Community Foundation of the North State

The Community Foundation builds trust through relationship, integrity, and by providing safe places for donors to give their resources.

We are a nonprofit, public charity serving the people of Shasta, Siskiyou and Tehama counties, with a mission to impact the region through the power of giving.

Scholarships

The Community Foundation of the North State manages many scholarship funds that are awarded to graduating high school seniors as well as students already in an undergraduate program. Some scholarships were started by families or individuals; others by businesses or organizations. All scholarships share one important focus: helping young people reach their educational goals.

Redding Sunrise Rotary Scholarship

Redding Sunrise Rotary Club is proud to support students and programs in the Gateway Unified School District. The Club is offering scholarships to graduating high school seniors from Gateway Unified School District.

The Connecticut Department of Energy and Environmental Protection (DEEP) offers funding through its CERCLA 128(a) Grant Program, targeting municipalities and non-profit organizations. With a total funding pool of $750,000, applicants can receive up to $250,000 for assessment and an additional $250,000 for cleanup projects. DEEP prioritizes initiatives that enhance park space, greenways, and recreational areas, as well as properties designated for nonprofit use.

The Community Foundation of NCW is a tax-exempt philanthropic organization that helps individuals, families, businesses, and agencies support charitable causes throughout Chelan, Douglas, and Okanogan counties.

Bob and Nita Paine Scholarship

This scholarship was established by the Paine Family in 2012 to support graduating seniors from Wenatchee or Eastmont High Schools who plan to attend Washington State University. The ideal candidate is an engaging individual with capable communication skills who has been, and continues to be, involved in school activities and the community, and who demonstrates financial need..

The Margaret A. Friedland Fund for Children in Manitowoc County aims to support and promote positive growth opportunities for low-income and disadvantaged children. Managed by the Lakeshore Community Foundation, this fund provides essential resources and programming tailored for the community's youth. Grant amounts vary yearly, ensuring flexibility to meet the changing needs of the children served. Eligible organizations must be recognized as charitable by the IRS, fostering a collaborative effort for community enhancement.

Harriet Poynter Scholarship

The Harriet Poynter Scholarship was established to provide scholarship assistance to help defray college or university expenses of a graduating senior from Shelby County, KY who is of African American heritage.

The Undergraduate STEM Research Scholarships, funded by the Virginia Space Grant Consortium and NASA, offer up to $8,500 to full-time STEM students engaged in faculty-mentored research projects with aerospace relevance. Eligible applicants must be U.S. citizens, enrolled as juniors or seniors, and maintain a minimum GPA of 3.0. Scholarships are competitive and non-renewable, providing stipends for academic and summer research activities.

The STEM Bridge Scholarships, provided by the Virginia Space Grant Consortium, offer $1,000 to support students who are sophomores or juniors at member universities. This competitive program, funded by NASA and the Commonwealth of Virginia, aims to encourage students in STEM fields. Applicants must have a minimum GPA of 3.0 and demonstrate commitment to STEM careers, ensuring they are prepared for future opportunities in research and internships.

The Masters’ Fellowship Program, offered by the Indiana Space Grant Consortium, provides financial support ranging from $6,000 to $8,000 for graduate students engaged in STEM research or education. This initiative aims to enhance opportunities for students at INSGC affiliate institutions, fostering diversity and inclusion within STEM fields. Eligible applicants must be U.S. citizens enrolled full-time and in good academic standing. The program encourages reapplication for continued support in subsequent years.

The Doctoral Fellowship Program, initiated by NASA's National Space Grant College and Fellowship Program, aims to enhance STEM education and research opportunities across the U.S. The Indiana Space Grant Consortium (INSGC) offers fellowships ranging from $6,000 to $20,000 for eligible doctoral students engaged in STEM projects. This initiative supports the INSGC's mission to inspire and educate the next generation of scientists and engineers, ensuring a bright future for technological innovation and workforce development.

The First Nations Clean Energy Business Fund (FNCEBF) supports Indigenous communities in British Columbia to engage in clean energy projects within their traditional territories. It offers Capacity and Equity funding, with a maximum of $50,000 for Capacity funding and $500,000 for Equity funding per applicant. The fund aims to enhance community participation in the clean energy sector and promotes sustainable development through financial assistance for project feasibility and planning.

Edward E. & Beverley H. McDonald Scholarship

The Edward E. & Beverley H. McDonald Scholarship was established by Mrs. Beverley H. McDonald of Nicholasville, KY, to provide scholarship assistance to graduating seniors from Bryan Station High School, Lafayette High School, or Tates Creek High School in Lexington, KY, or any high school located in Jessamine County, KY.

The BJS FY 2026 Annual Surveys of Probation and Parole (ASPP) from 2026 to 2030 will provide crucial insights into individuals under community supervision in the U.S. By collecting comprehensive data on probation and parole populations, this initiative aims to report accurately on the dynamics and characteristics of correctional supervision. The data collection process will address various challenges, ensuring that the information reflects the realities of both large and small supervising agencies across the country.

The Veterans Assistance & Service Dog Funding Program, established by the Cornelia T. Bailey Foundation, aims to support 501(c)(3) nonprofit organizations serving veterans. This initiative enhances services like healthcare, housing, and employment support, while also facilitating the provision of service dogs for veterans facing disabilities. Applications for 2025 are closed, but interested organizations can check back in January 2026. Grants will empower nonprofits to better assist veterans in their transition to civilian life.

The Ed & Debbie Galloway Scholarship was established to provide grants to defray college or university expenses of students from Shelby County, KY, who demonstrate great promise and strong work ethic.

