Best Operating Grants for Nonprofits

First Generation College Scholarship

Taos Community Foundation is offering a premier scholarship award to High School Graduates from Taos County wishing to pursue advancement of higher education. This scholarship is to enable a student as a first- generation learner in their family to seek higher education.

The First Generation College Scholarship is a comprehensive college scholarship that pays towards the costs of tuition and fees, room and board, books and supplies. It is a supplemental or last dollar scholarship and therefore secondary to all other grants /scholarships awarded to the scholar. After considering the student’s other community or academic institutional awards, the First Generation Scholarship Fund will pay toward the remaining costs of the scholar’s education. The amount of the scholarship is unique to each scholar and can vary from year to year, and could be up to an annual award of $15,000.00 per year for 4 years.

This is a 4 year award provided a 3.0 GPA is maintained during the award period and that all required paperwork is submitted in accordance with the Scholarship Agreement that will be presented at the time of selection.

This scholarship also allows for students to enroll at a University that is part of the Western Undergraduate Exchange (WUE), as administered by the Western Interstate Commission for Higher Education (www.wiche.edu). This regional tuition-reciprocity agreement enables students from WICHE states to enroll in some 145 participating public institutions at 150 percent of the enrolling institution’s resident tuition.

The Mutual Self-Help Housing Technical Assistance Grants in Arkansas provide vital funding to organizations that assist low- and very-low-income families in building their own homes. By supervising these self-help housing projects, grant recipients empower communities while offering technical and supervisory support. Eligible applicants include government non-profit organizations, federally recognized tribes, and private non-profits. However, funds cannot be used for hiring construction workers or purchasing materials, ensuring the focus remains on community involvement and self-sufficiency.

These grants support very-low- and low-income families in building their own homes, fostering community engagement and skill development. Eligible organizations include non-profits and federally-recognized tribes. Funds can be utilized for technical assistance, recruitment, and related activities, ensuring effective project management while maintaining compliance with specific usage restrictions.

Friedman Family Scholarship

The Friedman Family Scholarship was established in 1998. The award is available to graduating seniors in Taos and western Colfax counties for students pursuing advancement of higher education. The scholarship is available to those applying to 4 year colleges and universities as well as 2 year vocational/trade schools. The award is up to $ 8,000.00 paid out at $2,000 annually for up to four years if a 3.0 GPA is maintained.

The Mutual Self-Help Housing Technical Assistance Grants in Alaska provide federal funding to qualified organizations that assist very-low- and low-income families in building their own homes in rural areas. Through this program, grant recipients offer technical and supervisory support, enabling families to collaborate on construction projects. Eligible areas can be determined using the USDA Eligibility Site, ensuring that funds are directed to the communities in need while promoting self-sufficiency among participants.

Broadband Ready Communities (BBRC) Program

The Broadband Ready Communities (BBRC) Program seeks to increase opportunities for investment in broadband infrastructure deployment within municipalities throughout the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania. This program will work to reduce procedural, policy, and permitting barriers to broadband deployment at the municipal level and to encourage broadband infrastructure investment within participating communities.

A participating municipality can register for the program on a rolling basis.

The Mutual Self-Help Housing Technical Assistance Grants in Alabama provide essential funding to organizations that assist low-income families in constructing their own homes. The MRAC Flexible Support Grant Program aims to enhance arts access for Minnesotans by funding projects that promote arts programming and strengthen organizational capacity. For FY2024, $4,301,763 is allocated, with $3,000,000 designated for organizations led by individuals who identify as BIPOC or LGBTQIA2+. This initiative encourages communities to sustain and grow their arts offerings, fostering inclusivity and diversity in the arts sector.

The Pratt-Stanton Manor Fund Grant aims to support nonprofit organizations in the Greater New Orleans region that help older adults live dignified and independent lives. With funding up to $40,000, the grant prioritizes services addressing basic needs, caregiver support, and economic security. It seeks to empower older adults, particularly those below the poverty line, ensuring they receive essential resources while fostering partnerships with like-minded organizations to enhance quality of life.

