs and strengthen small organizations, particularly in areas such as community building, basic needs support, and youth enrichment. Eligible organizations must have 501(c)(3) status and operate within specific counties. For more information, visit their FAQs.

The WMU Department of Chemistry offers the Dr. Don Berndt Endowment for Chemistry, established in 2013 to support outstanding graduate students. This scholarship is awarded to full-time students serving as effective teaching assistants in general or organic chemistry courses, with a minimum GPA of 3.0. The endowment honors Professor Emeritus Don Berndt and aims to enhance the educational experience of students within the chemistry program.

Outstanding Achievement Awards

The AWS Outstanding Achievement Awards honor exceptional contributions in welding, spanning historical structures, innovative fabrication, safety, and technical advancements across various categories.

Distinguished Welder Award

This award recognizes an individual whose welding skills and experience would earn them the recognition of being an AWS Distinguished Welder.

A complete nomination packet should include information addressing the Definition and candidate's Application Criteria as outlined in the AWS Distinguished Welder Award Nomination Form. The focus of the nomination packet should include specifics of the individual's skills.

The Small Arts Grants Program, supported by The Francis Family Foundation, is dedicated to fostering arts and culture in the greater Kansas City area. Organizations eligible for funding include tax-exempt public charities and community-based arts programs. The Foundation aims to enhance creative participation and ensure diverse cultural expressions are accessible to all. With a focus on supporting local initiatives, this program seeks to make a significant impact on the region's artistic landscape.

The Bloomhall Family Grant, offered by the Greater Cedar Rapids Community Foundation, supports nonprofit organizations in Linn County, Iowa. This grant focuses on health-related activities and is available for programmatic or capital purposes. Eligible applicants include 501(c)(3) organizations and those with fiscal sponsors. Grants are awarded for a duration of 12 months, enhancing community impact through various funding opportunities. Organizations can apply for funding to develop innovative projects that align with the foundation's commitment to justice and creativity. The Lorrie Otto Seeds for Education Grant Program, funded by Wild Ones, supports projects that foster an appreciation for nature through native plants and natural landscapes. Since 1977, it has empowered schools and nature centers to create educational gardens that engage students and volunteers. Eligible projects include pollinator and rain gardens, tallgrass prairies, and sensory playgrounds, all designed to enhance ecological understanding. Funding is specifically for the purchase of native plants and seeds, promoting sustainable community involvement.

The NSF Rapid Response Grants support grassroots organizations in New York City and the Hudson Valley that are led by people directly impacted by injustice. These grants enable activists to respond to urgent threats or opportunities, aiming for specific outcomes within three to six months. Emphasizing systemic change, the fund prioritizes organizations that are democratically structured and focus on social justice, particularly those with limited access to traditional funding sources.

The Morgan Family Foundation offers Social Equity Grants to support innovative initiatives and projects that promote social equity in St. Cloud, Minnesota. Grants are primarily awarded to 501(c)(3) nonprofit organizations and may also support advocacy efforts and capacity building. The Foundation focuses on reducing disparities faced by marginalized communities, fostering collaboration, and enhancing community leadership, all while adhering to its mission of ensuring equitable outcomes for all individuals.

The Columbus Foundation

In 1943, during the darkness of World War II, a group of passionate citizens, led by Columbus businessman Harrison M. Sayre, envisioned a way to improve the well-being of the community and the quality of life in central Ohio. With little more than this sound idea and faith, The Columbus Foundation was established.

Digital Access Grants

Support for programming designed to offer training or technical support, or expanding the affordability and accessibility of digital technology and the internet to individuals and communities with limited access.

Not everyone has the same level of access to reliable internet service, or the devices and skills needed for work, commerce, education, healthcare, transportation, and civic engagement.

In response to the urgent technology needs of nonprofits and the communities they serve, The Central Ohio Digital Access Fund was established in July 2020. A group of local partners and institutions works on internet affordability, access to devices, and programs across the community that offer training and technical skill building for life and careers in the twenty-first century. 

