Best Operating Grants for Nonprofits

To promote its mission of protecting Mississippi’s environment, the Mississippi Department of Environmental Quality (MDEQ) offers assistance grants for projects involving certain solid waste management and recycling activities and provides other assistance for abatement of certain solid waste problems. The Solid Waste Policy, Planning, & Grants Branch administers several solid waste assistance programs that provide grant funding to support a variety of solid waste management activities. These programs include the following:

• The local governments solid waste assistance grants program
• The local governments waste tire collection and clean up grants program
• The waste tire incentive recycling and research grants program
• The solid waste planning grants program

Each county in Mississippi may apply for a solid waste assistance grant amount allocated by Stateaid Road Mileage formula.

Iowa Department of Natural Resources

The Iowa Department of Natural Resources (DNR) manages fish and wildlife programs, ensures the health of Iowa’s forests and prairies, and provides recreational opportunities in Iowa’s state parks.

Just as importantly, the DNR carries out state and federal laws that protect air, land and water through technical assistance, permitting and compliance programs. The DNR also encourages the enjoyment and stewardship of natural resources among Iowans through outreach and education. Our mission is to conserve and enhance our natural resources in cooperation with individuals and organizations to improve the quality of life in Iowa and ensure a legacy for future generations.

IRA Iowa Tree Planting Grant

The Iowa Department of Natural Resources, through the USDA Forest Service & National Association of State Foresters 2023 Inflation Reduction Act (IRA), received funds to plant trees in public spaces.

The Iowa Tree Planting Grant provides reimbursable grants to purchase trees, mulch, tree staking/protection and supplemental watering by contractor or city staff. The grant is a two-year program.

The Iowa Tree Planting grants are available to community governmental entities, volunteer organizations, and service organizations involved with local urban and community forest services, to plant trees on publicly owned properties within the community to diversify the tree canopy, increase tree benefits, help with energy costs and health disparities, and increase access to parks and nature. 

The Greylock ABC Fund Grant supports educational initiatives for students of color and those from low socioeconomic backgrounds in grades pre-K-12. Established by the Berkshire Taconic Community Foundation, it aims to foster multicultural education and academic preparedness. Proposals from nonprofit organizations and public school districts in Northern Berkshire County and Pittsfield are encouraged, particularly those benefiting marginalized communities. Priority is given to projects that promote equity and have clear community impact.

The Lowcountry Land Conservation Grant, offered by the Gaylord & Dorothy Donnelley Foundation, focuses on enhancing land conservation efforts in the Lowcountry region through a climate resiliency, diversity, equity, and inclusion lens. This grant supports non-profit organizations in their general operations and projects aimed at protecting natural and working lands, fostering collaboration among diverse communities, and advocating for sustainable policies. Eligible applicants must be 501(c)(3) organizations with a connection to land conservation.

The Sapphire Awards, organized by the Florida Blue Foundation, celebrate exemplary programs, organizations, and individuals who have made significant contributions to community health since 2005. With awards totaling up to $525,000, this program recognizes transformative partnerships, innovative solutions, and measurable impacts on health outcomes. Nominees must be Florida-based and demonstrate a commitment to addressing health disparities and promoting overall well-being, aligning with the Foundation's priorities of improving health, food security, and mental health.

The Recycling Business Development Grants aim to reduce solid waste in North Carolina by encouraging sustainable recovery of materials. This program invites proposals from recycling businesses looking to enhance their operations or start new projects. Funding is primarily for investments in equipment and facilities that improve recycling capacity, helping to divert more materials from landfills into productive use. Eligible projects include collection, processing, and end use of materials in the waste stream.

The Redwood Connect Grants, offered by Save the Redwoods League, aim to enhance equitable access to redwood parks by fostering meaningful connections between communities and nature. Targeting youth aged pre-K to 21, these grants prioritize low-income and marginalized groups, providing enriching park experiences that promote curiosity and stewardship. With over 300 grants awarded since 2000, the League seeks partners to inspire the next generation through direct engagement with the wonders of redwood forests.

The Peter and Elizabeth C. Tower Foundation is dedicated to empowering children and young adults affected by substance use disorders, learning disabilities, mental illness, and intellectual disabilities. Their Programs & Services Grants support initiatives within Erie and Niagara Counties in New York and parts of Massachusetts, focusing on enhancing community capabilities and improving quality of life. Note that applications for certain grant cycles are paused for the remainder of 2025 as the foundation shifts towards emergency response funding.

The FL Nonpoint Source Management Grant offers funding to local governments and nonstate entities in Florida for projects aimed at reducing nonpoint source nutrient pollution in impaired waterbodies. This includes stormwater treatment initiatives and public education programs. Funded through Section 319(h) of the Clean Water Act, the program's goal is to mitigate pollution from land use activities, with approximately $8 million available annually for eligible projects.