TCF Teacher Mini Grant

Taos Community Foundation offers this competitive mini grant cycle to teachers and school professionals working with students in Taos and western Colfax counties.

Taos Community Foundation is proud to support local public school teachers and educators. We appreciate your hard work in making this community thrive! This year, teacher mini grants are open to all educators in Taos county. Any school personnel who work directly with students – teachers, counselors, librarians, etc, may apply for grants up to $200.

This supplemental grant is intended for educational projects, and does not fund operational or capital expenses.

Pay-It-Forward Scholarship

This scholarship is awarded to a sophomore, junior, or senior attending Penn State University as a full-time student who is a permanent resident of Lackawanna county, who is employed full-time at Penn State through work-study or an outside employer and continues working as a full time student, and who has maintained a GPA of 2.5 or higher. When the recipient is in a position to do so in the future, he or she must commit to offering a similar scholarship opportunity to others.

The Higher Education Coordinating Commission (HECC) is a State of Oregon agency and Commission working to improve equitable access to and success in higher education and workforce training for Oregonians statewide. We coordinate funding and policy, and convene partners across the public and private higher education and workforce landscape. 

Deceased or Disabled Public Safety Officer (DDPSO) Grant

The Deceased or Disabled Public Safety Officer (DDPSO) Grant supports dependents of public safety officers in the state of Oregon who were killed or disabled in the line of duty.

We coordinate funding and policy, and convene partners across the public and private higher education and workforce landscape. 

Chafee Education and Training Voucher Program

The Chafee Education and Training Voucher Program (also know as the Chafee Grant) provides funding to help current or former foster care youth with postsecondary education and training.

The Land & Water Conservation Fund (LWCF) provides crucial federal funding for outdoor recreation projects in Iowa, supporting 50% cost share for development and land acquisition. It has facilitated popular projects such as skate parks, playgrounds, and multipurpose trails since its establishment in 1964. Applicants should anticipate a timeline of 12-24 months from application to the start of construction, ensuring thorough planning and execution of their recreational initiatives.

The Three-year NOMIS–STRI Postdoctoral Fellowships in Sociality in the Tropics offer a unique opportunity for outstanding behavioral biologists to conduct research on sociality in Panama's diverse ecosystems. Funded by the NOMIS Foundation and the Smithsonian Tropical Research Institute, these fellowships provide a yearly stipend of $62,000 and up to $13,000 for research and travel. Successful candidates will explore essential questions related to group living and social diversity, enhancing our understanding of animal societies.

The Higher Education Coordinating Commission (HECC) is a State of Oregon agency and Commission working to improve equitable access to and success in higher education and workforce training for Oregonians statewide. We coordinate funding and policy, and convene partners across the public and private higher education and workforce landscape. 

Oregon Opportunity Grant

The Oregon Opportunity Grant (OOG) is Oregon's largest state-funded, need-based grant program for college students. The grant provides funding to more than 30,000 Oregon resident students each year.

OOG is a need-based grant awarded to Oregon residents of all ages who are pursuing their first associates degree or bachelor's degree at an eligible public or private institution. Award amounts vary based on student's financial need and type of institution the student attends. There is not a separate application for the OOG. To be considered for the grant, students must submit their FAFSA or ORSAA as soon as possible each academic year. Awards are first-come, first-served until funds are depleted. 

Conditions of the Award

Oregon Opportunity Grants are available to qualified students for up to four years (12 quarters or 8 semesters) of full-time enrollment, provided they maintain satisfactory academic progress, continue to meet eligibility and award requirements, and file a new FAFSA or ORSAA each year.

The Peoples Security Bank and Trust Company Scholarship Award consists of ten $1,000 scholarships awarded annually to graduating high school seniors who are customers of Peoples Security Bank and Trust Company, or who have a parent or guardian who is a customer, and who plan to pursue postsecondary education.