The Obici Healthcare Foundation offers Community Engagement Grants to support nonprofit initiatives that enhance the health of local residents. These one-time grants, ranging from $500 to $5000, are intended for programs that address community health needs, promote wellness, and improve health awareness. Applications are accepted on a rolling basis, and the Foundation prioritizes collaborative projects that innovate and sustain long-term health improvements in Virginia and North Carolina.

Louisiana Project Grants

Louisiana Project Grants (LPG), formerly the Decentralized Arts Funding program (DAF), solely funds project assistance for innovative, community-based arts projects that will have a lasting community impact. LPG is administered jointly by the Louisiana Division of the Arts (LDOA) and the Arts Council of Greater Baton Rouge.

LPG grants are available to eligible applicants domiciled in one of the ten parishes represented by the Arts Council of Greater Baton Rouge. Grant amounts range from $2,500 to $7,500.

The Mattoon Foundation for Academic Excellence offers Community Engagement Grants aimed at fostering collaboration between classrooms and the local community. These grants support projects that engage students and families, promoting hands-on learning and shared responsibility for educational success. Eligible applicants include teachers and staff from Mattoon Community Unit School District 2, who must demonstrate support from school administrators and community partners. This initiative enhances civic well-being and empowers students to appreciate their community's culture and history.

Texas State Library and Archives Commission

The Texas State Library and Archives Commission has been serving the people of Texas for more than a century. Since 1909, when the state founded the agency, we have been supporting the reading, learning, and historical preservation needs of Texas and its people. 

Going back to the days of the Republic, there has always been an official library and archives of Texas. While fulfilling our unique and longstanding place serving Texas government, the State Library and Archives Commission mission is also to ensure that citizens have information they need to lead informed, productive, and fulfilled lives.

Family Place Libraries™ Grant 

The Family Place Libraries Training Institute (Family Place) provides theoretical grounding and practical training for library staff in family-centered library services. By expanding the traditional role of children's services, Family Place participants build on the knowledge that good health, early learning, parent or guardian involvement, and supportive communities play a critical role in young children's growth and development.

Family Place participants will be able to create the network that families need to nurture their children's development during the critical first years of life. Family Place provides training and resources to help participants redesign their library environment to:

• Create a welcoming and developmentally appropriate environment for children beginning at birth.
• Connect parents with the resources, programs, and services offered at the library and other family service agencies.
• Connect with non-traditional library users.
• Ensure children have access to resources that will allow them to enter school ready and able to learn.

The Family Place Libraries model was developed by the Middle Country Public Library in Centereach, New York. Currently, there are 126 Family Place library locations in Texas. 

Applicants may submit an application to become a new Family Place Library or expand their current program to an additional location. 

The National Science Foundation is piloting a no-deadline submission process for the Division of Chemistry's CLP, CSDM-A, and CTMC Programs. This initiative aims to enhance flexibility for principal investigators and promote interdisciplinary research. However, it may also present challenges and unintended consequences for PIs, reviewers, and institutions. Proposals can be submitted at any time, although certain exceptions apply, including specific deadlines for CAREER proposals and RUI/ROA solicitations.

American Physical Society

The American Physical Society is a nonprofit membership organization working to advance physics by fostering a vibrant, inclusive, and global community dedicated to science and society. APS represents more than 50,000 members, including physicists in academia, national laboratories, and industry in the United States and around the world.

APS Honors recognizes and celebrates the accomplishments of the global physics community. Guided by our core values, APS Honors encourages nominations that reflect the full range of talent, distinction, and experience in our field, and supports broad canvassing for professional achievement across diverse backgrounds, perspectives, and expertise.

Joseph F. Keithley Award For Advances in Measurement Science

To recognize physicists who have been instrumental in the development of measurement techniques or equipment that have impact on the physics community by providing better measurements. The prize consists of $5,000 and a certificate citing the contributions made by the recipient. It is presented annually.

Nominations will be considered for three review cycles provided the nominator re-certifies the nomination before the next deadline.