The Forest Legacy Program (FLP) invites applications for FY2028 funding to safeguard privately owned forest lands through conservation easements or land purchases. This USDA Forest Service initiative collaborates with State agencies to protect vital forest ecosystems threatened by development. Participants can ensure the preservation of traditional forest uses and public benefits such as clean water, wildlife habitats, and recreational opportunities. The Delaware River Watershed Protection Fund: Catalyst Grants, initiated in 2014 by the Open Space Institute, aims to enhance water resource management and land protection. These grants support organizations addressing climate change, environmental justice, and community resilience. Eligible applicants include not-for-profit organizations and Indigenous-led groups. Funded projects should integrate science into conservation plans, focusing on water quality and stewardship. The initiative collaborates with the William Penn Foundation to ensure sustainable water practices across the Delaware River watershed.

The BCBSAZ Foundation for Community and Health Advancement supports charitable events that align with health improvement initiatives in Arizona. Eligible applicants include non-profit organizations and academic institutions. The foundation focuses on critical health issues such as mental health, chronic conditions, and health equity. Sponsorship applications must be submitted 60 days prior to the event date, with reviews conducted monthly. The foundation aims to enhance community health through strategic partnerships and impactful funding.

The Dr. Bruce D. J. Batt Fellowship in Waterfowl Conservation honors the legacy of Dr. Bruce Batt, a leading figure in waterfowl research. This fellowship offers up to $5,000 annually to graduate students at North American universities conducting vital research on waterfowl and wetlands. Renewable for up to two additional years for PhD students, the fellowship promotes the integration of sound science in conservation efforts, supporting the next generation of waterfowl professionals.

Community Grants

The McCullough-Hyde Foundation is excited to announce the launch of the Community Granting Program, as part of the expanded philanthropic mission of the Foundation. It is anticipated that more than $200,000 in funding will be available annually through this grant-making program.

The Community Granting Program is a philanthropic program that makes investments that address significant health needs of local communities. The Foundation will partner with and provide funding to local organizations that are leading the way to build healthier communities.

The McCullough-Hyde Foundation invites proposals from organizations for programs and projects that focus on education, prevention programs, awareness efforts, wellness opportunities and direct care in the following areas:

Programs and projects that prevent, manage, and reduce the burden of chronic conditions including, but not limited to, heart disease, hypertension, stroke, and diabetes. Eligible initiatives may focus on education, early detection, care coordination, wellness promotion, and access to treatment and support services.

Programs and projects that promote and sustain healthy lifestyle choices, including, but not limited to, physical activity, nutrition, tobacco cessation, and preventive care. Eligible initiatives should be community-centered and designed to empower individuals and families to take control of their health through activities, education, engagement, and improved access to wellness opportunities that support active living, particularly among youth and families.

Programs and projects that improve access to and quality of mental health and substance use services, reduce stigma, and promote emotional well-being across all age groups. Eligible initiatives may include, but are not limited to, prevention, early intervention, treatment, recovery support, education, and outreach related to conditions including, but not limited to, anxiety, depression, and addiction.

Programs and projects that address the underlying social and economic conditions influencing health outcomes, including, but not limited to, access to healthcare, food, housing, transportation, education and employment. Eligible initiatives should aim to reduce barriers to health and wellness by improving the environments where people live, work, and play.

The OR Salmon and Trout Enhancement Program Mini-Grants, managed by the Oregon Department of Fish & Wildlife, offer up to $2,000 for projects that promote community engagement and volunteerism in fish habitat restoration, education, monitoring, fish culture, and research. To apply, contact your local STEP biologist and STAC member for guidance. The program aims to support initiatives that align with the goals of the STEP program while ensuring compliance with federal assistance regulations.

Dover Grants, offered by Speedway Children's Charities, supports 501(c)(3) nonprofit organizations focused on children's welfare in Delaware and the mid-Atlantic region. The grants prioritize initiatives assisting homeless, foster children, and victims of trafficking. Applicants must complete a two-phase application process, beginning with a Pre-Proposal and followed by a Full Proposal if selected. The organization emphasizes funding for critical, medical, and educational needs to foster a brighter future for children.

The MT 319 Nonpoint Source Pollution Project Grants, administered by the Montana Department of Environmental Quality, aim to reduce nonpoint source pollution through competitive funding for eligible projects. This program supports various initiatives, including technical assistance and restoration efforts, to protect Montana's water quality. By implementing Best Management Practices and fostering community engagement, the program seeks to address diffuse pollution sources effectively. The 2012 Montana Nonpoint Source Management Plan outlines strategic goals to enhance these efforts.

The San Francisco Green Infrastructure Grant Program, managed by the SFPUC, aims to support property owners in creating green stormwater infrastructure. This initiative includes projects like permeable pavement and rain gardens, designed to reduce stormwater runoff from at least 0.5 acres of impervious surfaces. Grants can provide up to $2.5 million per project, enhancing public benefits while improving sewer system performance for SFPUC rate payers.

