Background & Purpose

The California Arts Council (CAC) is a statewide agency committed to serving California artists, arts organizations, and communities of all sizes and needs. Guided by racial equity principles, the CAC continuously evaluates its grantmaking practices to ensure fair and inclusive funding opportunities that sustain a vibrant, safe, and resilient creative ecosystem across the state.

Through regionally based Administering Organizations (AOs), the Individual Artists Fellowship (IAF) program uplifts and celebrates California artists across all disciplines and traditions, highlights their excellence and acknowledges their leadership in shaping traditional and contemporary cultures. The program includes three fellowship tiers with a different award amount:

CAC Emerging Artist Fellows – $5,000

Emerging artists are those in the beginning stages of making their work public and engaging the larger community in their practice.

CAC Established Artist Fellows – $10,000

Artists in the Established tier regularly make their work public and engage the larger community in their practice.

CAC Legacy Artist Fellows – $50,000

Artists in the Legacy tier can point to a significant body of work, produced over a substantial period of time, that has engaged their communities and that has made significant social impact.

The CAC approved eight regional AOs for the fellowship in September 2025. Each of the AOs has information and  details regarding their Individual Artists Fellowship programs, including application deadlines. If you are an individual artist, apply to the statewide fellowship program through the Regional AO listed below that serves your county. Please note: Individual artists must live in the region they are applying to and may submit an application to only one region.

In partnership with California Arts Council (CAC), Los Angeles Performance Practice (LAPP) is thrilled to serve as the Administering Organization for the Individual Artist Fellowships in Los Angeles County.

The Adams-Mastrovich Family Foundation Grant aims to support charitable organizations in Los Angeles County, California, and South Dakota. Focus areas include education, health, human services, the arts, and religious initiatives. Special priority is given to organizations aiding women, particularly victims of domestic violence. Eligibility requires 501(c)(3) status, while ineligible requests include political campaigns and fundraising events. The foundation emphasizes self-sufficiency and community support, aiming to uplift vulnerable populations through targeted funding.

The Levitt Music Series Grants - VIBE is a matching grant program designed to bring free outdoor concerts to urban neighborhoods with limited access to the arts. Targeting U.S. cities over 250,000 in population, this initiative fosters community connections and pride through diverse musical performances. Nonprofits can apply for up to $120,000 over three years, ensuring inclusive programming that engages people of all backgrounds and helps activate underused public spaces.

The Southern California Grant Program, managed by the W. M. Keck Foundation, supports diverse projects that enhance community well-being in areas such as Arts, Health, and Education. It emphasizes initiatives aiding low-income families and special needs populations in Los Angeles County. Grants are awarded twice a year, focusing on innovative solutions with measurable impact. Eligible organizations must demonstrate strong leadership and thorough planning, ensuring a significant long-term effect on the communities they serve.

The Music Man Foundation invites eligible organizations to apply for Advocacy and Research Grants aimed at supporting systemic change in the arts sector. Organizations must demonstrate their impact on music-related systems, showcase their priorities in the field, and outline their achievements. Grants will assist with research, advocacy training, and cross-sector initiatives to enhance community vitality and promote sustainable solutions, reflecting the Foundation's commitment to fostering positive arts engagement.

The Gupta Family Foundation Grant aims to empower disadvantaged individuals by providing financial support to organizations that foster self-reliance. Headquartered in Herndon, Virginia, the foundation offers grants ranging from $5,000 to over $250,000, prioritizing smaller organizations with a strong commitment to their missions. Eligibility typically includes US-based IRS 501(c)(3) entities, with operations extending to countries like India and Kenya. The foundation emphasizes mission alignment and effective resource allocation to ensure maximum impact.

The Henry Mayo Newhall Foundation, established in 1963, is dedicated to enhancing life quality in communities linked to California pioneer Henry Mayo Newhall. Grants typically range from $5,000 to $20,000 for one year, with potential renewals based on effectiveness. The Pasadena Art Alliance Grant supports contemporary visual arts in Southern California by funding innovative projects and educational programs. Established in 1955, this independent organization prioritizes grants for unconventional institutions and champions diverse artistic expressions. With over $8 million awarded since 1976, the PAA fosters community engagement and understanding of contemporary art. Preference is given to organizations located in the San Gabriel Valley, ensuring a focused impact on local art initiatives.

The LA County Arts & Culture Organizational Grant Program offers funding to nonprofit arts organizations in Los Angeles County. This two-year grant supports projects that enhance cultural services and provide accessible arts programming for diverse communities. Eligible organizations must demonstrate a commitment to arts through their budget and have a history of programming. The program aims to foster artistic initiatives that positively impact local residents, ensuring a vibrant cultural landscape in the region.

The Library Research Grants at Getty support researchers globally, providing vital access to the Getty Library's extensive collections. These short-term grants are ideal for those who need specific resources housed in the Getty Research Institute, with funding varying based on travel distance. Additionally, focused grants are available for specialized research in areas such as African American visual culture and culinary history. Applications are open to all researchers demonstrating a compelling need for these unique materials.

The LA84 Foundation Grant supports youth development through sports, prioritizing programs that engage underrepresented youth, including girls and young women. Notably, those receiving funding in the past three years are ineligible to apply.

The Read Conmigo School Impact Grants, offered by The Kemper Foundation, provide $10,000 grants annually to Title I elementary schools in select locations. Aimed at supporting dual-language initiatives, eligible schools must have an established Spanish-English program and be located in California, Florida, or Texas.
