Renewable Energy Fund

About REF

The REF benefits Alaskans by reducing and stabilizing energy costs through the development of renewable energy projects. The program is designed to produce cost-effective renewable energy for heat and power to benefit Alaskans statewide. The Alaska State Legislature established the REF in 2008. With the passage of House Bill 62 in 2023, the sunset date was removed from Alaska Statute, extending the program in perpetuity.

The REF is managed by AEA in coordination with a nine-member REF Advisory Committee. The program provides grant funding for the development of qualifying and competitively selected renewable energy projects.

Renewable Energy Fund Round 18

The REF funds projects across all development phases, serving as a catalyst for the continued pursuit of integrating proven and nascent technologies within Alaska’s energy portfolio.

Eligible projects must be a new project not in operation in 2008, and 

• be a hydroelectric facility;
• direct use of renewable energy resources;
• a facility that generates electricity from fuel cells that use hydrogen from renewable energy sources or natural gas (subject to additional conditions);
• or be a facility that generates electricity using renewable energy.
• natural gas applications must also benefit a community that: has a population of 10,000 or less, and does not have economically viable renewable energy resources it can develop.

The Onslow Caring Communities Foundation Grants, managed by the North Carolina Community Foundation, aim to support nonprofit organizations in Onslow County. With grant amounts ranging from $750 to $3,000, and up to $16,000 available for broader charitable purposes, the foundation encourages projects that enhance community welfare. Eligible organizations must be tax-exempt public charities or local government units, fostering initiatives that promote social outreach and animal welfare without discrimination.

The MPS Materials Research Programs, funded by the National Science Foundation, aim to enhance the understanding of materials and their diverse applications. These programs cover areas such as biomaterials, ceramics, condensed matter physics, and electronic materials. With an emphasis on transformative research, NSF MPS encourages proposals that are innovative and foundational, without the necessity for immediate commercial outcomes, fostering long-term advancements in materials science.

The North Smithfield Ambulance & Rescue Association Fund Grants, supported by The Rhode Island Community Foundation, aim to enhance the health and welfare of North Smithfield citizens. Established in 2003, these grants typically range from $800 to $2,500. Preference is given to nonprofit organizations in Providence, RI, lacking access to other funding sources. Note that applications from organizations with overdue grant reports will not be considered. This initiative reflects a commitment to addressing local community needs effectively.

The Glenn R. Stewart Student Travel Fund, established to honor Dr. Glenn R. Stewart, supports students working with North American Gopherus tortoises by covering travel costs to the Desert Tortoise Council Annual Symposium. Enhearten Micro Grant supports unseen leaders by providing funding for community-driven projects that embody values of humility, integrity, and love. Grants range from $500 to $1,000 and are awarded after a thorough review process. Enhearten aims to empower these leaders, who often lack access to traditional funding sources, by fostering reparative networks that prioritize equality and justice. This initiative seeks to create opportunities for transformative community engagement and support.

The Douglas Community Fund Grant offers competitive grants aimed at supporting medical and other community needs within Douglas County. Applications are welcomed for the spring cycle, prioritizing a diverse array of projects that benefit the region. Established by the Douglas Community Foundation, the program continues to focus on addressing essential medical needs, reflecting its origins in supporting local healthcare facilities.

The Brush Family Foundation Fund aims to empower communities in Downs, Kansas, through competitive grants that support charitable initiatives. By collaborating with donors and local organizations, the Fund promotes transparency, integrity, and excellence, ensuring that contributions directly impact the community. Eligible entities include 501(c)(3) organizations, government, educational, and religious institutions. The IAC Mission

The mission of the Interagency Commission on School Construction is to achieve a safe, healthy, and educationally sufficient learning environment for every child attending a public school in Maryland. Our vision is a fiscally sustainable statewide portfolio of Pre-K-12 school facilities that will remain educationally sufficient for current and future generations of students and teachers.

Capital Improvement Program

The CIP is the State’s largest school construction program, averaging at least $280 million per year in recent years. CIP funding can be used for major new, renewal, or replacement projects as well as for addition projects or capital maintenance projects (systemic renovations). 