The OWEB Operating Capacity Grants support watershed councils and soil and water conservation districts in their operational costs. These biennial grants foster community engagement in voluntary watershed restoration efforts. By funding 45 districts, the program aids in conserving natural resources and enhances water quality through collaborative practices. The Council Capacity Grants specifically empower councils to restore native fish habitats and improve watershed functions, ensuring sustainable water management and healthier ecosystems.

Fairfield County’s Community Foundation

Fairfield County’s Community Foundation works closely with local organizations, nonprofits, businesses, government, and philanthropists to address challenges and identify opportunities to create a stronger, more vibrant region. Informed by three decades of partnering with and serving our community, we have awarded more than $420 million in grants to nonprofits in Fairfield County and beyond.

Fairfield County Food Security Grants

Fairfield County Food Security grants seek to fill unmet needs in underserved communities by strengthening the collaborative efforts of nonprofits and grassroots organizations that are responding to increased demands and community needs. The Community Foundation will award organizations that best demonstrate the potential to make meaningful, measurable changes in our community by centering equity and transforming the systems and structures at the root of inequities. Applications are accepted on a rolling basis, until available funded are expended.

Specifically, the Fairfield County Food Security grants seek to fill unmet needs in underserved communities by strengthening the collaborative efforts of nonprofits responding to the increased demands and community needs, including:  

• Neighborhood food banks and hyperlocal pantry programs (e.g., mutual aid, churches). 
• Grassroots food distribution networks that deliver directly to families and seniors. 
• School and after-school nutrition programs that fill gaps for children and teens. 
• Food pantries at community colleges meet students’ basic needs.
• Services for people reentering the community from incarceration and veterans’ groups expanding food access.
• Local farms and community growers that help supply healthy, culturally relevant foods for underserved communities.
• Advocating for policies related to food access and gaps in food security.

The Oregon State Weed Board Grant Program, administered by the Oregon Department of Agriculture and OWEB, focuses on controlling noxious weeds to protect water quality and restore watershed health. Eligible applicants include tribes, colleges, and conservation districts, with an emphasis on integrated weed management strategies. Projects must prioritize on-the-ground control efforts and demonstrate clear site management objectives. This funding opportunity aims to enhance fish and wildlife habitats and support native salmonid populations.

Nassau County has launched the Septic Environmental Program to Improve Cleanliness (SEPTIC) Grant, aimed at replacing outdated septic systems with innovative nitrogen-reducing technologies. Grants of up to $20,000 are available for eligible homeowners and small businesses, addressing nitrogen pollution—an urgent concern for Long Island's water quality. This initiative supports public health and environmental sustainability, significantly reducing nitrogen discharge while ensuring effective wastewater treatment.

The Paul L. Busch Award, provided by the Water Research Foundation, honors individuals for innovative research in water quality. This prestigious award supports promising researchers with a $100,000 grant to advance their work. The selection process is inclusive, with no restrictions based on race, gender, or nationality, and encourages applications from diverse candidates. Recipients are expected to collaborate with U.S.-based organizations, fostering practical applications of their research in the water environment.

The Ontario Wildlife Foundation Grant supports initiatives aimed at conserving and enhancing Ontario's natural resources. It focuses on projects that promote conservation education, outdoor recreation, and scientific research related to wildlife and their habitats. Eligible projects must benefit local communities, while ineligible projects include those that primarily benefit private properties or involve travel expenses for conferences. This grant encourages collaborative efforts to ensure sustainable environmental practices.

The Ohio Department of Health’s mission is advancing the health and well-being of all Ohioans by transforming the state’s public health system through unique partnerships and funding streams; addressing the community conditions and inequities that lead to disparities in health outcomes; and implementing data-driven, evidence-based solutions.

Trauma-Informed Approaches in Health and Public Health- Summer Funding Opportunity

The Ohio Department of Health Bureau of Health Improvement and Wellness is investing in trauma-informed approaches for health and public health agencies across Ohio. Funding will support qualified contractors to provide coaching, training, facilitation, and organizational planning to help agencies implement trauma-informed practices. This initiative is intended to improve staff wellness and retention, strengthen resiliency-informed organizational culture, and enhance support for patients and clients impacted by trauma and adverse childhood experiences (ACEs).

May Family Foundation Mental Health & Counseling Grant

Our foundation strives to be engaged in our local communities beyond grant funding. We support select programs that align with our goals and form a connection through potential volunteering opportunities, site visits, and recognition of successes.

We welcome grant applications for financial support in mental health and counseling:

• Programs and services that improve life for those with physical and mental challenges.
• We support programs that help students deal with a mental health diagnosis and life stressors, to help navigate the changes that occur during early childhood development through college.

The NY Source Water Buffer Program, administered by the New York State Soil and Water Conservation Committee, aims to protect public drinking water and enhance water quality. With approximately $5 million available through the Clean Water Infrastructure Act of 2017, the program funds conservation easements and projects that establish riparian buffers on farmland. These vital buffers improve water quality by filtering runoff, ensuring safe drinking water for future generations.