Texas State Library and Archives Commission

TexTreasures Grant

TexTreasures Grants are designed to help libraries make their special collections more accessible for the people of Texas and beyond. Activities considered for possible funding include: 

• digitization
• microfilming
• cataloging

There are two options for funding under the TexTreasures program:

• TexTreasures Basic which will award grants of up to $10,000 to small libraries (serving a population of up to 25,000) with little or no experience with digitization. Funding will support vendor contract services to increase access to collections with local or regional significance. 
• TexTreasures Original which will continue to support libraries seeking to provide access to special or unique collections of statewide interest and greater complexity. The maximum award is $40,000 for applications from single institutions and $50,000 for collaborative grant projects.

The Barbara Upton Wilson Fund, managed by the Hampton Roads Community Foundation, supports 501(c)(3) nonprofit organizations providing humane treatment and care for animals in southeastern Virginia. This grant aims to enhance the quality of life for animals, ensuring they receive necessary care. Eligible organizations include those from South Hampton Roads and the Virginia Peninsula. However, grants are not available for certain activities, including fundraising events or support for individuals.

The Anne Sleep Award, established by Mrs. Ivy Sleep in memory of her daughter, supports biological research in the Middle and Far East. Grants of up to £3,000 are awarded every two years to researchers with a PhD from recognized institutions. Eligibility includes researchers conducting studies in the specified regions or scholars from these areas undertaking research in the UK. Collaboration with other organizations is encouraged, although restrictions apply to funding in sanctioned countries.

The Grant for Technology Opportunities Program - Capacity Funding aims to enhance digital equity in Austin by providing matching funds to local organizations. This initiative supports projects that increase access to technology, improve digital skills, and expand internet usage among citizens. To be eligible, applicants must be tax-exempt organizations in Austin, comply with City purchasing requirements, and demonstrate alignment with program goals. This grant fosters a community where everyone can participate fully in the digital society.

American Physical Society

Leo Szilard Lectureship Award

To recognize outstanding accomplishments by physicists in promoting the use of physics for the benefit of society in such areas as the environment, arms control, and science policy. The lecture format is intended to increase the visibility of those who have promoted the use of physics for the benefit of society. The award consists of $5,000, a certificate citing the contributions of the recipient, plus $2,000 travel expenses for lectures given by the recipient at an APS meeting and at two or more educational institutions or research laboratories in the year following the award. The lectures should be especially aimed at physicists early in their careers.

Nominations will be considered for three review cycles provided the nominator re-certifies the nomination before the next deadline.

The Grant for Technology Opportunities Program - Mini Funding supports Austin organizations in enhancing technology access, providing digital training, and improving internet connectivity for underserved communities. With individual grants ranging from $5,000 to $10,000, and a total funding pool of $60,000, this initiative aims to foster digital equity and empower residents to fully engage in the digital society. Eligible applicants include incorporated, tax-exempt organizations in Austin with specific revenue limits.

The Book Hook Fund, established by a supporter of Alaskan Brewing Co, aims to enhance library resources in small rural communities across Alaska. With its inaugural grants, including $1000 to Tri Valley Library in Healy, the fund has significantly contributed to expanding children's literature collections. This initiative fosters literacy and learning in communities with populations of 5,000 or less, ensuring that access to quality reading materials is available to all.

The Fall Cycle: Bill and Jacquelyn Jordan Anderson Fund for Visual Arts, managed by the Southeastern Illinois Community Foundation, supports artistic initiatives in Effingham County. This fund aims to foster cultural enrichment and community engagement through various art projects. By providing grants, it empowers local artists and organizations to enhance the visual arts landscape in the region, ensuring that the arts remain a vibrant part of the community's identity and growth.

The John C. Lasko Foundation Trust Grant supports the construction of worship spaces across the nation, requiring churches to fund at least 50% of the project costs. Established by John C. Lasko, the foundation aims to build enduring churches that adhere to its mission. Grants are specifically for sanctuary construction, and applicants must own the land designated for the church. Notably, funds are not available for debt repayment or non-sanctuary areas.