Virginia and Richard Matz Scholarship

Sidney High School past graduates who are pursuing an Associate’s Degree or Bachelor’s Degree. 

Selection based upon:

• Financial need, demonstrated community and school service, recommendations, and academic ability.

Awards

• Two $4,500 scholarships.

Eagles Soar Scholarship Fund

Tribute:

The scholarship was established by the Golden Eagle Club, Inc. in 2021. It is comprised of graduates of Hokes Bluff High School that have been out of school for 50 plus years. The award is made possible by donations and proceeds of a wind turbine in Texas via 1951 Hokes Bluff graduate, Mr. Don Street.

Award:

The scholarship benefits individuals pursuing a certificate, associate's degree, bachelor’s degree, or a State of Alabama-approved workforce training program. This one-time award is for either part-time or full-time enrolled students to attend any accredited institution of higher learning in the United States.

The Community Foundation will project and allocate the assets available for scholarship awards depending on the Fund's annual income. This Scholarship is strictly funded based on available assets. The award is renewable and may include tuition, institutional housing, books, and fees. Due to the renewable nature of the Fund, it may not be available on an annual basis. 

The Certified Local Government Grants Program in Illinois supports city and county governments in developing local preservation projects. Funded by federal resources from the National Park Service, this program ensures at least 10% of Illinois’ federal allocation is dedicated to participating Certified Local Governments (CLGs). With 81 CLGs currently involved, the Illinois Department of Natural Resources anticipates $110,000 to $150,000 in competitive grants for this round, fostering the preservation of historic resources.

The Dixie Fire - Small Grant Program provides funding of up to $10,000 to support nonprofits and agencies assisting evacuees and animals impacted by wildfires in the area. Eligible organizations include federally recognized tribes, 501(c)(3) nonprofits, and local government units. The program emphasizes strategic deployment of funds and collaboration with existing aid sources, ensuring that grants do not replace public funding. Applications require a detailed budget and proof of liability insurance.

The Dixie Fire Large Grant Program, managed by the North Valley Community Foundation, provides critical funding for nonprofits and agencies aiding those affected by wildfires. Organizations seeking over $10,000 must submit a detailed project budget and proof of liability insurance, while those requesting $50,000 or more must consult with a program officer beforehand. This program strategically allocates funds where other resources are unavailable, ensuring support reaches the most impacted communities.

Dunaway Scholarship

The Dunaway Scholarship was established in 2004 by Samuel M. Dunaway to provide educational grants to graduating seniors from any high school located in Breckinridge, Butler, Edmonson, Grayson, Hancock, and Ohio Counties in Kentucky. The scholarship is based on financial need and recipients will be selected on their determination and ability to successfully complete the degree and/or education program to which they are enrolled.

Dr. Lynn Wagner Scholarship

Dr. Lynn Koch Wagner's passion was history and teaching history. She was a Louisville native and Southern High School graduate, who went on to earn multiple degrees in history at Morehead State College and her Doctorate of Education at the University of Louisville. Dr. Wagner taught for more than thirty years at the University of Louisville, Bellarmine University, and Jefferson Community College. Her sister and brother-in-law, Elise and Dann Stevens, along with Dr. Wagner's brothers, sisters-in-law, nieces, and nephews, are creating this scholarship to honor her lifetime commitment to education and in the hopes of assisting other promising students in Jefferson County, Kentucky. Specifically, this scholarship is designed to provide scholarship assistance in the form of grants to help defray college or university expenses of students pursuing a college education.

Doris F. Schneider Scholarship for Women

The Doris F. Schneider Scholarship for Women was established by Ellen Schneider in honor of her mother, Doris F. Schneider, a lifelong proponent of women’s education and reproductive rights. The fund is designed to provide scholarship assistance in the form of grants to help defray college or university expenses of women pursuing college educations.

The Hearst Journalism Awards Program, established in 1960, supports college journalism education by awarding scholarships and grants for excellence in journalism. The 2024-2025 program offers $700,000 across various competitions in writing, photojournalism, audio, television, and multimedia, allowing each university to submit two entries per competition. Open to undergraduate journalism majors and minors, this program aims to encourage student participation and recognizes outstanding journalistic work in diverse formats.

The Hearst Journalism Awards Program, established in 1960, offers scholarships for exceptional performance in journalism at the collegiate level, with a total of up to $700,000 in awards. This program includes various competitions across writing, photojournalism, audio, television, and multimedia formats. Open to undergraduate journalism majors and minors from accredited institutions, it encourages students to showcase their work and gain recognition in the field of journalism.

The Focus Agriculture Grant is a pioneering educational initiative by Agri-Culture aimed at community leaders. This nine-session program includes monthly seminars and farm tours, providing vital information on topics like production, government relations, and marketing. Participants from various sectors such as non-profits, education, and local business are encouraged to apply. The tuition is $1,500, with a $350 refund for 100% attendance. The Center for Scholarship Administration

The Center for Scholarship Administration (CSA) provides corporations, foundations, trust funds, and individual philanthropists scholarship selection and administration management that is experienced, professional, and cost efficient while lending the program an integrity not inherent in internal selection committees.

Wickam, Ivie Frances scholarship

The Ivie Frances Wickam Scholarship Trust is providing scholarships for deserving students. The Center for Scholarship Administration, Inc. (CSA), a non-profit, independent organization is the facilitator of the scholarship fund.

This scholarship is for one year only; however, current recipients may reapply and be considered for additional funding along with other new applicants. Scholarship recipients must be enrolled full-time. Scholarship recipients are limited to four total years of scholarship award and are expected to have been enrolled consecutive years during that time. Students must reapply for additional scholarship awards each year.