The CIP includes supplemental funding from the Significant Enrollment Growth and Relocatable Classroom (EGRC) Capital Grant Program.

The program is governed by Title 5, Subtitle 3 of the Education Article, Annotated Code of Maryland and regulations promulgated by the IAC in the Code of Maryland Regulations (COMAR).

The Animal Welfare Endowment Fund Grant, established by the Community Foundation of the North State, aims to support organizations dedicated to the welfare and care of animals in Shasta, Siskiyou, and Tehama counties. This grant provides general support to eligible nonprofits, public entities, and fiscally-sponsored projects that promote the welfare of pets, wildlife, and working animals, emphasizing collaboration and data-driven impact.

Dwight Nicholson Medal for Outreach

This award recognizes the humanitarian aspect of physics and physicists created through public lectures and public media, teaching, research, or science related activities. Recognition consists of a stipend of $3,000, Nicholson medal, and a certificate which includes the citation for which the recipient has been recognized. Up to $1,500 will be available for the recipient's travel expenses to the meeting at which the Medal is presented. It will be presented annually.

The Local Accountability Systems is a district-wide initiative through which districts and open-enrollment charter schools develop a plan to evaluate the performance of their campuses locally. Local Accountability Systems seek to engage the community and district in establishing locally relevant accountability measures, provide parents, families, and communities with detail information about local school performance and progress over time, and continuously improve student performance and preparedness for post-secondary success. 

The Smithsonian Institution is offering the Margaret S. Vining and Barton C. Hacker Fellowship in Women's Military History for the 2025-26 term. This fellowship invites research on women’s roles in national defense up to 1945, utilizing the museum's extensive collections. Stipends of up to $30,000 are available, depending on the candidate's status. Applicants must reside in Washington, DC and commit to a minimum of three days per week at the museum. This funding pathway supports organizations pursuing significant opportunities—such as scaling proven programs, strengthening organizational capacity, or advancing transformational projects—in alignment with HCCF’s priority areas.

Strategic Grants may also support organizations navigating significant funding disruptions, where a targeted investment can help stabilize operations, preserve critical services, or position the organization for long-term sustainability.

What is Funded

Strategic Grants support high-impact opportunities that are significant in scope and positioned for long-term community benefit. Funding may include:

• Organizational capacity-building and expansion
• Transformational or large-scale community initiatives
• Capital campaigns (matching funds required)
• Time-sensitive opportunities to stabilize operations following the loss of significant funding

The Process

Strategic Grants are offered through an invitation-only process. HCCF proactively engages organizations whose work aligns with this funding pathway and demonstrates strong potential to create lasting community impact.

In prioritizing invitations, HCCF often considers organizations with a history of partnership or prior funding, while also remaining responsive to emerging opportunities and community needs.

Organizations that have not received an invitation but believe their work aligns with the goals of Strategic Grants may submit a brief request for special consideration. Due to the limited and highly targeted nature of this funding opportunity, submission of this form does not guarantee an invitation to apply.

The PLTW Computer Science grant supports public and charter schools in Georgia to implement PLTW Computer Science programs. Schools in designated counties can apply for a total of $20,000, distributed over two years, to fund essential course materials and training. Grantees must offer at least two different courses within the 2026-2028 academic years, enhancing education in technology and programming for students. This initiative aims to foster STEM learning and prepare students for future careers.

The CCWH/Berks Graduate Student Fellowship, offered by the Coordinating Council for Women in History, provides a $1000 award to graduate students in U.S. history departments who are completing a dissertation. This fellowship aims to support crucial research stages or the final year of writing. Applicants must be graduate students who have achieved A.B.D. status and may specialize in any history field, ensuring diverse representation in women's history.

The CGF Major Grant Program offers annual funding of up to $75,000 to support horticulture-related projects by nonprofit and governmental agencies in Colorado. Past recipients include notable organizations like the Denver Botanic Gardens and Craig Hospital Therapy Garden. This grant focuses on capital and matching grants, while also considering other relevant programs.
